SITE ANALYSIS East of City Hall Tower is a small vacant parcel approximately 120’x84’. Along the NE corner of Wells and Market the site is a prime opportunity to recover the corner site and pedestrian connection. Historically sanborn maps reveal a the Hotel Majestic used to occupy the location. Currently the site has some natural landscaping that could be preserved or incorporated into design schemes.

PRECEDANT STUDIES - Saint Denis Archives Building Paris, France By Antonini + Darmon Architectes 2009-2012 Budget: $3.1 Million USD (â‚Ź2.6 M) Area: 16,813 sqft 3-Story Wood and concrete structure

This building serves as the network media hub for the libraries Plaine Commune (24 locations). The architects took inspiration from physical memory or a hard drive for the design. The rest building is designed around the eiciency and experience for the daily operation. Compact circulation cores and skylights bring in daylight through these locations.

RELEVANT BUILDING CODES & STANDARDS

This section contains a brieft list of all building codes and city regulations that are relevant to the building program. All codes are taken from the 2015 International Buidling Code (IBC), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the city of Milwaukee Zoning. Note, this list is general and not the full extent of all buildings codes for construction.

DESIGN SCHEMES 1 - HEAVY CROSS

This design took inspiration from the Stockholm Public Library library by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund. The crussifix form allows for a perfectly balanced building to site on the site. With the primary entrance aliging with City Hall tower walkways. Built from brick, this design would have a central focus on the collection stacks and reading room. The raise roof would allow for indirect daylighting to penetrate the space. The double height lobby space provides great environment for events as the Archive hosts them.

29

30

DESIGN SCHEME 2 - THE KEEP

This second design is inspired by the brick work from the Helsinki University Library in Finland. In plan the brick work is expressed to create a thick wall, similar to a castle's keep, hence the naming of theis scheme. Programticlly this scheme sits in front of the City Hall Tower and address the corner as well as being a smaller foot print on the site. At 6 stories with a rooftop skylight. Entering on the South-West corner the guest is welcomed to an open lobby and cafe. The second floor is dedicated to the gallery space. Third and fourth floors are home to the collection stacks and a double highted reading space along market street.

31

32

DESIGN SCHEME 3 - STACK

This design scheme was inspired by book stacks and oset bridges. Starting from the ground floor a guest is greated by an architecural stair the will take the sta to an admin floor. The lobby is double heighted and opens to the 2nd floor. The arhive space start on the 3rd floor and has reading rooms that open to the City Hall Tower.
