In the summer time, the region comes alive with a splendid array of wild flowers, predominantly during January and February. In the winter time, the Alpine peaks are flush with snow, which affords enthusiasts the opportunity to ski, snowboard and toboggan.

A number of quaint townships thread throughout the region and offer their own unique attractions. The Snowy Mountains Muster, a three day annual event occurring in late December, celebrates this wonderful region with bush poetry, art and horse events.

Cooma

COOMA, THE LARGEST TOWNSHIP IN THE SNOWY MOUNTAINS REGION, IS THE GATEWAY TO THE PICTURESQUE ALPINE DISTRICT.

When one of the greatest civil engineering wonders in the world, the Snowy Mountains Scheme, set up its main office in Cooma in the 1940s, Cooma changed forever. People from all around the world moved into the town at that time. Some moved on, some stayed, and today Cooma has a diverse population of around 9,000. Cooma boasts four distinct seasons. With cold winters and mild summers, the town is suited for year round activities. Winter brings a rush of visitors to enjoy the snowfields, while the rest of the year Cooma attracts anybody from extreme sport fanatics to wandering holiday-makers and people tracing their family trees. The local landscape varies widely – from rugged rainforests and waterfalls in the east, to the ancient mountains and snow gums in the west, and in the middle, the Monaro Plains. Today visitors can drop into the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre in Cooma to marvel at the engineering feats of the Snowy Scheme.

Jindabyne EXPERIENCE THE ALPINE VILLAGE CHARM OF JINDABYNE, A GREAT BASE FOR EXPLORING THE KOSCIUSZKO NATIONAL PARK OR VISITING THE SNOWFIELDS IN WINTER. Nestled at the edge of Lake Jindabyne, this picturesque township is home to the visitor information centre for the Kosciuszko National Park, the largest national park in NSW. Jindabyne was re-located to its present location in the 1960s as a result of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which dammed the Snowy River. In Summer, visitors can enjoy some of the best views of the region from the top of Mount Kosciuszko, accessible via Charlotte Pass and the Kosciuszko Express chairlift at Thredbo. Take in the flourishing wildflowers that ignite the area with colour in January and February. In Winter, the region’s resorts are abuzz with snow sports fanatics. Year round activities on offer include mountain biking, kayaking, bushwalking and fishing. In late December each year, Jindabyne and surrounds play host to the Snowy Mountains Muster, which captures the history, heritage and culture of the Snowy Mountains with a few modern twists.
