Masterplan of Heden Bachelor thesis part 1 February - May 2015 Blender, Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign With: David Scavo, Simon Hassleblom, Guilliermo Garcia

Heden in Gothenburg is today a public space filled with activity and youths playing football. It is also a big connection right in the middle of Gothenburg with thousands of people using the space as communication on a daily basis. In this project, our team developed the concept of dramatically increasing the exploitation of a city to make room for large public spaces without a loss in the ammount of homes.

1. Site volume

2. Making room for public space

3. New, optimised paths

4. Adjusting heights to surrounding

5. Specifying the spaces

6. Adding gardens on buildings

Process of the Masterplan

The main idea of the project was to make a city that is dense in terms of residents and visitors at the same time as it feel very open with big parks, lower buildings and big paths.

The Paths and city grid

Since the site is heavily used by pedestrians we wanter to streamline the paths. We used 100 year old movements from when the site was just an open space and mixed it with the modern points of interest.

Program of the built environment

One importand aspect of the project was to have activity during all hours of the day which was partly solved by the programmes great variety.

Contrast in spaces

The end result is a city block that intrigues people with it’s variations of highrise and lowrise, dense and open as well as the different contents of the buildings.

Ecocentra of Gothenburg Bachelor thesis part 2 May - June 2015 Blender, Rhino, Grasshopper, Photoshop, InDesign

One thing that is missing from larger cities today is wild nature that is close by and accessable. The Ecocentra of Gothenburg is a manifestation of that not everything in a city needs to be planned and strict. In this project I explored the concept of a truly wild park working together with a built environment. The Ecocentra is a place where companies and students can come and learn about how to protect the nature. Though, in todays cities we are distanced from the wild and we do not have a relationship with what we are trying to protect. By simply placing a forest on top of the Ecocentra, the relationship becomes apparent.

Process of development

In the masterplan of the area it is stated that the site should be used as a park. By placing the built environment underground we achieved a much more varied landscape and a better overall value from the site.

Buildings and nature side by side

The nature adapts to the underground buildings since the roots of large trees need much space for their roots. At the same time, the earth covering the buildings works as insulation for the Ecocentra.

Varied nature and spaces

The outer parts of the forest consists of fast growing leaf trees to quickly establish the forest on the site. Deeper inside, the wilder fir-trees and pines get long time to grow, providing the sence of wilderness.

Open but hidden buildings

The Ecocentera is visually hidden from the nature above but is naturally lit using hidden windows. One example is the window beneath the small pond, it lets light trough at the same time as it is beatiful and educational.

Hotel “Ridå” Building as a system studio November 2014 - January 2015 Rhino, Grasshopper, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Illustrator

This studio was primarily focused on making a structurally correct building with the challenge of having large, open public spaces in the lower floors while having smaller, hotel rooms on the upper floors. The resulting design was a building that showed of it’s structural elements with an external skeleton and using it as it’s primary visual design element.

Complex exterior and simple interior

While the facade of the building is very elaborate, the interior is very simplified with consistent rooms in the hotel section and large open spaces with sufficient daylight in the conference and restaurant.

The exterior structure carries a large framework on the top of the building wchich in turn is used to pull up the central “spine. The exterior pillars are clad with wood that varies in size to create the organic expression.

Lyceum Student competition - Honorable mention award july - August 2014 Blender, Photoshop, InDesign, AutoCAD, Sketchup Concieved in collaboration with Simon Hassleblom

Lyceum means “a place for learning. An old school is to be renovated and shaped into public space and student dormitories. The concept is a building filled with interesting meatings, a friction between people that ignites a flame of learning, resulting in a thick smoke of knowledge.

Ceramics as art and room defining

The ceramics of the project is an essential component as it helps defining the different spaces of the public space. The shapes are organic and transitions into each other as to demonstrate the ambiguity of the spaces.

The Arcade Student competition - Honorable mention award October - December 2014 Blender, Photoshop, InDesign

Glass is a material that has been used for centuries. In recent days we have refined the material enough to be able to have it as a structural material. In this project we wanted to connect old and new structural technology by having several arches of glass forming an Arcade the space for a cafĂŠ.

Glass and steel

The shape stabalizes itself through the angles of the Arcs aswell as the glass sheets that forms the roof of the central part. This allows for very slim, black steel components to connect the shapes..

Easy manufacturing

The glass Arcs are made by watercutting glass. By splitting each arch into 3 parts, the waste of the manufacturing process is minimized.
