ed’s letter

Thinking back on Italy, I’d expect to be hit with an image of the Colosseum, but I’m remembering detailed fragments – the most beautiful bed linen, a bookstand in a kitchen holding a half-read Italian novel, looking at frescoes on my bedroom wall that my host had discovered by chance, the unsentimental speed at which (perfect) coffee was taken standing at a crowded local espresso bar, a flash of a woman’s elegant glove… that such specialness is ordinary still fills me with wonder and wanderlust. Read ‘A Beautiful Life’ on page 28 for a better understanding of this artful way of living and turn to ‘La Vita è Bella’ and ‘Little Italy’ on pages 34 and 16 and ‘Ciao, bella’ on page 58 for the fashion and beauty buys from Edgars to get you into the spirit. ‘When in Rome’ on page 70 will have you wanting to put them all into a suitcase and head off – there are some great offers from the Travel Desk to get you there. Read about knitwear aficionado Laduma Ngxokolo’s foray into high fashion at Italy’s premier menswear event – on page 26 and the style secrets of bella South African women on page 34. We’ve had our MAN editor give you the scoop on Italy’s finest films and asked Mr Doveton how to dress with respect without ironing your underwear. As ever, there are great benefits for Club members throughout the issue. Be sure to visit edgarsclub.co.za for more. Take care,

The Italian way

Of all the things Italians have contributed to our world, some of the best are edible. Here are Club’s tips for making coffee, gelato and pasta that would make an Italian mama proud

Making your own means you are in control of what goes into it and you can experiment with fresh ingredients and exotic flavours. TOP TIPS Use fresh ingredients like vanilla pods, mint leaves and best quality chocolate. Use full cream. If your ice cream is milk- rather than cream-based, it will turn out more ‘icy’. Invest in an ice cream machine. Ice cream must be mixed or agitated during the freezing process to prevent large ice crystals forming. Without an ice cream machine, this means stirring every 30 minutes. An alternative method is to place a small bowl containing your ice cream mix inside a large stock pot filled with ice and rock salt – adding salt to ice lowers the freezing point so it aerates and chills as you whisk. Pop the nested bowls in the freezer for 45 minutes then repeat this step. The Krups ice cream maker’s double insulated bowl performs this step for you. For serving, an ice cream scoop is essential for getting those perfect round balls of deliciousness.

Knowledge about and demand for artisan coffee is evident in SA, and with this specialist kit you can bring barista skills into your home. TOP TIPS Buy fresh beans. If possible, source them from a local roaster. Keep beans at room temperature. Never refrigerate them because roasted beans are porous. Use good water. If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, use bottled spring water. Using fresh filtered water will also prolong the life of your machine. Brew within 30 minutes of grinding. Coffee starts to lose quality once it is ground. Get the ratio right. To make 500ml (two big cups) you need five level tablespoons (or 28g) of ground coffee and 500ml of water. Temperature is important. The optimum temperature is 93ºC (about 45 seconds before it reaches a full boil). Keep your kit clean. If using a coffee machine, prime the machine first by running hot water through to break down oils and leftover grounds. Remember to also keep your brew basket clean. Rinsing with hot water is sufficient day-to-day but consult your manual for specific cleaning instructions.

Fashionable foodies The visual appeal of food makes for inspiring blogging

zac posen

Take Sunday Times Fashion Weekly Editor Roxanne Robinson’s Instagram account, @lucycant_dance. It was termed by the Mail & Guardian a ‘foodie-fashionista dream’. She photographs meals she is enjoying at arbitrary restaurants, captions some as ‘Family lunch, whining and wining done good’ and then peppers her posts with indulgent custommade knitwear. There’s a smorgasbord of clothing coverage that ranges from fashion weeks in New York and Milan to street-style gear on gastrochic. com. This is paired with a foodie focus and recipes, some of which are thrown together from whatever’s in the fridge, while others are more fashion-related – like the ‘Fashion Week Omelet’, meant to offer fuel for fashionistas doing the run-around during shows. In thespicystiletto.com food and lifestyle blogger Serena Goh shares her personal style. Viewers watch her life of good living as she enjoys delicate meals along the way, set against off-white backgrounds. Sisters Danielle and Laura Kosann founded thenewpotato.com which they term a ‘food, fashion and lifestyle destination’. Here you’ll find everything from where to eat when you visit Soho to which celebs are leaving a good taste in the mouth, as well as recipes to cover your entire day – from breakfast to cocktails – and videos of the stuff in between.

Food has become fashionable. It’s evident in the many local and even more international magazines taking up space on the newsstand. Cover models now include a slow roast, a hearty soup, focaccia with fresh toppings or a delectable dessert. That entire careers are carved from food styling, with tips and tricks littering the internet, is testament to the trend. On her Instagram profile, Taste of Runway’s Anna Marconi (@tasteofrunway) describes her version of the food and fashion marriage as “a story of happiness, between an outfit and a recipe”. Her perspective of this partnership is quite literal. She has managed to merge her love of food and knowledge of fashion on tasteofrunway.com, which looks at colours and clothing cuts on catwalks and culminates in cuisine inspiration. She says all her recipes share a common denominator – beauty. With other fashion and food bloggers the interpretation is a little less literal. Marconi looks to fashion to inspire how her food looks. Most other bloggers, including some based in South Africa, have become adept at taking snaps and covering events they’ve attended where either the food or the fashion was the highlight. And they use their popular social media platforms as an online exhibition.

OFFER club

Perfectly

Look the part with this exclusive offer from Sunglass Hut at Edgars, especially for Club members

There’s no doubt that sunglasses have become the ultimate accessory. Any fashion maven will tell you that no outfit is complete without a stylish pair of frames perched on your nose. But sunglasses are not merely chic fashion extras: they’re essential to protect your eyes and skin, so you need to pick your pair (or pairs!) well. Here’s a fail-safe ‘how-tochoose’ guide, courtesy of Sunglass Hut at Edgars.

SHAPE UP

The first step in acquiring the right pair of sunglasses is to know which frames are best suited to the shape of your face. If you have a square-shaped face, curvier frames will provide a subtle balance, while ovalshaped faces are accentuated by rectangular sunglasses. Frames with geometric designs and angular settings can offset the gentle contours of a more rounded face.

GET POLAR POWER

Polarised lenses are designed to cut the harsh glare produced by the sun and to protect your eyes. With great colour, exceptional clarity and unparalleled detail, wearing polarised lenses is like seeing the world in HD.

Save on shades!

BE FASHION CONSCIOUS

Club members receive 25% of their purchase back on a gift card.

STAY ON-TREND

Sunglass Hut is offering Edgars shoppers the chance to share the gift of stylish sunglasses with an exclusive gift card promotion from 14 September to 3 October 2015: • Purchase sunglasses over R1 000 to receive a free Sunglass Hut at Edgars gift card. • Non Club members receive 20% of their purchase back on the gift card. • The more you spend, the higher your gift card value will be.

Top fashion designers are increasingly incorporating sunglasses design into their collections. From the catwalk to the street, frames have become a priority as fashionistas plan head-turning outfits around bold frames. Choosing a pair of sunnies can mean walking a fine line between sticking to your usual safe choice and daring to be different. With the enormous range of fashionable frames on offer, you can strike that balance between your signature style and a fresh, new look.

Close shave

Nothing exudes Italian refinement quite like a classic barbershop shave. Follow these four steps by fourth generation barber and Cape Town-based grooming expert Yogesh Yogi Govan to help you get that special occasion smoothness

Be picky about your razors if your skin is prone to acne, Avoid razors with lubricant strips as The ingredients may exacerbate rashes and redness.

Shave in the right direction If you’re susceptible to ingrown hairs, shave against the grain, and if your skin is particularly sensitive shave with the grain.

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

STEP 4

Place a warm towel on your face to open pores and soften the facial hair before wetting your face and applying a pre-shave solution (for your skin type or concern). Use a shaving brush to avoid the product ending up between your fingers.

Layer on a generous amount of shaving cream using a boar shaving brush. The bristles are firmer, which provides the double benefit of exfoliating your skin and lifting the hairs so you can achieve a closer shave.

Take your time using a doubleedge blade as it allows you to get as close to the root of the hair as possible. Cartridge blades, although great for everyday use, don’t offer the smoothest shave if your stubble is too short.

To end, massage into your skin a pea-size amount of aftershave balm or lotion specific to your most pressing skin concern – whether that happens to be acne, dryness, redness, irritation or ingrown hairs.

man reader’s experience

Publicist and man of style Bongani Gxekwa embraces his first personal shopping experience at TOPMAN For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved clothes. Whether my mom could afford to buy them for me or not when I was young, that love never faded away. I used to enjoy going to the shopping mall but as time went by, the trips became less exciting; mom would take hours looking for what she needed and ended up not buying anything. That resulted in me disliking going to the malls, let alone going to clothing stores. I think a lot of guys who have experienced this would agree with me, right? The whole shopping experience was never about me. Even if it was, my feelings were never considered and I just had to wear whatever was bought. Fast-forward to a time when I can afford to buy my own clothes and decide what to buy – problem is I just don’t have the time. On the rare occasions I do, it’s just in and out of shops, a quick look at what a store has and I’m out of there. The thought of having my own personal shopper wasn’t on my radar until I walked into TOPMAN. “Hi, my name is Nadine and I’ll be your personal shopper today. Tell me a little bit about your background – what is it that you do?” the assistant asked. I admit that at first I was unsure of the whole experience of having a personal shopper, but she nailed it with the items she pulled out after I’d answered some of her questions. As a guy who works in PR and sometimes has to head straight to an event from the office, I like to keep things simple – pants, shirt, jacket and smart casual shoes are my thing. The look is clean and appropriate for any occasion. Based on this, I wasn’t ready for what she had picked out for me. I was blown away by the texture of the fabric and when I tried the garments on, I thought to myself, wow. The

tweed pants fitted well and the colour combination of the pants with the shirt and man poncho was perfect – blue, green and a touch of tan. “Men are still conservative when it comes to playing with colours,” Nadine told me. “What’s important is for you to know your skin tone and what colours go well with it.” That said, we decided to try another look. We went for greenprint pants, a white slim-fit shirt with a grey, textured, slim collar and a jacket in light guava – suddenly I knew what she meant. I don’t think I would have thought of putting those colours together but I enjoyed playing around with them. By the way other shoppers looked at us, I’m sure they were thinking, “This person must be a celebrity” (I would have thought the same). It was as if Nadine had read my mind and said, “People tend to think that having a personal shopper is expensive. Well, it may be, but here at TOPMAN it’s free. All I need to do is have coffee with someone to find out about them and we’re good to go for the first fittings. After that, I’ll know exactly what you need to have in your wardrobe.” By the time we were finished I felt even more confident. I realised that I finally understood the term ‘retail therapy’. My mood had changed after the experience – I felt on top of the world. I’ll definitely go back to TOPMAN, not just for the amazing clothes but also for the fab experience with my personal shopper.
