WELCOME Spring is upon us! When one thinks of spring in Washington, D.C., the first thought that comes to mind is that of the beautiful cherry trees that ring the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial. It’s a magical time of year and one of my favorites to enjoy. It never gets old. The city opens its arms and welcomes visitors from all over the country and the world during this time of year. The Washington Metro Area comes alive with many activities in the spring from which to choose. Spend a day at Nationals Park or along the new DC Wharf; visit Annapolis and enjoy the some of the best crab cakes in America. Head back to the Arlington for the Rosslyn Farmers Market, or, The Plains, Virginia, for the annual Virginia Gold Cup. Another ritual is the return of outdoor dining. I just love sitting outside with friends and a great glass of wine and taking in all the life and humanity that passes by our table. From pups on their walks, to people window shopping to friends seeing one another, the beat of the city is scene from a cozy table street side. Some of my days either begin or end along the many trails and paths we Washingtonians have at our disposal for walking, biking, running, and hiking. I cherish walking my canine kids by the Potomac River and taking in the beauty of our city. We are so lucky to live in area that has prioritized outdoor activities. So, shed those winter blues for the warm sun and fun that is Spring. Get out and enjoy all that our region has to offer this spring!
Enjoy,

SPRING IS IN THE AIR Last year, 2017, the Netherlands exported nearly two billion tulips worldwide. Suffice to say, this lovely country sparkles in myriad colors in the spring. Holland is transformed into a vast sea of flowers from mid-March to mid-May, beginning with crocus season in March, which is then followed by daffodil and hyacinth seasons. Finally, the iconic tulips show their gorgeous colors, from mid-April through the first week of May.

The Tulip Route If you want to experience tulip season in the Netherlands to its fullest, you should definitely drive a tulip route. Holland’s longest tulip route can be found in the Noordoostpolder in Flevoland. Over 62 miles, through nearly 2500 acres of colorful fields, this is one of the world’s most beautiful roads. Marked by signs, it is easy to follow, as you pass through many wonderful tulip fields. There are also opportunities to enjoy many local activities. Pick your own tulips at the Tulip Picking Garden, for instance, or stop by farms to discover local cheeses. You can also admire gorgeous private gardens lush with spring bulbs, unique plants and lovely arbors. Texel Spring on Texel showcases the very best of a Dutch spring. Boisterous lambs meander in meadows, the flower-bulb fields blossom in all their glory and long beaches beckon for walks. Enjoy a morning, sandy stroll and then visit a terrace for a great lunch and glass of juttertje, a local liquor. (If you take the ferry from Den Helder, you arrive on Texel 20 minutes later.) Texel is known for its lambs, which you will find in abundance. There is even a special ‘lamb bicycle route’ and, if you want to cuddle one, visit the Rozenhout sheep farm. If you would like to eat lamb and not pet one, the restaurant Bij Jef serves dishes like you have never tasted before. Lamb is not the only menu offering here. Texel
is the place to travel if you love good food. Its restaurants showcase local delicacies. If you want to dig on your own, you can pick your own fresh vegetables and fruit at de Zelfpluktuin or ‘Pick your Own Garden.’ The calendar shows you what is ripe for the picking and you can take what you feel like eating. Or, visit the Wezenspyk cheese farm and taste cheese from cows and sheep that graze on the island. These are great places to see and wonderful produce to try. While Texel is not known as the ‘flower-bulb region’ in Holland, the islanders do have some wonderful flower-bulb fields. The island organizes special bicycle routes along beautiful fields filled with daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses from early April until the end of May. There is also a special bulb flower garden where you can pick and create your own spring bouquet. National Mill Day Of course, when many think of Dutch tulips, images of windmills spring to mind as well. National Mill Day or Nationale Molendag is held every second Saturday in May. More than 600 wind and watermills and water-pumping stations open their doors to the public. You can visit many wind and watermills and the millers often organize great tours and activities. The Netherlands is breathtaking in the spring. It’s almost as if the season was created specially for this region. Make sure not to miss it – it is most certainly a bucket list entry.

1. MIXED SEED BIRD FEEDER Sturdy and squirrel-resistant tube feeder creates a safe place for small birds to feed. It holds 3 cups of any type of seed, even small seed like millet and thistle and has four built-in feeding ports. Available at gardners.com. 2. SONGBIRD MIRRORED WINDOW FEEDER This popular window feeder features a one-way mirror film. The reflective film allows you to watch your birds—and prevents birds from seeing you. Try a different seed in each hopper. The roof keeps the seed dry for fewer refills. Available at duncraft.com. 3. ART GLASS BIRD FEEDER Why shouldn’t they dine from a beautiful dish? Designed by glass artist Stephen Kitras, mouth-blown in his studio in Canada, each feeder is one of a kind. Simply fill the well around the edge with seed. 9” long x 8” wide” x 6” high. Comes with a sturdy hanging rope. Available at acorn.com. 4. SQUIRREL BUSTERS PLUS Openings in the bottom section of the feeder align with seed ports, providing birds access to seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing the seed ports. Available at gardenartisans.com.

HOME TRENDS WHERE STYLE & ELEGANCE MEET by David Brown
SPRING STYLING
16
JOHN ERIC HOME
Stylish homes in 2018 are balancing several new trends. Homeowners on the cutting edge are already aware that fringe, geometrics, natural elements and florals are the way to go into the new season. These trends have been making subtle entrances into our homes over the last few months, but this year we are seeing them make a grand entrance, literally from your foyer to your powder room. Fall and winter were camouflaged in dark, cozy colors while spring continues the focus with ultra violet from Pantone (bright violet) and ocean side (emerald green merged with sapphire) from Sherwin Williams. If you feel these colors are too much of an investment or too bold, consider their other family members. Softened versions of these beautiful colors are perfect for restful spaces or just accents. Think lilac and sage green. Flower power is getting a revival with a more modern update. It’s time to say goodbye to low energy patterns. Spring is welcoming oversized blooms of botanical references in high contrast colors of black and white combinations or even teal and gold. This is a more modern approach to romanticism and is easily complemented with fringe. Fringe is appearing in small furniture pieces like footstools and ottomans as well as bed skirts and pillows. Love it or hate it, fringe has trickled down from runway fashion to our homes. Geometrics have not gone anywhere this year. There are so many ways to incorporate geometrics into your décor. It is perhaps the most approachable of all the spring trends. Utilize fish scale patterns in back splashes or a repeating pattern in bold tile colors. If you are really super committed, wallpaper an accent wall, small powder room or the back inside of your built-in cabinetry. Geometric patterns in small spaces make a big statement and give a ton of impact. Speaking of cabinetry, have you noticed that beautiful heavy kitchens cabinets are making appearances in BIG ways? Rather than stark white kitchen with monotone cabinets, there appears to be a renewed interest and
appreciation for bold cabinetry. Perhaps, it is a revolution since everyone finally realized you couldn’t hide your mixed match dinnerware and glasses in open shelving concepts. Be on the look out for warm grays, blues, creams and several other wood-grain tones. Also, be aware that brass is back, bigger and bolder than ever. Before you commit, perhaps consider a subtler accent. I am loving the new matte black in bathrooms and kitchens. It complements a variety of materials and styles and is a very durable finish for your hardware and accessories. I would be remiss if I did not mention a surprising defining movement also happening in kitchens. Perhaps, it is also a backlash to “the open it up movement” of the last few years. There is now a trend of homeowners seeking some sort of delineation in space. Slowly there are half walls of cabinetry going up to create semi-closed spaces between kitchens and living rooms. Will the walls go back up? I am not sure. It seems like we have come too far to go backwards but look at the current state of affairs in our nation–anything can happen. Natural accents once again play a leading complementary role to most anything in your home this year. Not only are we seeing wood use in decorative objects and cabinetry, we are still seeing it in shiplap, millwork panels and reclaimed wood boards on walls, headboards and custom furniture pieces. Concrete is being utilized in unexpected ways from furniture, decorative accessories, wallcoverings, countertops and tile. It is a trend that hasn’t left us since the mid 1990’s, but perhaps it has continued due to the farmhouse chic trend that refuses to leave DIY and other media. Lastly, one of the biggest trends on the
market right now is the Wabi Sabi design inspiration. Wabi-Sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection. In home design, this translates to handmade or hand painted items such as pottery, dinnerware, rough linens, uneven grains, naturally shaped objects and furniture. The result of this style is a deeply personal and organic aesthetic. It is essentially anything that helps you honor the space you live, regardless of how eclectic or haphazard it appears. No matter your personal style, one key factor to making this natural, organic trend for your home design is to find the beauty in the not– so-perfect. Think tables or cutting boards with burn marks or ceramics that have not been perfectly thrown. Accepting the idea that your home does not have to be showroom-ready is all it takes. Keep it real, be authentic, and be happy. Life is about living. Perfection is over-rated.

TEN AMERICANS AFTER PAUL KLEE Ten Americans: “After Paul Klee” explores the seminal role of Swiss-born artist Paul Klee (1879–1940) in the development of mid-20thcentury American art. The exhibition sheds new light on important figures in American Abstract Expressionist and Color Field painting who adapted aspects of Klee’s art and ideology into their own artistic development. Featuring more than 60 works from collections in the United States and Switzerland, the exhibition is the first to feature Klee in dialogue with William Baziotes, Gene Davis, Adolph Gottlieb, Norman Lewis, Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Jackson Pollock, Theodoros Stamos, Mark Tobey, and Bradley Walker Tomlin.

The most remarkable developments in the last century of astronomy are the enormous expansion in the power of both our observing capabilities and the content of our astronomical theories. But, despite these astonishing advances, astronomers still grapple with fundamental questions about the universe: its size, its beginning and, our place within it. In this lecture, Robert Smith, professor of history at the University of Alberta, will examine how astronomers in the past set out to address these questions. He will also place the James Webb Space Telescope into a broad context to better reveal the place of the premier space observatory in the next decade of astronomy. JOSH HILDRETH & HUTTON WILKINSON CREATE THE TEA FOR TOUMANOVA TABLE SETTING AT HILLWOOD MUSEUM’S THE ARTISTIC TABLE Open until June 10, the exhibit presents inspired designs by top contemporary tastemakers by Sherry Moeller
Josh Hildreth, principal of Josh Hildreth Interiors, and Hutton Wilkinson, owner, creative director and president of Los Angelesbased Tony Duquette, Inc., created the Tea for Toumanova table setting at Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens’ latest exhibit – The Artistic Table – open through June 10, 2018. Hildreth and Wilkinson, who have imagined a sumptuous champagne tea celebrating the renowned ballet dancer Tamara Toumanova, are among contemporary tastemakers including Timothy Corrigan, Barry Dixon, Charlotte Moss, Alex Papachristidis, and P. Gaye Tapp who are presenting table settings inspired by Marjorie Merriweather Post’s exceptional flair for entertaining. This exhibit aligns with Hillwood’s mission to share the cultural treasure left for the public’s enjoyment by Merriweather Post. “The design intent of the Hillwood project was to swirl classic Hutton Wilkinson/Tony Duquette design with some of the more contemporary design elements of Hillwood from the 1950s,” says Hildreth. 20
JOHN ERIC HOME
The pair started with the selection of Merriweather Post’s Order of St. George porcelain, which acknowledges the prima ballerina’s Russian heritage and gives the table an air of imperial splendor. The plate’s ribbon is referenced in the undulating ruched coral red fabric that borders the bottom of Wilkinson’s Jim Thompson Gemstone fabric used for the tablecloth. A tour of the mansion drew additional inspiration from the 1950s’ silver tea leaf square walls and a deep ebonized parquet floor with brass inlay sunburst. Translated into red verre eglomise wall panels and painted floor cloth in collaboration with Lisa Tureson of Studio Artistica, the whimsical setting began to take shape. The Venetian chandelier and assemblage of luxe tabletop objects, including Hillwood’s recently acquired Russian Demidov Copper Factory teapot along with items from Timothy D. Albrecht with Consider It Done and Hildreth family heirlooms, suggest the verve of modern life in the European cities where Toumanova performed with the Ballets Russes, the Paris
Opera Ballet, and other leading dance ensembles from the 1930s to the 1950s. Additional local artisans who contributed to the finished romantic setting that “celebrates Hutton’s incredible style and generosity of spirit,” says Hildreth, include tablecloth and chair fabrication by Gretchen Everett Design, pagoda elements by John Matthew Moore, and additional artistic support by Broadway Galleries and Milena Diez of Studio Artistica. For more information about Hillwood’s The Artistic Table exhibit, visit www. hillwoodmuseum.org. For more information about Josh Hildreth, go to www. joshhildrethinteriors.com.

THOS. MOSER OFFERS GIFTS OF MEANING INCLUDING THE NEW FLY-TYING DESK, A COLLABORATION WITH L.L. BEAN The Handmade American Furniture firm founded in 1972 presents award-winning legacy pieces to be handed down from generation to generation by Sherry Moeller
When Tom Moser left his Bates College teaching position in 1972, he set out to restore the lost art of fine woodworking with his wife and four sons. Today, with more than 70 craftsmen and women, Thos. Moser, Handmade American Furniture continues to create legacy pieces that are enjoyed by multiple generations. “I like to think that there’s good karma in every one of the chairs I make,” said one of Thos. Moser’s craftsmen in this recent video, https://www.thosmoser.com/gifts-of-meaning/. “I know I have a good attitude when I’m making it and I sure hope that gets soaked into the grain a little bit.” For instance, the New Gloucester Rockers are passed from generation to generation; Olympian Joan Benoit Samuelson awards Beacon Boxes to winners of her Beach to Beacon 10K Race; and Good Design Award winners - the Atlantic Chair, the Hancock Table and the Foreside Bed – are among the newest designs handcrafted by men and women who pour their souls into their work. “Working with wood is so satisfying, I can’t put it into words,” adds another craftsman. 22

New to the lineup is the Limited Edition Fly-Tying Desk in collaboration with the iconic L.L. Bean brand for the ultimate fisherman gift, https://www.thosmoser.com/ shop/fly-tying-desk/. This desk can still be custom ordered after the limited edition desks are sold. Each piece of furniture is signed by the maker. “Signed on the bottom, knowing there is some legacy of me left behind when I’m not here anymore, it gives me comfort and joy,“ a craftsman says. In addition, experience that joy yourself by working side by side with a craftsman to create your own legacy in wood via Thos. Moser’s Customer In Residence program, https://www.thosmoser.com/aboutthos-moser/customer-in-residence/, another great option for giving a gift of meaning. For additional info about Thos. DC FUN FACTS TIDBITS OF INTERESTING DC FACTS
The average blooming date for the Yoshino cherry trees is April 4, while the earliest blooms were March 15, in 1990. The latest blooms were April 18, in 1958. The average lifespan of the trees is 60 years. With careful cultivation, they can last upward of 100 years. In Japan, there are flowering cherries that are more than 1,000 years old. The Kwanzan cherry tree, the second-most-numerous variety between the Tidal Basin and Hains Point, blooms two weeks after the Yoshino trees. Since the 1960’s, horticulturalists with the National Park Service and the National Arboretum have tried to preserve the trees’ genetic characteristics by replacing dying trees with genetic clones (individuals grown from cuttings of the originals).
Cherry Blossom Edition 28
JOHN ERIC HOME
Flowering cherries actually don’t belong in a traditional Japanese Garden. Conifers, maples, azaleas and mosses are all much more common in traditional Japanese gardens, which are created to showcase year-round seasonal interest. In Japan, flowering cherries, with their short blooming period, symbolize the ephemeral. They’re more likely to be planted in parks.
KID’S CORNER FROM THE MOUTH OF BABES
DON’T SINK YOUR OWN BATTLESHIP! by Louise Jones Planning to go on a vacation? Well, you might need some tips to help you and your kids have a great trip. When my family goes on vacation, we have some things that help us have a lot of fun. It makes me very excited for our trip to Mexico this year! So, I hope these tips can make you just as excited. Whenever I go somewhere and I need to pack clothes, I bring my duffle bag. Duffle bags are easy to carry and if you are waiting in the airport you can use them as a pillow. Most kids use rolling luggage that can be hard to use, and they can’t use it themselves because it is too heavy and awkward. By using a duffle bag with an over the shoulder strap your kids can start to carry their things and it would make it a lot easier on you. When it comes to packing, we never over pack. You really don’t need to take that much. You only need a few outfits that you can rewear on your trip. It’s surprising how little clothing you need to bring. Also make sure that the clothes you are packing are very comfortable. I would be miserable on vacation without anything comfy. In the beginning, packing can be difficult, so your kids need to learn and get experience with it. What better way to learn then to teach your kids now? Start to let your kids pack their own bags so that they can do it by themselves in the future. I started packing when I was very little because we go away to my lake house every weekend in the summer. This gave me practice and helped me become a better packer. My Mom still checks my bag for big trips, but my sister and I need no help doing it at all! Sometimes car and plane rides can be boring and kids resort to electronics. But there are other things that they can do. You can get inexpensive travel games and toys that you only use when you go away. That way they are special and “new” when you get to use them. When I go on plane rides I bring “Yatzee” and “Battleship”. They are also good to bring to restaurants on the trip. Your kids can play them quietly at the table either before or after dinner while the adults are talking. Another thing you can do is ask to meet the pilot. I got to meet a pilot once and learned all about the plane and all of the different buttons. When you are driving somewhere on a road trip, you can stop somewhere or do something that you didn’t plan to do. It’s not a bad thing to not follow an exact schedule.
When you are on vacation its ok to not do everything. Sometimes you just need to relax and give your kids a break. Doing every activity that they offer on a trip can be exhausting and too much. Kids need to do some things that they want to do as well. You should let them pick a few small things like some places to visit or restaurants. Remember, it is their vacation too! I hope that these tips help you and your family enjoy your vacation more. So let them pack a duffle bag, take some new and different games, and don’t try to do every activity. I know that I will definitely have a great time on my vacation this year. I hear a “Yatzee!” in my future!

WITH A TWIST Glassware: Rocks Glass Method: Combine ingredients into a cocktail shaker and strain over crushed ice into a rocks glass. Top with a float of blackberry liqueur and a lemon twist. Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Monkey 47 Gin .5 oz. Simple Syrup .5 oz. Lemon Juice 4 Pieces Basil Leaf Crushed Ice Garnish: ¼ oz. Float of Crème De Mure (Blackberry Liqueur) and a Lemon Twist For as long as spring has been a favorite season, basil has been a favorite ingredient. Crisp and uplifting, the exceptional tastes of basil make it a cocktail ingredient beloved by many, and it is an especially seamless partner to a spirit like gin. In this case, the dancing partner is Monkey 47 dry gin from the Black Forest of Germany. With 47 botanicals (mainly Juniper and Lingonberry) Monkey 47 highlights a vibrancy that is only matched by the basil itself. To best showcase this delicious duo, the classic cocktail the Bramble (Invented by the famed, late Dick Bradsell in London) makes for a most incredible vehicle. The sweet, the sour, the bold and the beautiful all match together for a drink that is truly classically styled yet set to modern tune. This spring, make it count and, when it’s time for a drink, or a dance, do it with a twist for a delicious evening.
SPRING MEDICINE Glassware: Julep Cup Method: Muddle mint and simple syrup in a julep cup. Fill half way with crushed ice, add sherry and sparkling wine and then stir to chill and integrate. Fill the cup the rest of the way with crushed ice and add a mint sprig for garnish. Ingredients: 2 oz. Sandeman Fino Sherry .5 oz. Simple Syrup 5 Pieces Mint Leaf 1.5 oz. Campo Viejo Cava Brut Reserva Crushed Ice Garnish: Mint Sprig *Option: For a dryer flavor, add a dash or two of orange bitters with the garnish
Sherry has long been a favorite of ancient masters and modern mixologists all over the world. Its light, bright, and slightly herbal flavors make it an excellent choice for a low ABV and refreshing cocktail. Here, the Sandeman Fino makes the perfect choice for a modern twist of a famous classic, the Mint Julep. The rich, yet dry flavors of the Fino match up with the mint and sparkling wine like a spring acapella group with notes as refreshing as the newly brought warm weather. The sugar, as the old saying goes “helps the medicine go down” (a traditional line since the word Julep roughly translates to ‘medicine’). However, in this cocktail it doesn’t act as a cover up, but only as a way to enhance the savory essences of the ingredients used. This spring, show off a little bit, and go for the gusto and entertain with style, and a little spring medicine won’t disappoint!
ALL NIGHT LONG Glassware: Collins Glass Method: Muddle cucumber and Ancho Reyes in a cocktail shaker. Combine rest of ingredients and shake with ice. Strain over crushed ice into a Collins Glass. *Watermelon Juice: Can be purchased or home made in a blender or juice extractor. Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Avion Silver Tequila .75 oz. Ancho Reyes (Ancho Chile Liqueur) .25 oz. Lime Juice 1 oz. Watermelon Juice 4 Cucumber Slices Crushed Ice Garnish: Cucumber Slices Spring is, without a doubt, the season for the number one cocktail in the United States. The Margarita. Rich, slight tart, earthy, with notes of sweet and sour, the Margarita has been King of the Hill for a long time. This modern twist hits all the high notes. The Ancho Reyes takes the place of traditional orange liqueur, adding body and just enough spice to keep the lips ready for another sip. However, the spice is balanced when the cucumber adds cool refreshment to the front end of this vibrant seasonal libation. The coupe de grâce though, is the dual pillars of the Avion Sliver and the Watermelon. Refreshment to a “T”. The Highland Tequila, renowned for its bright and floral tones, acts as part of the terrific twosome with the watermelon juice for a cocktail that is built to go the distance. This year, kick spring up a notch with this delicious twist off a traditional margarita and keep the night alive, all season long!

MIXED BERRY SORBET SIMPLE SYRUP: 2-1/2 cups water 2-1/2 cups sugar SORBET: 2-1/2 cups simple syrup Two 10 oz bags frozen mixed fruit , mostly thawed (alternatively, use one 10 oz bag frozen strawberries and one 10 oz bag frozen blueberries) 1. To make the simple syrup, start with 2-1/2 cups water and 2-1/2 cups sugar. Mix ingredients together in a medium size saucepan. 2. In the KitchenAid 354 blender, add the mixed fresh fruit with any juices. Use the low button, start to blend. Add 2-1/2 cups of the simple syrup. Switch speed to Medium and blend for 30 seconds. 3. Attach the cold Ice Cream Maker attachment to the KitchenAid stand mixer and attach the paddle. Turn the stand mixer speed to 1, then pour the mixture into the ice cream maker. Mix for 20-25 minutes. Eat immediately as a soft serve. Alternatively, you can transfer sorbet into a airtight freezer-safe container and freeze for several hours for a firmer result. Yield: 6 cups. SHAVED ASPARAGUS, PEA, AND PROSCIUTTO SALAD INGREDIENTS 1-pound fresh peas, shelled (see note) 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon minced shallot 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/2 cup olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 bunch asparagus, woody ends trimmed 6 cups spring greens 2 tablespoons chopped mint 8 slices prosciutto (preferably prosciutto di Parma), cut into thin strips 1/4 cup shaved Parmesan cheese Directions 1. Bring a small pot of salty water to boil. Cook the shelled peas in boiling water 3-4 minutes, until tender. Drain and let cool. 2. Meanwhile, whisk the lemon juice, shallot, and mustard in a salad bowl. Whisk in the oil in a slow stream to emulsify into a dressing. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 3. Lay the asparagus on a cutting board, and, holding the tip, use a vegetable peeler to shave strips lengthwise down the stalk. Reserve the tips. Toss the greens, asparagus, peas, and mint together in a large bowl with the dressing. Dress and season to taste with salt and pepper. Top with prosciutto and asparagus tips and sprinkle with Parmesan. Note: Thawed frozen peas can be used in place of fresh. If using frozen peas, thaw and skip step 1.
STYLIST FASHION FOWARD This spring, in the accessories world, both men’s and women’s fashion are featuring simultaneous trends. Namely, tiny sunglasses, hats and a plethora of handbags – or manbags as the men’s version is called. TINY SUNGLASSES ARE HERE TO STAY! For both men and women, the teeny, tiny, almostnot-there-at-all sunglasses trend will still be going strong throughout the spring and summer. Sleek, skinny shades appeared at Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Prada, meaning that these micro-frames will be taking over the streets near you! DID SOMEONE SAY HATS? In a climate-changed world, the weather can’t be trusted. Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld went for rain bonnets, while Jacquemus created supersized sun hats for the beach. Meanwhile, on the men’s side baseball hats and berets made the fashion statement. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BAGS How much time have you spent putting together a wow outfit only to have a bland bag bring it down? No more! Prada, Proenza Schouler, Marni, and more are advocating for turning women’s bags into conversation pieces. But, men aren’t left out of this craze this year. Man bags – such as those featured by Louis Vuitton in their spring collection – are becoming the rage. Bookbags, crossbodies and satchels will be adorning men everywhere.

How to Handle Market Volatility
Volatility

JOHN ERIC HOME
I’m writing this article on February 12, after a week of falling stock market. We have been in a stock market that has done nothing but go up for the past 10 years. There were slight pullbacks, but the overall direction was mainly up. It has been a while since financial markets have had downward pressure. The drop was swift, over 1000 points on some days. People started to think that the end of the good stock market was over and, the good times were over. Well, every market needs a healthy downturn to get rid of some of the irrational buying and bring people back to some type of reality. Neither extreme is good, too much upswing usually means that the market is over-bought, and too much downswing means the market is over-sold. This time, when the market dropped, it dropped in big numbers like 1000 points, which equated to a 4% drop. Because the market went up so much, a 4% drop isn’t bad, but a 1000 point drop appears bad. The biggest thing you want to do is to put this market downturn in perspective. In January, the market rose about 8%, which is a pace that could never be sustained. That would approximately be a 100% increase over a year, which is not very realistic. We did not get many people panicking when the market went up 8%; in fact, many people wanted to add to the market. When the
market dropped 10% over this month, that was the time to consider buying into the market since things were on sale. If your time horizon on your investments is long term, you should look at a drop like this as a buying opportunity. You should review your financial plan and goals and seek assistance when the market drops. Sometimes knowing your goals and desires allows you to see the bigger picture when things do not go well in the stock market. The key is to keep your emotions in check and see how your future will be impacted if you stay for the long term, or pull out and figure out when to get back in. Most of the time, people get out when the market is low and then get back in when it has gone up. If you do this too often, you deplete your assets quickly. The stock market is not going to disappear when it drops back. It usually means that too many people of programmed trades think that the levels achieved are too high and there are more sellers than buyers. Finding a good price level for stocks can take a while and you will see the volatility indexes spike. Comparing a fast stock correction is a lot different from the dramatic recession that we had in 2008. In 2008, the banking system was in turmoil and the whole economy was on the brink of collapse. Our economy and the world economy seems to be in much better condition
than it was back in the 2008 meltdown. I am happy to review investment portfolios and perform a stress test to see what type of a potential outcome that your portfolio would have if there were a real serious pullback. Please feel free to email me at marcs@equityplanning. com. Until next time, I hope that your portfolio weathers this small (hopefully), storm.
