‘Fulcrum’ presents the work of three painters. Their work ranges from the abstract to the figurative, from the gesture to the construct. Together they balance on the tipping point between representation and abstraction. Here we find more or less painterly ways of working, experiments in pictorial possibility that test the image against the abstract potential of the material and history of paint. In bringing the work together in one show we hope to provide an opportunity for viewers to explore this territory with us.

M I R A N D A B O U LT O N

Miranda takes her inspiration from the Internet, which she uses as a sketchbook. She is drawn to traditional genres of images such as still life. Often within her titles she references temporal and sequential themes. She uses paint to add layers of time and contemplation to these images, making them tactile and personal. She starts with line drawings, which dissolve through a process of layering and accrual. Within her painted mark making there is an emphasis on line made with an energetic and gestural quality. These lines often leak out into blocked out areas of flat colour; which function as windows to the layers underneath where the paintings development is left exposed and evident.

HELEN L ATHAM We are inundated with jpegs and social media snapshots, which get a fleeting glance and are then discarded. Painting has a radical new role: it adds a layer of time, contemplation and introspection to an image. Making a mark on a canvas, which just makes sense as a basic human gesture, is meditative and considered. What interests Helen is the human condition- what it feels like to be alive today in our complex and often superficial culture: how do we relate, in a meaningful way, to one another? Helen chose the human figure and looked at the patterns formed by groups, aligned just for a moment in a way that communicates the sense of belonging or alienation we all feel. Modern-day technology is not rejected but incorporated into Helen’s working method.

FULCRUM

JOHN CLARK John makes paintings of models he builds and arranges in space. A limited set of ingredients, from digital scans to low-res polygonal constructions, are deployed across planes. They are puppets that are played within an open-ended process in which intention takes its place behind opportunity. The paintings emerge and mark a pause; a signal that something has been glimpsed and might be noted. That the models are figures lends a complicating narrative dimension to work that might otherwise simply be about the play of light and shade across objects scattered in space. Recent paintings have become smaller and simpler, studies that sit somewhere between still lives and anatomies. Heads float in space, arms lie on planes most commonly set against the black of the computers infinite space.
