PORTLAND

JUST BRILLIANT GUIDES

WELCOME to Portland

Portland, the birthplace of Victoria, is a thriving, vibrant harbour-side city with over 10,000 residents. It is one of the premier destinations for whale, seal and gannet sight-seeing. With dramatic coastline and volcanic cliffs, isolated beaches, majestic forests, historic buildings and an industrial port blending seamlessly into the town landscape, the area is unsurpassed in options for either leisure or outdoor pursuits. Portland is a hidden jewel ready to entertain and welcome you. It is the perfect location to base yourself and explore the region which includes the nearby townships of Casterton, Heywood, Dartmoor and Nelson.

TRADITIONAL LANDS OF THE GUNDITJMARA Portland and surrounding areas are steeped in indigenous history. The cultural landscape within the region is recognised as the Budj Bim National Heritage Landscape, one of the oldest examples of permanent

indigenous settlement. Visitors are able to be guided throughout the region to view the remains of stone houses, eel traps and the aqua-culture system created by the lava flow from nearby Mount Eccles.

EUROPEAN INFLUENCE Lieutenant James Grant chartered the south western coastline of Victoria in 1800. Sighting the area from aboard the ‘Lady Nelson’, he named Portland Bay after the English Secretary of State, the Duke of Portland. European settlement history for the Colony of Victoria began on the shores of Portland Bay with the arrival of Edward Henty in the Ladybird in November 1834 from Tasmania. The first piece of soil turned by a European settler took place in December 1834 at the Ploughed Field (opposite the Portland Hospital).

NATURAL Attractions

The Portland area encompasses the spectacular scenery of three bays – Portland Bay, Bridgewater Bay and Discovery Bay.

Fawthrop Lagoon – a permanent wetland area set in natural bushland and home to abundant birdlife. The Southern Ocean waters are a year round whalewatching destination, with southern right whales visible from May to October and blue whales spotted from November to May. There are many vantage points to watch whales frolicking from land.

Explore Cape Nelson State Park, a picturesque park set on 210 hectares with craggy coastal cliffs. Attractions include the 3km loop Sea Cliff Nature Walk, Yellow Rock, the Enchanted Forest walk and Cape Nelson Lighthouse, a 32m lighthouse built in 1884 of local stone.

A variety of walks are on offer in the region, catering to all levels and interests. Step back into the past and use the historical walking guide available from the visitor information centre to explore the township boasting the largest bluestone precinct in Victoria. For the more experienced hiker, try your hand at the premier walking track, the Great South West Walk. This 250km trail located between Portland and Nelson is a world class experience including rugged cliffs, sublime bays, tranquil forests and a pristine river, all within four national parks. The walk also incorporates short loops and full day hiking options. For more information, visit www.greatsouthwestwalk.com.

If you enjoy observing wildlife you can view Australia’s first mainland gannet bird colony and nesting site at Point Danger. Alternatively, take a boat ride to see the Australian and New Zealand fur seals at Cape Bridgewater or complete a 2.5km loop walk around

Year-round fishing, surfing, diving, horse riding and mountain bike riding await the adventure enthusiast. Bring your own equipment or one of the many charter and tour operators will be able to assist you in enjoying your holiday.

Drive to Cape Bridgewater to access sandy beaches, rugged windswept cliff-tops, lakes, a sculptured coastline, limestone formations, caves, blowholes and views across Discovery Bay of the mountainous sand dunes.
