LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT John Cannon

Welcome to the 2nd Edition of Live Well With the launch of our magazine Live Well last year, Phillipa and I had no idea that the magazine would be so warmly and enthusiastically embraced by potential customers, current clients, Realtors and trade partners.

You’ve told us it has helped with decisions about trends and traditions and

you’ve enjoyed being introduced to the luxury homes we build on the water and in the area’s finest gated communities. Moreover, we appreciated learning that we’ve helped you choose the community or neighborhood that was right for you and your family. Thank you!

This is our 29th year building custom luxury homes, and we continue to be

honored with accolades, such as: - 1st place 2016 Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s “Best Builder” Reader’s Choice Award, for Sarasota and Manatee counties, our 24th consecutive year with this distinction; - This year’s 2016 Parade of Homes, presented by the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association, the most recognized home builder sweeping the competition with 22 awards including four in the “Best Overall” category.

The Akarra III, recognized for Best Architectural Detail, Best Floor Plan, Best

Kitchen and Best Master Suite is featured in this edition, along with three new exquisite John Cannon models. We’ve expanded our section on the “Homes We Love” while “Be Our Guest!” offers a peek at what makes a guest room special.

Thank you for making John Cannon Homes the waterfront builder of choice

with over 370 custom homes on the water, and for another successful year building in southwest Florida’s most sought-after neighborhoods and communities. Warmest regards,

John Cannon President and CEO The John Cannon Homes Lifestyle Magazine

THE DESIGN CENTER Trends in 2016-17

The New John Cannon Homes Design Center: Turning Design Ideas into Reality Opposite: Outdoor selections for your home that you can see, touch and feel. This page: Clients can meet with designers at comfortable work stations to choose from a variety of products.

With design trends continually evolving, the newly renovated John Cannon Homes Design Center offers an even wider selection of products for homeowners and prospective clients to consider when designing their custom home. Encompassing nearly 4,000 square feet, it is located at the John Cannon Homes Corporate Office Building in Lakewood Ranch. And the selection is extensive:

From a wide variety of roof tiles, both flat and barrel, and over 50 selections of cultured stone and pavers, to the most opulent designs in flooring including stone and wood; Luxurious bath fixtures by Kohler and Moen and stunning tiles, sinks and porcelains; Over 100 choices 8

Some of the trends: Easy, edgy,

comfortable living is today’s vibe; Overall “luxe minimalism” and “transitional” focus on clean lines and simplicity. Natural elements are mixed with contemporary materials. Wood, steel and glass are popular combinations; Organic influences combine with old-world and classic elements. Distinctive tile details are the new standard in bathrooms and kitchen. Work zones rather than the traditional “triangle” design with storage and entertaining are top priorities and driving kitchen layout. Get-away rooms for relaxation and family time are here to stay, and baths continue to evolve into spa-like retreats: Large dramatic freestanding tubs act like works of art or sculpture taking center stage. In addition, a classic, traditional study situated at the front of the home offers space for a contemplative retreat or home office. A signature style of John Cannon and a feature in all of his custom home models is the integration of the Florida outdoor lifestyle with the rest of the home. The Akarra III does not disappoint. It’s no wonder that The Akarra III was an honored award-winning model in this year’s Parade of Homes. Walnut finished double entry doors bring you into a grand foyer open to the second level of the home, and your eyes are drawn to the dramatic intricate ceiling details, the stunning natural materials, the graceful flow and the harmony of light and space. Calm seaside colors have been chosen to enhance the visual appeal of stone and deep woods that make The Mindera appealing to both families and empty nesters alike. While the home’s great room features sweeping vistas of the waterfront and preserve, it’s the stained birch beams in the tray ceiling paired with the harmonious use of dry stacked Shellstone, which wraps the fireplace, and deep maple naturally-aged wood flooring that adds to the “wow” factor of the home. And when the room’s disappearing glass wall is tucked away, connecting you with the pool, spa and lanai, you will marvel at the unique and inviting design.

One of the keys to The Mindera’s sophisticated design is the sense of massing and proportion, an element of symmetry which maintains balance and harmony, a signature element found in every John Cannon Home. Just off the great room is a innovative and inviting oversized kitchen, its openness enhanced by the sky-blue ceiling treatment at the kitchens barrel ceiling. While culinary creativity will be inspired by the stateof-the-art stainless steel appliances, the pairing of the antique white-painted maple cabinetry and rustic knotty alder at the island will also impress. With its around the island seating, separate dining area and comfortable, creative lighting, this is an all-around functional, versatile kitchen where you will be at home entertaining guests, enjoying fun family game nights or managing after school projects. A Fresh Take on a Classic

M

ike and Erin Moser relocated to Sarasota from Naples in 1997. Having spent time in Panama City, FL, the couple fell in love

with the “Plantation style” home design. “Balconies across the front of the house, black shutters around the windows, two stories – that’s what we wanted for our first custom home that is located on a canal with access to the gulf,” Erin said. Organized chaos best describes their family that includes four children, and at this time, an exchange student, two dogs, plenty of pet fish and a hedgehog. They wanted their custom home to fit their fun, active

ohn Cannon and the design team fulfilled their requirements with a 3-story, 6-bedroom, 5-bath, 4,685 SF home with

3-car garage at the first level, complete with plenty of storage areas and two living levels. Crisp, pure white Hardie Board siding paired with traditional 2-panel double entry doors and shutters painted black make the home’s exterior a perfect backdrop for Erin’s festive Americana decorations. defined as Southern classic traditional, “the design center and team really helped us in making choices in fabrics and materials,” she said. A large, functional kitchen was really a musthave for us,” Erin said. “It really is the heart of our home and we wanted a space that was open to the family room. We often have family visiting, we love to entertain, and with our active lifestyle it needed to be low maintenance, offer lots of storage and be inviting and comfortable.” In the kitchen, Erin chose to offset the Frosty White painted maple cabinetry with navy glaze topped with Absolute Black polished granite.

ike’s in the building and land development industry and was familiar with the style and quality

of the homes John Cannon built. “But that being said, this was our first custom home building experience and we didn’t know what to expect.” Erin had particular praise for their building superintendent, “His attention to detail, the follow through, being easy to work with, discussing and handling the typical tweaks encountered in the design and building process … both John and the team exceeded our expectations.” “Knowing that John was an expert in waterfront building, and knowing the exacting standards required, the Cannon team really shined, and with John’s input on determining the placement of the home on the lot while integrating everything we requested, his design resulted in a bonus of two enormous, oversized garages. Right now, with the children ages 9, 10, 13 and 15, we’ve got a lot of space we can fill,” Erin joked.

and halogen light sources. Highlighting show pieces, creating an inviting space to read a book or subtly illuminating a hallway creates visual appeal and a comfortable environment.

Controlling multiple light sources

can be achieved through simple multiple light switches or more sophisticated methods such as a programmable Clare® system with preset options or using your tablet, cellphone or laptop.

High ceilings can result in dark

spaces. Lights such as ceramic metal halide or high wattage halogens offer a focused, tight beam spread, which can often illuminate a room with better fill light than recessed downlights. Ambient lighting such as wall-mounted or pendant sources add visual appeal as well.

Decorating with light need not be

something to fret over, especially if you imagine how all your light sources work separately and together. Think of light as a dimension that can help define a space, and you will be well on the way to enjoying a home that can be transformed by light.

metallic tones and neutrals for dramatic effect. Think Big: This trend is a modernized version of mid-century design: Oversized lamps, shades that make a design statement, large hanging light fixtures in geometric shapes: pendants, globes, glass spheres and chandeliers in chrome, glass and crystal. Don’t be afraid to mix traditional, contemporary, futuristic or rustic. Homes with high ceilings can feature a dramatic fixture that simultaneously draws the eye up and fills the space. Retro: In textiles, wall finishes, furniture and even appliances, retro is a “blast from the past” in colors and design prevalent in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Fabric shades, prismatic glass accents, Art Deco-style mirrors and geometric wallpapers harken to eras gone by; high-end appliances in vintage colors such as turquoise and chrome are making a huge comeback. Nautical: With navy being a top color trend in many coastal homes, complement your interior lighting look with fixtures that incorporate beveled or seeded glass.

How to Choose LEDs As LED bulbs become more effective, more attractive and replace incandescent bulbs – those traditional bulbs that have been around since Edison invented them – it can be confusing to pick the right bulb for the right task. Though it’s not as difficult as learning the metric system, how they are classified is a lot different than we’ve been accustomed to for years. Here are some tips: Forget Watts. That’s actually a measure of energy (heat) output. Lumens measure brightness now and the larger the lumen number the brighter the bulb (For example, an old 150w bulb is 2600 lumens – the LED bulb is able to put out a very bright light using as little as 25 watts of energy.) So, forget the watts and focus on the lumens for brightness. Choose the Color of the Light. Just like incandescent bulbs, LEDs let you choose the color of the light. This is measured in Kelvins, and the lower the Kelvin number, the warmer (yellower) the light. LEDs available in “warm white” and “soft white” produce a warmer yellow hue like the incandescent bulbs you’re used to in a table lamp, and “bright white,” produces a cooler (whiter) light, closer to daylight, for kitchen and tasks. For outdoors, you can mix and match for ambient and functional lights, such as sconces and walkways. LEDs are dimmable. But, there’s a caveat: Remember the wattage thing? Incandescent bulb dimmers work at cutting off the watts (energy) to the bulb. Since watts aren’t part of the LED equation, LED bulbs can be dimmed, but not all LEDs are dimmable. (It has to do with how they’re manufactured). You need either LED bulbs compatible with traditional dimmers or replace dimming switches with leading-edge (LED compatible) switches. LEDs can’t be used everywhere (yet). Even though LEDs don’t give off lots of energy (watts again) they do give off some, and because of their design, all LEDs can’t be used in enclosed fixtures: only those approved for recessed or enclosed spaces can be, and most people find it is best to work with a professional in deciding what’s best to use.
