A
friend, who also happens to be a fellow shopaholic, says she can’t wait to swap her colour-drenched summer wardrobe for a more sombre winter palette. “Black and white… Those are the only colours I’m going to wear!” she exclaimed excitedly. For a woman who loves wearing wild prints and sherbet-inspired hues, that’s a pretty big style statement. But I get it. It’s been a long and frivolous summer of clashing brights and pretty pastels. I’m also more than ready to take a holiday from all this excess of colour, and revert to the comfort of my all-time favourite colour, black. Not head to toe, of course, and definitely worn with a big dose of leather trim and accessories. Or paired with winter’s trendiest prints (for me, it’s houndstooth) and complementary colours (I can’t get enough of burgundy and also love the retro combination of black and gold). It’s a grown-up look that feels minimalist yet sexy at the same time. My advice for the season ahead? Take a tip from my stylish friend and decide now what your winter fashion palette is going to be. Classic hues like black, white, navy and grey always work well as a base with bolder colours and prints layered on top. Then make a wish list of all your winter lust-haves and start ticking them off early in the season, so you don’t miss out on any of the first-wave gems. And as always, from me, happy shopping!

PRIZE LETTER Cool and the gang
I’m a mother of three boys, each with their own set of criteria for ‘looking cool’. Edgars certainly comes to the party with the latest in kids’ fashion. Even dad scores cool points with his Aramis skincare products and he practically lives in his clothes from the Edgars Active range. However, it’s enjoying all the Thank U points that really makes the difference. This proud and happy mom thanks you. – Doriane Ribeiro
Thank U rewards We hear what you have to say
For all women
I don’t shop at Edgars but my wife is a loyal customer. I’ve read Club magazine and nowhere do I see fashion solutions for older customers with fuller figures. Are you interested in only the younger, trendier set? – Derick da Silva From Justine: Catering to the more mature and fuller-figured woman is something we are planning to do more of in future issues. Watch this space.
A personal touch
I got so excited when I read the ‘Pretty Woman’ personal shopper article (Dec/ Jan 2013). I can relate to the writer – as a busy mom of two I rarely find time to go shopping. Having a personal shopper is a fantastic idea. I look forward to visiting Edgars Sandton and booking my appointment. – Asha Parbhoo
HOLE-IN-ONE Once a month, my husband and I play golf together. I was delighted when I spotted the special offer on The Players Golf Club, and also decided to treat myself to new golfing gear, including shoes and accessories. My purchases earned me lots of Thank U points. I felt as though I had scored a hole-in-one! – Candace Kops REWARDING SHOPPING I recently needed an outfit for a function but being the end of the month, cash was low. I was thrilled to discover that Edgars was having a Pumped Up Points day and that my Thank U points were worth double. I was able to purchase a full evening ensemble with my Thank U rewards and only paid in R15. Now that’s what I call glamorous. – Raine Fairbairn

OLD SCHOOL The thicker the cream, the more moisture it pumps into your skin. NEW SCHOOL Serums are fast becoming the go-to defence against wrinkles and other signs of ageing: they hydrate, brighten and even-out skin tone. Thanks to their fluid consistency, serums penetrate much deeper than moisturiser, so all it takes is a few drops every morning and night.

OLD SCHOOL A good mask should be thick, gooey and removed after a few minutes. NEW SCHOOL The newer masks have more nourishing ingredients than ever. What’s more, their light texture means that you can wear them to bed, giving the mask plenty of time to repair the day’s damage while you sleep. Twice a week, apply a mask instead of night cream and remove it with cleanser the next morning.

OLD SCHOOL The roughest exfoliator does the best job. NEW SCHOOL Say so long to rough, grainy concoctions: the new exfoliator has a milder texture that promotes skin cell turnover without being harsh on skin. Their ingredients often include fruit enzymes or jojoba pearls (tiny beads of jojoba oil) that gently slough away dead skin for clean pores and a brighter complexion.
