JUST BRILLIANT GUIDES

welcome to

karratha Karratha is located in the Pilbara region, which boasts one of the biggest collections of rock art in the world and is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes. ‘Karratha’ is an Aboriginal word that translates to ‘good country’.

With a focus on preserving its important Indigenous links, over 20 Aboriginal languages with variations are still spoken in the region today, and some local artists are known globally for their works. Enquire at the Karratha Visitor Centre for recent books that survey the region’s fascinating Indigenous heritage. The region was discovered by Europeans in the early 1600s when Captain De Witt’s vessel was grounded near Port Hedland. At the end of the century, the English explorer, William Dampier, ventured into a stunning region comprising of 42 islands which was later named the Dampier Archipelago. With an array of marine life and

island fauna, the area is an aquatic playground for snorkelling, boating, fishing and exploring. Settled in the 1800s, European pioneers sustained their existence with pastoral farming, which was adversely affected by the Depression and World War I. For the last 45 years, the region has emerged as a mining stalwart producing copious amounts of copper, iron ore, salt and gas. Karratha was established in 1968 to support the mining operations. Today, Karratha is a thriving commercial hub that services the surrounding district as well as contract workers known as FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) workers. The township offers many shopping, dining and entertainment options. The annual FeNaCING Festival (deriving its name from the chemical symbols of the three predominant exports in the region) occurs the first weekend in August and celebrates with community stalls, activities and entertainment.

The Pilbara region recognises its Aboriginal history by acknowledging the traditional landowners, the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi people. Its rich Indigenous heritage has led to the presence of over 50,000 rock carvings (petroglyphs) in the region, a fascinating cultural highlight for visitors to Karratha and surrounds.
