A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now that the holidays are over and the last of the champagne bottles have been emptied, winter is officially upon us. (Although, you wouldn’t know it by the weather these days.) This seasonal change is accompanied by a bit of boredom, unpredictable and challenging weather and the longing for spring. It’s also time to open the pages of John Eric Home and indulge! With the new year, many of our readers consider home renovations. Saint Lucia stands apart from the rest of the Caribbean islands thanks to its varied landscape and diverse culture and cuisine: a cuisine which is an amazing amalgamation of African, Indian, Caribbean, British, Spanish and French influences. Visitors can explore everything from the Piton Mountains and the rainforest to the Sulphur Springs of Soufriere and the Caribbean coral reef on this 238 squaremile island in paradise. Sea and sun naturally play a large role in this island’s appeal. It’s why so many people travel here time and time again. Lounging under a thatched hut with an exotic cocktail in hand while taking in the legendary views that Saint Lucia offers is reason enough to visit. But, the beauty of Saint Lucia also provides the perfect backdrop for adventure. There are mountains to climb, forests to explore and underwater worlds to discover. The ancients revered Saint Lucia -- Ioüanalao or Hewanorra, as it was called -- and fought to preserve it. Visitors can explore its local waters by kiteboarding in the morning and embarking on afternoon cruises or, by snorkeling and turtle watching all day long. Outfits like Mystic Man Tours and Sea Spray Cruises can provide delightful itineraries. There are various ways to tour the island as well. Take a horseback ride on the beach as the sun sets or ride along the island’s dirt paths and roads on bicycles. For those more adventurous, scenic helicopter excursions are an exciting way to see the island, as is zip lining through its treetops. Of course, the primary reason that visitors come to Saint Lucia is to relax and enjoy the island vibe. Wherever you go, colors will mesmerize you. Vistas will astound you. And, the tropical air will caress you. You’ll find all of your senses working overtime on Saint Lucia!

TILETRENDS by David Brown As technology evolves and practicality plays a more important role in our lives, we suddenly find our homes changing too. Many of us love the natural beauty of wood plank floors, while others will argue that tile flooring is just as beautiful and is a more logical choice. What is the most beautiful and yet easy to maintain? The solution to our dilemma is now right before us. There is finally an affordable option to flooring that combines the practicality of tile and the sophistication of wood. Technology in the tile industry has produced tile that looks so much like wood you’d have to get down on your hands and knees to see the difference. Little details like grain, knots, and variations in shade are easily replicated. Tiles now range from a finish that is an exact replica for dark stained walnut to wood from a well-weathered French fishing boat. With reclaimed wood so on-trend, buying wood tile is an alternative to searching for the perfect hundred-year-old barn wood, and tiles are available in dimensions that wood is typically not found.

What is faux wood tile? Ceramics are an ancient craft that dates back more than 4,000 years, originating in Ancient Egypt around 4,700 BCE. The origin of the word “ceramic” is derived from the Greek word “keramos,” or pottery. The art of tiling spread west from the Middle East and became popular in Europe during the 11th century with the introduction of mosaic flooring and panels. Tiles, made from clay, once shaped and dried, are fired in a kiln at very hot temperatures. This process hardens them, creating bisque that can then be glazed and fired a second time. They can also be used unglazed although the color range is limited to the natural shades of the clay. The beauty of hardwood flooring is timeless, yet fleeting. Unfortunately, the biggest disadvantage of hardwood flooring is that it can easily scratch from furniture and everyday foot traffic. Faux wood tile is much more scratchproof. By using wood tile in high


traffic areas, you don’t have to worry about the chips and scratches you might see on real wood floors and it is perfect for pets too. Ceramic tiles are also a popular choice of flooring due to their aesthetic appeal, as well as their durability and easy care. A properly installed ceramic tile floor will outperform and outlast nearly any other floor covering product created for the same application. Glazed ceramic tile resists stains, odors and dirt and can be cleaned with a damp mop or common household cleaners. This means you can enjoy the gorgeous beauty of your flooring for decades or even a lifetime. Faux wood tile is a perfect combination of wood and tile, offering good looks and functional benefits. You can use this versatile flooring material anywhere—indoors or out. Wood can fade when exposed to too much sunlight and warp when exposed to too much moisture. If you were hoping for hardwood in the kitchen or bathroom, you may find that desire short lived as wood and water don’t mix well. Wood-look tile can go just about anywhere, including in the shower and outdoors-where wood just doesn’t cut it. It actually repels liquid, eliminating problems with staining, mold, and warping. If you wish to create texture and imply a beautiful wooden touch in your bathroom or kitchen, consider placing faux wood tile as an alternative to hardwood floors. While standard square tile sizes will always have their place in home décor, rectangular ones – otherwise known as planks — are gaining popularity. New 12-by-24-inch tiles are an excellent choice in bathrooms and 6-by-36-inch tiles or 8-inch by 8-feet planks (often in wood-grained looks) are a favorite for living areas. Using longer planks can help smaller spaces look larger, and create an appealing consistency across multiple rooms.

Faux wood tile now comes in a variety of colors and textures offering limitless design possibilities. Due to a new inkjet technology, you can even find finishes you cannot find in the wood flooring market. For instance, everyone loves the look of reclaimed wood. However, since reclaimed wood is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners, it’s no easy task finding a perfect piece. Even if you find one, the price may be quite expensive. Thus, remodeling experts will recommend faux wood tile, as it can give you the authentic beauty of reclaimed wood without breaking the bank. Many designers are also driving the reclaimed wood trend across the floor and up the wall in many bedrooms and family rooms. The popularity of reclaimed wood accent walls is exploding and tile is a great way to pull off the appearance of it. One of the main benefits of the faux wood tiles is that they won’t snag your linens and upholstery the way weathered wood can and, there’s no danger of exposure to old lead paint or toxins from wood pallets. It’s a healthy alternative to fashion. Lastly, when making your final decision in flooring please consider sustainability. It is another significant reason to consider these beautifully crafted faux wood tiles for your home. Nearly 20 million trees are cut down each year and are utilized for home construction and flooring. What is a tween’s ideal place to go to on summer vacation?

Nerf guns are always popular. We like to play with them, especially boys. But, there is another brand of toy that we also really like and that is Lego. The Lego Dimensions Starter Pack will keep us busy on Christmas morning. We love Lego!

After talking at recess, my friends and I all think that the number one place that all tweens love to go to is Disneyworld. All of the rides, restaurants, characters and fireworks make it super fun. Disneyworld is for the whole family with their theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs, which is Disney’s big downtown shopping district with restaurants. My favorite park is Magic Kingdom with the rollercoasters and parades. Others in my family like Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. But, for the kids, it’s Magic Kingdom that is the favorite! Another place that we all want to see is Hawaii. I have never been but would like to go. One of my friends from school went last summer and loved it. All of the beaches and different islands… We watch the show “Hawaii 5-0” and so are a little familiar with Hawaii’s landmarks and beaches. I think surf lessons would be cool with the huge waves and clear waters. Honolulu is a city in the middle of the ocean on a floating rock! Maui also seems like a really cool place. The final place that kids would like to go is San Francisco. I have been before and it is awesome. The cable car museum shows you all of the different cable car lines and their power sources. And, Alcatraz is really cool. We saw all of the parts of the former prison and took a boat across the bay to get there. One of my favorite stops was the Ghirardelli factory. We got a really delicious sundae and it came with a bunch of chocolate squares that the Ghirardelli Company makes. It was really fun. So, if you are looking for a great place to travel to with a tween -- Disney World, Hawaii and San Francisco should do the trick!

SOLIS BETANCOURT & SHERRILL José Solís Betancourt has had a lifelong interest in art and architecture. Growing up in San Juan, Puerto Rico, he dedicated his spare time to drawing and painting, developing skills that would serve him well as an architecture student at Cornell University. He gained further design experience at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and at the Saladino Group, Inc. He established his own firm in 1990. Paul Morgan Sherrill, a native of North Carolina, was greatly influenced by his grandparents who were painters and weavers. These influences led him to study art and design throughout his youth. He graduated with Honors from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human and Environmental Sciences and a degree in Art. Paul joined Solís Betancourt & Sherrill in 1992.

Over its twenty-four years in business, Solís Betancourt & Sherrill has gained international recognition as one of the leading American design firms. GREAT IRISH DRAMATISTS: 3-SESSION EVENING COURSE How could a country as small as Ireland produce some of the greatest playwrights? The Emerald Isle’s myth, history, and culture are among the world’s richest. It is a land that has inspired poets, writers, and dreamers over the centuries, according to Christopher Griffin, who highlights the works of some of its great dramatists in an engaging course. A fitting centerpiece to the series is the chance to enjoy the words as they were meant to be heard—spoken out loud—through film clips, readings, and, as a delightful bonus, in Griffin’s native Irish brogue. Griffin, a study leader for Smithsonian Journeys, has taught Irish literature at George Washington University and is an instructor at Politics and Prose. Inspired by the owner’s love of midcentury modern design, Allie Mann, designer and senior interiors specialist at Case Design/Remodeling, Inc., www.casedesign.com, worked closely with the Virginia homeowner to turn a dated basement into a modern lower level with seethrough wine cellar and exotic wood-accented media room. “Our client, a wine enthusiast, wanted to transform his underwhelming basement into a show-stopping, lower level wine lounge,” Mann said. “Spending just over a year in design, we were able to sort out all the specific details for his space.” Mann began the dramatic remodel by eliminating walls between spaces to give it the open feel the owner wanted. With walls down and the discovery of a supporting column previously hidden in a central closet, the designer had to come up with a solution to make the pole blend into the new open plan. The result: a tasting table just outside the room’s transparent Canadian wine system, Vin De Garde, which provides both temperature and humidity control for up to 240 bottles of wine. The tasting table and “jewel box” wine room set the stage for the rest of the new lower level. The design team, including the homeowner, selected Figured Sapele as the exotic wood finish for not only the back wall of the wine room, but also as the backdrop for the TV wall in the media room, behind the floating shelves in the desk area, and also wrapping the column of the tasting table. “Attention to detail is a critical element in any design.” Mann adds. “Whether you’re transforming your basement into a wine cellar or a game room, think though the elements you want to bring into the space, including color selection.” In this case, the owners had a wonderful collection of modern furniture that worked perfectly in the media room. To finish the wine lounge aesthetic, Mann also incorporated porcelain floor tiles and steel cable railing along the new cherry staircase leading to the upper level, complementing the rest of the contemporary home. And, to top off this dramatic makeover, the wine lover’s lounge was selected as a finalist in HGTV’s 2015 Fresh Faces of Design competition in the Design With A Passion category.

Foodie CHICKEN CHILI WITH CANNELLINI BEANS SERVINGS: 6 1 pound skinless, boneless chicken thighs, cut into 1” pieces Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper ¼ cup olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 poblano chile, seeds removed, chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano 2 teaspoons ground cumin 4 cups chicken broth 2 15-oz. cans cannellini (white kidney) beans 1 bay leaf 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice Sour cream, cilantro, and lime wedges (for serving) Season chicken all over with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a Dutch oven or small stockpot over medium-high heat. Working in batches as needed, add chicken and cook, turning occasionally, until browned all over, 10–15 minutes. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Add onion and poblano chile and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring often, until onion is softened and translucent, 8–10 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add oregano and cumin and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add chicken broth, beans and their liquid, bay leaf and chicken and bring to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper and cook, partially covered, stirring occasionally, until meat is cooked through and tender and liquid is slightly thickened, 30–35 minutes. Season with lime juice and more salt and pepper. Serve with sour cream, cilantro, and lime wedges.

SLOW-ROASTED CHAR WITH FENNEL SALAD SERVINGS: 6 ½ cup unseasoned rice vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon caraway seeds 2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more 6 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 small fennel bulb, thinly sliced on a mandoline, divided 1¼ pounds arctic char or salmon fillet 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided Freshly ground black pepper 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon chopped preserved lemon peel ½ cup dill fronds

Meanwhile, place char in a 2- or 3-qt. baking dish and coat with 1 Tbsp. oil; season with salt and pepper. Roast until flesh easily flakes apart and a paring knife inserted into fish meets no resistance, 15–18 minutes. 
 Drain fennel mixture; discard liquid. Toss in a small bowl with lemon juice, preserved lemon, remaining 3 Tbsp. oil, and remaining fennel; season with salt and pepper. Mix in dill.
 Serve char topped with fennel salad.

JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE AND ARUGULA SALAD WITH PARMESAN SERVINGS: 6 2 tablespoons orange juice 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 pound Jerusalem artichokes, trimmed, peeled, thinly sliced 1 5-ounce bag arugula 2 ounces Parmesan cheese, shaved Whisk orange juice, vinegar, and mustard in small bowl to blend. Gradually whisk in oil. Season vinaigrette to taste with salt and pepper. DO AHEAD Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Combine Jerusalem artichokes, arugula, and Parmesan in large bowl. Drizzle with vinaigrette and toss to coat. Divide among 6 plates and serve.

SPICY ORANGE HAZELNUT CHOCOLATE BARK SERVINGS:8 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest ½ cup toasted hazelnuts, coarsely chopped Flaky sea salt Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use a silicone baking mat. Melt chocolate over simmering water in a double boiler; alternatively, place it in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave and heat in 30-second bursts until melted. Stir cayenne, orange zest, and about three-quarters of nuts into chocolate. Using an offset spatula or the back of a spoon, spread chocolate mixture on the prepared sheet. Sprinkle with remaining nuts and flaky salt. Refrigerate until firm, 15–20 minutes. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Preheat oven to 300°. Bring vinegar, sugar, caraway seeds, 2 tsp. salt, and cup water in a small saucepan to a simmer over medium heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and add garlic. Let sit until garlic is slightly softened, 10–15 minutes.
 Add half of fennel and toss to coat. Let sit until fennel softens slightly and tastes pickled, 8–10 minutes.

Here we are…in the dead of winter. The holidays have passed and the New Year has been rung in. For some of us, those damn bells ring a little too loudly! Reminders are everywhere of what we’ve checked off on our to-do list and what still sits in “the other column”. Vibrantly lit trees have been taken down along with all of the holiday decorations that only a few short weeks ago we were excited to put up. Do you have health goals for 2016? Career goals? Perhaps your goal is specific, like losing 20 pounds or getting a promotion. Maybe, it’s to “just have more peace” or have more energy. Look at 2016 as a time to shed all that is no longer serving you and as a time to commit to things that will have you living out the best version of yourself. Read on for answers to some of your most worrisome health hacker traps and we will help you navigate over the river, through the woods, and into a Spring that leaves you feeling rooted and blossoming in the most colorful version of yourself. Pre-holiday snowfall can foster feelings of coziness and traditions. Those same flakes falling after January 1 can translate into cabin fever, too much nibbling, and lack of exercise. So, when the roads are a mess, the days seem long and dark, airports are closed, and the kids are home due to weather, here’s how you can keep your sanity and your waistline in check.

Q: WHY DO I FEEL SO DRAINED FROM THE HOLIDAYS AND WHAT CAN I DO TO GET MY ENERGY BACK? A: That post-holiday, bummed out feeling is real for so many of us! It’s one part lack of sunshine, one part mad sugar cravings and one part plain old exhaustion. We know that Vitamin D (technically a hormone) is the sunshine vitamin and while there may be plenty of sunny days, there isn’t plenty of skin exposure. The liver’s inability to convert sunshine on our skin into this crucial “vitamin” results in tiredness, lowered immunity, and even mental fogginess. Like we need more of that, right? Did you know that most people are highly depleted of this vitamin, and that by supplementing Vitamin D, you can feel drastically better? Perhaps the New Year is a great time to schedule a visit with your physician and have that number checked. Good quality supplements matter here and liquid Vitamin D is a highly absorbable version for most. Consult your physician for optimizing your D levels because once elevated levels are reached (usually in 3-6 months) you should feel like a new person! Q: WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD, OR I’M HOME WITH THE KIDS, WHAT CAN I DO IN MY HOME TO STAY FIT? I DON’T HAVE IN HOME GYM EQUIPMENT AND WIND UP FEELING FRUSTRATED WITHOUT EXERCISE. A: We hear you! Being too sedentary for too many days in a row makes us super crabby too! If you can get there, try a hot yoga class. It feels amazing to walk out of the cold and into a warm and toasty studio. Find a local studio and check out what classes are best for you. Even if you live in a small apartment, your kitchen floor can be just what the doctor ordered to combat cabin fever. Experiment with things like planks, side planks, lunges, squats, and stretches. You’ll be surprised at how your abs are not nearly as buried by the winter snow as you think they are. These types of exercises are super strengthening and when done correctly, slim and tone in all the right places, Gorgeous! Fitness magazines and online sources are brimming with sections on how to do these poses properly and prevent injury. And, if that’s not your cup of tea, then maybe you just bundle up with extra warm hats and gloves, and take a nice quiet walk in the snow on a trail near your home or through your neighborhood. Not only will you burn more calories wearing heavy clothes and boots, you’ll shed a good amount of stress and the crisp, cold air will awaken you senses!

Q: I LOVE TO BAKE, BUT I ALWAYS END UP EATING TOO MANY COOKIES AND CAKES AFTERWARDS. WHAT ARE GOOD RECIPE IDEAS AND FOOD SWAPS THAT CAN HELP ME TO STAY ON TRACK? A: For many, baking is synonymous with being in a toasty home on a cold wintry day! Sugar is a beast and it doesn’t take much for us to become addicted to it. Remember, willpower takes a back seat to biology and even with the best intentions, sugar cravings will have willpower bound and gagged! To crave less sugar, you must eat less sugar. You also need to stay hydrated and don’t get tricked

into thinking “gluten- free” or “raw” means low calorie or low sugar. Below is a healthier twist on an oldie but goodie as well as a few party platter ideas that will help to save waistlines all across America!

Here’s a twist on the Nestle Tollhouse Cookie recipe that uses less sugar, gluten free flour and replaces some of the butter with coconut oil, which is a heart healthy and cholesterol lowering plant based fat. 2¼ cups Gluten free baking flour (I like Namaste brand) 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1 stick softened butter and ½ cup soft coconut oil (replaces the all butter version and adds very healthy fat) ½ cup granulated sugar (down from the original of ¾ c) ½ cup gently packed brown sugar (also down from ¾ C) 2 large eggs 1 tsp vanilla Optional add-ins can be nothing, chocolate chips, pistachios, walnuts but don’t let dried fruit fool you. It’s high in sugar! PREHEAT oven to 375° F. COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. BAKE for 9 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Ovens vary and gluten free dough is different so check once or twice.

5 YEAR- END FINANCIAL PLANNING STRATEGIES THAT YOU SHOULD BE CONSIDERING THROUGHOUT 2016 by Marc Schliefer

Another year has come to an end. As we begin the New Year, it is important to financially plan ahead so as to not get caught out next December in a squeeze for time. There are things that you should be looking to do to make sure that your financial life is moving in the right direction. The first thing to do is to try to maximize your retirement planning options, which includes maximizing your 401K plans and any catch-up contribution options that you are able to take advantage of. If you are over age 50, you can add an additional $6000 per year to your 401K. The total that you can contribute is $18,000 for anyone and $24,000 if you are over age 50. This is in addition to whatever match that your employer contributes for you. A lot of people who have the ability

to maximize their contribution sometimes fall short; we recommend that most people should contribute the maximum if your cash flow allows you to. It can help you build up a large retirement portfolio and help you with current tax reductions for the current year. If you are contributing to an IRA or Roth IRA you can contribute $5,500 per year. You need to check with your tax preparer to make sure that you are eligible. There are some income limits that keep you from deducting your IRA and also from making a Roth IRA contribution. If you are over age 50, you can add an additional $1000 as a catch up amount to the IRA or Roth IRA. The next thing is to make any charitable contributions before the end of the year. If you are inclined to make charitable donations, now is a good time to do that before the year end. It should help most people, although some people with Alternative Minimum Tax issues may not be able to use the full deductions. You need to check with your tax preparer to see how it can help your individual tax scenario. If you will have more income this year than last year, it would be a good idea to pay estimated state income taxes. The reason for this is that state income taxes are deductible against your federal taxes unless you fall under alternative minimum tax rules. I would run this by your tax professional. If you are going to owe more in state taxes anyway, you may as well save on federal taxes by paying them earlier. Explore the option of converting your IRA to a Roth IRA. If your income falls into the range where you can take advantage of a Roth IRA, you should consider converting some of your IRA to a Roth IRA account. Traditional IRA owners should consider the tax ramifications, age, and income restrictions in regards to executing a conversion from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. The converted amount is generally subject to income taxation. You will be paying taxes on the portion that you convert, but if the rules stay as they are for Roth IRA’s, you may never pay taxes on that pool of money again. You may also want to see if your employer has a Roth option with your 401K and you may want to allocate some of your 401K contribution to a Roth 401K. I hope these strategies help you with your yearend tax planning. FLASHBAND THE WASHINGTON POST In October, according to the digital-measurement firm comScore, The Washington Post had more online readers than the New York Times. Since Amazon founder Jeff Bezos bought the Post in 2013, he’s made clear that he wants the paper, which its former owners, the Graham family, saw as mainly a hometown read, to replace the Times as the nation’s—and perhaps the English-speaking world’s— newspaper. To the extent that the Grahams competed nationally, it was via blue-chip coverage aimed at East Coast elites—politics, mostly. From Seattle, where Bezos schemes every day to dominate digital commerce, it looks more like total war: claiming as many readers as the Post can. (Washingtonian)

RIPLEY DISTRICT A 360-unit, 200-foot-tall apartment project in downtown Silver Spring’s Ripley District received three key approvals from the Montgomery County Planning Board for the sketch plan amendment, preliminary plan and site plan for Ripley East, the apartment project from Diamondback Investors at Georgia Avenue and Bonifant Street. The building will rise to 200 feet facing Bonifant Street and step down to about 175 feet facing Georgia Avenue. The Purple Line light-rail will run along Bonifant Street just a few feet from the building’s curb, putting the project in between the Silver Spring Transit Center and Silver Spring Library stations. DC HOME SALES A new report reveals that about one of every two home sales in the DC zip code that includes West End and portions of Foggy Bottom was an all-cash transaction in 2015. Specifically, 47 percent of the sales in 20037 were all-cash deals, which amounts to 96 transactions. The total sales volume for the zip code was just north of $155 million and, the average days on market for the zip code fell just over 30 percent since last year. Following 20037 with the highest volume of cash transactions are zip codes that encompass Silver Spring and Hyattsville, as well as those that include Congress Heights and Georgetown. (Urban Turf)

VDOT VDOT has a new plan for High Occupancy Toll lanes on I-395. The news comes nearly five years after the state scrapped plans to build HOT lanes on I-395, following a legal battle with Arlington County. In a lawsuit, the county argued that HOT lanes, as then planned, would exacerbate pollution from and congestion on I-395, negatively impacting Arlington residents. (Arlington Now) 40

Back in 2012, Neal Humphrey was in a bluegrass band that started breaking up as its members left to pursue graduate school, different career paths, or they moved to different stages in life. Unhappy with the possibilities Craigslist offered in finding new musicians with whom to play, he believed there was a better way. The result is social media site Flashband, a mechanism through which musicians looking for collaborators can come together, write material, and then perform them in short order at one-off showcases staged by the organization itself. The first event also took place in 2012 at a group house in Columbia Heights and featured 30 artists divided into seven bands. (dcist)
