party ABCs
Party time again? Don’t stress. Keep it simple with these tips & tricks... FRIENDS INDEED
Toddlers’ parties are usually more about family than friends. By around the age of five, you’ll notice they’ve begun to form their own friendships so let them determine the guest list.
ALL OR NONE?
Your school may have an ‘all or none’ policy regarding party invitations so that kids don’t feel left out. As we all know, limiting the invite list is often both a practical and budget necessity. Take any potential drama out of the situation by handling smaller invitee parties telephonically or via email among parents; not amongst the children.
TIME CHECK
Don’t make the party too long. Specify an end time on the invitation. For littlies, two hours for games, food and cake is more than enough. Any longer and they’ll get too tired.
Party ideas that won’t break the bank
• A ‘Build your own pizza’ party (buy ready-made bases from your local pizzeria). • A beach/forest/park treasure hunt followed by a picnic. • A pamper party for girls, with nail painting, make-up and hair curling and plaiting. • A rainbow party – the kids arrive dressed in their favourite colour. Serve coloured milk, coloured popcorn and a rainbow cake. • A pool, Slip ’n Slide and water games party. • Camping/ sleep-over party in the garden – including roasted marshmallows and ‘survivor’ activities.

TAKE A LOAD OFF…
Let’s face it – a kids’ party can send any mom over the edge. Be kind to yourself and hire an entertainer for an hour or so – whether it’s a magician, puppeteer, hip hop teacher or an arts and crafts expert – and let them take care of things while you catch your breath.
5-MINUTE CUPCAKES
Yes, really! You’ll need: 4 Tablespoons flour 2-4 Tablespoons sugar 2 Tablespoons cocoa 1 Egg 3 Tablespoons milk / apple juice 3 Tablespoons cooking oil A splash of vanilla extract 1 Tablespoon choc chips (optional) 1 Large microwave-safe mug or cup per person
SUMMER SHOWERS
Don’t-panic party ideas for when it rains: • Set up trestle tables in your garage for a painting or Lego fest (ask your local toy shop if their Lego dealer offers parties). • Movie-and-pizza party on mattresses in the lounge. • Indoor treasure hunt. • Fashion show. Divide the kids into teams and give them black bags and masking tape to create ‘outfits’ for their fashion show. • Indoor Teddy Bear picnic. • Bingo – not just for octogenarians!
PRESENTS PLEASE
Your toddler’s natural impulse is to rip the wrapping off a gift the second it’s given to him (and that’s ok!). But once he’s a bit older, put a basket aside where gifts can be placed for opening later. It’s such a shame when carefully chosen gifts are broken or lost in the mayhem. Some birthday kids like to sit in a circle at the end of the party so they can open their gifts and thank the gift giver (maybe take notes so thank you letters can be sent later). Better still, remove gifts altogether and save for opening after the guests have left.
Add dry ingredients to the mug and mix well. Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and continue to mix. Add the vanilla extract (plus optional choc chips), and mix again. Put mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1 000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug but don’t be alarmed. Allow to cool a little before tipping out onto a plate. Frost as desired when cool.
Sugar,
sugar Parties wit h no treats and sweets are no fun at all. Just try to keep balanced, it especially if children younger an are d more pro ne to sugar highs (and those horri fying lows) Include a fe . w healthie r choi as fruit keba bs, veggie cr ces such udités with a dip, finge r sandwich es and cheese wed ges.

KIDS celebrate
CHEC
• From around the age of 10, girls and boys start to like each other again and a party for both sexes is lots of fun. Think about activities that’ll reflect the interests of both and where all will love being involved, such as treasure hunts and pizza-making. • Your tween is most probably mad about music and at this age disco parties are popular. Compile a playlist with your child and ramp things up by hiring a set of lights and a disco ball. • These are the last years to plan smaller parties that are specifically gender oriented. Is your daughter a girly-girl? How about a ‘makeover party’? For adrenaline-junkie boys, a go-karting, skateboarding or outdoor-adventure obstacle course outing might be just up their alley.
THE TRICKY TEEN SCENE...
• For teens, accept the fact that your role as parent is solely that of discreet supervisor and venue and food provider. • Set the boundaries beforehand. Say who’ll clean up afterwards, establish rules about boys and girls disappearing into bedrooms, and organise an activity such as karaoke to break the ice. 16 october 2013
TO PARTY PACK OR NOT? Don’t buy into the party pack hysteria. All kids want is a paper bag filled with silly knick-knacks or stationery. Pop in a couple of sweets (or a homemade music CD) and you’re more than good to go. • Encourage your teenager to introduce their friends to you so they’re aware that while you aren’t going to cramp their style, you are very much around. • Help normalise the social situation for an anxious teen by having some of your own friends around while your teen has theirs. Even better, invite a couple of their friends’ parents over for the duration of the party.
Mr & Miss Manners
Your kids already know that thank yous are essential. Make life easier and keep a list of who gave what while your child opens their gifts. Handwritten notes are lovely but not always practical; at the very least, ensure an SMS is sent with a note on the gift given and a thank you for attending the party. Sit with your child while you send these so they are engaged in the process.
