We’re living in changing, challenging times for healthcare systems. So that Scottsdale Healthcare and the John C. Lincoln Health Network can meet these challenges robustly and continue to carry out their missions effectively, the two health systems affiliated on Oct. 1, 2013. The affiliation brings together two of the Valley’s most respected healthcare systems with long histories of quality care and innovation. Together, we’ll move forward to create the healthcare organization of the future. At the heart of both organizations is the dedicated and ongoing philanthropic support of individuals like you, people who care about the health of their neighbors and communities. Guiding and fostering this philanthropy will be the Scottsdale Healthcare Foundation and the John C. Lincoln Health Foundation. Tom Sadvary, chief executive officer, and Rhonda Forsyth, president, of Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network, address philanthropy’s role after the affiliation.
Q: Please tell us a little about the foundations. Tom: We’re fortunate to live in a community that understands and appreciates the importance of supporting locally based health providers that recognize and respond to community needs. Each foundation is governed by a local and diverse volunteer board of caring individuals and community leaders who meet regularly. Each member’s primary role is to provide fundraising support for his or her foundation. Community is the core of each foundation. Headquartered in Scottsdale and Phoenix, all contributions to the foundations stay right here directly benefiting our patients and our neighbors. We want each donor to feel confident that his or her gift is truly making a difference in the lives of their neighbors.
Q: Will the affiliation change or impact the existing foundations associated with Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln?
Tom: Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network’s compelling vision actively supports philanthropy. While the foundations share some similarities, they are, in fact, very different organizations. The foundations will continue as they are now, separate entities supporting the legacy organizations – Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln Health Network. However the affiliation provides the opportunity to share and leverage best practices.
Rhonda: The affiliation is a “win-win” for all. It will strengthen philanthropy across a broader spectrum of community services and patient care programs. There’s an increasing need for support of vital patient care, community health services and human service programs. Philanthropy helps meet these needs and will help us transform into the healthcare organization of the future.
Q: What role does philanthropy play now, and in the future, for Scottsdale Healthcare and John C. Lincoln? Tom: Our healthcare system is experiencing tremendous change on a local, state and national level. Evolving patient demographics – aging baby boomers, regulatory changes and reductions in reimbursement – impact us all. Because of this, philanthropy plays an even more critical role now and going forward. We need this crucial donor support to continue to provide quality care throughout our network. We also need donor support for the future expansion of services and programs to meet our community’s needs. Rhonda: With the affiliation, While the foundations our expanded share some similarities, healthcare delivery system now covers they are, in fact, very a larger geographic different organizations. area with a full The foundations will palette of services and programs to continue as they are meet the needs of now, separate entities our patients and supporting the legacy communities. Message From Marcia Mintz It’s hard to believe that we are already at the midpoint of 2014. As the weeks race by us, this is a great time to reflect on what we have accomplished so far this year. In just six short months, your generosity has enabled us to help make our community a healthier place for our neighbors in need. As we settle into the second half of the year, we can find inspiration in the fact that together we are changing and saving lives. Thanks to your philanthropic contributions, we’re able to make a meaningful impact on our community. Through our thriving new Sonoran Health and Emergency Center and our growing programs like G-60 and Transition Specialists—to name just a few efforts—we’re able to expand our reach and serve some of the most vulnerable members of the population. In this Mid-Year Report, we share highlights of some of our Network’s most vital programs so you can see the results of your gifts. On behalf of the John C. Lincoln Health Foundation, I want to express our gratitude for your unwavering support. Our entire community is richer for your generosity. With heartfelt appreciation,
Marcia Mintz President John C. Lincoln Health Foundation P.S. – Though the John C. Lincoln Health Network completed its affiliation with Scottsdale Healthcare last year, the John C. On May 17, John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital Auxiliary celebrated the grand opening of its new thrift shop at 336 E. Dunlap Ave., Phoenix. The North Mountain Community Thrift Store, formerly known as the Treasure Trove, boasts 4,000 square feet of space in which to sell gently used items. Proceeds from sales support a variety of programs, including healthcare scholarships, Desert Mission and Adult Day Health Care services. The new storefront, much larger than the 900 square feet of the old space, can accommodate more items than ever before. A larger store means that the Auxiliary is seeking additional clothing and household items to sell. If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation to the North Mountain Community Thrift Store, drop by the store or call 602-870-6060, ext. 1230.

Transition Specialist Program Expands There currently are more than 20,000 military combat medics and corpsmen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who need jobs and who could help preserve the health of Medicare patients released from hospitals across America. In spite of their rigorous training and experience, these veterans are considered unqualified for most civilian healthcare positions. Through a grant provided by the Del E. Webb Foundation, John C. Lincoln is providing employment relevant to the work they did in the field while harnessing their abilities, knowledge and disciplined initiative to address the needs of discharged elderly patients with extra care and support. The grant from Del E. Webb Foundation provided $250,000 this year to hire five more transition specialists plus an additional $250,000 in July 2014 to hire another five, bringing the total number of John C. Lincoln transition specialists to 14. Learn more at JCL.com/wellness/transition-services.
