Letter from the President Dear Friends, Our family at John Carroll is building a better future, today. We are giving our students the foundation of a Catholic-Christian character combined with a superior education. We are providing them with the tools necessary to become morally strong and successful in their collegiate years and beyond. As the only private Catholic high school in the four-county area, we have created a lasting legacy of educating youth. John Carroll is both traditional and modern as we continually update curriculum and facilities to provide instruction of the highest caliber. Just as importantly, John Carroll is more than a school. John Carroll is a family that offers a community of support throughout the high school years and beyond. This family atmosphere is truly what makes us unique. Students are not “just a number at John Carroll, but rather receive individualized attention on a daily basis inside and outside of the classroom. Please read on and learn about John Carroll High School, from our academics, extracurricular offerings, and state-of-the-art technology to the faith-based values and standards that we impress upon our students. We truly have something for everyone. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2008-2009 John Carroll High School Viewbook and, on behalf of the entire John Carroll family, invite you to see for yourself the opportunities that investing in a John Carroll education provides.

is one of the most precious possessions a man can have. It is something lasting, and nobody can take it from you. You can lose your wealth, your power, your freedom, your health, but you never lose a good education.” —Right Reverend Monsignor Michael Beerhalter

T
he history of John Carroll High School dates back to its founding year, 1916, when the original St. Anastasia School building at Tenth Street and Orange Avenue was erected. The first year of high school was added in 1932, followed by the
addition of a grade level each subsequent year, culminating in the first graduating class from St. Anastasia in 1936. The elementary school was relocated to its present site on Thirty-third Street in 1961. In the fall of 1962, St. Anastasia High School was renamed Central Catholic High School. In 1965, a new high school was built on the present Delaware Avenue site adjoining the grade school and was named John Carroll High School in honor of Pope John XXIII and Bishop Coleman Carroll.

Faith
“
Having an opportunity to teach the Old and New Testament is really great. I love to learn; therefore, I love to teach. But teaching the scriptures is a double blessing because the scriptures are so complex that you can spend a lifetime learning them, and it never gets old since you constantly learn new things. –Dominick Scotto, Religion teacher
”
John Carroll is a school that promotes Christian values and the teachings of the
Catholic Church. We welcome students regardless of religious background or affiliation. It is our core belief that by educating the students in the spirit of Catholic Christianity and through the grace of Jesus Christ, we are able to provide a spiritual foundation that they will take with them for the rest of their lives. Students are required to complete a minimum of four years of religion classes. These classes not only educate students in Roman Catholic doctrine but also expose them to other religions as well.
Students attend at
least one spiritual retreat a year through which they become closer to God and to each other. Our students also regularly participate in the liturgical aspects of the Catholic faith. There are regularly scheduled masses and prayer or penance services providing the opportunity to integrate faith into their scholastic education and daily life.
