From the CNOs The John C. Lincoln Health Network is committed to providing the best experience for patients and families and to building a great workplace. Our nurses enjoy their work environments and appreciate the opportunities. The result is a much lower turnover rate than the average for Arizona hospitals, no registry nurses and only a few traveling nurses during the high season, and seasoned nursing staff in all departments.
Maggi Griffin
All this contributes to an encouraging, supportive and stimulating environment for nurses. We place no limit on how far our nurses can go in our organization. We are proud and fortunate to have nurses in top leadership roles, so you can count on being valued and understood when you join our nursing team. We are a not-for-profit health network with extensive community outreach programs and the largest primary care physicians group in the Valley. We also are different in the way we serve our community and in the way we are poised to thrive in the future. Our success starts with asking the best nurses to join our health care team.

Our Hospitals John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital and John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital offer the latest diagnostic and treatment options for patients including cardiac care, pulmonary care, orthopedic surgery, spine and neuro care, reconstructive surgery, stroke care, gastroenterology, breast care, emergency treatment, medical imaging, and outpatient surgery. John C. Lincoln Sonoran Health and Emergency Center, located on I-17 south of the Carefree Highway, opens in December 2013. Both hospitals have been nationally recognized for delivering high quality, efficient and consistent care and have received the highest accreditations possible for heart care as accredited Chest Pain Centers, designated Cardiac Arrest Centers and Heart Failure Centers.
Magnet and Magnet Journey John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital was first in the Valley to be granted Magnet status, the highest designation for nursing care, by the American Nurses Association. North Mountain Hospital also was the first medical facility in the Phoenix area to reconfirm Magnet status. The designation places the hospital among the nation’s top 7 percent of hospitals for nursing care. John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital’s application to be on the Magnet Journey was accepted in December 2012. Although it’s a two-year process to complete the paperwork, a hospital is expected to be Magnet-ready when the application is submitted for the Magnet Journey. Magnet is the highest recognition for nursing excellence a hospital can achieve. According to the American Nurses Credentialing Center, research shows that Magnet hospitals have lower RN turnover, improved patient satisfaction, better clinical outcomes and a higher percentage of satisfied RNs.
John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital John C. Lincoln Deer Valley Hospital serves the north Phoenix metropolitan area as well as northern Arizona with a provisional Level III Trauma Center and pediatric care. The hospital is home to the Virginia G. Piper Pediatric Center of Excellence with its 24/7 Children’s Emergency Center, Mendy’s Place, and KidsZone, the inpatient pediatric unit. Its Emergency Center has a Pediatric-Prepared Emergency Care certification from the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Arizona Department of Health Services. Its overall care ranks among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the country for clinical excellence as determined by publicly reported data to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Deer Valley is one of seven Arizona hospitals designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by Blue Cross Blue Shield and also is designated as a UnitedHealthcare Premium Total Replacement Center. It is the only hospital in Arizona to receive a Premier QUEST Award for High Value health care and the first Arizona hospital to receive the Arizona Pioneer Award for Quality from the Arizona Quality Alliance. »» JCL.com/deervalley

Nursing at John C. Lincoln
JCL Connect, Our Electronic Health Record
Transforming Care at the Bedside
JCL Connect, our electronic health record system, has been implemented at both hospitals and our physician practices to increase care coordination through one patient, one record. In preparation for the transition to JCL Connect, nurses collaborated with other disciplines to standardize processes at both hospitals, introduced best evidence practices and modified work plans to work within JCL Connect. Our ability to provide the best care to the patient improves with the use of the patient portal, JCLMyChart.
North Mountain’s Medical/Surgical unit and Deer Valley’s Telemetry unit partnered with the American Organization of Nurse Executives to start an innovative program called “Transforming Care at the Bedside,” or TCAB. Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute for Health Care Improvement, TCAB was designed to empower nurses to redesign work processes to achieve better clinical outcomes, improve the quality of patient care and reduce staff turnover.
Continuous Improvement
Research and Evidence-based Practice
John C. Lincoln Network has adopted a Continuous Improvement model which encourages frontline employees, especially bedside nurses, to be involved in the ongoing effort to always review and improve every aspect of what we do.
John C. Lincoln Hospitals promote an Evidence-based Practice environment to promote positive outcomes. It offers nurses an Evidence-based Practice (EBP) Fellowship, during which they can learn about research and EBP through an interactive learning practicum guided by a PhD nurse researcher that results in a fullfledged EBP project.
This involves smaller projects and larger multi-disciplinary process improvement projects and is another way for nurses to have input into changes that improve patient care.
Shared Leadership Nurses in both John C. Lincoln Hospitals have a strong voice through a shared leadership model. Nurses at all levels are empowered to participate in decision making regarding the issues that affect patient care and their work environment through their unit/department-based councils, special nursing practice councils, a shared leadership council and ACT teams. ACT teams are employee-led and employee-driven committees who review and implement improvement ideas from other employees in their departments. Nurses also participate in multi-disciplinary Continuous Improvement projects to redesign processes that ultimately affect patient care and organizational performance.

Several of our nurses’ projects have been presented at state and national conferences and selected for publishing in peer-reviewed journals. A project on the early recognition of delirium in trauma patients at North Mountain received the 2012 national Sylvia Moss Brown Award for Excellence and a $10,000 grant.
Professional Development Nurse Exemplar Awards The Nurse Exemplar program provides peer recognition for staff nurses who use their experience in conjunction with expanded opportunities and authority to improve patient care processes and to maximize their personal skills and professional development. The Nurses Week Committee manages the Exemplar program. Any co-worker throughout the Network can nominate a nurse.
The Nursing Exemplar areas of recognition are Advancing the Profession, Clinical Care, Community Service, Customer Service, Research/Evidence-based Practice, Leadership, Patient Advocacy, Innovation/Creativity, Positive Attitude, Precepting/Mentoring, Teaching and Student of the Year. The awards are presented during Nurses Week with celebrations at both hospitals.
North Mountain’s TRAC - Transitioning Registered Nurses Across the Continuum “Transitioning Registered Nurses Across the Continuum,” or TRAC, started as a research project to determine the most effective orientation program for new nurses. After study and evaluation, the Evidence-based Practice Fellowship group designed TRAC as a six-week structured curriculum to support new graduate nurses with trained preceptors during their transition to professional practice. The nurses participate in professional growth and work across departments as they focus on “real life nursing” and transition from student to professional.
