In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” – and learning begins early. For starters, children learn a great deal through play and age-appropriate toys can make all the difference. Unfortunately not all children have great toys and to remedy this, Cotlands, a non-profit community development organisation, has set up six toy libraries across the country where, for a small membership fee, children can borrow toys for up to two weeks. The staff also runs play groups and monitors children to make sure that they are developing in a healthy but fun way during their early years. If you would like to help in any way, email info@ cotlands.org.za or call 011 683 7200, 021 852 3527 or 035 838 1948.

fashion spotlight She may only be seven, but Suri Cruise has a wardrobe worth more than your house. There are blogs devoted to Tom Cruise’s daughter’s style – she’s even made a best-dressed list or two – and according to mom Katie Holmes, the fashion-icon-intraining has her own ideas when it comes to what she wears. “I do not dress her,” says Katie. “I buy her clothes, but she is the one who puts her outfits together.” 92 april 2013

kids teenagers

Teenagers are designed to test and try the ties that bind. But, says Paul Kerton, with a little diplomatic parenting these ties will snap back like bungee cords instead of merely snapping

’ve just read a survey stating that 13-yearolds provide the biggest challenge to parents when bringing up a child, even beating the first year of a baby’s life. I disagree. The thing I like about teenagers is that they have a voice, a brain and a sense of humour. And, hey, some can even rationalise. They may be moody and often self-obsessed as they begin to sort out their role in life but all in all they can be good fun. They are faced with the cruel pressures of exams and selecting a career path at an age when all they want to do is attend to their looks, play music and go out and have a good time. As hormones rage, teenagers are confronted with a new set of personal problems. Skin is a huge issue. Girls tend to disappear with moms for ‘girly chats’ and boys… well, they just disappear, shocked no doubt by their sudden recognition that the opposite sex is no longer a pain but actually quite interesting. Never has there been so many ways to communicate with and befriend one another. Clearly this comes at a price and can be abused as various horror stories confirm – texting and sexting scandals, cyberbullying, dodgy men grooming innocent children – prompting some parents to secretly read their teenagers’ emails and texts. I think that that’s going too far but I am all for restricting access at

122 april 2013

The thing I like about teenagers is that they have a voice, a brain and a sense of humour certain times, like 3am. And then there is the issue of sexualisation, particularly of girls, when confronted with pop-star fashions and promotional videos that seem to have plunged street fashion to a new depth. (If my daughter’s shorts get any shorter it’ll be a belt.) Nevertheless, unless your parenting technique is completely off the chart, we must trust in our children’s judgment and sense of responsibility, affording them the benefit of the doubt. South African children are, by necessity, cosseted enough without being spied on too. Dangers will always abound, especially once they go travelling. When I was 16 I wanted to spend the summer hitchhiking around Europe with a friend. “No way,” said my parents. “If you don’t let me go I’ll die,” said I. Mom

agreed if I promised to wear a vest and change my socks and underpants regularly. Seven weeks later I returned home wearing spotlessly clean clothes, having hitch-hiked down to the tip of Greece and back. I didn’t mention the lost passport in Munich, the nude beach on Kos and the brush with the law in Zagreb. My point is that teenagers have to make their own mistakes and that we can’t be there to chaperone them 24/7. Drinking is my major concern and so an article I read in Psychology Today struck a chord. It urged parents to ‘teach your children to drink [alcohol] before somebody else does’. I’m a firm believer in the civilised European habit of letting children have the occasional small glass of wine with a family meal rather than wait until they are on their own, faced with a line of shots at a friend’s birthday party and getting completely legless. What is sad, though, is the way teenagers shut out their parents during adolescence and appear tetchy, moody and impatient in their company when in reality, any loving parent has a lot to offer in terms of advice, experience and emotional support. The good news is that the rebellious phase fades in their late teens as they re-evaluate that relationship and return to the fold – only to start nagging you for the car keys.
