in the morning summertime’ was a ditty my grandfather delighted in belting out at the doors of his slumbering grandchildren at ungodly hours of the morning. Summer holiday days from toddler to teen and beyond began with his impish call to get up and outdoors. We’re lucky to live on the right side of the equator for sunshine so a season of tropical prints, surfer chic and sunset brights suits our sensibilities just fine. Turn to ‘Shadow Play’ on page 40 for a look at the evolution of tropical prints – think palms in silhouette at sunset – and ‘Style tribe’ on page 22 for the little version. ‘Top to toe’ on page 48 and ‘In the light of day’ on page 60 will give you head-to-toe guidelines for how to be beach ready (and sun safe). Our feature ‘Boardwalk Empire’ is a fun read on the rise of surfer cool and how to gain ‘membership to an exclusive tribe; all without so much as having to get your feet wet’. We took the idea of destination beyond downtime and looked into the Africafacing fashion industry in ‘Afro-sheen’ and followed one woman’s journey to live her passion in ‘The Soloist’ on page 68. As ever, there are fantastic deals and competitions just for you throughout the issue. Visit edgarsclub.co.za for more great reads and benefits. To summer days,

The trend – as all trends do – also rode a wave down to the high street, and was seen everywhere from Topshop with their eye-searingly bright ‘Acid Surf’ TopMan collection to iconic counterculture footwear maker Dr. Martens, who collaborated on a S/S 2014 shoe and clothing collection with model Agyness Deyn that merged ‘70s California surfer

ou don’t have to be a trend forecaster to have noticed the growing swell of designers looking to surf culture for inspiration. As usual, it was Kaiser Karl (Lagerfeld) leading the posse, doing it first back in 2010 by appropriating the ultimate symbol of this cult sport and putting a luxe twist on things by releasing Chanel logo-emblazoned surfboards. Marc Jacobs followed suit in 2011, as did Italian fashion house, Etro, who transplanted their signature paisley prints onto a range of beautiful boards. Louis Vuitton, to demonstrate that the brand was ‘down’ with surfer culture, launched the 2012 opening of their Sydney flagship store by placing impossibly sleek, monogrammed surfboards in its store windows. That year also saw a surge of aqua-influenced fashion: Stella McCartney’s ‘Swim Wetsuit’ for Adidas became the beachwear of the season, while Luella Bartley, Donna Karan and Michael Kors all presented collections featuring neoprene, colour blocking, scuba style bodycon dresses, oversized zippers and From boho hippie to garage band grunge, the influence of wetsuit-like tailoring, with secret. What to watch high fashion brands at this particular moment? Since the ‘70s, surfers and skaters have represented the ultimate in counterculture rebels: stellar surfing icons like Duke Kahanamoku, Laird Hamilton, Rob Machado and Kelly Slater, the scene’s music and films, and street savvy brands like O’Neill, Quicksilver, Billabong and Ripcurl (which were started by surfers, for surfers, long before the pursuit became mainstream) are all symbolic of a

countercultures on high fashion is no its easy, breezy, go-with-the-flow attitude romanticised edginess with a strong undercurrent of effortless cool. For luxury brands to stay relevant – especially in a retail landscape where youth-focused chains like Topshop are significant competitors for the fashion dollar – they need to be seen as continually evolving, offering consumers a re-contextualised urban aesthetic that, in the case of surfer chic, promises membership to an exclusive tribe; all without so much as having to get your feet wet. But more than that, it’s the lifestyle: the notion of the endless summer, global travel, dressing down and communing with nature. In these high-tech, high-stress times when we all seem to be sending out an SOS for a more lo-fi way of being, a hit of California dreaming sounds like just what the style doctor ordered.

For a lunch-time work meeting… Slim-line clamdigger shorts, understated but sparkly T-shirt, tailored blazer and rope wedges (score higher marks if you colour-block) For a hot date… A bold midriff-baring top with a pretty maxi skirt and straight-off-the-beach curls

The accidental tourist

Three urbanites take us on an insider’s tour of their respective cities sharing their must-visit hangouts. For a unique local experience, read on…

JOBURG Writer and editor Zodwa Kumalo-Valentine shares the places she goes to escape the bustle of city life My family and I consider ourselves quite nomadic and thrive on moving from place to place. After living in Cape Town for two years, we moved back to Joburg and have been reacquainting ourselves with the city. clockwise from left joburg city; andersons nursery and coffee shop; rhino and lion park; orbit live music & bistro; down to earth farm feasts

For breakfast, we love Anderson’s Nursery and Coffee Shop in Norwood. It has a little bakery with the most delightful cakes and doughnuts and there is a supervised art room where the kids can paint. For a budget-friendly activity, James and Ethel Grey Park is one of the city’s hidden gems. Tucked away in Melrose, this little green lung is the perfect place for a Sunday stroll. Walking here on the weekend while watching my husband teach our daughter to ride her bike feels like one of those whitepicket-fence moments. For date night or drinks with friends, we often visit The Orbit Live Music & Bistro. Located in the hip and recently restored area of Braamfontein, this bar

club 70 edgarsclub.co.za

has really marked the rebirth of live jazz in the city. Alongside the incredible music, the hearty food and wine make it feel like a second home. A restaurant that got us really excited was Chinese Northern Foods in Cyrildene. It’s unbelievable value for money – just R30 for a plate of deliciously perfect dumplings – and has some of the best Chinese food I have ever tasted. Just don’t expect excellent service or a waiter who speaks English. When we need a break from the city, Dullstroom is the ultimate retreat and only a three-hour drive from Joburg. With its breathtaking views, pretty walks, antique shops and great breakfast spots, it’s the perfect weekend getaway. As soon as we arrive I feel I am able to exhale and not feel guilty about doing absolutely nothing. An unexpected but wonderful place to take your children is the Rhino and Lion Park an hour out of the city. You can visit the lion cubs or head off on a self-drive around the reserve. It’s a great way to unwind and see most of the Big Five without having to commit to an expensive getaway. Next up, I can’t wait to try Down To Earth pop-up farm feasts. They’ve given the concept of the pop-up restaurant an unique spin, hosting monthly dinners at farms in Gauteng. The chef creates an original menu using seasonal produce and then cooks up a feast in an old Mercedes-Benz army truck that’s been turned into a mobile kitchen.

Japanese garden with amazing bridges, statues and walkways lined with indigenous and exotic plants. You can even organise a picnic through the lodge and find a little corner of the garden to enjoy it.

DURBAN Designer and food enthusiast Greg Roche gives us his definitive guide to a weekend in and around the city There are the obvious reasons why Durban is such an amazing place to live like the warm water and endless summer, but the city is so much more than that. We’re a small, laidback community but you just need to take a walk down Florida Road or pop into one of the many markets to experience the crazy levels of energy and creativity flowing out of this city. My favourite spot for a bite to eat is Chuck & Bob’s in in the super trendy suburb of Morningside. All of the dishes centre around their mouthwatering charcuterie and their pastrami is as close as it gets to the famous Katz Deli in New York, perhaps even better. The best time to go is on Thursdays when they have tapas night. It’s got a very laid-back atmosphere and it’s the perfect place to relax after a long week. When I need a bit of a breather, my wife and I make the 30-minute trip to Makaranga Lodge for a quiet pizza. The hotel is Book today set in beautiful Summer is the perfect time to explore botanical gardens South Africa’s most exciting cities. Whether so it’s incredibly you’re looking to experience a breezy Cape tranquil. After Town summer, a tropical getaway in Durban your meal head or the vibrant city atmosphere of Joburg, off for a wander the Edgars Club Travel Desk can help you put a trip together at a great price from the through the grounds and visit plane tickets to your hotel booking. Call 0872 85 35 97 (from SA), their spectacular +27 87 285 3597 (from outside SA) or email edgars@traveldesk.za.com to book.

On the weekends, we escape to Shongweni Dam in the Shongweni Nature Reserve. The best part is it’s only 40 minutes from Durban but it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere. The dam is surrounded by sandstone cliffs and beautiful trails through the forest so we often go for a walk with friends before sitting down at the water’s edge to enjoy a good old-fashioned braai. Saturdays are all about stocking up on fresh produce. We always stop off at the Shongweni Farmers Market for some strawberries and freshly baked bread, but you have to get there early as it fills up quite fast. On top of the artisan food, they also have locally made crafts like ceramics and leatherwork. Then it’s onto Glenwood Bakery for some pastries. We occasionally end off the trip with a visit to the KZN Gallery, which always has a good exhibition on of contemporary South African art. My ultimate dinner spot would have to be Bite Your Tongue in Durban North. It’s an unassuming little sushi place but the main reason I go is for the hot beef noodle soup. This is as close as it gets to street food in Mainland China and the noodles are handmade. Be a tourist for a day and head to the Moses Mabhida stadium. Daredevils can try The Big Rush Big Swing (a pendulum swing across the middle of the stadium) or you can opt for a 550-step walk over the top of the arch and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Durban and the Indian Ocean.

About three times a week I make my way here either at sunrise or after work and leave the city behind. There’s also an abandoned building up there and sometimes I like to take a picnic and sit on the roof, looking down on the Mother City. It’s good for my soul and these reflective moments alone are some of my favourite.

Tech expert Zac Rusagara gives us a glimpse into his love affair with Cape Town, sharing a few of his secret spots and favourite activities Cape Town is like a woman. From the people to the weather, she’s unpredictable but beautiful, and just when you think you’ve learnt all there is to know, she totally surprises you. It’s so easy to fall in love with this city and there’s so much to discover, you just need to be open to the idea, even if it means venturing off alone. The ultimate breakfast spot for me is Tamboerswinkel on Kloof Street. The owner sources the highest quality ingredients from local farms and is there from four in the morning baking fresh bread and croissants. The food is consistently good and I always order the scrambled egg on a perfectly crisped croissant with a side of bacon. You can find the perfect coffee at Nap in the Cape Quarter. Everyone knows this place for the interior accessories and little knickknacks, but they also have mind-blowing coffee. Another great place to get your caffeine fix is House of Machines on Shortmarket Street in the city centre. This hip biker-themed coffee shop and bar is totally unique and roasts some of the best beans in town. To disconnect from city life, I go for a trail run on Lion’s Head. There’s a secret track that winds around the mountain, which no one really notices.

club 72 edgarsclub.co.za

Most people don’t know about it, but you can actually do an underground tunnel tour in Cape Town that starts at the Good Hope Castle and finishes in Gardens. These underground canals were built in 1652 and were used to transport the fresh water running off Table Mountain around the city. It’s such an incredible experience and you learn so much about the city, I would encourage everyone to do it. I love to hang out in Observatory and Woodstock. People have been saying that they’re cool neighbourhoods for years but now they’re really coming into their own. The vibe is so eclectic and funky and it’s great to see how much care and effort developers are putting into rejuvenating the areas.

A really unique place to visit is the iZiko Planetarium next to the Company Gardens in town. On a Saturday and Sunday, they do a show called ‘The Sky Tonight’, where they recreate a clear night sky dotted with stars. It’s quite brilliant and it’s an unexpected place to escape to in the heart of the city. The other day I took a girl on a date there and I think she was pretty blown away.
