SUNSHINE COAST Your guide to Caloundra, Kings Beach, Moffat Beach and Dicky Beach
JUST BRILLIANT GUIDES
WELCOME to
The Sunshine Coast The Sunshine Coast is an iconic and much loved region in Queensland. Australians and international guests flock to the area all year round to enjoy the sun and the surf. Located 100 kilometres north of Brisbane, it spans a stunning coastline and fertile hinterland with charming townships dotted along the way. The Caloundra region, located at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, is the perfect destination to kick off a sun-drenched holiday. Nestled alongside the Pacific Ocean, there’s a wide range of water sports on offer, including snorkelling, jet skiing, surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding, with a number of sandy beaches to swim and frolic in. Meander along the Caloundra Coastal Walk to absorb the picturesque and rejuvenating nature of Caloundra. For fishing enthusiasts, there’s plenty of opportunity to throw in a line along the coastline or in the estuary. While the water is a huge drawcard for visitors to Caloundra, the region is not just the sum of its stunning coastline. Visitors can take in a round of golf at the Caloundra Golf Club or the Greg Norman-designed Pelican Waters Golf Club, spend time indulging their inner art critic at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery, or check out the fascinating aviation history at the Queensland Air Museum. Alternatively, families can enjoy a picnic at the Happy Valley playground where the kids can entertain themselves on the pirate ship.
Just a half hour drive from Caloundra lie the Glass House Mountains. These fascinating rocky formations were created from volcanic eruptions that occurred in the region between 25-27 million years ago. You can explore the Glass House Mountains with a scenic drive through the national park or on foot along one of the trails. If you want to get the adrenaline pumping, rock climbing and abseiling tours are available in the region. Australia Zoo, made famous by Steve Irwin, is located in nearby Beerwah. The zoo showcases over one hundred different species of animals and prides itself for its animal conservation. The zoo is open daily from 9am to 5pm and offers a range of shows to entertain the whole family. Find out more at australiazoo.com.au. The Caloundra region also has a number of exciting events occurring annually, which includes the Caloundra Music Festival and Caloundra Film Festival. Enjoy your time on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.

CALOUNDRA For visitors to the region, Caloundra is an aquatic oasis boasting a laid-back lifestyle and plenty to see and do. The origin of the township’s name is believed to derive from the Aboriginal language. Some contention still exists about whether it was named after ‘Callanda’ which means beautiful or ‘Cullowundoor’ which describes the beech trees in the region. Both definitions might well be apt. Caloundra is abundant in entertaining water sports, so visitors to the region are spoilt for choice. Kings Beach, Dicky Beach, Moffat Beach, Golden Beach, Bulcock Beach and Shelly Beach all offer plenty of opportunity to have fun in the surf. Kings Beach, which is patrolled daily, is a popular beach destination for families as it also features a salt water pool and fountain for children to play in. While the Caloundra Coastal Walk spans 25 kilometres, it can be digested in smaller sections. The track takes in iconic landmarks such as the World War II Military Jetty
and Heritage Listed Kings Beach Baths Pavilion along the way. At Pumicestone Passage, you can spot dolphins and dugongs frolicking in the water. Try the Caloundra Estuary, Bulcock Beach and the passage for fishing. A short drive west to Landsborough, the Big Kart Track is not just for the big kids at heart. Boasting the largest track in Australia, the facility has a track for teenagers and adults as well as one for children. Big Kart Track is open daily except for Christmas Day. For more information, please visit bigkart.com.au. Caloundra offers a number of eateries that capitalise on the township’s outdoor lifestyle. For fresh seafood, the Seafood Market @ Caloundra on Bulcock Street is open daily. The Caloundra Street Fair which occurs every Sunday from 8am-1pm will give you ample opportunity to taste the local produce and purchase a souvenir for home.

KINGS BEACH Located within 2 kilometres of the Caloundra CBD, Kings Beach is home to one of the region’s most popular beaches and offers an array of outdoor activities. In 2015, Kings Beach was awarded the state title of ‘Top Beach’ by Surf Life Saving Queensland and it’s easy to see why. Showcasing golden sands and turquoise waters, this beach is patrolled daily so it’s a childfriendly, relaxing location to park the family for the day. Pack your swimming gear and enjoy a picnic lunch by the seaside. Later take a stroll and explore the beach’s sparkling rock pools. For those seeking something more adventurous, grab a surfboard or paddle board and take to the surf.
Visitors to Kings Beach also have the option of an oceanfront salt water pool which provides the same lovely panorama as the beach. The pool is free to use and boasts both a kids and wading pool with shade sails if you want to escape the sun. Barbecue facilities and parking are available here. Nearby, the Kings Beach fountain is an entertaining attraction for the kids with its time-delayed water projections. Kings Beach has a range of dining options, so sit back and relax while the locals offer up a tantalising meal.

MOFFAT BEACH Located at the northern end of the headland, Moffat Beach is a popular surf destination that pays homage to its steadfast surfing heritage even today. Moffat Beach is a renowned surfing location in Caloundra where locals and visitors alike can enjoy its consistent reef breaks. Every Easter long weekend, the beach comes alive with the Ma and Pa Bendall Classic, which has been running for over 40 years. In the 1950s, Marjory and Ben Bendall settled in the region among a tiny community of avid surfers. Founding the Moffateers club in 1966, which supported young surfers and upheld the integrity of the sport, the Bendalls forged a reputation as the grandmother (Ma) and grandfather (Pa) of surfing on the Sunshine Coast. After Ben Bendall’s death in 1973, a memorial plaque
was erected at the headland. In 1974, the Ma and Pa Bendall Classic was born. Moffat Beach also provides plenty of opportunity to kitesurf, jet ski, even skydive. While the beach is unpatrolled and not suitable for swimming, it’s still a beautiful location to watch the surf or read a book from one of the tables located under the lovely pines. From here, you can embark on a scenic coastal walk from Moffat Beach to Kings Beach. For refreshments, check out the Moffat Beach Brewing Co., which also has a micro-brewery onsite if you’re keen on craft beers.
DICKY BEACH Nicknamed after the SS Dicky that shipwrecked on the beach in the late 1800s, Dicky Beach features a picturesque foreshore which is perfect for swimming and surfing. During a cyclone in 1893, the SS Dicky ran aground on the foreshore here. With the force of nature, over the next century the steamship was reduced to scant, rusted remains and, for safety reasons, was relocated in 2015. Patrolled seven days a week, Dicky Beach is the quintessential location to frolic in the water or challenge the surf. The nearby skate park and playground provide the kids with more fun entertainment options. Take a stroll across to Moffat Beach to stretch your legs, and it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to the shops and cafÊs for refreshments. A short 25 minute drive to Mooloolaba, the whole family can marvel at over 25,000 marine creatures at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast. With 16 themed zones, the kids will be wowed by the variety and range of marine life on display.
Be Sun
SMART When planning a day outside, Cancer Council Australia recommends you take five steps to protect against sun damage: • Extra care should be taken between 10am and 3pm when UV levels reach their peak. • SLIP on some sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
pic
• SLOP on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF+30 sunscreen - put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun. • SLAP on a hat, broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears. • SEEK shade. • SLIDE on sunglasses. Make sure they meet Australian Standards. For smartphone users, a free SunSmart app is a great way to check the UV Alert when you are out and about. iPhone users can download it at the iTunes App Store, and Android users at Google.

Away from the popular seaside, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland offers its own unique attractions. Embark on a self-drive tour to explore the region’s lush national parks and iconic landmarks. The Glass House Mountains comprise of a number of volcanic peaks that offer an awe-inspiring backdrop to this rich landscape. Stop at any of the scenic outlooks marked throughout the region. Discover the beguiling villages dotted throughout the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. The creative township of
Maleny boasts organic cafes, bookstores, a historic hotel and art galleries, while Montville offers stunning views of the coast and stylish outlets.
