Your guide to MOOLOOLaBA, ALEXANDRA HEADLAND MAROOCHYDORE & cotton tree
JUST BRILLIANT GUIDES
welcome to
the sunshine coast The Sunshine Coast is an iconic and much loved region in Queensland. Australians and international guests alike flock to the area all year round to enjoy the sun and the surf. Located 100 kilometres north of Brisbane, it spans a stunning coastline and fertile hinterland with charming townships dotted along the way. The region that encompasses Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore and Cotton Tree is just another slice of subtropical paradise. While Maroochydore is the commercial hub of the region, each area boasts its own unique attractions combined with a laid-back, outdoor lifestyle. Make sure you spend a day at the highly recommended Mooloolaba Beach for a day in the sun and the surf. Meanwhile you can watch the waves and surfers roll in at the charming village of Alexandra Headland. In Maroochydore, you’ve got the best of both worlds: beach-filled days and entertainment by night. At Cotton Tree, more aquatic adventures await you, including a quaint artisan market occurring every Sunday.

While the water is a huge drawcard for visitors to the Sunshine Coast, the region is not just the sum of its stunning coastline. Just a half hour drive from Mooloolaba lie the Glass House Mountains. These fascinating rocky formations were created from volcanic eruptions that occurred in the region between
25-27 million years ago. You can explore the Glass House Mountains with a scenic drive through the national park or on foot along one of the trails. If you want to get the adrenaline pumping, rock climbing and abseiling tours are available in the region. Australia Zoo, made famous by Steve Irwin, is located in nearby Beerwah. The zoo showcases over one hundred different species of animals and prides itself on animal conservation. The zoo is open daily from 9am to 5pm and offers a range of shows to entertain the whole family. Find out more at australiazoo.com.au. Whale watching is extremely popular between midJune to November, when the Sunshine Coast is privy to humpback whales migrating up and down the coast. The humpback whale is distinguished by its colouring of black or grey with a white underbelly. This species is renowned for frolicking, which makes for stunning displays of water acrobatics. Make sure you book a whale watching tour if you’re here during the season. Enjoy your time on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

The glistening white sands and turquoise waters of Mooloolaba Beach beckon visitors and locals alike. Recently voted one of TripAdvisor’s Top Ten Australian Beaches, this family-friendly beach is just the place to while away a perfect day. When you’ve had enough sun, the Esplanade which overlooks the ocean offers alfresco dining as well as boutique shopping. Take a look around or just park yourself at one of the eateries to indulge in some of Mooloolaba’s fresh local seafood. With 16 themed zones, the kids will be wowed by the variety and range of marine life on display. If you’re drawn to exploring marine life in its natural habitat, Mooloolaba offers up
some great diving. At Coral Gardens, situated on Inner Gneerings, both soft and hard corals can be found with stingrays, eagle rays, batfish and trevally regularly spotted in the area. For more experienced divers, Magic Mountain located at Outer Gneerings Reef enables one to explore ravines, bommies and gullies jampacked with amazing marine life. The ex-HMAS Brisbane, a naval vessel that was scuttled in 2005, offers great wreck diving. Survey the ship’s compartments while clown and lion fish skim casually by. Between July and November, the Sunshine Coast becomes a hotspot for whale watching. Marvel at these majestic creatures frollicking in warmer waters. For more information on whale watching tours, contact Sunreef Mooloolaba on 5444 5656. Located fifteen minutes’ drive from Mooloolaba and nestled within a subtropical paradise, Buderim Falls is well worth checking out. The waterfall is beautiful and the reserve is a Mecca for colourful birdlife. Stop in at Buderim township on the way to the falls to stock up on picnic treats. Your holiday wouldn’t be complete without a rejuvenating body treatment at one of the day spas in Mooloolaba. Alternatively, for a unique therapeutic experience, be sure to try the Salt Caves.

Maroochydore Maroochydore might be the commercial hub of the Sunshine Coast, but it still provides plenty of opportunity to relax and unwind. In fact, the city’s blend of natural attractions and thriving night life means visitors can have the best of both worlds. There’s no place along the Sunshine Coast coastline that doesn’t provide seemingly endless sunshine and surf, and Maroochydore is no different. With wide stretches of sparkling white sand and alluring waters, you could spend your entire day at the main beach. Patrolled by the local surf club, water sports are hugely popular here, with everything from surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing and swimming available. Take a stroll along the panoramic coastal walk down to Alexandra Headland. Maroochydore is also fortunate to have the Maroochy River, a picturesque waterway with a thriving ecosystem. Whether you swim, fish, kayak, paddle board, spot birdlife or take a sunset tour along the river, this natural attraction will surely delight. Hire bikes for the family and take a ride along the various bike trails in the region. The Maroochy River Golf Club, boasting lovely views of Mount Coolum and an 18-hole par 72 golf course, is perfect for golfing enthusiasts. Relax and enjoy a meal from the bistro and bar afterwards to reflect on your game. If you’re up for some retail therapy, the Sunshine Plaza showcases more than 220 specialty stores. If you’re in need of refreshments, there are plenty of eateries located along the boardwalk overlooking the water. For boutique shopping, try Duporth Avenue and Cotton Tree.

cotton tree Image by Tourism & Events Queensland
Bordered either side by the ocean and Maroochy River, Cotton Tree is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. This suburb of Maroochydore derives its name from the native cotton trees that line its shores. Water is a predominant theme here, which is not so surprising given that both the ocean and river are available at your fingertips.
alexandra headland Alexandra Headland, affectionately known as ‘Alex’ to the locals, has retained a laid-back village feel despite being located along the ever popular Sunshine Coast. Its beautiful rolling surf and fertile parklands inspire nothing short of total relaxation. Situated between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland is the ideal place to escape the harried pace of modern life. Pack a picnic and a book, and head down to the water to soak up the day. The main beach is patrolled by the Alexandra Surf Life Saving Club, which makes it a safe location for families with young children. The headland is renowned for great surf breaks, so you can watch surfers bobbing up and down waiting for the perfect wave. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a surf lesson and learn how to navigate the rolling surf yourself. The recently upgraded Alex Skate Park is where kids and teenagers congregate to practice their aerodynamic feats. If you want some reprieve from the sun, take a stroll to Alexandra Parade and grab a bite at one of the delicious eateries. Serving up a blend of cuisines – Indian, Thai and modern Australian – and succulent fresh seafood, you can relax and take in the holiday vibe. Be sure to drop into the gorgeous Milk and Beans Coffee House for café fare and a great brew.
Water sports beckon all and sundry with family-friendly beaches, fishing, river cruises and boat charters. Located across from the Maroochy River, the Cotton Tree Aquatic Centre has a water park for the kids to splash around in. Fishing enthusiasts can skip over to Pincushion Island by boat for a casual fishing adventure. For a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner, head to the riverfront restaurant precinct. The Coffee Club boasts a range of fresh dishes as well as great coffee. Grab some fish and chips to eat in the park while you soak up the laid-back vibe. The main strip also offers an array of boutique stores if you're up for a spot of shopping.
