HOME TRENDS WHERE STYLE & ELEGANCE MEET

10

JOHN ERIC HOME

Are you planning a home renovation in 2020? This year, there are many new design concepts on offer – those that have either not been seen before or are being reintroduced with a modern flair. Here are four of these trends that are expected to last beyond 2020. Bold and Beautiful The past few years have all been about embracing our minimalist side, but now it is time to bring back the bold. With interior designs that are reminiscent of the pastel art deco era, you’ll be able to let out your maximalist side. You could experiment with beautiful wallpapers, gorgeous vintage furniture items, and even delve into the bohemian aesthetic. Indoor Gardens Environmental awareness is becoming more and more globalized these days, which is why plants are becoming a major part of green interior designs. 2020 will see a huge rise in the indoor garden trend. Now, there are so many ways to incorporate plants in any space. You could either go with unique hydroponic walls (especially if you want to get grow some herbs or eatable greens). Or you could go for oversized statement planters. You could even go for tiny succulents to test out your green thumb.

Statement Shower Areas Bathroom shower areas have become a staple of any modern house design and the current trends seem to be leaning in favor of statement shower stalls. These don’t really mean those typically tiled areas, but cabins that are the magnum opus of the room. Their fixtures, lighting, and backdrop would all be uniquely selected to deliver a gorgeous and highly distinctive design. Reimagining Marble Sleek and classy marble has always been a timeless part of our architecture and interior design. But 2020 will feature a whole new take of this iconic material. Instead of conventionally used modern-cut marble, designers are leaning more towards the roughhewn quarry-fresh pieces. This interpretation of marble is super rugged and usually interpreted in the form of either accent furniture such as coffee and end tables, or simple decoration pieces.

KITCHEN INFLUENCERS Backsplashes are making bold statements in kitchens in 2020

by Sherry Moeller

Among the kitchen trends surfacing in 2020 are the dramatic effects of colorful, patterned and custom backsplashes. From metal accents to monolithic slabs to natural wood, the backsplash has evolved as a way to make a bold statement in a typically neutral space. While white, gray and navy cabinets continue to be the mainstays of kitchen designs, backsplashes bring a touch of personality to the spaces.

JOHN ERIC HOME

A recent kitchen by Anthony Wilder Design/ Build, www.anthonwilder.com, features brass inlays within the marble backsplash creating a three-dimensional effect. Illuminated by side windows and island pendants, the backsplash pattern adds geometric shapes and a bit of sparkle to the kitchen. A second project showcases natural wood planks as the backsplash in an otherwise contemporary whiteon-white kitchen. To create a focal point within the backsplash, Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., www.casedesign. com, sometimes adds a patterned tile behind the range or installs encaustic cement tile as the backsplash, while Winn Design/Build, www. winndesign.com, likes the use of monolithic slabs for a sleek look in modern kitchens.

While Aidan Design, www.aidandesign.com, is currently installing custom tiles in some kitchens, they are also seeing recycled press glass tiles, in general, trending as an alternate backsplash design. For sustainable alternatives, Aidan Design is especially intrigued by Kohler’s WasteLab tiles made from dust, powder and scraps. As a way to rethink waste, Kohler has launched its first product, the Crackle Collection, in partnership with Ann Sacks, using this eco-friendly technique: www.wastelab.kohler.com.

LORI GRAHAM

L

ori Graham founded her firm and lifestyle showroom in Washington, DC. She has described her style as “old warm charm with urban flair” and “SoHoBoho.” She rocketed to the top of her industry when one of her projects landed on the cover of Metropolitan Home in 2007, and she was designated as one of five top young designers of the “Who’s Next” issue. More recently, Luxe Interiors + Design named her on their 2014 Gold List — a collection of top designers across the nation. Her showroom contains unique collections from all over the world, in addition to her own collection, LG Place. Graham studied art history at Georgetown University and design at the Corcoran School of Art. Prior to designing, she practiced law in Washington, DC.

Featured Projects A recent project was her work on a townhome. The family had four children under the age of 10, so Graham was tasked with making the space more open and kid-friendly, while still looking elegant. Graham focused on multi-functional spaces, such as a homework room/mudroom off of the kitchen. The walls pop with a deep turquoise and warm yellow. Her showroom, Showroom 1412, embodies a classy West Hollywood vibe, which is in contrast to the normal DC style. The showroom is a hybrid design boutique and art gallery. Graham’s idea is to have the space, which is full of chic pieces, inspire people when they come in and encourage them to bring those ideas back to their homes.

MIXOLOGY TIPSY TEMPTATIONS

36

JOHN ERIC HOME

“WOKE UP THIS MORNING” Glassware: Chilled Cocktail Glass Method: Shaken – Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish, serve and enjoy. Spiced Chili Syrup: combine 1 cup agave syrup and 1 cup water, along with 15 dried Thai Chilies (about 3 grams by weight) in a stainless steel saucepan. Bring to a simmer, and reduce for 15 minutes or until desired spice level. Salted Pepper Rim: Combine 1/2 part Kosher Salt, 1/4 part Black Pepper, and 1/4 part Cayenne Red Pepper in a small bowl or plate. Rub the meat of a piece of citrus (preferably lemon or lime) across 1/2½ the rim (outside) of a chilled cocktail glass. Then slowly twist the glass in the mixture so that the outside of the glass picks up the mixture in the chosen areas.

Ingredients: 2 oz. Olmeca Altos Plata .75 oz. Fresh Lime Juice .5 oz. Spiced Chili Syrup 2 Dashes Regan’s Orange Bitters Garnish: 1/2 Salted Pepper Rim and Orange Slice

The theme of the hit song from the Sopranos is about getting the day started and taking names. That is the best attitude when starting a new decade. This potent potable begins by drawing upon a classic, the margarita. Here those delicate and delectable layered flavors of sweet and citrus, are aided a vibrant push from homemade spicy syrup. On the stove, combine agave syrup, water and some dried chili peppers. Cool the syrup. Finally, add in Olmeca Altos tequila. Traditionally made with a tahona stone crushed method, this tequila adds the bright white pepper, earth tones and floral fruit notes that are so famous among wellmade agave distillates. After a quick and powerful shake, the concoction is ready. This drink will hit so many taste buds, the first sip will ring out and get the rest of the day going!

37

“KICKSTART MY HEART” Glassware: Footed Rocks Glass Method: Shaken – Strain over ice into a rocks glass. Garnish, serve and enjoy. Honey Syrup: Combine equal parts honey and hot water and stir till fully combined and integrated. Ingredients: 2 oz. Beefeater 24 3 Pieces Basil Leaf .75 oz. Lemon Juice .5 oz. Honey Syrup 2 Dashes Scrappy’s Bitters – Firewater Tincture Garnish: Lemon Twist and Chili Pepper “Oh!”...”Yeah!” Motley Crue has always been a tone setter for any exciting evening and a serious cocktail should do no less. This beverage starts with gin. In this instance Beefeater 24 is light and flavorful, with limited sugar and a full set of botanicals. To build upon the foundation provided by the base spirit, this spicy treat calls on old friends of citrus (lemon juice), herbs (basil), and a healthy sweetener (honey). This concoction calls for a touch of Firewater Tincture in order to raise its level. Due to exceptional potency, the scrappy’s firewater must be used sparingly as it can quickly dominate and overpower the additional notes to this libation’s lyric. While already on point, this cocktail will always be a hit, akin to a number one on the billboard charts. It hits all the notes and leaves the final sip with a rush of flavor, calling out for more.

“DON’T STOP ME NOW” Glassware: Rocks Glass Method: Muddle sugar, lime peel, and hellfire shrub in a rocks glass. Add ice, vodka, and mezcal; stir to chill and integrate. Garnish, serve and enjoy. Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Three Olives Cucumber Lime Vodka .5 oz. Del Maguey Vida Mezcal 5 Dashes Bittermens Hellfire Habanero Shrub 1 Bar Spoon Sugar 1 Piece Lime Peel Garnish: Lime Wheel The opening line “Tonight I’m gonna have myself a real good time” of the immortal Queen tune says all that needs to be said about walking into 2020 with attitude. This drink draws upon the idea of the ancient and still popular “old fashioned.” Spirits, sugar, water, and bitters; the old fashioned was a hit in the 1800’s, 1900’s, and will definitely be in the 2020’s. Because spice is a component, this drink starts with a base of cucumber vodka. Cooling from the first sip, the lightness of cucumber adds a refreshing balance. On top of the vodka is a light addition of Mezcal. A smoky more robust agave distillate than its cousin tequila, Mezcal is one of the hottest trends today. It allows the cocktail to stand up to the heat of the Bitteremen’s Hellfire Shrub. The shrub, full of habanero spice, can turn even the mildest mixes into an inferno. Here, the limited use adds the desired kick, for a mix that is somehow refreshing and energizing, much like the song it takes its name from. Make 2020 one to remember, and never hesitate to get the mood right and look a day in the eye and say “Don’t Stop Me Now”.

PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR THE NEW DECADE

WRITTEN BY MARC S. SCHLIEFER, CFP® PRESIDENT AND FINANCIAL PLANNER 44 JOHN ERIC HOME

It’s hard to believe that we are in 2020 already. I remember like it was yesterday that time in 1999 when we awaited Y2K and for all computers to stop working, all the scary predictions, false alarms, and sighs of relief when it passed. Now that we are starting a new decade, I want to explore things that you should be looking at for your financial and wealth management planning strategies. The biggest change for taxes is that a lot of people are taking the standard tax deduction instead of itemizing their taxes. The reason for this is that the state tax deduction is limited to $10,000 per year. This deduction includes state tax on your income plus real estate taxes on your primary and secondary home. For most people in the Washington, DC area that is usually going to be in excess of the $10,000, especially for a married couple. In addition to that being capped, the standard deduction for the 2019 tax year has gone to $12,200 for a single person and $24,400 for a married couple. If you have a mortgage, you may be able to itemize and get beyond the standard deduction. The maximum mortgage that you are able to deduct is $750,000, unless you are grandfathered with a mortgage before the tax law changed at $1,000,000. You will be able to deduct the interest on this mortgage. If you have a large mortgage, investigate itemizing your deductions. If you do not have a very large mortgage, the standard deduction may be better. You should have your accountant run the numbers to see what makes the sense for you and your family. You should look at deferring as much as you can into your retirement plans through your employer or, if you are self-employed, there are ways to get large amounts of deferred money put away into retirement accounts. If you are under age 50 you can contribute $19,500, if you are over age 50 you can contribute $26,000 into your 401K plan. If you are self-employed, you can contribute substantially more into retirement plans. We have clients that can put in hundreds of thousands per year into their retirement plans. We recommend that, however, only if they have enough cash flow to take care of their living expenses, and not have many employees for which they will have to contribute. Please feel free to email me at marcs@equityplanning.com for some details and we can get a proposal to see how much you can put away for yourself and what the cost will be for

your employees. This is a great way to put a lot of funds away in a tax-sheltered environment. The potential problem about putting a lot of money away tax deferred is that all of the funds that you put away will be in government-controlled funds. Every dollar that comes out of deferred funds(non-Roth accounts) will be taxable on the way out. This can be a problem. We can help clients with withdrawal strategies when retiring and looking at the best way to take funds out of a large tax deferred account. If you die with a lot of funds in your retirement account, your heirs will need to start pulling distributions out in the following year and there are a lot of restrictions on that. They will have to set up a beneficiary IRA and there are mandatory required minimum distributions on these funds. The tax penalty for not taking the minimum distribution on the funds is a 50% IRS penalty on the amount not taken. That is a pretty hefty fine. I would recommend that you have someone help you with these strategies who knows their way around the retirement maze when trying to make these plans a reality. Next time, we will look at other strategies that you should be considering for your financial planning for this decade. I hope you have a great winter. JOHN ERIC HOME

For many people, the end of the year signals a time to reflect on goals set and achieved, lessons learned and a review of all that still needs to be accomplished. Maybe you joined the gym, lost the weight, got out of your comfort zone and found new love. Or, maybe you are left wondering if you will ever check one thing off your list. Just the other day, I was talking with a friend who declared that 2019 had been the year he let himself go. His girlfriend was crushing life, and he couldn’t figure out how to keep pace with her.

“What has your girlfriend done consistently over the past year to improve her health and fitness?” He went on to list healthy eating (mostly), drinking plenty of water, sleeping well and a regular gym schedule. Once the list was complete, I asked why he didn’t do these things with her. He immediately answered: “Because…because it’s not that easy.”

“Well maybe next year,” he said looking deflated. “What about next year?” I questioned. “Maybe next year I will figure out how to be everything I am not right now. I just feel like a disappointment.” I thought about this for a good while before asking him what he wanted for himself. Not what he thought other people wanted for him or from him. What did he want for the year ahead? “I just want to be me, on my own terms” he said. “Well who is stopping you?” I asked. There ensued a long pause, and after much reflection he answered in one simple word. “Me”. As we went down the rabbit hole and investigated this narrative he had been spinning, I began to identify the excuses he had been using to pardon himself for not showing up and the roadblocks that he had built as barriers to entry. We began to hone in on health and fitness as an area he felt he had really fallen behind in. So, I posed the question: “Over the last year, what have you done consistently to improve your health and fitness?” He listed two half marathon races he had completed.

“Well, was it easy for your girlfriend, or did she just choose to make it a priority? Did she choose to make it count?” I asked. I have written about goals and goal setting, changing habits and the process of making change many times. But, what this story really reminded me of is the importance of: a) being brutally honest with yourself when reassessing your goals; b) stripping it back to what you can actually commit to; and c) making it count. Tune into your narrative and listen to the excuses that prevent you from, for example, going to the gym. If you start out with grand designs on working out 7 days per week, ask yourself if making a commitment to just 3 days would yield a much higher success rate and therefore motivation to continue with your efforts. If time is precious and you only have 30 minutes rather than an hour to sweat it out – guess what? – you still have that 30 minutes. So, make it count rather than writing it off. A “Make it Count” mindset really means using any opportunity that you have to move along the continuum of being that little bit better. Maybe the time that you have for a workout isn’t the perfect amount of time and maybe you don’t have access to exactly the right equipment or, maybe, you don’t always get to cook with your favorite ingredients – none of these things should mean that you give up on what you are doing. Consistency is your friend. Doing something over nothing is your friend. Always make what you are doing count! Here’s to taking all the lessons learned in 2019 and making 2020 the best year yet.

“Great, but what have you done consistently?” Silence. I changed course.

STYLIST FASHION FOWARD

WINTER TRENDS 2020 Who says that you have to be mired in winter doldrums. Sometimes, it just takes a fun piece of fashion to brighten your mood (and your environment) up! These winter trends will certainly do the trick… WOMEN Sustainable Threads – Noteworthy are the labels that center sustainability in their production process and find ways to limit their carbon footprint at every stage, like Mara Hoffman, Creatures of the Wind, Gabriela Hearst and Stella McCartney, who is considered one of the leaders in sustainable design. Swathed in Ruffles – Ruffles are the “just put a bird on it” trend in fashion. If it was possible to put a ruffle somewhere, rest assured at least one designer, but probably two or three, went ahead and did it. In addition to ruffled collars and shoulders, we also have a lot of dresses that featured ruffles as the main event. See-Through Chic – The affinity designers have for displaying the female form continues well into winter 2020 fashion trends, with all manner of see-through fabrics used for shirts and dresses. This year the creations were often worn under a coat or a blazer (it’s cold in autumn and winter, after all), but were just as provocative as they had been in previous years.

MEN Patterned in Plaid – This year you’ll be seeing a lot of monotone or subtle plaid as well as the return of mixed patterns including a lot of houndstooth, which was a favorite at last year’s fashion weeks. Plaid is an easy pattern to wear as it can be worn casually as a jacket or pants or dressed up as a suit or with a workwear vibe. The Leather Look – This year, subtle hints of leather will be seen a lot, some opting for a more full-on look with leather trench coats or jackets and even leather pants. An easy way to style leather is to wear a dark leather jacket over a monotone outfit, or contrast colors. Oversized Jackets – A staple you will need this winter is a huge oversized jacket. This is another style which will keep you warm while keeping you on-trend. You can go neutral, monotone and even add a huge pop of colour to your outfit with one of these huge coats.

CULTURE WHERE ART AND LIFE MEET

MOIRA DRYER: BACK IN BUSINESS The Phillips Collection February 8th - April 19th, 2020 Featuring 24 of her richly textured and color saturated paintings and sculptures, this is the first comprehensive museum exhibition to consider the early work of Moira Dryer (b. 1957, Toronto, Canada; d. 1992, New York City). From her beginnings in the early 1980s until her death, Dryer pursued a line of work in dialogue with modernist painting and abstraction while in consideration of more contemporary themes. Before devoting herself full-time to painting, Dryer worked for years as a set designer for the avant-garde theater company Mabou Mines, an experience that influenced her painting and the way she spoke about her work. This exhibition considers Dryer’s development as her work progresses from recognizable theater references such as curtains and spatial representations to abstract portraits that begin to move toward sculpture. Dryer infused her works with a level of pathos that allowed her to play with stillness and animation, reference and abstraction, and real and represented space. The exhibition also includes a collection of notes, drawings, and photographs from the artist’s archive that provide a historical context firmly placing Dryer at the center of the conversation regarding painting in the 1980s and 90s.

GREAT INKA ROAD: ENGINEERING AN EMPIRE Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian Through June 1st, 2020 Construction of the Inka Road stands as one of the monumental engineering achievements in history. A network more than 20,000 miles long, crossing mountains and tropical lowlands, rivers and deserts, the Great Inka Road linked Cusco, the administrative capital and spiritual center of the Inka world, to the farthest reaches of its empire. The road continues to serve contemporary Andean communities across Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile as a sacred space and symbol of cultural continuity. In 2014, the United Nations cultural agency, UNESCO, recognized the Inka Road as a World Heritage site. The Great Inka Road: Engineering an Empire explores the foundations of the Inka Road in earlier Andean cultures, technologies that made building the road possible, the cosmology and political organization of the Inka world, and the legacy of the Inka Empire during the colonial period and in the present day.

TONARI

The partners behind Daikaya, Haikan, Bantam King, and Hatoba are straying from ramen to open their fifth restaurant in D.C. Meaning “neighbor” in Japanese, Tonari will specialize in wafu pasta and pizza inside the former Graffiato space in Chinatown. The focus will allow Chef Katsuya Fukushima to repurpose the pizza oven. He and his partners—Yama Jewayni and Daisuke Utagawa— sought to take advantage of existing infrastructure rather than scrap everything and start anew. Daikaya and its upstairs Izakaya are located next door, and Bantam King is around the corner. Expanding their footprint on the block was attractive to the partners who felt it was a good opportunity to “set the tone for the neighborhood.” (WCP)
