Getting around town

In Melbourne, cars share roads with trams and the people getting on and off them, so there are a number of unique road rules in place to make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely. For more information about Victorian road rules call 13 11 71 or go to vicroads.vic.gov.au.

And once you know a few simple rules, you will be travelling around like a Melburnian. The hook turn is one such rule.
At selected intersections in the CBD, there are clearly marked signs that
read ‘Right turn from left only’. This means that a driver who wants to turn right at that intersection must move into the far left-hand lane to do so.
The driver must remain there until all overtaking and oncoming traffic lights turn red. Once all the traffic has cleared, the driver can safely make a wide turn to the right. The hook turn is designed to keep tram tracks free and to ensure trams have priority when travelling through these intersections. It is important to be aware of the trams around you at all times. Trams frequently stop to pick up passengers and tram stops are sometimes obscured from a driver’s view. For this reason, when a tram slows down in front of you, it rings its bells and flashes its lights, this is an indication that the doors will open and passengers will embark and disembark by stepping out across the left lane of traffic. When the tram becomes 12 10

stationary, both lanes of traffic must stop level with the rear of the tram. Once everyone has moved off the road and the doors are closed, you may overtake the tram at a speed no greater than 10 km/hr. Melbourne Bike Share Bike Share is a new form of public transport designed for short trips across the city. With 50 bike stations located around the CBD and city fringe, the adventures and places you can explore by bike are endless. To use Bike Share, simply go to a kiosk at any bike station, use the touch screen and follow the instructions.
You can select a daily ($2.70) or weekly ($8.00) hire and can also purchase a helmet for just $5 at participating 7-Eleven, IGA and IGA Xpress stores, or from vending machines at Southern Cross Station and Melbourne University. For more information or to download bike maps, visit – www.melbournebikeshare.com.au or phone 1300 711 590.

The CityLink expressway links the West Gate, Monash and Tullamarine freeways allowing a fast and free-flowing journey to destinations such as the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island, Gippsland, the Goldfields and Melbourne Airport. A blue and yellow sign will advise you when you are about to enter a CityLink zone. Toll collection is done electronically and then charged to an account set up by the driver or paid for by a Pass they have purchased before travelling. It is important to organise payment for your toll before you use the CityLink expressway. This can be done over the counter at selected newsagents, online at citylink.com.au, over the counter at any Victorian Post Office, by calling 13 26 29 (24 hours a day,
7 days a week), or by visiting the CityLink Customer Centre located at
67 Lorimer Street, Southbank (Melway: 2E G10). Alternatively if you have an up to date tolling account with a transponder/ eTAG you can travel on CityLink and the journey will be billed to your account at no extra charge. The cost of the toll will vary according to the section of the road used and the type of vehicle you are

12

driving. CityLink has a range of passes and accounts to cater for both casual and regular users. If you rarely use the expressway, a CityLink pass would suit you. You can choose from a 24 Hour Pass which gives you unlimited access for the 24 hours following your first trip, a Weekend Pass which gives you unlimited access from midday Friday to midnight Sunday or a Tulla Pass for unlimited travel between Bulla and Flemington Roads for a 24 hour period following your first trip. You must let CityLink know when you intend to travel. If you find yourself on the expressway unprepared, you have three days in which to call 13 26 29 and back purchase a Pass.

EastLink is the 39km tollway in Melbourne’s east. EastLink travels from Mitcham to Frankston, and seamlessly connects the Eastern, Monash, Frankston and Peninsula Link Freeways. EastLink is part of the quickest and easiest route from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula tourist region. All vehicles are tolled on EastLink including motorcycles. There are no cash booths on EastLink, so you will need a tag, account or trip pass to pay the toll. If you already have a tag, for example, from one of the tollways in Sydney or Brisbane, it will work on EastLink and

EastLink tolls will be charged to your existing tag account. To buy a trip pass, phone 13 LINK (13 54 65) or visit EastLink.com.au. You will need to have your credit card and vehicle licence plate details handy. Each trip pass is valid for a single trip on EastLink in one direction only, so you’ll need two trip passes for a return trip. You must remember to buy your trip pass before, or up to three days after your trip on EastLink. Renting a vehicle? Visit EastLink.com.au/rental for more information about paying tolls.

If you need to travel on both CityLink and EastLink then a Melbourne Pass is probably the most appropriate product. You have the freedom to travel on both roads for the period you nominate. There is a small account opening fee ($5.50) and your credit card is charged only for the tolls incurred across this period and a video matching fee for each trip. Please call 13 26 29 or visit citylink.com.au to find out more.

European-inspired eateries and surrounds harks the laneways of Paris, so you’ll feel very cosy and chic. Hardware Lane is a bustling lunchtime laneway inviting the al fresco lifestyle with a plethora of outside cafés. 28

At night it plays host to a number of funky bars so you can switch vibes and enjoy some bar food and cocktails. Located opposite Flinders Street train station, Federation Square is Melbourne’s public hub with plenty of places to grab
a snack, meal or drink and regular live entertainment. Southside, opposite Flinders Street Station and hugging the banks of the Yarra River, the Southgate shopping precinct offers everything from fine dining to casual eating - often with spectacular views of Melbourne’s skyline. Located next to the Arts Centre Melbourne, Southgate is the perfect place to dine before catching a show or the opera. From fine dining at award-winning restaurants to sipping a cocktail at a bar to a relaxed lunch with friends at a café, NewQuay Docklands delivers some of Melbourne’s most sought after venues. To get to The Docklands you can catch the free City Circle Tram that loops around the CBD; alternatively take tram 70 from Flinders Street or the 86 from Bourke Street.
