T

he summer countdown has officially begun. When putting this issue together, our fashion and grooming team jetted off to the sunny shores of Zanzibar to bring you inspiration of sun, sand and sea… everything you want for summer. What trends will you try this season? We’ve selected our favourite runway looks (p8) and shown you how to wear them your way (p24). I’m going to be embracing colour in a big way, like Man of Style, photographer and blogger Trevor Stuurman (p18). Whether you’re embracing the latest trends or prefer to stick to the classics, there’s something in this issue for you. Summer also means spending more time outdoors – from the country’s top music festivals (p60) to the best mountain bikes (p70) and my favourite childhood activity, skateboarding (p68). I’ve got my eye on that Urban Steed, how about you? Of course, spending more time in the sun means taking extra care of our skin. See page 52 to find the top products you need to beat the ageing battle. We’re also honoured to have chatted exclusively with Mr. Jean-Paul Gaultier (“JP” as I like to call him) on the release of his latest fragrance, Le Beau Male (p44). May you have a super stylish summer. I’ll see you on the beach!

The fight for remote control Carla Calitz dreams of channel-surfing the full DSTV bouquet. But then David Moseley can’t understand why the ride always stops on grim reality channels

I envy my friend Sam – she’s utterly ruthless, ruling her lounge with an iron fist clamped jealously over the TV remote. There’s no bickering about what show to watch; her family has learnt the hard way that ‘Mom always knows best, especially when she doesn’t.’ My mom, however, brought me up to be fair-minded and generous (read: a borderline wimp), so I stood no chance when The Big Guy and I attempted to combine our TV tastes. Because the sun appears to come up in his eyes, I was initially happy to watch emaciated, Lycra-clad freaks turn their pedals for eons on end in the Tour de France or the Giro. But then I started looking forward to the finish lines, and the crashes (John-Lee Augustyn’s spectacular spider-monkey up the side of that mountain is my all-time favourite). Oh, and the doping scandals. Yes, Lance is bad but at least he made his sport vaguely watchable! Then, there are The Big Guy’s other myriad TV transgressions: He sneakily views the next instalment in a series while I’m at work. He doesn’t believe in channel-surfing! He won’t let me watch Carte Blanche like the rest of SA does, but has a sweet tooth for pap like Revenge. Like clockwork, he falls asleep every night midway through one of our shared TV pleasures. He’s purchased not one, but three remotes to ensure I’m continually flummoxed by how exactly they work. But, in the interests of promoting gender equality and avoiding the marriage counsellor, I’ll admit to the following: I’ve been known to spoil plot lines. It’s not my fault, really. When I was a kid, I was nicknamed ‘Square Eyes’ because of my TV obsession, and consequently, I inadvertently learnt the mechanisms of scriptwriting. But back then, I was praised for being so clever! Ladies, if you’re heading into a new relationship and want to avoid the ugly power plays over the remote, ensure you follow the lead of my heroine, Sam, not mine.

He said…

My wife, she’s a smart gal. An engineer. No ordinary engineer, but one that builds robots and the like for use in extreme environments. Not content with keeping ship radars upright in stormy seas, she’s now decided that a career in renewable energy might be appealing. See, she wants to help protect the environment. Smart, savvy, energy-conscious. The world needs more people like Mrs Moseley. That’s why I see it as my duty to keep her away from the television and its mind-numbing programming. Channel surfing is bad for your brain cells, my darling. Here let me take that remote. I’m sure that Say Yes to the Dress can only harm your career prospects. No my love, it’s not your turn to watch Cake Boss. And besides, think of all that sugar, laced with stupidity, rotting your teeth and your brains. This is the curse of the TV remote. It’s an enabler. A fiend that seeks out your weakness and takes you down the road of addiction. In this relationship, I see myself as the protector. It’s my job to ensure that the likes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Extreme Cakes: That One Time We Tried to Build An Eiffel Tower Replica and Transport It on a Penny-Farthing don’t consume the brightest mind in my household. Me, I’m too far gone. Too many years of ‘remote’ parenting and early Jackie Chan kung-fu movies – those fabulous Hong Kong productions where the sound from Jackie’s mouth comes out 20 seconds after his lips have moved – have truly addled my brain. That’s why I claim ownership of the remote. That’s why I need to watch 13 rugby matches in a row on Saturday, followed immediately by the 17-hour highlights packages. It’s not because I want to. It’s because I have to. It’s all for you, my lovely, intelligent wife. It’s all so that your brain matter doesn’t start seeping from your ears. The remote is mine, because I love you too much to watch you suffer.
