and fresh growth, there’s something tender and tentative about spring. Even though rainy Cape Town doesn’t guarantee the bright day and bed of fragrant sweetpeas of my childhood, I am still thrilled by summer’s prelude. Our trends issue is sure to get you excited about the summer season. We have a host of great buys from Edgars in our fashion stories on page 34 and 44. In beauty, ‘The Power of Pairing’ (page 62) shows you how to take a pastel palette into the sophisticated sphere while our beauty trend report ‘Capitals of Cool’ will have you all set for a sartorial summer. Speaking of which, we look at fashion’s emerging capitals (think Tokyo and Jozi) on page 74 and offer Club members great travel deals over Fashion Week in each city. In the spirit of re-emergence, we considered the cult of reinvention and who does it well on page 38. It’s fascinating how style can shape identity. Though trends are fleeting, they can bring a new you into being – even if it’s just a brief fling with fashlete or sweet grunge (pages 22 and 26). Visit edgarsclub.co.za for more great offers and competitions, exclusive to Club members. To brighter days!

Whether it’s the fashionable locals at corner cafés or the imaginative graffiti, the streets of Melbourne are a constant source of creative inspiration
Move over Paris and Milan. A handful of emerging fashion capitals are stealing the limelight from traditional fashion hubs, providing the industry with new creative energy
Melbourne AUSTRALIA
Stylish and well put together, the people of Melbourne take fashion seriously, and with such a great array of international brands and local boutiques, it’s easy to see why. Its diverse population has given rise to a general style known as ‘fusion fashion’, which comes from a careful combination of British tailoring and quirky Asian styling, blended together with a classic, effortless Australian approach. Exploring the city, you see how on the pulse and aesthetically beautiful Melbourne is. From its gorgeouslydesigned restaurants and world-class food, to tree-lined avenues and Victorian architecture, the street style, graffiti and culture, Melbourne is a hub of inspiration waiting to be unlocked. The ‘laneways’ of Melbourne add to the city’s identity. Tucked off wider streets, each has its own character and charm, and it’s here you’ll find fashionable locals sipping on cocktails at al fresco bars and cafés, and various attractions from galleries to antique stores and boutiques.
Head to the CBD for amazing international and local designer shopping, as well as a number of fascinating museums. Fitzroy, the bohemian heart of the city, is known for the hottest restaurants and great one-off finds. For markets and more great food and shopping, visit the leafy suburb of St Kilda and head to the cultural centre of the city, Federation Square, for launches, outdoor film screenings and exhibitions. It’s impossible to visit Melbourne and not feel its growing creative scene. A little inspiration: Melbourne fashion blogs are the epitome of style. Club’s favourites are streetsmith.com.au and loveshopshare.com. Where to shop: Chapel Street for the best fashion mix, from high-end to second-hand stores and great Aussie designers. Also pop into Jac + Jack and the Green With Envy boutiques. When to visit: The cooler months of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best. Fashion week: Melbourne S/S 2015 Fashion Week from 30 August – 7 September 2014.

Tokyo JAPAN
Tokyo is a city of contrasts. Modern technology and old-fashioned manners; flashing lights and quiet neighbourhoods; sky scraping office blocks and ancient temples. Their fashion follows suit with half the urbanites dressing down in minimalist, elegant monotones and a variety of subcultures donning everything that is weird and wonderful. For many, eccentricity has become the norm and stepping into certain districts of Tokyo such as Harajuku can feel like stepping into a Willy Wonka-type dream world. Progressive, experimental and avant-garde, it’s the local designers that are the tastemakers out here. Observing trends, they translate them into creations that are uniquely Japanese with brighter colours, higher platforms and quirkier patterns. In the case of the most extreme dressers who follow the ‘Lolita’ trend (doll-like make-up, lace, ribbons and frills), you’d be forgiven for thinking they were gearing up for a fancy dress. Tokyo’s fashion is so advanced that international designers are now looking East for inspiration for future collections, according to Connie Wang, editor of Refinery29.com. The city, too, is a forward-thinking, chaotic metropolis; cleaner and more efficient than most first-world countries and with an electric energy pulsing through its streets that trumps even New York. To experience the unconventional side of Tokyo, it’s best to explore the city on foot. The buzzing shopping district of Shibuya is great
for local designer boutiques. See what wacky Japanese art and design is all about at the Mori Art Museum and, just because you can, why not head to one of the ever-popular cat cafés scattered over the city (yes, that’s a café where you go to play with cats). For a population known for being so reserved and polite, their progressive fashion and offbeat culture is what makes Tokyo such an intriguing place to visit. A little inspiration: To really get your head around Japanese fashion, check out tokyofaces.com. Where to shop: The Ginza district has the best shopping and great cafés for when you need to take a break. When to visit: Visit in Spring (March to May) for lovely weather and beautiful cherry blossom photos. Fashion week: Mercedes-Benz S/S 2015 Fashion Week from 13-19 October 2014.

The number of artisans and local designers have increased in Joburg over the last few years as the city seems to be embracing its creative flair
Once considered a stopover point for travellers on their way to other parts of Africa, Joburg has cemented itself as a destination in its own right, and a fashion forward one at that. The city has changed a lot over the last few years. Areas once downtrodden and forgotten in the wake of apartheid have been revamped and are drawing a fashion crowd that’s as exciting as it is diverse. This melting-pot culture is the exact reason why Joburg’s style has developed in such a unique way. Urban, street-chic and unapologetically edgy, Joburgers have brought international trends to life with a distinct African flair. Milisuthando Bongela of missmillib.co.za spoke to W Magazine about her take on the city’s style saying, “Joburg is just being itself, which is what makes it sexy and cool”. To really experience the new Joburg and its mix of
stylish people, you have to head away from the malls and suburbia of places like Sandton. Braamfontein is one of the up-and-coming areas to explore fashion, design and culture – even Scott Schuman of the blog thesartorialist.com paid it a visit when he was there. With the Wits Art museum, great cafés and artisan food of the Neighbourgoods Market all within a short distance of each other, there’s no excuse not to visit. The same can be said for the Maboneng district. A creative space of bars, galleries and stores, it’s here that you can check out designers such as Stoned Cherrie and Loin Cloth & Ashes, whose owner Anisa Mpungwe sources the funkiest of fabrics from neighbouring African countries. With Joburg Fashion Week around the corner, it’s the perfect time to visit and become familiar with some of the city’s emerging local talent. A little inspiration: Check out iseeadifferentyou.tumblr.com for a unique perspective on Joburg culture, youth and fashion. Where to shop: The Maboneng district for one-off fashion and décor finds. When to visit: November to January is a great time to visit with lots of events taking place. Fashion week: SA Fashion Week from 15-18 October 2014. Turn to Club VIP on page xx to win a VIP experience at Joburg Fashion Week.

Innovative concept stores sit next to vintage boutiques and big name brands, adding to Stockholm’s diverse fashion scene
Stockholm

sweden
An icy wonderland in winter and a leafy playground in summer, this Nordic city is a visual feast with the people populating its streets being no exception. Known for its splendid architecture and penchant for minimalist design, it’s no wonder that the city that produced H&M, IKEA and Acne, has come into its own as a fashion destination. ‘Less is more’ would be an accurate description of Swedish fashion as unspoken style rules follow muted colours and refined simplicity with an androgynous edge. In keeping with its fashion sense, the city oozes minimalist cool with contemporary industrial restaurants and an endless range of well-designed concept stores. The best time for people watching is throughout Fashion Week, which takes place in August during the endless light-filled days of Scandinavian summer. The crowds are at their most chic and it’s also the perfect time to see what the city has to offer in the way of design and creative inspiration. Head to the ever-trendy SoFo district with its array of fashionable shoppers and vintage boutiques. While you’re there, pop into the Urban Deli for a Swedish fika (coffee and pastry). For the ultimate in Swedish design, interior decorator Svenskt Tenn’s studio is a must-see and feels more like a gallery than a store. With amazing new hotels,
galleries and restaurants cropping up to cater to design-conscious travellers, Stockholm is definitely having its moment. A little inspiration: The amazing carolinesmode.com captures the essence of Stockholm street style. Where to shop: The SoFo district is definitely the best; be sure to pop into Acne and Swedish designer Filippa K, who is fast becoming a household name. When to visit: During the summer months of June to August as the temperature is pleasant and daylight lasts for up to 24 hours. Fashion event: Mercedes-Benz S/S 2015 Fashion Week from 26-28 August 2014.
