EDITOR’S LETTER

during my pregnancy and it wasn’t for food. I wanted to be surrounded by shades of nude and pink. I’ve grown to appreciate the quiet power of this palette. Far from saccharine, it brings a softness and sophistication to your wardrobe that can be fresh and subtly arresting. Look at the suit on page 36 of our fashion editorial and you’ll see what I mean. In beauty, this palette is best represented by flawless skin and barely-there make-up so we’ve created some pared down, all-about-skin looks for you in ‘Base Instincts’ on page 62. This is really a celebration of the skin you’re in and our read ‘Perfectly Imperfect’ on page 52 talks about the very healthy shift to a more authentic, inclusive, realistic view of what constitutes beauty. There’s a return-to-innocence quality here too and I’m sure you’ll enjoy the collection of childhood memories we’ve gathered in our travel piece on page 70. I hope it inspires you to design your travel with memory making in mind. The Edgars Travel Desk have put some offers together that will take you back to the wonder of starry nights and warm seas. We’ve covered healthy eating, minimalist (minus the monk factor) décor, gorgeous kidswear, beauty trends and, because softness doesn’t mean no strength, the comprehensive collection of great biker jackets at Edgars this month. To rose-tinted days,

Scent is not all about science. As Christian Dior once famously said, “A woman’s perfume tells me more about her than her handwriting.” Beyond the carefully crafted notes of the perfumer lies a deeper magic, one that draws us in and has the power to alter mood, evoke memory and influence behaviour. For most of us, wearing fragrance is second nature and has become an important part of our daily routine, but it’s not just about smelling sweet; it’s about how we feel the moment that scent settles into our skin. Blake

Lively, face of Gucci Première, tells vogue.co.uk, ‘One of the very few things that I do every single day is put on fragrance. If I’m not wearing make-up, if my hair’s not done, if I’m walking around in pyjamas – I still put my fragrance on. It’s who I am no matter what version of myself I am. It’s the smell that I want to identify with and so it’s directly linked to me in every way.’ Fragrance is certainly part of creating our identity, but our signature scent also alludes to our emotional state. The fragrances we gravitate towards often, consciously

or unconsciously, remind us of a particular time in our lives. Perhaps the floral scent of DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom transports you to your childhood spent outdoors or the fresh, fruity notes of Burberry Body Tender remind you of your favourite season. It is this subtle, intangible element of scent that gives it its mystery. As for the secret alchemy that makes a scent mingle with your skin, this is equally illusive. Perfumes may be created in a

controlled environment, but once released from their bottle, they take on a new life, interacting with your body’s natural oils and hormones to create a scent that is unique to you regardless of how many people share the same one. Perhaps this is part of the allure of fragrance – it is never just one thing. Perfumery is an art and like all art, it means something different to everyone. Fragrance engages us on many levels, casting a spell that makes us fall in love with every spritz.

Finding your fragrance match If you struggle to find the right scent for you, follow these tips to make your next visit to the fragrance counter an easy one. Know your fragrance families Narrow your focus to one particular fragrance family be it floral, fruity or Oriental. Know your skin type How long a scent lingers isn’t only related to the quality of the

fragrance. If you suffer from dry skin, a perfume won’t adhere as well so an eau de parfum, which is more concentrated, is a better choice than an eau de toilette. Keep your beauty shelf in mind Before deciding on a particular fragrance, consider the rest of your beauty products. You want to make sure that your signature perfume complements the other scents in your beauty artillery. Try before you buy Give a scent a few hours to settle before you commit to buying it.

The no-make-up beauty trend had us buzzing as we watched it take centre stage this season. As always, Marc Jacobs blazed the trail here by sending models down the runway with shaggy locks and bare, dewy skin.

Club tip Emulate the natural, rosy glow created by make-up artist Pat McGrath for the Dolce & Gabbana and Versace runway shows by applying foundation to the face and then gently wiping it off the cheeks with a tissue before adding a sweep of blusher. club 00  edgarsclub.co.za

Swept away vs. Down the middle

Echoing the real beauty theme of the season, hair followed a similar path and was nonchalantly swept to one side as at Ralph Lauren or parted just off centre as seen at Chloé. Both are equally on trend so choose the style that best suits your face shape. If you’ve got an oval or heart-shaped face, a middle parting will work well, but for those with a square shape, a deep side part softens your features. STELLA MCCARTNEY

Designers fell in love with powdery petal hues this season and the colour palette extended to beauty too. A wash of pale pink over the lids added a sense of sophistication to Stella McCartney’s show while the metallic mauve eyeshadow at Derek Lam gave the ‘70s-inspired collection a modern edge.

Make-up artist Peter Philips gave us a glimpse of the future with his textural twist on liner at Dior. Applying laser-cut strips of satin in muted pastels to the models’ upper lash line, he created a look that was soft yet striking and totally innovative.

WHY healthy living is here to stay Will our worship of wellbeing bring an end to our sugar-loving ways? Club’s Rosie Goddard looks at our growing love for healthy eating

s

crolling down your average social media feed these days you’d be forgiven for thinking we’re a world gone bananas for health. If it’s not a post about low-carb diets or anti-sugar campaigns, it’s the top ten superfoods to try and a picture of that new juice bar down the road. While many a trend has come and gone, our interest in our wellbeing has continued to grow and healthy lifestyles have become increasingly aspirational. Regardless of whether you’re eating less gluten or going full vegan, the fact is that people across the world are actively choosing healthier lifestyles. Celebrities have played a huge role in raising awareness around health with various members of this often fickle community doing a lot to promote it as a way of life rather than a quick fix. Miranda Kerr has extolled the benefits of whole foods (unprocessed or unrefined foods) for years while Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba have created careers out of their passion for educating people about healthy lifestyles, not only sharing health tips and creating an awareness of issues such as food ethics, but also encouraging their followers to engage in this dialogue with them. Even Michelle Obama has weighed in, tirelessly campaigning for better food in schools.

Get started For healthy food inspiration, look to these bloggers

Similarly, a new generation of young, passionate (not to mention stylish) ‘wellness warriors’ are changing the way we relate to health online – and they’ve got the blog hits to prove it. One such person is Ella Woodward of deliciouslyella.com. Sharing daily recipes on her blog, Ella has made it her mission to change the perception that healthy food can’t be delicious. She now gets 150 000 hits daily with her best-selling cookbook appealing to vegans and even the most skeptical of meat lovers alike. More than just engaging with these ideas, industry insiders have noticed an actual shift in the way we’re living. With sales of fast food, processed foods and sugary drinks falling around the world, Wellness Warehouse founder Dr. Sean Gomes says that increased access to information means we’re more empowered than ever before when it comes to our lifestyle choices. Over the last eight years, he’s noticed a serious growth in interest around healthy living locally with many consumers eschewing overly-processed foods, instead requesting things like superfoods and ‘free from’ products in store. Even children as young as four are learning about healthier food choices through creative programs such as Farm to School in the US. It seems we’re no longer buying into the ‘stories’ sold to us by the food industry; we want to know what we’re putting into our bodies and how it affects us. Misha Dhupelia, a vegan activist who quit her job at 5FM to start Joburg eatery, Conscious 108, believes that as we become more knowledgeable about our health, an almost irreversible change in mindset takes place. For example, once you’ve experienced the benefits of living life without refined foods such as sugar, you can’t unlearn that knowledge. You might eat a doughnut every now and then but you’ll never look at them club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

deliciouslyella.com This gorgeous British blogger is dedicated to producing delicious vegan meals and reinventing comfort food – you’ll never miss the bad stuff again.

in quite the same way. With this in mind, it’s easier to understand why, once you’ve started, getting healthy isn’t something you turn your back on. It involves a permanent shift in thinking and lifestyle that inevitably benefits both the body and mind. No one knows this more than Beatrice Holst, owner of much buzzed-about Cape Town restaurant, Raw and Roxy. After developing arthritis, she effectively cured herself through diet alone and has been a committed ‘rawist’ ever since. This bubbly entrepreneur now spends her time educating the diverse customers that frequent her restaurant – from pensioners to local taxi drivers – on the powers of nutrition and its effects on the body. While progress is being made, specialised health foods and fresh produce remain expensive, however, change is afoot and it won’t be long before healthy foods are available at reasonable prices. In their latest consumer report, investment company Goldman Sachs stated that healthy living is fast becoming the new norm, meaning businesses from food producers to fashion brands will have to be more transparent in their practices and embrace this cultural shift to suceed in the future. This changing mindset is part of a much wider ‘green’ phenomenon. As Dhupelia puts it, “this is about so much more than the long-term improvements to our wellbeing; it’s a growing conscious movement towards a more sustainable way of life which will benefit us and generations to come”.

SPA therapy

Beauty consultant and founder of The Matte Project Mathahle Stofile enjoyed a day of indulgence at Bakwena Spa

club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

the hot stone full body massage followed by a foot, ankle and calf massage and scrub. Then came the surprisingly pleasing hand and forearm massage. I ended the day with my absolute favourite treatment: a scalp, neck and shoulder massage. The orange oil used on my scalp gave my hair a healthy shine while the combination of vanilla and lavender cream rubbed on my neck and shoulders was deeply relaxing. An added bonus was spending an extra ten minutes dipping my feet in the Mr. Nibble Pool where little fish nibbled away at all the dead skin, leaving me with smooth, soft feet. It’s great for eczema too and only costs an extra R100. Leaving Bakwena, I felt lighter on my feet. The eased tension in my shoulders and neck is what impressed me the most. I arrived home to my newborn, three-year-old child and husband with renewed energy and in a much more cheerful mood – a win for everybody.

I have been at home cocooning for the past six weeks. While many of you frolicked on beaches, put on your best party frocks and nursed blinding hangovers over the festive season, I was at home looking after a newborn. While I was thrilled to finally welcome my second child, I wasn’t prepared for how difficult the recovery would be. So there I was, swollen ankles and all, fantasising about the day I would be able to visit a spa again. Imagine my excitement when I was asked to spend a full day at Bakwena Spa. Based in Centurion, Bakwena is far away enough from home to feel like a real escape – just what I needed. Although it was only 8am when I arrived, the temperature had already reached 20 degrees so the cool, lemon scented interior of the spa was truly appreciated. After a full English breakfast, I was treated to a non-beauty hydration aloe facial involving a deep cleanse, exfoliation, a facial massage and a mask. After the 50-minute treatment, my skin felt plumped and smooth. Next was the body treatment for which I chose the mealie-meal scrub made with mealie meal and rose gel. The fine texture of the mealie meal made it feel more like sand grains than a coarse scrub while the rose gel gave it a lovely floral scent. After rinsing off in the shower I was given a short massage before lunch was served. Next was
