Message from the Chief Nurse Executive

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Throughout 2023, we continued to expand the foundation of our Nursing program throughout the Health System. One fundamental component of this work involved crafting a tagline as part of an employee value proposition. By design, this serves as a succinct statement about Mount Sinai Nursing that speaks to our identity, reflects our nursing mission, and helps differentiate us.

In April of 2023, we invited every Mount Sinai nurse to vote for their choice. During National Nurses Week, we announced the decision: Mount Sinai Nurses—Creating Excellence Together.

Today, this value statement is being used in a variety of print and electronic communications— ads, social media, emails, and others— to represent the more than 8,500 Health System nurses and to recruit qualified nurse candidates to join our diverse team. In fact, in 2023 alone, we successfully recruited/hired more than 1,231 clinical nurses to join our team.

Mount Sinai nurses are among the top in our profession, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence not as an endpoint but a journey. We are committed to bringing our best to every encounter, working together to make a real difference in the lives of others, both one-on-one and within the communities we serve.

As you read through this year’s Annual Report, I hope you are as proud as I am of the many examples of how nursing brings our mission to life. These pages reflect your individual and collective commitment to providing exceptional clinical experiences and outcomes for patients and families in the many diverse communities we serve.

“Breakfast With Beth” is an informative series of gatherings held across the Mount Sinai Health System hospitals and ambulatory sites. Our Chief Nurse Executive, Beth Oliver, DNP, RN, hosts small groups of day and night shift frontline nurses to discuss the mission, vision, and strategic plan of nursing. Nurse Leader Academy (NLA) Updates

Nurse Leader Academy Program Vision:

To advance nurse leaders’ knowledge, skills, and abilities and prepare them to excel and adapt as transformational leaders in an evolving health care environment.

In the spring of 2023, the Nurse Leader Academy (NLA) welcomed its sixth cohort of graduates, adding to a collective of 90 nurse leaders who have successfully completed the program since its inception in 2020.

Plans are underway to offer in-person NLA sessions in 2024 with dedicated faculty.

Professional Accomplishments and Awards

The Mount Sinai Beth Israel Geriatric Psychiatry Unit had their abstract about improving patient experience accepted to the International Nursing Congress, which took place in Montreal in July.

Congratulations to Mark Dela Cruz-Hunt, RN, BSN, on being named the 2023 Manager of the Year at Mount Sinai Queens. This award is presented to a department head, manager, or nurse manager whose overall performance is consistently superior in providing leadership that supports service excellence, patient-centered care teamwork, and staff empowerment.

Congratulations to Eumenide Vernet, MSN, RN, AGNP, NEA-BC, OCN, and  Uzoma Anagboso, MSN, RN, for having their abstract titled “Developing a Standardized Method for Clinical Staff Training, Education, and Competency” accepted to be presented at the United Scientific Group Nursing Science Conference in April 2023.

Congratulations to Joan Miravite, DNP, RN, FNPBC, FAAN, on her induction as a fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She is the only NP in New York being inducted in 2023.

Congratulations to Siobhan Sundel, DNP, GNP-BC, ANP, on having two podium presentations accepted at the Annual Nurse Practitioner Association Conference in October 2023. Her two podium presentations are titled “Dementia: What You Need to Know Now!” and “Atypical Signs and Symptoms in the Elderly: What You Need to Know Now!”

Congratulations to Marsha Sinanan-Vasishta, MBA, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CPXP, for being awarded the Caribbean Life Humanitarian Award.

A nurse encourages colleagues’ participation in shared governance.” Stephanie presented this poster at the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Congress.

Congratulations to the Mount Sinai Heart Diversity Council , led by Kimberly Ashley, FNP-BC, Director of Nursing, Heart Transplant and VAD Program, who will be receiving the 2023 Diversity Impact Awards (DIA) Diversity Spotlight Impact Award at the Global ERG Network Conference in October.  This award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of the Mount Sinai Heart Diversity Council.

Congratulations to Bevin Cohen, PhD, MPH, MS, RN, Director, Center for Nursing Research and Innovation, and Kimberly Souffront PhD, RN, FNP-BC, FAAN, Associate Director, Center for Nursing Research and Innovation, on receiving funding for the research training program titled Translational Research and Implementation Science for Nurses (TRAIN), which will be funded by the NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in the amount of $740,000 over five years.

Congratulations to Marsha Sinanan-Vasishta, MBA, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, CPXP, on being named the keynote speaker at the AACN NYC Chapter Conference in September 2023. Her keynote address is titled “COVID Nursing-Relearning the Art of Building Connections: Mitigating the Impact of Lack of Personal Contact on the Patient and Family Experience.” She was also the keynote speaker at her alma mater, Lehman College of Nursing’s 2023 Graduation Ceremony. She also had her abstract titled “Improving Safety and Communication at the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation:  Implementation of Communication Huddles, Improving Patient Identification Processes, and Increasing ED, RN Time at the Bedside” accepted for a podium presentation at the 49th Annual Transcultural Nursing Society Conference in October.

The third annual Nursing Conference featured Mount Sinai Health System executives and nationally renowned nurse leaders presenting about the pathway to dismantle racism in nursing. The conference featured keynote speaker G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, of the American Nursing Association and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. An accomplished nurse executive, public policy advocate, and educator, Dr. Alexander presented “Overview of the ANA National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing.” Other presentations included “Actionable Allyship to Address Racism in Nursing” and “Leading with Equity.”

Nurses Against Racism (NAR)

NAR Mission:

Educate and engage every Mount Sinai Health System nurse to understand, create, and sustain an anti-racist and equitable organization.

After being promoted throughout the Health System during Nurses Week, the first Nurses Against Racism (NAR) Employee Resource Group (ERG) launched in May 2022.

Nurses Against Racism (NAR) 2023 Accomplishments

Analysis  of Systemwide HAPIs Through an Equity Lens:

• An interdisciplinary team effort to evaluate hospitalacquired pressure injury (HAPI) incidence through an equity lens.

• The team combined subject matter expertise and data modeling to evaluate differences in HAPI rates across patient populations.

• The purpose for this project was to identify differences in hospital-acquired pressure injury rates for populations within the Health System.

• The interdisciplinary team explored the impact of race, gender, age, language, payor, length of stay (LOS), clinical service, and other factors on HAPI.

Results:

• In all models, LOS had by far the strongest association.

• Unsurprisingly, age also had a strong relationship.

• In terms of race, there were no meaningful differences observed between white, Black, or Hispanic patients in any model.

• Asian patients were 24 percent less likely to develop HAPI compared to white patients.

• The most actionable finding was the elevated risk for patients who prefer to speak a language other than English or Spanish.

• These patients were 40 percent more likely to have HAPI documented when compared to Englishspeaking patients.

Financial Stewardship Council Updates

2023 System Initiatives and Accomplishments

Nursing leadership was tasked with the goal of reducing agency expenses across the organization as this contributed to the largest deficit in Nursing’s other than personal services (OTPS) budget.

In order to accomplish this goal, a multipronged approach was utilized:

• Established a weekly meeting with key stakeholders at each site to approve/deny traveler requests and extensions

• Monitored weekly needs based on current ADC and productive staff

• Limit contract period (from 13 weeks to 8- or 4-week periods)

• Reduced hourly rates by completing a market rate analysis

• Implemented MSPSON tuition reimbursement retention strategy

• Reviewed vacancies and expanded hiring strategies

• Converted travelers to staff

Implemented an automated RN Staffing Assessment Dashboard, which gave us insight into key metrics to drive better informed decision-making

• Available Staff vs. Unavailable Staff (LOA, Orientation, Unplanned Absences)

• Recruitment data (open requisitions, offers accepted, remaining gap to budget)

• Volume and budget-based staffing needs

• Projected orientation end dates to anticipate ability to decrease travelers

American Heart Association - Heart Walk

May

The Wall Street Run and Heart Walk took place on May 18, 2023, with Mount Sinai Health System earning distinction as the top hospital fundraiser. Mount Sinai teams successfully raised more than $55,000 for the American Heart Association, securing the honorary cup to commemorate these achievements for another year. The Wall Street Run and Heart Walk raises funds for cardiovascular research, lifesaving CPR training, and equitable health opportunities. A total of 283 walkers and runners participated in the 2023 walk from Mount Sinai Health System. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who donated and participated in this important event.

Emergency Department Fellowship Graduation

March 29, 2023

The  Emergency Department Nursing Fellowship, a 24week program, is preparing new graduates to transition into lifelong careers as emergency nurses. In the past two years, the program has graduated more than 80 fellows across the Mount Sinai Health System Emergency Departments. On Wednesday, March 29, 2023, the first graduation ceremony recognized RN fellows on the completion of this program.

Four new graduate nurses completed the Pediatric Critical Care RN Fellowship Program at The Mount Sinai Hospital on November 28, 2023. This fellowship prepared new graduates to work in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Pediatric Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.

Medication Safety Initiatives:  Waste Now Pilot

Spring/Summer 2023

The management of controlled substances is of critical importance to promote a safe work environment. Reports specify that having two options for PYXIS WASTE as “NOW” or “LATER” has resulted in many instances of unresolved wasting of controlled substances and places the RN at risk for leaving work without the correct disposition of these unused medications. As a result, in May 2023, the MSHS began a three-week pilot that would remove the “Waste Later” option in Pyxis so that only the “Waste Now” option can be chosen by the RN. This was piloted on three units: MSH 10E, MSW ED, and MSM 6E. The response from the pilot units was positive; feedback from staff was in support of removing the “Waste Later” option. These results informed a systemwide implementation in early 2024.

Pyxis Five-Character Mandatory Entry

Summer 2023

All Nursing medication dispensing cabinets were updated across the system to require a fivecharacter search while searching for (generic/brand) medications and ensuring that the correct medication is pulled from Pyxis. Pharmacy and Nursing worked collaboratively to educate stakeholders and implement this change with minimal disruptions to staff workflows.

Pyxis Five-Letter Entry Post Implementation Survey

Fall 2023

Following the successful Pyxis Five-Letter Mandatory Entry Implementation in Summer 2023, Nursing stakeholders were surveyed on their confidence in correct medication retrieval, medication delivery timeliness, and challenges that may have resulted. Survey results showed that the majority of nurses feel more confident that they are pulling the correct medications on override with this new functionality.

August-October 2023

Nursing and Pharmacy Departments collaboratively hosted Zoom focus groups with frontline nurses, nurse leaders, pharmacists, and pharmacy techs from across the Mount Sinai Health System to gather feedback on opportunities for improved communication and teamwork among the two departments. These focus groups were crucial for gaining insights on opportunities for increased efficiency and safety surrounding medication administration.

Translational Research and Implementation Science for Nurses (TRAIN)

Mount Sinai’s Translational Research and Implementation Science for Nurses (TRAIN) program supports Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students from underrepresented minority communities and disadvantaged backgrounds to become experts in translating research into clinical practice. Funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH; R25 HL161579), this 12-week summer program is the first of its kind to provide DNP students with translational research mentorship within the clinical setting. TRAIN delivers collaborative, multidisciplinary, multispecialty classroom education and handson research experiences mentored by experts in fields of health disparities,  hypertension, and other clinical topics central to NHLBI’s mission. This unique program offers a generous stipend to offset the financial impact of professional development in this critical field.

2023 Accomplishments

In 2023, the Mount Sinai Health System administered the KLAS Arch Collaborative EMR experience survey. The survey results showed a 40 percent increase in nurse completion since 2019. Efficiency efforts in the EMR have saved more than 36,000 hours of RN documentation time in 2023.

Mount Sinai Phone 2023 Implementation:  Provides select MSHS inpatient nursing staff with a new mobile device to extend existing clinical applications to the bedside.

Banyan Virtual Nursing

Banyan Virtual Nursing: This new system will allow off-site virtual nurses to observe and interact with patients providing nursing admissions, patient education, discharge instructions, and escalations to the on-site nursing teams. This system is live at MSSN. In 2023, the new Banyan Bridge telecommunication system was set up in 35 inpatient rooms at MSH to prepare for a unit Go-Live in 2024.

Population Health and Home Health Updates

New Learning PEAK Module Education on How to Identify and Address Social Determinants of Health

This past year, the Mount Sinai Health System nursing leadership team launched a new educational training video and course stressing the importance of screening for social determinants of health (SDoH) for all nurses in the health system. The video course educates nurses on how to screen their patients for social determinants of health risk factors and achieve health equity.

This course, which is available on Mount Sinai’s learning platforms, is critical to Mount Sinai’s nursing curriculum because, for many patients, non-medical social and environmental factors can contribute to poor health outcomes and disparities. We recognize the vital role our nurses have in caring for their patients and removing SDoH barriers.

By taking this course, nurses will learn:

• SDoH risk factors and their impact on patients

• New tools and resources to screen for SDoH

• Resources for addressing their patients’ social needs

Mount Sinai is proud to be a health system leader in adopting these SDoH screening assessments to support our nurses in implementing them in patient care.
