Mexico
Where and when: In Mexico from 31 October to 2 November, coinciding with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Why: The festival remembers loved ones who have died. It’s believed that their spirits return once a year and, despite the sombre name, it’s actually a time of celebration. What: For a festival honouring death, Dia de los Muertos is surprisingly colourful and vibrant. A glimpse inside most homes will show intricate altars softly glowing under the light of candles, adorned with tributes to the family’s lost loved one. Floral wreaths, skulls, marigolds, photographs, favourite food and trinkets are all lovingly laid down to welcome the spirits back to their old homes. People visit local cemeteries, covering graves in tea lights and flowers, and at night, city courtyards welcome those paying tribute to the departed at marigoldfestooned altars where they dance, drink and celebrate the lives of those that have passed. Experience this incredible cultural celebration right in the heart of Mexico. The Deal valid 28 October – 4 November 2014. offer includes flights from joburg, return airport transfers, six nights at Best Western Royal Zona Rosa on a room only basis. R18 463 per person sharing. minimum two people. *festival costs not included club 74 edgarsclub.co.za

Dia de los Muertos
Happy days
It doesn’t get much brighter than this. Take a look at five of the world’s most vibrant festivals and imagine being part of the colourful chaos India
Holi Festival
Where and when: A Hindu festival, which is celebrated throughout India during the full moon on the eve of the spring equinox (usually February or March). Why: Holi, or the ‘festival of colours’, heralds the beginning of spring and traditionally the triumph of good over bad as people say goodbye to the gloom of winter and embrace the joy of summer. What: In the days leading up to Holi, mounds of coloured powder are laid out like spices in a market. Special dishes are prepared and a bonfire is lit the night before to mark the triumph of light over evil. As the festival draws closer, people congregate in public spaces. A bloom of powder goes up, and before you know it, the air is thick with exploding colour. The crowd dances to traditional Holi music and smears each other with powder, with the true triumph of the day being Get right into the heart of this explosion of colour. The Deal valid february-march 2015. offer includes flights from joburg, Return airport transfers, five nights at The Raj Hotel in an Executive Double room with Bed and Breakfast. Thailand
Loy Krathong Where and when: Across Thailand, on full moon in the 12th month of the traditional Thai lunar calendar (usually November). Why: Also known as The Festival of Lights, Thais give offerings to Buddha in the form of floating lanterns. What: Rivers and lakes are lined with fairy lights as everyone makes their way down to the water’s edge carrying lanterns and floating offerings, which are loaded with candles, food, incense and flowers. While incense breezes through the air, the glowing lanterns are released into the sky. The lotus-shaped ‘Loy Krathongs’, made from bread (which is eaten by fish) or banana tree trunk, are then pushed off into the water with a candle to symbolise longevity, the fulfilment of wishes and release from sins. Be mesmerised by this magical festival of lights. The Deal valid november 2014. offer includes flights from joburg, return airport transfers in bangkok and phuket, one night at Radisson Suites Bangkok in a Superior room with Bed and Breakfast and six nights at Deevana Patong Resort & Spa in a Superior room with Garden View and Bed and Breakfast. Brazil
Rio Carnival
Where and when: In the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro just before Lent, which falls before Easter. Why: It started as a last celebration for Catholics before the austerity of Lent, but has grown to include everyone. What: The energy is tangible during the buildup to one of the best-known parties in the world. As the final touches are put onto floats (which sometimes take a year to construct) and competing samba groups perfect their routines, people gather in the sun-drenched streets waiting for the world-famous parade. The air is filled with the sounds of samba as the parade filters by and performers celebrating on top of grand floats encourage the excited crowd to join in the festive madness. It’s impossible not to get caught up in the lively music and general euphoria. Shimmy and shake your way into the world’s biggest party. The Deal valid 31 March – 7 April 2015. offer includes flights from joburg, Return airport transfers, six nights at Arcos Rio Palace in a Standard room with Bed and Breakfast. R17 992 per person sharing. minimum two people. *festival costs not included
Spain
La Tomatina
Where and when: In the town of Buñol, on the last Wednesday of August. Why: Legend has it that in 1944 some village boys were denied permission to participate in a parade, so they started throwing tomatoes at passers-by. Eventually it became a tradition and La Tomatina was born. What: La Tomatina is not for the fainthearted. Entering the world’s biggest food fight means preparing for battle as 20 000 participants descend on the streets. Trucks come in carrying a few tons of overripe tomatoes and before you can discuss your plan of attack, you’re in the thick of the fight, ducking, throwing and dodging as the streets and their occupants slowly turn red. Anything goes in the tomato-throwing madness – the only rules are that only squashed tomatoes can be thrown. club 76 edgarsclub.co.za
