y the time you read this it should officially be here. Summer, that is. Don’t get me wrong: I like winter, but let’s face it – we don’t live on the southern tip of Africa for the skiing. You’ll find everything you need in this issue to make this your best summer yet. If you’re carrying a little extra winter ‘luggage’ then rush to our CrossFit feature (p66) to find out how to get in shape and actually enjoy the process. If it’s style you’re looking for we’ve got you covered – from our beach break (Going Coastal, p36) to a lazy summer road trip (Chasing the Sun, p42) and everything in between (Mini Break, p24). You’ll also find three sportsmen in the latest active wear profiled in Born Winners (p58). For a healthy dose of inspiration check out our men of style – internationally renowned Pharrell Williams (p28), and local style guru Neil Doveton (p17), who lent his seasoned styling experience to our road-trip shoot. If you’re planning on braaiing anytime soon (and you should be) you’ll want to check out the food feature (Become the Braaissiah, p80) by Andy Fenner – it’s simple, tasty food done well that anyone can make. Whatever you’re up to in the holidays take it easy, and we’ll see you in the new year with another issue filled with great features and, of course, the latest trends to keep you one step ahead. PS: Don’t forget to flip the mag for the festive Gift Guide.

THE DOVETON EFFECT STYLE? NEIL DOVETON HAS IT UP TO HERE. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ON THE FASHION BEAT AND YOU PICK UP A THING OR TWO

PHOTOGRAPHY: STER KINEKOR, MORNE VAN ZYL, SUPPLIED.

A quarter of a century has passed since Neil Doveton began his career in print media and fashion. Ten of those years were spent as Men’s Health SA’s fashion and grooming director; he’s also ventured into the wild-tech west of e-commerce and digital publishing. Now, he’s putting his well-tailored soul into the launch of MrDoveton.com – a curated digital destination designed to help men make informed purchases and keep up to date on trends, what’s available, and where to find it. Earliest style memory? 1971. I was just seven years old when I bought my first tie. I saved up all my pocket money and headed off to the men’s outfitters in the mall near where I grew up. The tie was a garish ’70s purple-andbrown clip-on. I’m not sure whether you even find these anymore? I wore it to death – sporting it proudly with a purple shirt and chocolate-brown corduroy bellbottoms. Favourite item in your wardrobe? And why. Ah, the Sophie’s Choice

question. That’s tough. I have so many favourites. If I had to narrow it down to one item only, it’d have to be my navy blue suit. It’s extremely versatile and makes for an easy transition from day to night. No other suit gives as much mileage. It goes with just about everything. In winter I wear it over a cardigan, shirt and tie combo with brown leather brogues; in summer it’s great paired with a crisp white shirt, pocket square and leather sandals for easy elegance. What will you be wearing these holidays? SPF and all things Resort. The holidays are all about being comfortable: swapping winter’s layers for breathable, easy-towear polo shirts, T-shirts, lightweight knits, cotton shorts and pants in tailored cuts. White is a popular trend this season, and is reliably casual and elegant when worn with navy. Leather strapped sandals are also a sartorial essential in my summer wardrobe. The weekends? Tropical print walk-shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops – Havaianas of course.

The three items every man should have in his wardrobe? Chinos – dressed up or down, they make a stylish and comfortable alternative to jeans. Classic white shirts – they’re the cornerstone of a successful working wardrobe. The perfect blazer – whether cotton, linen or wool, the right blazer will always make you look like you put in more effort than you did. Who influences and inspires your style? Christopher Bailey, the creative director at Burberry. His reinterpretation of the traditional Brit is a fine example of modernising the classics. Also Tom Ford – undoubtedly my style icon – and of course Mad Men’s Don Draper and Suits legend Harvey Specter, who successfully combine just the right amount of style and alluring arrogance.

M EC H A N I S M LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH SOME PROTECTION (OF THE SUNSCREEN VARIETY, OF COURSE), AND YOU’RE SURE TO SCORE – IN THAT YOU’LL SAVE YOUR SKIN FROM SUN DAMAGE, THAT IS BY LAMEEZ HENDRICKS PHOTOGRAPHY SÉBASTIEN ROHNER

TEAM: Light-skinned lads RECORD: You always burn and don’t tan as readily, which means you’re highly susceptible to sun damage.

GAME PLAN:

Givenchy Doctor White10 UniVersal Shield SPF 50 PA+++, R545

Because you feel and notice the burn much quicker than medium- and dark-skinned fellas, you may be smoothing on the sunscreen every day during summer. But to truly make a difference you need to get into the habit of reapplying every two hours if you’re out in the sun for long periods. You should also be using sunscreen during winter, as UV rays still affect your skin on cloudy days. You want medium to high protection, with an SPF of nothing less than 30 – bearing in mind that organisations like European trade association Cosmetics Europe now warn that anything under SPF 15 isn’t up to scratch.

NICHOLAS RUPANGA From Zimbabwe originally but now living in South Africa, Rupanga is a trail runner of the highest pedigree with a number of impressive results under his belt. It’s been a tough year with injuries. Not my best. I was planning on the Otter Trail Run, but for the second year in a row I’ve had to miss it due to injury. I did Comrades in June but it was a tough experience. I passed halfway in just under three hours, but finished in just under 10. I completely blew. From 70km I was walking to the finish. The highlight of my year was definitely the AfricanX, a three-day trail run with runners participating in teams of two. I won it in 2009 and we managed to come

58

second this year. I was happy about that because we’ve struggled for results there in the last few years. The worst of the injuries seem to be over. I’ve done a few comeback races and I’m feeling good. I won the Mountain Warrior in Stellenbosch and the Table Mountain Challenge 21km. So I’m feeling good again. Though I’m a trail runner, I have the potential to finish in the top 10 at something like Two Oceans. My dream is to get a gold at that race. But time is running out. I’m 38 now, so I probably have five years left to achieve that. My running fits in around my work. Luckily the people I work with are very accommodating. We sit down and look at my schedule. Sometimes they even encourage me to do more training.

FISH Tuna really doesn’t get the braai treatment enough. I’m not sure why – the char imparted by the grid works really well with the oiliness of the fish. Rub your tuna steaks down with oil and cumin seeds, then snap them on the braai and cook them for no longer than two minutes per side. When they’ve picked up a nice sear, remove, slice, and serve in wraps with plenty of homemade guacamole, finely sliced raw red onions, a smear of sour cream, a good squeeze of lime juice and a fist of coriander.
