animal print – in particular leopard – might be taking centre stage this season, but fashion has always been obsessed with the call of the wild…

skin – symbolic not only of her rank but also the magnificence of the ancient egyptian nation. the 1559 coronation robe of Queen elizabeth I was heavily trimmed with spotted ermine – a fur restricted at the time to royalty and high nobility. dancer, civil rights activist and the world’s first black sex symbol, Josephine baker, was renowned for walking the streets of paris with her pet cheetah, chiquita – a potent vision of empowerment, exhibitionism and danger. Known for being ahead of the fashion pack by opting for exotic feathers over furs, one of baker’s favourite lbFds (little black flapper dresses) was covered in genuine peacock plumes, a print that was all the rage in the 1920s. enter the glamour goddesses of the ‘50s: marilyn monroe, rita hayworth, ava gardner, sophia loren and elizabeth taylor, who all shared a predilection for wild cat print in the form of hats, cuffs, collars, full-length coats and even (real fur) bikinis. these were women who not only represented the ultimate ideals of beauty, but also a post-war world where females – albeit movie stars – could be independently wealthy, powerful and in charge of their own sexuality. they celebrated this elevated position in society by wearing the ultimate status symbol: animal pelts such as leopard, cheetah and ocelot. the starlets’ uniform of choice ignited a global fashion craze, an unfortunate

What connection could there possibly be between an ancient egyptian ruler, a medieval ‘Virgin Queen’, an exotic dancer who defied the racial boundaries of her time, an iconic blonde bombshell and legendary lavender-eyed actress, an androgynous disco singer, an edgy british supermodel, a formidable magazine editor and the new generation of avantgarde pop stars? all are members of a fiercely powerful, high-profile tribe of women who, over the decades, has each offered her own assured vision of how to wear animal print. It goes without saying that animal print in its most primitive form – fur – was first worn for the practical benefits: coverage, protection and warmth. but it was when clothing crossed the prehistoric boundary from being merely functional to conveying cultural and political status, wealth and later, sexual liberation and fashion savvy, that patterned animal skin as well as, to a lesser extent, feathers and reptile leathers, became the inspiration for so many of the world’s most fascinating female protagonists. take cleopatra for example, who is often depicted in art history dressed in, as well as lounging on, leopard

Jones owned the late ‘70s and ‘80s with her sexually overt feline energy that earned her the nickname ‘the black panther’; a beguiling ‘man-eater’ who was controversially photographed in a tiger cage by French artist Jean-paul goude and whose signature catsuits in leopard and tiger print expressed a fetishised femininity that has been emulated by everyone from madonna and rihanna to lady gaga and Nicki minaj. ever defiant of convention, in 2009 she appeared on stage in New York wearing an eiko Ishioka-designed zebra-print catsuit. as one does if you’re grace Jones at the age of 61. animal print also seems to be a prerequisite for membership of

The call of the wild You needn’t be a wildlife connoisseur or wilderness veteran to appreciate the humbling majesty of being on safari – you simply need to open your heart

My heart is thumping against my chest. I’m flushed with awe and exhilaration, gripped by a rush of emotions covering the spectrum from enchantment to panic. She’s close enough for me to make out the individual hairs in her dark lashes, to trace the deep grooves and furrows in her wrinkled skin, and study her drooping undercarriage, dripping off her like leather saddlebags. I can feel the breeze generated by the flapping of her ears as her trunk disturbs the dust at her feet. It’s spellbinding. Caught in the gentle stare of this ancient matriarch, I experience time standing still and feel a primordial connection. club 00 edgarsclub.co.za

“A safari is not about ticking off checklists so much as bearing witness to life” For many, a wildlife safari is a kind of interactive David Attenboroughnarrated documentary experienced in sophisticated 3D, enlivened by the bump and grind of a 4X4 that navigates through a bushveld with the promise of bumping into creatures that can fill us with delight. Of course not every safari encounter is gentle or languid. Some moments are presaged by elaborate tracking, or predicated on luck, others feels like a chase and can get the blood racing. Some animals are skittish. We forget, while purposefully searching for the Big Five, that in their world, there’s a ceaseless game of life and death. I’ve experienced the panic and terror of a galloping zebra whizzing past our vehicle, anxious to escape a lion, hot on its heels. That happened almost two decades ago, yet I still recall how that zebra’s adrenaline-fuelled getaway quickened my own pulse. Witnessing such breathtaking events is manna for the soul, but so too are simple glimpses of birds fanning their wings, or the microscopic activities of insects doing their bit to keep this mysteriously-ordered chaos in check. For me, a safari is not about ticking off checklists of crucial sightings so much as bearing witness to life in all its diversity. The sheer grace of a giraffe’s long-legged lope is as curious as watching springbok pronking through the veld or monkeys swinging through the canopy. There’s as much beauty watching warthogs snuffling

in the grass as there is listening to the clown-like guffaws of wallowing hippos. And it’s as chilling to hear the maniacal laughter of hyenas cutting through the night as it is catching sight of submerged crocodiles waiting to ambush unsuspecting antelope near the river’s edge. Time out here hones my senses, putting me back in touch with an unseen world. The whiff of fresh dung, the sudden alertness of a rhino as its twitching ears pick up slivers of sound, the tension in an impala’s muscles as it braces to flee from whatever’s skulking in the nearby bush. The wild also allows for quiet contemplation. It’s a blank canvas, a space that can jolt you into consciousness. On walking safaris, especially, I’ve become aware of ‘tuning in’ to the world around me so there’s a more direct engagement with what’s out there. Our connection with wilderness, I believe, is built into our DNA. Our ancestors communed with wild animals and that relationship is part of our birthright, even if we have dispensed with it in favour of civilisation. Perhaps part of the sad beauty of any safari experience nowadays is the knowledge that you’re in a fastdisappearing world. The rate of species extinction is unprecedented. It’s another reason African game safaris are so precious, why they should be embarked upon and cherished. We’re blessed to live in a part of the world where such encounters are still possible, where the fight to protect our natural heritage is a battle still being waged rather than a long-forgotten lost cause. More than mere emotional escapism, a safari is a state of being. It has the power to rewire the brain’s circuits, reconfigure reality and deepen our understanding of life itself. Because when a wise old elephant gazes into your eyes, what you see as you stare back is really some wondrous proof that there’s something beyond human intelligence at work in this universe.

graphic designer and one direction super Fan Ziyaad gives us the inside track on handling the concert like a pro Biggest concert faux pas? as a faithful directioner, spelling the boys’ names wrong is very embarrassing, so make sure the banner you’re happily waving around doesn’t say, “Please marrY me liYam”. another big mishap? singing the wrong lyrics. don’t come near the golden circle and “accidentally” sing a vamps song halfway through Harry belting out You & I. the ultimate outfit to wear to a one direction concert? take your cue from the boys’ style and keep it casual with on-trend accessories – think black skinny jeans, a white tee worn under a denim shirt or checked flannel. better yet, rock a statement slogan tee and tie the shirt around your waist. Whatever style you adopt, just remember to keep all your valuables close to you and in a safe spot. What is your strategy for getting close to the stage? as with any concert, the key is to get there early, even if that means camping out a few days before. once inside the venue, scramble as close to the front as possible. this is the moment you’ve been dreaming about when zayn locks eyes on you as the sweet lyrics of One Thing fill the space between you two. You manage to get backstage – what is the first thing you say to Harry? i would firstly die! and then, once i had been brought back to life, i would compose myself and try to act as natural as possible. the question i would ask him is, “may i please raid your closet?” How do you plan on documenting the concert? Pictures, pictures and more pictures. Plus, i’m saving my ticket stub and will most probably have a special t-shirt with the boys’ faces on it.

Melanie talks to us about hitting the concert alongside her excited daughter What was your daughter’s reaction when she heard one direction was coming to SA? excited hops up and down and the occasional scream. the one direction cd was put on repeat shortly after this. Who is your daughter’s favourite band member? louis tomlinson. What’s in your daughter’s poster-making kit and what is your poster PoA? the poster-making kit is still being compiled as she’s been too busy counting down the days on her calendar until the new one direction cd and dvd are released. that said, i have started stocking up on a1 size cardboard, glitter pens and plenty of colourful crayons. i imagine my daughter will also be paging through magazines in search of pictures of the boys that she can add to her poster. my advice to parents is to buy in bulk! Your daughter asks you to hang back at the concert because you’re making her look uncool in front of her friends. do you act like the laid-back mother and back off or ignore her and carry on singing to your favourite 1d tune? i would probably back off but after five minutes i wouldn’t be able to stop myself from quietly singing along to the songs before getting louder and having her tell me to back off again. i think the safest bet is not to sing along or, if you must, make sure to do so out of earshot of your daughter and her friends. How do you plan to deal with the emotional aftermath when they leave cape town? i plan on creating a digital photo album of the concert with lots of pictures of her and her friends. concert keepsakes are always a good idea.
