Cold weather brings out the mother in me
The elements seem to need taming through the tucking in of blankets and the proffering of nourishing foodstuffs. So it is with some relish that I offer you our Wellbeing issue. This is a top-to-toe, inside and out look at wholesome habits, nurturing and nourishing. Have a look at our beauty feature ‘Take Care’ on page 64 for a fine line-up of products you’ll need from Edgars for seeing your skin through winter. Our fashion editorial ‘True Grit’ on page 38 encapsulates the season’s often stark, dramatic beauty with a style you’re sure to want to emulate. Of course, feeling good is the result of inner work too, so we asked five notable women to share the disciplines that support their success in ‘Secrets of Success’ on page 24. There’s also nothing quite like a detox to challenge the winter blues. See how it’s done in ‘The Detox Challenge’ on page 34. If juicing seems a stretch, think about getting an expert in to clear your wardrobe or help you get rid of clutter in your life. It’s a widely held wisdom that you get what you give – turn to page 84 for ideas on how to give back on Mandela Day and go on and make someone feel good. After that, grab a blanket and turn to our travel feature on page 72 for destinations that speak to the heart. Take care,

THE TREND
Hit the streets
The sportswear trend is here to stay but there’s not a slouchy T-shirt in sight

HER LOOK Seen on the likes of Cara Delevingne and BeyoncĂŠ, a puffer jacket is a great way to take the sportswear look into the cooler months. Wear your hair loose and pair with a bold print to show you're fashion savvy.
Once a casual look thrown on for gym, sportswear has cemented its place in the world of fashion with urban shapes and textures that have parted ways with their athletic roots.

HIS LOOK The two-tone effect has been around for a while but the combination of textures and dark colours elevates this hoody into a fashionforward item.
her look The edgy mix of smart and casual is reminiscent of London street style. If trainers feel too masculine for you, pair them with an embellished jersey and quilted pencil skirt for a refined, feminine look.

head-to-toe goodness Smooth sensations: The delicate consistency of oils means a few drops will soothe even the driest skin. Massage into skin, hair and body for maximum absorbtion and relaxation. It will feel particularly good for the soul at the end of a dark, cold day. Hints of health: A little oil goes a long way and can be all you need to give winter skin a healthy glow. Use as a prepping product just before applying your foundation for downright dewiness.

Facing the challenge Problem solved: Look on the bright side of these dark, wintry days: less exposure to sunlight causes a decrease in the effects of UV rays on dark spots and patches, meaning pigmentation is easier to deal with. Create an experience: Make the most of winter hibernation by including spa-like rituals into your routine. Set aside time twice a week to tackle rough textures, dulling and dryness. Show your lips some extra TLC by applying generous amounts of lip balm to combat dehydration.

Smooth moves
Get your blender at the ready – it’s time to shake up your meals, says healthy eating fundi Tamsin Sheehy
Homeware live smart What’s your ideal smoothie? For me, it’s all about breakfast being a delicious and nutrient-rich morning feast: filtered cold water, avocado, pineapple, a teaspoon of Green Vibrance [a powder full of concentrated superfoods and probiotics], coconut oil and millet cereal. And an indulgent smoothie treat? I love raw chocolate and nut butter combos: filtered cold water, a tablespoon each of cashew nut butter, raw cacao powder and coconut oil, a whole banana, a few drops of pure vanilla essence and a touch of cinnamon. Yum. The perfect smoothie
What’s so great about smoothies? In our fast-paced lives, it’s often hard to find the time to make a healthy meal and also sit down and chew it properly for optimum digestion. A smoothie fills both gaps. Which immune-boosting ingredients should we be reaching for? Fresh fruit and vegetables can only do good. You could also add wheatgrass (packed with digestive enzymes), echinacea (modulates the immune response to infections), or cayenne pepper (a good stimulant which kick-starts the digestive system). Your favourite winter fruits? Seasonal staples such as grapefruits and guavas are high in vitamin C, and pawpaws contain the essential minerals
magnesium and potassium. Cape gooseberries are deliciously tart. Don’t overlook avocados, which contain essential fats and are very low in sugar – they make a perfect base for any smoothie. Frozen berries are also ideal as they’ve undergone minimal processing and are high in antioxidants. Also remember your vegetables: seasonal greens such as kale and spinach are among the most nutrient-dense leaves on earth.

Lupita Nyong’o is my kind of woman. 6. The most exciting person to have bought your designs? Yvonne Chaka Chaka – what a legendary musician. I was blown away that someone I admire bought one of my pieces. I wasn’t even there to give her a sales pitch – the dress sold itself. 7. What’s your current addiction? Instagram. I’m filtering like crazy. Another great find is the app SketchPad. If I have an idea, wherever I am, I can draw it immediately. 8. Your take on selfies? I adore them. Bad things happen in the world because of low self-esteem, so why not uplift the spirit? 9. Your secret to a happy life? Believing in yourself – once you do that, nothing can stop you. Laz’s Crystal Collection is available at the SAFW X capsule at Edgars Sandton and Melrose Arch

1. If money were no object what would be top of your shopping list? Buying property. My dream home would be in Beverly Hills. I love decor – that would have been my Plan B. 2. Your favourite tunes for the road? Mind-numbing bubblegum pop like Beyoncé’s latest album. When I won the Renault New Talent Search competition I was given a car, so I’m a nervous new driver – and the music takes the edge off. 3. What gives you a buzz? My Crystal Collection, an extension of my Cutterier range. Inspired by braille, the designs have words of encouragement written with Swarovski crystals, such as “You’re worthy” or “You’re beautiful” on the places where people touch you, like the shoulder or waist. 4. The fashion item you’re never getting rid of no matter what’s on trend? My tribal monochromatic ponchos. 5. The movie that you wish you’d directed? 12 Years A Slave. I thought it would make me angry but I was inspired by their approach to the challenging story.
