M Getting the right shot can be quite a balancing act
y daily morning dressing dilemma is not one of what to wear but rather what not to wear. That’s because I have a whole wardrobe filled with jeans, denim jackets and blazers, denim shirts, skirts and shorts – so my recent mantra to ‘wear more dresses’ is really not going so well as that’s the one denim item I don’t own. Denim is, for me, the ultimate in comfort dressing. It’s like your favourite home-cooked meal – it just makes you feel good. And this season denim is more exciting than ever, with a strong focus on wearing denim-on-denim in every guise and for every occasion. Think you couldn’t wear denim to a formal event? Think again. Last year J.Crew’s creative director (and regular on the New York social scene), Jenna Lyons, broke the red-carpet mould in a fitted denim shirt tucked into a pink, maxi-length silk skirt. On the runway, denim has transcended its classic legacy to become the go-to fabric for every style imaginable, from metallic-embellished denim jackets as seen on Roccobarocco’s Spring/Summer 2013 catwalk at Milan Fashion Week
to patch-covered denim skinnies at 3.1 Phillip Lim’s New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2013 show. This season’s classic shades of indigo, navy and washed-out blue means denim is, and always will be, timeless – wearable for every age and stage of your life. Funky fashionistas will love the edgier campground styles showcased in the Free 2BU shoot on page 52 while the more sophisticated Edgars shoppers will appreciate the free-spirited yet pareddown Kelso looks in ‘Reach For The Sky’ on page 60.
