growth, playfulness and a light heart on the one hand and a powerful perspective and necessary questioning of norms on the other. It also makes me think of my grandfather’s eyes and that they count among the youngest I’ve ever looked into. Youth is not just the domain of the young and it is worth integrating some of its spirit (I don’t mean faking it) before we head over the hill. If you’d like to get into the spirit, have a look at the offering from Edgars in our fun-loving fashion editorial on page 38. You’ll have noticed that fashion has become more talkative than a teenage sleepover – slogans abound – and our read ‘Word on the Street’ on page 26 will give you insight into this phenomenon and its impressive political history. Beauty is also in a graphic mood. We honed in on eyes this month and have brought you some great new looks for your peepers on page 60. Turn to our travel feature ‘Notes From The Bike’ on page 68 if you’re in the mood to rediscover the joy of your first bike and the wonder of the world at a slower pace. As ever, we’ve brought together some choice spoils from our benefit partners. Be sure to visit edgarsclub.co.za for more. Take care,

Do you find that blusher just disappears on your complexion? The secret to perfect application is to layer two different textures in a similar shade over each other. Start with a cream blush on the apples of the cheeks followed by a light dusting of powder blush. – Rene Benkenstein, Colour Artist, Clinique National

When it comes to freshening up your mascara after a long day, forget applying a second coat and reach for your liquid liner instead. A slick of black liquid liner across your lashes will do the trick and won't leave any unsightly clumps. – Germain Moyano, International Make-up Artist, Lancôme

For a flawless, radiant finish, apply your make-up using a brush, preferably one designed for the particular area of your face you're working on. Brushes help blend make-up seamlessly. – Lucoh Mhlongo, National Make-up Artist, Elizabeth Arden

If you struggle with oily skin, resist the urge to starve it of water – less hydration won't solve the problem, despite what some may say. In fact, you want to keep your skin well hydrated so as to increase oil production and prevent dry skin. – Michelle-Lee Collins, Senior Artist, M·A·C Cosmetics

live smart travel

Earlier this year, Sarah Lamond and Michal George cycled through South Africa for charity, rediscovering the beauty of the country along the way There is a magic spot along Route 62 where a chorus of nesting birds invites the weary traveller to stop and spend some time simply listening. But one has to travel slowly, quietly and closely to be rewarded in this way. Zooming along at 120km/h mindlessly listening to the drone of the engine and the background music in the cocoon of an air-conditioned car, so much goes unnoticed. Yet there is so much out there to be experienced. This was our lesson. club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

Our journey began well before the ride launch date of 14 February. We visited the Underberg area in December 2014 and having learnt of the incredible efforts of Sister Abegail Ntleko, who has devoted her life to helping children affected by the AIDS pandemic, we decided to make a personal contribution to her cause. This took the form of pumping up our tyres and cycling through South Africa while spreading the word about our intention to raise money for Kulungile Care Centre in KwaZulu-Natal. And then one fine Saturday morning we set off. Just like that. Our 23-day ride took us along three main routes. We started cycling from Cape Town, through Paarl, Worcester, and Robertson, but the bulk of the first part of the journey was along Route 62. Most days we rode between 80 and 100km, rolling slowly through the Little Karoo, admiring its beautiful rock formations and engaging with its character-filled people. Part two was along the N9 of the Great Karoo, with its flat, wind-swept plains. What this part of the country lacks in population density, it makes up for in the open-heartedness of its inhabitants. Everywhere we stopped we were welcomed and well-looked after. In the Great Karoo there is a sense of great generosity. The third part of the trip was along the R56, where we watched the landscape change day to day – from the thirsty open plains to the green hills of the former Transkei. By then ‘off-the-beaten-track’ was solidly

established as the unintentional theme to our adventure. We stayed on farms kilometres off the main tarred roads and had strangers open their homes to us. It was an amazing privilege to have had the opportunity to connect with our fellow countrymen in this way. On the final day, inching ever closer to our destination, we found ourselves going slower and slower, not for the hills, nor the winds, but as we were overcome with the sadness of bringing this eye-opening adventure to a close. Yet it was not the end, as the nature of this ‘up-close-and-personal’ cycle ride experience will live on forever in our memories, shaping our consciousness like no other travel experience has done before. At the end of our 1 700km trip, we arrived transformed, having experienced South Africa in a new way, and as if, for the first time.

Travel offers You don’t have to be a cyclist to explore these beautiful destinations. Robertson Visit the charming town of Robertson and stop off at the Robertson Small Hotel. Stay in a Stable Suite on a bed and breakfast basis from R1 396 per person sharing per night. Valid between 1 June - 30 Sept.

When I embarked on The Tour of Arae, I felt nervous as I set out over the Franschhoek Pass, but instead of seeing the kilometres ahead as a race, I saw them as an adventure. Easing down the other side of the hill, I felt a wonderful sense of freedom as I glided through the heartbreakingly beautiful surrounds. Aside from travelling through some incredible landscape, there were many moments during the race that felt club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

remarkably special. Some of them were thoughtfully orchestrated by the tour’s organiser, Stan Engelbrecht, while others were unplanned, fleeting, magical moments like eating fresh pancakes at a farm stall in a secluded village and watching a man, walking alone on a dirt path with his headphones on, break into dance unaware there was anyone watching. Far from being lonely, I found riding alone on those dusty paths to be an incredibly enriching experience that called for me to go deep within myself and find sanctuary, especially when the conditions were challenging – over the duration of the race, I experienced everything from sunburn and being blown off my bike by gale force winds, to near hyperthermia from riding in below freezing temperatures. These periods of struggle allowed me to see myself in a new way and helped me discover a quiet inner strength that I never knew existed. After six days on the bike we finally arrived at the Matjiesfontein Hotel in the Little Karoo where we shared our stories around the fireplace and had some much-needed time to reflect on our experience. For me, I realised just how much I surprised myself, which, after all, is what life is all about.

She’s the one

With reality show She’s the One moving into its eighth week, the search for the face of Edgars is now in full swing. Here we meet the team working closely with the contestants for a behind-the-scenes look at the journey so far

Kojo Baffoe Editor of Destiny Man magazine, Kojo takes his seat at the judges table and shares his thoughts on the competition so far The most important quality for the winner to have? Authenticity. What is your top tip for looking put together? Understanding your own style and choosing clothes that suit that aesthetic. Which challenge to date would you have won if you were a contestant? I would say the celebrity styling challenge. I’d hope that with my writing and interviewing experience, I’d be able to draw out their personality. club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

You’re quite the intellect, is this a characteristic you look for in the contestants? Thank you. For me, the only way one can keep growing within these industries is to be engaged and naturally curious. What three books should every woman read? There are so many to choose from. Three books that have impacted my thinking are: Quantum Warrior by John Kehoe, The Wealth Chef by Ann Wilson and Success Through Stillness by Russell Simmons. Which women have had the greatest influence on you? My mother, through her absence – she passed away when I was a child – and my older sister. What surprised you most about working on a reality show? I didn’t realise how intense, emotionally and mentally, it is. What did you learn about yourself during this process? That I can make hard decisions. It’s hard to close the door on someone’s dream, but I’m finding I’m able to keep my personal feelings separate.

live smart reality tv Most awkward moment during filming? The first group elimination when there were two girls named Candice and after calling out the name it was a case of which one. Is hosting She’s the One easier or harder than you thought it would be? Definitely harder because you always feel guilty about ending someone’s dream at elimination and being the bearer of bad news. The perfect woman is… Comfortable with herself. If tension were brewing between two of the contestants, how would you break it? I wouldn’t, I’d press record.

Lunga Shabalala

Which contestant would you choose to be stranded on a desert island with? Nunu because she was a beast on the active challenge and tackled the obstacles with no problem. A female fashion trend that you don’t quite understand? Weirdly enough, everything is making sense for the ladies these days. Favourite episode of the show so far? The adventure episode when the girls had to conquer their fear of heights. What do you tell yourself before going on camera? Do it like you’re doing it for TV. Who’s been the most inspirational woman in your life? My mother by far. She’s the strongest woman I know. club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

Tumi Morake

Known for her comedic genius, Tumi was the perfect choice to judge a reality TV show Which contestant would you be scared to get in a fight with? Pel. She looks like she could throw a good punch. What advice would you give yourself if you were on this show? Make every on-camera moment count. What advice do you have for young women? Time waits for no (wo)man.

When I tell a really good joke, I… generally don’t tell jokes. I do sets, gags, comedy. What would you do if one of the contestants was funnier than you? I would laugh. The more comedians, the merrier. Characteristics you dislike the most? Laziness, pretentiousness, rudeness. Funniest moment during filming? When Kojo couldn’t sit down in his skinny jeans. She’s The One airs on SABC 3 Thursday nights at 7:30pm

photography: supplied.

As host of She’s The One, model and actor, Lunga has the opportunity to get to know the contestants on a more personal level
