S
ell a car. I’ve discovered that it’s the perfect way to see the diversity in our society. One couple measured the space in the back to check if they could sleep in it when touring, the other guy wanted to know if I’d been ‘nice to her’ and another wanted to get it souped-up, you know, like, “add a little bling”. I was going to say weird, but I’m not; they’re different and that’s what makes living here fantastic. Difference. And because of that difference we’ve tried our best to showcase some of the amazing and varied gear you can get at Edgars in this issue. Choose from the slick and stark white-themed suits in ‘A Cut Above’ on p38 and enjoy the promise of a tropical heatwave in ‘Spirit of the Wild’ on p32. Or if you’re heading to the beach check out ‘Summer in the City’ on p46. Stuck for somewhere to go? Read about our quirky getaways for something a little extraordinary on p60. If you’re throwing a party do the right thing and feed your guests properly: see p64. Then check out our selection of summer shades (p24) and swim shorts (p26) before you hit the beach. We also welcome our new backpage columnist Nkosiyati Khumalo this month, who’ll have you nodding your head and chuckling at the end of every issue (p74). You’ll notice we’ve added two new icons BEST to help you navigate the shopping maze. BUY Best Buy goes without saying and Ed’s Pick is something I think is a great buy. It might not be the most inexpensive item, but the ED’S value goes beyond its cost. Either way, PICK looking good has never been this affordable.

Glamping. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. In the Elgin Valley, 10 classic American trailers are parked on a slope with a view. Each has a unique interior designed by a Capetonian artist with themes like ‘For better or for boerewors’ and ‘Mills and Boon’. It’s trailer park, but it ain’t trash. Some trailers have an attached lounge and bathroom. Meals are served in a designer barn and kids are catered for with special menus and an indoor playground. With a name like that, it must be a place where you can let your hair down. Near Clarens in the Eastern Free State is a castle inspired by the story of the princess with the abundant mane, where you get royal treatment and stay in fantasy rooms. You’re not surrounded by old pantomime props, thankfully. The décor and art include cornerstones from Windsor Castle and tapestries from Dubai. Rapunzel’s Tower has two double rooms for four, with en-suite bathrooms. Braai in the Chamber of Angels, watch the day end from Sunset Corner and find your Zen in the fairy-tale garden. You can book out the entire place if you wish and are also able to order breakfast and dinner. RATES From R500 per person per night during the week and R1 300 per person per night on weekends. Children under 12 stay free. ROUTE Outside Clarens, towards Golden Gate, three hours from Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein. Satyagraha House
Mahatma Gandhi lived here in 1908 and 1909, working on his philosophy of passive resistance that would leave an indelible mark on the world. It’s a unique combination of guesthouse and museum and has been restored to preserve its original spirit. No electronic devices or alcohol are allowed, but you can look forward to great vegetarian food, as well as massages and yoga on request. Try to find your still point in Gandhi’s original meditation room. RATES From R1 735 for a comfort room and R3 993 for suites, per night. A family cottage is available too. ROUTE In Orchards, Johannesburg. GPS 26°15’25.39”S 28°07’43.92”E IDEAL FOR Anyone who feels the need for some transcendental time. QUIRK QUOTIENT 4/5. The Beach Camp
If the pioneer spirit has been bred out of your gene pool, camping seems too much work. But you can rough it without the blisters or sore muscles at The Beach Camp near Paternoster. It has pre-pitched tents and all the camping gear you’ll need. There is no electricity and facilities are shared, backpacker style. You could also book the entire place for up to 20 people in the set-up tents, with extra space for 10 DIY-types to peg down their own. That’s a beach party of 30 that could become truly epic. RATES Starting from R678 per night per couple sharing. ROUTE From Cape Town along the West Coast for about 90 minutes. GPS -32°81’88.019”S 17°85’53.047”E IDEAL FOR Groups of friends. Namakwa Mountain Suites
If the local meerkats had budget to build up their burrows, they might go for something like these three luxury mountain suites. Welcome to the wonder domes, shaped like traditional Nama huts and mirroring the granite koppies dotting this stretch of Namaqualand. On offer are big beds, en-suite bathrooms and a view to all horizons. At dinnertime there’s no need to look for scorpions under rocks or dig for uintjies, as gourmet meals are served at the main house. RATES R3 150 for two guests (dinner, bed and breakfast package). Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse
A romantic gourmet getaway is the standard description for this rustic, luxurious lodge in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. There are only 11 rooms in classic farmhouse style, so expect loads of atmosphere and no crowding. Chef Richard talks you through his wholesome country menu in the colourful Pioneer Room. His current signature dish is sautéed red onion encased in caramel puff pastry on a reduction of pecorino and chive. It’s about food – even Cleopatra’s published recipe books win awards – but also a haven that oozes old-school charm. ROUTE Via the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, in the Kamberg Valley. GPS 29°19”28.1’S 29°40”17.0’E RATES From R1 895 per person, per night with dinner, bed and breakfast. No children under 12. BEST FOR Couples. QUIRK QUOTIENT 4/5. Style and romance. cleomountain.com

Maropeng Boutique Hotel
Want to get in touch with the very base of your African roots? The Cradle of Humankind is the place. Visit the Sterkfontein Caves for a spooky underground tour, which includes the site where Little Foot, a hominid skeleton more than 4.7 million years old, was found. Also try the entertaining boat tour that takes you through the Maropeng caves. The Maropeng Boutique Hotel has four-star luxuries with five-star views. A priceless experience is walking down to the Maropeng site at dusk when the visitors have left. Sit down, take it in and listen out for the ancestors. RATES Double rooms from R2 182 per night (including breakfast). ROUTE R400, just off the R563 Hekpoort. GPS 25°58’74.6”S 27°39’87.1”E IDEAL FOR Families, friends, anyone. QUIRKY QUOTIENT 3/5. Agulhas National Park
I asked a restaurant owner in Caledon if Agulhas was worth the trip. “I’ve been living here for 22 years and never been,” she answered bashfully. So, why go? It’s the southernmost tip of Africa, where two oceans meet in a mighty mash-up. Stay in the rest camp in the Agulhas National Park. The digs are wooden, thatched chalets with two or four beds, en-suite bathrooms, and even a flat-screen TV. They’re a shell’s throw from the water with a view of the Indian and Atlantic meeting beyond a pristine beach. For lunch, drive to the lighthouse, built in 1848, and catch the view from the top. There’s a good chance of spotting southern right whales. ROUTE About two hours from Cape Town. GPS 34°48’45.9”S 19°56’30.2”E RATES R980 per person per night (add on an extra R200 per additional adult and R100 per child). IDEAL FOR Couples, nature lovers, families. QUIRKY QUOTIENT 3/5.
