I

have a photograph that I cherish – it’s of my daughter and niece playing in the fallen leaves that covered my mother’s garden last autumn. They’re bright-eyed and giggling, and a great symbol of how to embrace change. Autumn, as a transitional season, is the perfect time to play along the change spectrum, whether you go for an easy wardrobe update, a fun experiment beyond your comfort zone or a lifechanging jump. We’ve covered all that and more in this issue. Read about four fashion-savvy folk who ditched their go-to styles for something a little different in ‘Make A Change’ on page 42 – we all gave a collective sigh at Kgomotso Matsunyane’s account of her introduction to lacy lingerie. Our ‘Power Pairing’ on page 20 offers simple and cost-effective change solutions, leaving you free to indulge in the very ladylike line-up from Edgars in our fashion editorial ‘State of Grace’ on page 56, or the ultimate big-impact beauty products on page 64. Once you’re done shopping, settle in for soul-stirring stories on leaps of faith, survival and the rewards of courage and kindness in our feature ‘Life, Interrupted’ on page 34. Keep growing,

the BRIGHT HEELS Last year was all about wearing the monochrome trend from head to toe. This season, go from ‘mod’ to modern and add a fresh colour kick to your outfit. We love how these crimson Mary Janes offset the conservatively sexy houndstooth dress. No colour is off limits – go as bright as you dare. Dress, R499.95, Mary Jane heels, R199.95, both Kelso

the biker jacket Our dedication to the little black dress knows no bounds. For the cooler autumn days ahead, step away from predictable and partner your LBD with a biker jacket in a light shade. Less rock than its classic black counterpart, it’s an elegant combination with a touch of attitude. Biker jacket, R599.95, dress, R449.95, both Kelso

The boyfriend jeans White shirts are a wardrobe staple but they needn’t be all work and no play. A pair of this year’s denim essentials (slightly distressed boyfriends with rolled-up hems) transform the classic shirt from 9-to-5 to weekend chic. High heels and a tomboy-esque watch are the finishing touches. Charter Club blouse, R399.95; boyfriend jeans, R399.95, heels, R199.95, both Kelso

THE TRANS ITION ALS by lameez hendricks photography sĂŠbastien rohner

The change of season can sneak up on you. Autumn heralds the time to pack away your summer sandals, dig out the light knits and reassess your beauty repertoire. Our beauty edit of five essentials will help ease you into the new season

The ultimate body cream La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Souffle Body Cream, R3 865 Very little evokes a sense of nurturing quite like massaging a deliciously rich body cream into your skin. And when that cream’s caviar-based concoction is designed to firm and rehydrate, you know you’re in for an indulgent pick-me-up.

The busy-girl’s skin saviour Sisley Youth Hydrating - Energizing Early Wrinkles, R1 845 (Exclusive to Edgars) A new season is a great time to assess your skincare routine, or even start one if you’ve haven’t already. Sisley designed this range specifically for women aged 25 to 35, and by ‘early wrinkles’ they mean those fine lines that aren’t quite severe enough to warrant an intense anti-ageing regime. With soy, ginseng, ginkgo biloba leaf and vitamin E, this cream will effectively target the initial signs of ageing, refresh tired skin and help maintain its youthful glow.

The classic-with-a-twist scent

Dior Hypnotic Poison Eau de Parfum (50ml), R1 080 This is a new take on an old favourite, featuring base notes of seductive vanilla and heart notes of jasmine sambac. Think of it as the cashmere sweater of the fragrance world: sophisticated and always a pleasure to wear. It’s a comforting touch of luxury that doesn’t overpower – perfect for lifting your spirits on a crisp autumn day.

The new-season skin serum Sampar L’Impossible C-Rum, R695 (Exclusive to Edgars) Tight, itchy skin is a common side-effect of cold and dry weather which is why a serum is as essential to your skin as a warm coat is when the temperature drops. Penetrating much deeper into the skin than moisturiser, this serum boosts hydration while fighting the signs of ageing. It will leave your skin looking – and feeling – beautifully smooth.

The texture of the moment Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Luminous Matte Lip Colour in La Diva, R450 (Exclusive to Edgars) Gloopy gloss is out (for now, at least) and the fading-into-lips look of matte lipstick is having a major moment. Colour is secondary – this look is all about the shift in texture – though a matte finish works its magic best in moody reds and vivid plums, applied to freshly exfoliated lips.

how does your garden grow?

A garden changes with every season and has the potential to be a great source of inspiration. If you haven’t tested your green fingers yet, make this your month to try

the garden guru

South Africa’s most famous and best-loved gardener, Keith Kirsten, shares what keeps his passion alive Your book Gardens To Inspire showcases 25 of your favourite gardens around South Africa. Which three are your favourite? Brenthurst is an indigenous inspiration in the Highveld, with a succession of flowing terraces – it offers some astonishing perspectives. Fresh Woods is the prettiest woodland garden in Elgin with 400 different species and forms of roses. It’s designed in such a way that it’s a delight all year round. Stellenberg is a classical garden and one of the true gems of the Cape – it’s really superb. Which public gardens are a must for South Africans to visit? If you can, try to visit all of the nine national gardens in SA. If you have to choose, put Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay and the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden at the top of your list.

What do you think SA gardens have to offer that perhaps other gardens around the world don’t? Due to our climate we have so much diversity and, in the Cape, the highest number of plant species in one region on Earth. What are your top tips for gardeners for the transition into autumn? The most important thing is to prep the soil before any gardening. Now is also a good time to plant a meadow of wild flowers from seed, or to grow some everyday veggies. Spending time in gardens can be good for the soul. Is there a special part of your garden where you like to sit for inspiration? I am privileged enough to live on the banks of the Crocodile River, at the foot of the Magaliesberg. I love spending late afternoons down at the river with my dogs. Of all the gardens that you’ve visited around the world, which ones have been the most unusual or surprising? The Abbey House Gardens in England – they’re so quirky and unexpected. Then at the other end of the spectrum is the Garden of Ninfa in Italy. It’s set around medieval ruins and, in my opinion, is the finest garden in the world.

WIN To transport you from your armchair to some of the most beautiful gardens in the country, Club is giving away five copies of Gardens To Inspire. SMS ‘GARDENS’, your name and account number to 34448 (SMS costs R1.50) or dial *130* 334# from your cellphone and follow the prompts.

going green Whether you’re just starting out or a bit of a pro, Keith has insider’s tips for you

For the newbie Always start with a design, no matter what style. Think carefully about your climate, topography and soil structure, and design accordingly.

For the urban dweller Space is often an issue but you can still create a great outdoor area with a water feature and herb garden. For the green-fingered Why not build a small shade house for propagating your own plants from cuttings? Try something unusual such as orchids, Cape Primrose and funky succulents.
