THE URBAN MARKET

4TH YEAR DESIGN STUDIO | AKRON OH | FALL 2017 The Urban Market aims at activating the hillside through a porous ground floor that serves as a flexible marketplace. Engaging the public in a new way at the street level enhances their experience down to Lock 3 Park, Akron’s central park and outdoor theater space. The new path of travel down to the level of Lock 3 is formed through terraced levels that foster the new marketplace. The marketplace serves as an extension of the urban farms to serve as the central hub for the “market-path” as designed in our master-vision for Akron. The open marketplace at the ground level is paired with housing above that is accompanied by various amenities such as work-out facilities, work spaces, lounges, and cafes. Shared spaces, such as the housing amenities and cafe/lounge are formulated as hovering glass masses that exist between the housing and marketplace. These masses are linked to the other spaces through vertical connections through monumental vertical spaces. The large vertical void spaces enable filtered light to reach down into the open marketplace below. The voids also enable a unique sense of connection between the private housing above, the shared amenities at the middle levels, and the public market below. From the street, the view is directed into the terraced marketplace. Then, as users enter the space, the focal point of view opens up to the center of Lock 3, engaging the park, and strengthening its prominence within the urban fabric of Akron.

The Terracotta panel facade system enables the feeling of an existing mass over the open market space below. The various orientations of the operable panel system breaks down the facade to enable shade, sun, and views to and from the housing units. The space-frame systems that exist within the shared spaces face the City of Akron and Lock 3. This promotes the user’s engagement within the spaces and offers a new way to interact with the exterior environment.

AKRON MASTER VISION

4TH YEAR DESIGN STUDIO | AKRON OH | FALL 2017 Group Design Project | Alexa Arnone | John DiAntonio | Kemet Floyd | Keaton Reinhart Promoting Akron as a self-sustaining city aims to attract the masses back to the urban environment. An interactive “market path” will re-surface an already connected axis route throughout the city. The main axis route connects to the Cuyahoga Towpath Trail and will be activated with urban farms, new residential spaces, and various other attractions. New housing has been located at key locations to allow for easy access to the city’s new amenities. Along the market path, the public may be more engaged with the exterior environment through a combination of “pop-up” forests, new green spaces, public greenhouses, and urban farms. Additional programmatic elements (a wellness center, co-working spaces, a performing arts center, luxury restaurants, retail spaces, and luxury and affordable housing) will also be placed along the new path. The vision for Akron promotes a sustainable future for the Rubber-City, so that it can thrive and grow once again.

EXISTING PROPOSED BUILDINGS “MARKET PATH” GREEN SPACES

The street is no longer used as an alley or service street, but can now be used to serve public functions. The path throughout the city cuts through existing buildings to create better access from Main St. to Paul Williams St. and a more efficient market path. New urban farms enable the community to have better access to fresh produce.

A

South Main Street could close at times during the year to host the market for people of Akron and surrounding areas. The public will be able to come and shop the fruits produced by the new Akron urban farms. Businesses from grocery stores to merchandise boutiques can come and sell their products. An old parking lot near the stadium may be replaced with a usable, interactive pop-up forest (seasonal temporary green space) which could host orange, apple, and various other fruit trees during growing seasons. The people of Akron will be able to come and pick fruit when it’s warm. In the winter season, the forest may be decorated with lights and other decorations. It will now serve as a year round interactive exterior space for users to not only live, but to also engage in their city.

B A B C

D

C An almost unoccupied area of Akron on the Northwest side of the stadium now hosts a small forest and serves the city as the central greenhouse complex. Throughout the year it can open for the people to see what has been in the works for the upcoming growing season. It remains in clear view for those who desire to look in from the path above.

E F

D N

The lot Northwest of Lock 3 becomes an opportunity for an urban farm to promote a self-sustaining city, as well as a close-knit community. Exterior spaces may be utilized as additional spaces for the markets. When not in use by the markets, these exterior spaces may be used for other community functions.

A new residential complex creates an opportunity for connecting residents with Lock 3 Park. The complex mixes residential spaces and performing arts studios to better serve Edwin J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall just down the street. This unique interaction between the students of the university and the community may bring additional activity to Lock 3 Park.

EMPOWERING AKRON

4TH YEAR DESIGN STUDIO | AKRON OH | FALL 2017 Akron is in a current state of redeveloping the city to bring a larger population back into its urban environment. Encouraging the move back into the city can be done through presenting the appropriate opportunities for the community. The focus of Empowering Akron is to promote a place where young and/or new entrepreneurs can have access to all the necessary resources and tools to start-up their profession. Co-working environments provide sharable offices, seminar, conference, and other various workspaces that cater to and promote successful startup businesses. Pairing the co-working spaces with varying scales of retail spaces below also offers another way to serve and engage within the community. The space greater engages with the public in its key location along the re-planning of the market path through the city. The path carves its way through the center of the spaces making it serve as a gateway bridging between Main St. and the Towpath Trail. The space physically serve as a gateway from one place to another, while it can also serve as a gateway to re-envisioning Akron’s urban community.

THE CONTEMPORARY WALL

3RD YEAR DESIGN STUDIO | MAGLIANO, ITALY | SPRING 2017 The focus of the Contemporary Wall aims at augmenting the relationship between the citizens of Magliano and visitors by embracing the idea of a new incorporation of the perimeter wall as a porous and functional space.

NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

IN

The historical perimeter wall once served the city for protection from the outside world. Now, the function of that wall is still significant, but the wall can serve as the gateway to bringing in the outside world, while also serving the community with a new public square. The Civic Center serves as the barrier between the exterior natural landscape and the inner urban landscape. The barrier is broken through the permeability of the design, enabling easy mobility in and out of the city center. The natural environment is pulled into the city within a green piazza space. The urban environment filters out while the piazza is continued down the slope of the sight.

URBAN GROWTH

3RD YEAR DESIGN STUDIO | CLEVELAND OH | FALL 2016 Urban Growth aims at augmenting the integration of the natural environment into the contrasting industrial valley along the Cuyahoga River on the Southside of Cleveland, OH. The concept focuses around a new connection between the Cuyahoga Towpath and the industrial valley through the new visitor’s center. The center is conceived as two intersecting forms. The main hub of the center is articulated as a protruding mass that represents itself as an overgrown vestige: fully covered with green walls as it serves to keep the historic significance of the industrial valley’s important role in the development of Cleveland. The industrial valley once bolstered the economy for the city, and as it is replaced with new infrastructure, the visitor’s center aims at paying homage to it.

CUYAHOGA RIVER

BIOSWALES

The integration of the natural environment is done through a central green “hub” of natural growth. A cascading staircase takes the public through the central space blanketed with green walls. The green walls further wrap the design to highlight natural moments throughout the various spaces. The cascading staircase also offers a unique framed view of the city as users walk down through the space from the street level to the river. An expanding view of the city in the distance is contrasted with the industrial valley and the natural environment that the new visitor’s center has to offer. The visitor’s center also aims to improve the state of the Cuyahoga River. Terraced bioswales occupy a majority of the site in order to make an effort to treat run-off water as it filters through the system.

CONNECTION

Central hub and gallery spaces project towards the industrial valley to highlight its significance.

VIEW
