I

have a photograph that I cherish – it’s of my daughter and niece playing in the fallen leaves that covered my mother’s garden last autumn. They’re bright-eyed and giggling, and a great symbol of how to embrace change.

South Africa’s most famous and best-loved gardener, Keith Kirsten, shares what keeps his passion alive Your book Gardens To Inspire showcases 25 of your favourite gardens around South Africa. Which three are your favourite? Brenthurst is an indigenous inspiration in the Highveld, with a succession of flowing terraces – it offers some astonishing perspectives. Fresh Woods is the prettiest woodland garden in Elgin with 400 different species and forms of roses. It’s designed in such a way that it’s a delight all year round. Stellenberg is a classical garden and one of the true gems of the Cape – it’s really superb.

Which public gardens are a must for South Africans to visit? If you can, try to visit all of the nine national gardens in SA. If you have to choose, put Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty’s Bay and the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden at the top of your list.

What do you think SA gardens have to offer that perhaps other gardens around the world don’t? Due to our climate we have so much diversity and, in the Cape, the highest number of plant species in one region on Earth.

What are your top tips for gardeners for the transition into autumn?

The most important thing is to prep the soil before any gardening. Now is also a good time to plant a meadow of wild flowers from seed, or to grow some everyday veggies.

Spending time in gardens can be good for the soul. Is there a special part of your garden where you like to sit for inspiration? I am privileged enough to live on the banks of the Crocodile River, at the foot of the Magaliesberg. I love spending late afternoons down at the river with my dogs.

Of all the gardens that you’ve visited around the world, which ones have been the most unusual or surprising?

The Abbey House Gardens in England – they’re so quirky and unexpected. Then at the other end of the spectrum is the Garden of Ninfa in Italy. It’s set around medieval ruins and, in my opinion, is the finest garden in the world.
