Workmens Commons year fall -semester 2016 location Muncie, IN project
studio 401 collaboration with Colby Cline
The site is located in Thomas Park-Avondale neighborhood of Muncie. This once industrial part of the city has been experiencing the strong realities of what it is like in a Post-Industrial society. Unemployment is high, houses are often abandoned, and the residents left living here are strapped with finances and livelihood. Workman’s Commons embraces the great qualities of the life which still exists. By looking at the changing times as an opportunity rather than a struggle, we are able to embrace the great community aspects of Workman’s Bar. A proposed purchase and renovation appreciates the culture while providing new life into the space.

project studio 402 The restoration of an underutilized lake front and nature preserve in Lake County IL. The goal was to incorporate the experiences of place making from around the world. By shifting the Marina’s focus to a community driven location before boating would shift the dynamic of the area. By providing ease of access, more activity and connectivity to nature the lake becomes a more valuable asset to the community.

year Fall -Semester 2015 location Indianapolis, IN project Studio 301 800,000 square feet 900 in custody capacity Type 2 Construction*
Located on a 100 acre brownfield site across from downtown Indianapolis, the new community correctional facility sits along the White River. The Building opens up along a 45 degree access that optimized the view of the city as well as northern light for passive heating. Daily operation includes work release and various community and in custody programs to encourage development after length of stay is completed. Sentencing can be up to a year in length, visitation is allowed and all traffic is controlled via the South West corner. The concrete structure is board formed resulting in a softer feel than the smooth cast concrete. The sloped walls along the north and east facades pull back the rigid form and allow more light to enter the bottom floor café’. The curtain wall is double glazed with the outer layer constructed with a spider clip system that mitigates solar heat gain from the sun. A wooden beam system gently flows along the ceiling that guides an individual to circulation spaces. Stairs are the intended means of circulation to optimize the view and to encourage community interaction. Rooms are doubled, 10’x12’. The northwest and southeast corners of the building offer excellent views, and at night the spaces glow bright when light to act as a beacon to its surroundings.

Oppositions year fall -semester 2014 location project studio 201
This project is the oppositions of space and void. the site is a 50ft by 100ft space that was carved away to form a path from one end to another. Once solids where formed views where then carved into the space to form voids within. The line of sight from one side to another gives the impression that the path is simple, however the voids are not all accessible and the path offers the illusion of choice at the center. Solid vs Carved is the oppositon in plan view. In elevation the change in material from solid to stacked. Exploration in drawings as well as model show variation in combinations of oppositions and the path.

Refugee Housing RD PODS - Rapid Deployable
year fall -semester 2016 location Aleppo, Syria project studio 401 This project was worked over a 2-week period in which I was more concerned with the events going on in the world and started to ask questions about the architect’s role in disaster situations. Through research and news readings I found that the architect is most effective when it follows not state lines nor politics but upholding human rights. This project aims to ask the question of who’s responsible for the refugee crisis we are facing because of our direct intervention in countries like Syria. Many believe we should be responsible for taking them into our boarders some believe other nations should be responsible. This design reflects a possible situation in which these pods could be transported via military C-130 air craft and deployed rapidly in combat areas. These refuges are by in large just normal people that would like to live peacefully in their own nation. Instead of trying to solve the problem for them I have designed temporary housing and protection. Each pod can be fully equipped with supplies for building, medical and living. Each pod can expand and also be combined with other pods to form larger structures. Adaptability of the pod allows it to be deployed in disaster relief. At the time of the project hurricane Matthew was predicted to be devastating so I also looked at how this pod could be deployed along traditional disaster relief methods and be used to provide for people in need regardless of locale; war zone or natural disaster.

Indiana Hardwood Competition year spring-semester 2015 location martinsville, IN project studio 202 The Indiana Hardwood Exhibition Center is designed as an extension of the tree canopy. Developed through the experience of a tree stand, the master plan accentuates the natural level change of the site. The division of a maple leaf created the form, which blends into the tree canopy and extends into the structural system. The columns stem from the trees down to the ground. Incremental level changes and open ceilings give the spaces a strong connection to the outdoors. The structures system reinforces the feeling of the exterior environment into the space to promote the stewardship of nature.
