WELCOME
SEASON’S GREETINGS! Fall has arrived and the holiday season begins. The amazing colors of fall beautifully begin the season. And, if you’re like me, your day is brightened by the aromas of freshly baked pies, homemade cinnamon rolls, crackling fires and freshly cut pine. There is nothing better than the scent and sight of a “live” Christmas tree in your home. All these things signify a joyous and wonderful time of year. It’s also a time to help those less fortunate and in need of understanding and assistance. I’ve spoken about this many times in my “Editor’s Letter.” I can’t underscore the importance of helping those in need. It’s good for the soul and it contributes to making our region a better place to live, work and play for all of us. This time of year I hope you commit to offer your time and resources to one or two of the amazing charities in need. There are so many great charitable organizations in Virginia, Maryland and DC that do amazing work. Several suggestions are offered in “John’s Favorites.” I hope you are able to venture out, see and experience our beautiful city this time of year. There are amazing things to see and do around every corner. The White House Christmas tree and Menorah and the Capital Christmas tree are a few of the amazing offerings. It’s a great time to take in the beauty of the monuments and museums, which we often take for granted. Take a stroll down Bethesda Row or through the streets of Clarendon, the holiday spirit is on full display. Now it’s time for me to say ‘thank you”. First up, I want to thank our amazing readers. This is a labor of love and we hope it shows. We do try to bring you, our readers, the very best in each issue. Thank you to the committed staff of John Eric Home, Hillary Broadwater and Angela Casey. They work tirelessly all year and John Eric Home would not happen without their dedication and creative spirit. I’m humbled by their commitment. Our contributors are truly the best. Their insightful, fun and amazing work is featured in each addition of the magazine. I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and hard work and for their friendship and support. I wish you and your family the best this holiday season and I hope it’s filled with much happiness and joy. See you in 2016! Enjoy,

Great Escape HOLIDAYS
The holiday season is upon us! It’s time to cram in the cranberry sauce, jangle the jingle bells and supervise the snowman building in the backyard. But, what if you want a great escape? A once-in-a-lifetime celebration with your family, or possibly on your own? This month, “Destinations” takes a holiday of its own by not focusing on one amazing travel destination. Rather, we present you five. The top Destinations that exemplify the holiday spirit and will leave you full of cheer.

5. LAPLAND, FINLAND Instead of visions of sugarplums – try dreaming of
Lapland – possibly the closest that you can get to the North Pole without leaving a continent. With vast expanses of white wonderland, dotted with stoic reindeer pulling sleds, visitors wonder if Santa Claus will drop by to share a cup of cocoa (or Koskenkorva Viina!) If he doesn’t happen to stop in, you can always organize a visit for your children to see St. Nick as specialist tour operators offer private meetings with Father Christmas. Many Christmas-themed packages offer a variety of snow-based activities (sleigh rides, snowmobiling). For a North Pole celebration head to Finland but be sure to bundle up – its cold!
4. AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS The Dutch capital comes alive during the holidays as
16th and 17th-century houses are strung with lights in early December. Visitors find men in red suits crossing canal bridges, passing by shops decorated in twinkling lights. Bells ring throughout the city as cyclists ride by with baskets full of shopping bags. Cafes offer amazing treats only served at Christmas, such as ‘banketstaaf’ -- a traditional holiday pastry; ‘kruidnoten’ -- tiny rounded cookies spiced with ginger, cinnamon, white pepper, cardamom, cloves and nutmeg; and Jan Hagel cookies – little gems with a hint of cinnamon, almond slivers and candied sugar. Delicious! If you are seeking a jolly holiday celebration, make sure to put Amsterdam at the top of your list.

3. EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND UK There is something about the Scottish cap-
ital that is truly special during the holiday season. It might be carolers standing on the corner bringing that special cheer to all within earshot. Or, the bagpipes that play “Amazing Grace” around the Sir Walter Scott Monument. Maybe, it’s the holiday lightshow that illuminates Edinburgh Castle and makes your heart skip a beat. Or, its shops-- from the large department store Jenners to the mini-boutiques lining the Royal Mile -- all dressed up in holiday splendor. It is probably all of the above and for capturing the magic of Christmas, that Edinburgh makes our list.
2. PUERTO RICO, USA For those who want to warm up during the
holiday season, take the flight to San Juan and enjoy the relaxing pace of the island. Drink a coquito on the beach or salsa to Jingle Bells. Instead of gazing at snowtopped evergreens, let palm trees occupy your field of vision. And, breathe. Both natives and visitors enjoy Christmas concerts and carnivals spread throughout the island. It is always fun to amble through Old San Juan, decorated for the season, and grab an espresso at one of its sidewalk cafes. If you seek an island celebration full of flair and relaxation then look no further then Puerto Rico. Feliz Navidad!

1. NEW YORK CITY, USA New York is so special during the holiday
season. It’s not just that there is so much to do – like catching The Nutcracker at The Metropolitan or the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, eating in some of the best restaurants on the planet and shopping from one end of Manhattan to the other with great glee. Or, could it just be that the city is decorated for the season – with the tower of oversized red, Christmas ornaments on 6th Avenue and a giant, white snowflake dangling over 5th. Or, viewing the top of the Empire State Building, shining in red and green, while down the street a little way, late visitors stand in line to catch the world renowned Saks Fifth Avenue Christmas Window parade or, possibly gazing upon the massive tree in Rockefeller Center, complete with ice skaters underneath. It’s just that the entire city buzzes. No matter whether you are uptown, midtown or downtown, New York’s gritty streets transform, in their own way, into its own Winter Wonderland. Enjoy the smell of steamed chestnuts wafting through the
air as shoppers briskly walk down crowded streets weighed down by bags full of gifts. The hubbub in Chelsea Market creates its own excitement as Foodies stock up on provisions for their annual parties. The city moves with a dynamism that happens at Christmas and is unparalleled by any other. It is because of this buzz – this je ne sais quoi – that we rank New York City as one of the best holiday travel destinations.

John’s Favorites
E PLURIBUS UNUM! This holiday season as you gather with family and friends to celebrate, I hope you take time to remember others in need. Helping worthy charities should be a year round commitment. The holiday season is a special time to recommit to donating to worthy charities that help so many people and pets in our region. Here are but a few of my favorites. I encourage you to support these amazing charities or one that is near and dear to your own heart.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS This is an amazing organization that works tirelessly in DC and around the country to assist disadvantaged women achieve economic independence by providing them with professional attire to obtain and maintain a job through a rock solid support system and career development tools. I can’t think of more worthy endeavor than to help women empower themselves. As my mom has always said, the best man for the job is usually a woman! washingtondc.dressforsuccess.org
CITY DOGS RESCUE
This is one organization I support generously. There is no greater gift you can give another human being to better their own life than that of an education. It can be a fouryear degree or a trade school. The Point Foundation specializes in assisting GLBT youth in obtaining an education. Many of these students come from homes where they experienced great hardships, violence and even abandonment. I’m a big believer in a hand up and this organization does it in spades.
There are so many great rescue groups in our area worthy of support. They all fill an important and much needed job of helping homeless pets find caring, loving and forever homes. City Dogs Rescue is near and dear to my family’s heart as our beautiful daughter, Adele, was saved by this amazing group from a kill shelter in North Carolina. I’ve talked a great deal about the importance of adopting pets from organizations like City Dogs Rescue. You truly never know unconditional love until you save a homeless pet.

THE POINT FOUNDATION
DC CENTRAL KITCHEN These words are front and center on their website and I couldn’t have said it better myself. “Combating Hunger, Creating Opportunity! DC Central Kitchen is America’s leader in reducing hunger with recycled food, training unemployed adults for culinary careers, serving healthy school meals, and rebuilding urban food systems through social enterprise.” This organization’s commitment to our community, along with other organizations, like the Arlington Food Assistance Center, Manna Food Center in Montgomery County and Food For Others in Fairfax County, and to helping those in need is a strong reminder that we all have a part in making our community a better place for everyone. www.dccentralkitchen.org

H ome for the H olidays
2015 DECORATING by David Brown
It’s home for the holidays, 2015. Your personal retreat is your individual expression of you and your cultureregardless of how you celebrate the season. The memories you make are the visions you and your loved ones will cherish for a lifetime. I am so grateful for the many rich and vivid past experiences my parents, grandparents and husband have created for me over the years. It’s that warm, cozy feeling that your home exudes that creates those thoughts we all carry so deep in our heart. From the fragrant evergreen garland to the glow of the candles from across the dining room, you are creating a holiday like no other—whether for you, or someone special in your life. So climb up into the attic, dig through the garage and make MAGIC! Let’s deck the halls! The focal point of many homes around the world is the Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is sometimes explained as a Christianization of pagan tradition and a ritual surrounding the winter solstice. The Englishlanguage phrase “Christmas tree” is first recorded in 1835 and represents an importation from the German language.
20
JOHN ERIC HOME
A truly successful Christmas tree is accomplished by creating a balance of mixed bedazzled balls and vintage-style pieces. Often the colors red and gold are utilized in decorating the classic Christmas tree, but this can easily be kicked up a notch by adding a frosty blue accent or other variations. Instead of going for an overly coordinated tree, perhaps mix and match new and vintage decorations in a variety of shapes, sizes and saturated hues to achieve a playful feel — the more color, the merrier! A mix of magenta, silver and cool turquoise adds another shot of color that can’t be ignored in any home. This daring palette pops perfectly against any home’s interior but looks especially remarkable against a handsome grey interior. Lastly, during the holidays, I like to include a few live miniature trees throughout the house. You can find them at any corner store and make them special by placing them on a velvet remnant and tying it up with a bow or just painting a few terracotta pots your favorite metallic color and drop them in. It’s that easy! Over the years, popular Christmas plants have included holly, mistletoe, ivy, poinsettia and
paper whites. The interiors of our homes are adorned with these plants in addition to garlands and evergreen foliage. These swags are often decorated with small ornaments attached to their the delicate branches and often are accented with a small light set. We cannot forget the wreaths! They can be made from real or artificial conifer branches, broadleaf evergreens or holly. One of my favorite holiday wreath ideas is to “mirror” your wreaths inside and outside. Make certain you hang a fir wreath on the outside and inside of your door. Make certain it is very simple in style. This keeps continuity and flow from the outside in. It also keeps that fresh scent of pine moving through your home. As with fashion, holiday decorating trends come and go. I always prefer to stay classic or minimalist, while others chose the alternative route. Here are just a few holiday decorating trends you should anticipate seeing this season. I will leave the styling up to you. Christmas past is making an appearance in a big way. The 1920s-inspired holiday décor offers glittery Art Deco ornaments and star garlands, as well as Deco-patterned, mercury-glass hurricanes in silver and midnight blue. Elegant gold blown-glass animals also fit into this vibe. There will be ornaments encrusted with sequins or glass mosaics. Beaded metallic pillars, champagne glasses and bottles, and chevron-patterned pendants will add to this Jazz Age style. If the Deco style doesn’t add a glimmer to your eye, be on the look out for an updated city sparkle design. There are so many decorations appearing in deep, rich hues of sapphire, deep emerald and sexy violet. The real wow factor rolls in with the metallic touches. There is a unique juxtaposition that happens when you mix the sophisticated richness of jewel tones and the medley of copper patina and copper shine. A love for the outdoors continues to be a trend for Christmas 2015. We will once again see a return visit from the forest and all the camping critters that come with it. Woodland creatures populate the ornament collections that include felt foxes, deer, raccoons and bears sporting festive scarves and plaid coats. Look also for style-evoking European folk art designs. Clever ornaments made of glossy red or galvanized metal to resemble vintage tubs also make an appearance. Lastly, LED lighting is everywhere this season and on just about everything, including holiday décor. There are beautiful lighted garlands of pierced gold balls fitted with LEDs, and bright red tree mats that have built-in LEDs. Don’t miss all the unique LED light sets available for all your DIY outdoor light styling. There are twinkles, showers, shimmers and glows at the touch of a button. If you prefer a more elegant look, opt for clusters of string lights under gorgeous glass cloches. I thought I would leave you with one last thought. Have you ever wondered what your holiday decorating style says

Home Trends
about you? The Huffington Post recently published an article opining on such. Here are a few of their suggestions. Merry Christmas! • Solid Christmas Ornaments: You are a purist. You prefer your cocktails neat, curse the person who thought up the blinking Christmas lights and generally don’t need a lot of fussiness to rock your world. You’re also a firm believer in the versatility of the LBD and use the term “classic” -- a lot. • Vintage Ornaments: You’ve had Johnny Mathis’ Christmas album on repeat since Thanksgiving, must have your egg nog with, well, eggs and have made a name for yourself on Instagram for posting the most epic #TBT pics. • Gingerbread Houses: You’re sweet and nostalgic and if you’ve learned anything from Martha Stewart, it’s that you’re not a legitimate human being without a tube of royal icing on hand. Come January, when those 2016 diets/fasts/healthy-eating regimens kick off, you’ll pass -thank you very much. • Paper Chains: You were the kid who needed their artwork front and center on the fridge, and can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend morning than catching up on all the magazines you still subscribe to. You still aren’t sold on this whole “tablet edition” thing, you own stationery with your name on it (because actual letter-writing IS going to make a comeback). • Old School Bulbs: You think all-white lights are the anti-Christmas, can recite that leg lamp scene in “The Christmas Story” from memory, and you’re probably hoarding incandescent light bulbs as we speak. • Fresh Cut Trees: Smelling good is of the utmost importance to you as is the experience of the holidays. (No time-shaving, money-saving shortcuts here.) Your tree choice also means you probably got a pretty nice bonus this year, which you’ll need to use to hire someone to clean up all those pine needles you’ll otherwise be vacuuming up until June. • Tinsel Tree: You’re probably dreaming of a white Christmas, are liable to be drinking your New Year’s Eve bubbly from a champagne coup and claim full ownership of the phrase “Party over here!” Your favorite family movie is “Sparkle” and you’ve definitely bought a home furnishing items from Urban Outfitters in your day. • Inflatables: In short: You’ve been living in the suburbs for too long or watched “Deck The Halls” too many times. • Advent Calendars: For you, the holidays are all about the build up. Christmas isn’t just one day.

LAST MINUTE DECORATING TIPS: 1. Edit! Move, remove, store and tuck away many of your favorite everyday accessories to make room for your holiday cheer. Layering in your décor only creates a less cohesive vision and makes for more clutter than you can imagine. 2. If you are opting for a less-is-more approach this year, strategically place red, green and silver accents throughout your home for an updated holiday feel. You don’t have to break the bank -- try incorporating pieces that are interchangeable with your regular decor like throw pillows or blankets. However, make certain you remove your other pillows and throws first. 3. Create a holiday music play list that you and your guests will love. Don’t forget to add in some of the “campy classics.” Music is one of the quickest ways to get your guests in a festive mood. 4. Incorporate holiday photos from years’ past for a personal touch. 5. Add a dimmer switch in the dining room to create seasonal lighting. Dimmer switches can save you money on electricity and are a simple trick for enhancing the seasonal mood of dinner parties. 6. There’s nothing more inviting than a sweet-smelling home. Use holiday scents like cinnamon, pine and butter cream to create a cozy atmosphere that will keep your family and guests alike feeling right at home.
Kids Corner
What Kids Want
FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Kids want all kinds of things for the holidays. But, there are certain presents that most of us agree on. I have talked to my friends at recess and asked them what they would like this year and here are their answers. We would all like to unwrap the box, open it up and start playing with it. So, if you are wondering what to buy a ‘tween in your life, here are a few suggestions.
Nerf guns are always popular. We like to play with them, especially boys. But, there is another brand of toy that we also really like and that is Lego. The Lego Dimensions Starter Pack will keep us busy on Christmas morning. We love Lego! We also love Star Wars. My friends and I are excited about the new Star Wars movie coming out during the holidays. I can’t wait to see it. I also can’t wait to see if I will be unwrapping the Star Wars R2D2 Interactive Robotic Droid. That would be very cool too! I like to golf and one of my friends who golfs with me is asking her Mom and Dad for a new pair of golf clubs this year. Golf clubs are great because golfing is a great hobby. Depending on style, they are available through a lot of different companies. Check them out! Finally, what everyone (including me!) really wants for the holidays is the iPhone 6. If you want to make a ‘tween on your list really happy, this is the way to go. NOV | DEC 2015

WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL Enjoy the masterpiece of Handel’s Messiah. This Holiday classic is performed by the Baroque–period orchestra and guest soloists, joining the Cathedral’s combined boy, girl and men’s choirs. First performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742, its London premiere was nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception, the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. Handel wrote Messiah for modest vocal and instrumental forces, with optional settings for many of the individual numbers. In the years after his death, the work was adapted for performance on a much larger scale, with giant orchestras and choirs. In other efforts to update it, its orchestration was revised and amplified by (among others) Mozart. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the trend has been toward reproducing a greater fidelity to Handel’s original intentions, although “big Messiah” productions continue to be mounted. 3101 Wisconsin Ave., NW December 4th - 5th | 4 p.m. Tickets: $25-$95

SIX SUGGESTIONS FOR SETTING A FESTIVE TABLE 1. Candles set the stage for a festive atmosphere overall and add a touch of intimacy. 2. Metallics such as mercury glass used for gold mint julep cups and high and low candlesticks offer a reflective element within the setting. 3. Textures make the space interesting. Try mixing greens, dried artichokes and pomegranates, for instance, that layer colorful items together. Layering of items is key.
4. Themes or specific colors and items allow the hostess to incorporate favorite placemats and napkins. 5. Seating from other areas of the home may need to be pulled into the space to accommodate guests for larger gatherings. To make them festive, consider hanging a small wreath on each chair, either draped over the back or hung by a rope or ribbon. Also consider tying name tags on each chair. 6. Music also sets the mood. While candles offer ambient lighting and flowers and foods offer the aromas, music adds that final touch.

DC Fun Facts
I
n Germany, there is a folklore tradition based on the idea that nutcrackers protect your family and bring your home good luck. For this reason, nutcrackers were often given to children at Christmastime.
1.
The Nutcracker first premiered on December 17, 1892, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
2.
At the first performance of The Nutcracker, children played the roles of Clara and the Nutcracker Prince. In later professional productions, these roles were given to adult dancers.
3.
The story of the Nutcracker is based on a book written by E.T.A. Hoffman titled “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” The music of The Nutcracker Ballet was composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892.
4. It is the sound of the unique musical instrument, the celesta, that causes “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” to be unforgettable. Tchaikovsky had discovered the newlyinvented instrument just before departing for the U.S., and was immediately captivated by its “divinely beautiful tone.’’ He arranged to have one sent to Russia secretly, because he was concerned that other composers would get hold of it and use the unusual effect before him.
5.
Although Tchaikovsky’s score for The Nutcracker is one of the best-known pieces of his music, he did not feel it was his best work. The composer apparently felt that his earlier composition, the ballet Sleeping Beauty, was far superior to The Nutcracker.
6. Tchaikovsky died less than a year after the original production of The Nutcracker, never knowing the impact his work would have on audiences around the world for decades to come.
7.
Starting in the late 20th century, The Nutcracker has become arguably the most widely performed ballet in the world, with George Balanchine’s version helping spawn other adaptations.

Vineyard
HOLIDAYWine by Peter Goossens
GREETINGS FELLOW WINE LOVERS! Wine is the perfect gift for almost any occasion: it is classy, tasteful, easy to find, very portable and takes no time to giftwrap. There is no product on the market that will give you a bigger bang for your buck and, unlike another pepper and salt shaker set, one can never have too much wine in the home. The following tips should help you a little bit with your quest to find the perfect wine gift: 1. WINE FITS ANY BUDGET.NOT. The current availability of wines from all over the world, as well as outstanding US wines, makes it easy to find great wines in every possible price range. A decent wine that will impress the recipient can be found for as little as $20. Don’t shy away from South American, Australian or South African wines. These “new world” regions produce some of the best buys out there. 2. DON’T GO OVERBOARD. If you know the gift recipient’s wine taste, by all means, find a wine or vineyard that you know they enjoy. More often than not though, you will barely know more than the fact that the recipient likes wine. Don’t go overboard; it’s not because you personally like big and bold wines that they will. In this case, a middle of the road bottle might be a wise choice. Along the same lines, don’t discriminate against sweet or semi-sweet wines. In my experience, there is always somebody in the family who likes and enjoys them! 3. DARE TO BE DIFFERENT: SEEK THE ROMANCE. As I have stated before, to me, wine is fermented grape juice + romance. A large part of the romance is the story behind the wine - not just the story of the vineyard that produced the wine, but also your own personal story of where you found the wine and why you thought it was the perfect gift. Many times, the story of the vineyard will be more unique and charming if you stick to the small and medium sized family owned boutique vineyards. Large format bottles often make you stand out from the crowd, but be warned: don’t forego quality
Gifting Tips
for quantity, otherwise you will just end up with a large bottle of “cheap” wine. 4. MAKE IT MEANINGFUL. With thousands of choices on the market, you might be in luck and find something that has particular meaning to the recipient. What does this mean? For instance, the wine might be from a region they were born or where they lived. Also, a wine label might relate to their hobby or to a special memory you share. You might choose a wine from a local vineyard or a bottle from a specific year with special meaning to the recipient. 5. WHAT ABOUT THE BOSS? If you know the boss enjoys a nice glass of wine, then it is the perfect gift. Be aware, though, spending your whole budget on one bottle might not result in the recognition you are seeking. More expensive wines often have a much longer shelf life and will keep for several years so by the time your boss opens your bottle and figures out what a wine genius you are, he might no longer be your boss. Consider spreading your budget out over a couple of bottles that are ready for consumption now, so you receive the kudos you deserve immediately! 6. YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH CHAMPAGNE. Nothing is more festive than a sparkling wine. There are many choices available in a variety of price points. Around the holidays, in particular, many sparkling wines and Champagnes come in beautiful packaging, making the gift even more impressive. 7. SEEK THE HELP OF A PROFESSIONAL (THAT’S WHY THEY EXIST!) Don’t be afraid to go to a real wine store. Give the trained wine professionals as much information as you have about the person that you are gifting. The wine store wants to send you on your way with a wine that will make the recipient happy. After all, they want you as a repeat customer. Taking all this into consideration, I believe you will be able to find an appropriate wine gift for more than half of the people on your list. Plus, this one-stopshopping will leave you with just a little more time to enjoy a glass of your own special vintage. Happy Holidays, we will talk again on the other side of 2015… Cheers!

JOHN ERIC HOME
by Dr. Tatiana H. Irvin & Jeanine Finelli
Q: I ALWAYS PUT ON WEIGHT OVER THE HOLIDAYS, EVEN WHEN I TRY NOT TO. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? A: You aren’t doing anything wrong! For starters, we are animals and animals like to hibernate in the winter. They don’t want cold smoothies and summer salads. Animals naturally look for warming foods. Think soups, stews, chili (and football) oatmeal, cozy sweaters, and pumpkin lattes. Remember that what you crave in the fall/winter months is different from the detoxifying and cleansing vegetables of spring. Mother Nature sure was spot on when she put things in season for a reason, eh? The point here is that even if you stick to a healthful eating plan and exercise, you may put on 2-5 pounds simply because…well…we are animals. Q: ALL I HAD WAS TURKEY, ONE SERVING OF MASHED POTATOES, BRUSSELS SPROUTS AND A SLICE OF PIE. WHY ARE MY CLOTHES SNUG? A: With cookie parties and pot lucks…we need massive amounts of good luck, right? So many activities are food and alcohol centered and it’s typically not the isolated dinner or treat that derails us. Let’s take Thanksgiving for example. One Thursday in November. You begin baking cookies and pies up to a week before. (Nibble, nibble, nibble!) Then, on the actual day, you probably sit down to a feast as you count your blessings and are filled with gratitude. If you eat dinner early, say 3:00, then you will be poking through the kitchen around 8:00 for round two, and, we know how delicious leftovers taste! They taste so yummy and even on Friday after shopping with the crowds or online, you’re thinking that a turkey sandwich with a teeny tiny slice of pumpkin pie sure would hit the spot. There is a high probability that your plate will also runneth over into Saturday. Catch my mashed potato drift? You don’t get off easily if you aren’t hosting the dinner because you will surely be sent home with a care package. So, you see, it isn’t really the holiday itself. Just say no to dragging it out to a week before and a week after! Q: WHAT CAN I DO TO AVOID OVER EATING AT THE OFFICE PARTY? A: Here are our best go to tips for any party 1) Never go to a party hungry because the temptation is just too high. So keep your self in check! Have a low sugar high fiber protein smoothie an hour before, or something like an apple with almond butter. 16 oz. of water is great for staving off hunger and combating the effects of the extra wine you may indulge, all while keeping you hydrated. SCORE! 2) Go for things like humus and veggies over cheese and crackers, olive oil and lemon as opposed to super creamy high fat dressings. And, steer clear of punch and juices….boatloads of sugar. 3) Extra exercise the day of, be it a long jog, hot yoga or extra Zumba, releases so many endorphins and makes you feel so great that you are much less likely to undue all of your hard work. After all, nothing tastes as good as fit feels. Experience the bliss…try it!
Q: THE HOLIDAYS SEEM TO BRING NOTHING BUT THE “STRESS MESS”. HOW CAN I DEAL WITH PEOPLE I’M OBLIGATED TO SEE BUT DON’T NECESSARY DO CARTWHEELS OVER SEEING? A: This scenario is a doozie for so many of us. Let’s break it down. What do we know for sure? That all we can change is how we react to things; we cannot change the behavior of others. Sure, over time we can influence them, but if you want to start living in the now, regardless of the negative energy around you, then follow these simple suggestions because stress turns into a weaker immune system, insomnia, irritability, fuzzy thinking and belly fat, and who on Earth has time for that! 1) Have realistic expectations. She will say your soufflé isn’t as good as hers. He won’t really like your gift that you spent time choosing… he never does. She will invite her current boyfriend that makes family gatherings awkward. You will feel pressure to be at the in-laws with the children when you really want to be elsewhere. You see, the possibilities are endless and by being prepared, maybe it will sting a little less. You may even be able to realize once and for all…it is their trip…not yours. Focus on the JOY of the season and the positive that comes with it. Maybe, you show up, but for a shorter visit. Perhaps, you just can’t make it this year and you stay home with other loved ones. How about instead of hosting dinner and dessert, you just do dessert? Learning to “X out” of things that leave you feeling chewed up and spit out can actually be a great thing. Sometimes we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t….so maybe this year…you just don’t. Q: MY EXERCISE PROGRAM IS “OFF” IN THE WINTER BECAUSE I JUST CAN’T FIND TIME! WHAT SHOULD I DO? A: You aren’t alone! With such little extra time and shorter days in November and December, it makes perfect sense that you would rather fall “timber” face down in your bed. Holidays are downright exhausting and finding extra energy can be a challenge. What is so fascinating is that we always feel better when we exercise. Sure, part of us wants to watch a Lifetime movie or a ballgame instead of bundling up. However, if you commit to exercising, you will come back home with a renewed sense of self because “happy hormones” (dopamine and serotonin,) which are released after exercise, have a way of doing just that. The trick here is to turn on the tap and let if flow. In order to do that, you must get up and go, go, go! It requires falling in love with yourself so much so that you know that this is the time of year when you require physical activity the most. Find a trail to hike or bike on. Try a hot yoga class on a cold day. Hit the gym or go to a bounce and indoor trampoline place with the kids.
So now that you are prepared for the season of giving, remember to give yourself a big fat dose of Vitamin L(ove) every single day. Deep breaths and time to be alone are crucial to the fortification of you, and healthy hearts fall out of fear and into love. Blessings to you and all of those you hold close in your heart, at the holidays and always.

Your Recipe for Beauty. Un-Bottled. 40
JOHN ERIC HOME
Today, our lives are busier than ever. It seems there’s never enough time to get everything done. We make lists as a way to focus precious time and energy. We populate work cubicles and refrigerator doors with post-it notes to remind us of a call that needs to be made or a book that needs to be ordered or an oil change that needs to be scheduled. We do all we can to make sure nothing drops through the proverbial crack and that everything is taken care of with efficiency. This busy lifestyle can create a zero balance when it comes to both personal relaxation and the care of our bodies, such as our skin, hair and body. But, not to worry as there is a dynamic company that is trying to combat the rigors of daily living in one simple box. LOLI Beauty is on the scene. This firm combines both organic beauty products and the ease and convenience of a subscription service to help the consumer do something good for both their body and their mind. LOLI Beauty is not your average subscription service. It is not a company that buys other companies products, packages and sends them to you. Rather, each month, LOLI Beauty sends you fresh ingredients so that you can self-create your own products. The beauty products are freshly blended, not sitting on a shelf for months or even years. Subscribers follow provided recipes and are able to feel and smell the unique parts that create the entire composition. They treat themselves to a mini-spa treatment at home without the hassle of making yet another appointment and taking the time to go to a spa. They both relax and do something good for their bodies. Tina Hedges is the brainchild behind LOLI Beauty. “One light-bulb “LOLI” moment was when I was advising a start-up in the face oil category, and sipping on a $12 juice smoothie staring at the olive oil casks of the Filling Station in Chelsea Markets,” says Hedges. “I knew then that my mission was to launch LOLI Beauty, a kitchen for beauty-crafting that makes it easy to discover, enjoy and share beauty ingredients, recipes and rituals at home and on-line with our community of beauty-blenders.” Before starting the company, Hedges worked at Fortune 500 companies including Estee Lauder, L’Oreal and LVMH where she headed up global product innovation to launch category breakthroughs in fragrance, skincare and makeup. In 2005, Hedges joined the startup world with the record-breaking QVC launch of its first sulfate-free, vegan hair care brand, Jonathan Product, also the first brand to be launched on reality TV on Bravo’s Blowout – thus pioneering the use the reality TV as a marketing vehicle. Soon, thereafter, LOLI Beauty was born.

JOHN ERIC HOME
“My inspiration began – unknowingly -- when I was a teenager and my Cuban mother taught me some homemade beauty recipes - like steaming your face with chamomile and using honey as a mask,” says Hedges. “Years later as a beauty marketer for companies like Lauder and L’Oreal, I would collaborate in the labs with chemists to develop many of the coveted beauty products in bathroom cabinets around the world. Most of the time we would get inspiration from food trends and ingredients. For example, back in 2000, I remember finding an artisanal Fair Trade supplier of Argan oil from the Chicago Food Expo and writing a memo about how Argan oil would be a hot face, body & hair ingredient to my boss whose reaction was the incredulous statement “Argan oil – no one will put oil on their face and it will make their hair greasy!” Flash forward and several years later Argan is a common skin and hair ingredient.” Years later, the combination of stress and jet-lag from accumulated years of international travel wreaked havoc on Hedges’ sleep, hormone cycles and ultimately her skin, hair and nails. She delved into a more holistic approach to beauty wellness – including making and using her own beauty products. Today, the original impetus still remains. LOLI – Living Organic Loving Ingredients – is based on tradition and natural beauty rituals. “LOLI Beauty helps preserve and connect us to beauty rituals and remedies passed down through families or our personal network (grandmother to auntie to cousin to friend) as well as through centuries of tradition or folklore,” says Hedges. “Though some of the ingredients are easy enough to find—apples, for instance, which provide malic acid—our customers know that we have hand-gathered the purest sources from around the world — so our apple cider vinegar hair rinse also has farm harvested honey and locally grown and fermented hard apple cider. We have the expertise to know which sources are most effective for beauty treatments, knowledge built up from gathering timeless traditions and global beauty rituals. LOLI Beauty isn’t about picking up an organic lemon and a box of steel-cut oatmeal at Trader Joe’s - that’s a step in the right (cleaner, greener) direction, but anyone can do that.” LOLI Beauty is about bringing the consumer turmeric oil from India, known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antioxidant, and insecticidal benefits which will be blended with Capuacu Butter from Brazil. This blending will deliver high-performance results when creating a soothing body butter that can be used to calm a bug bite or soothe aching muscles post spinning class. LOLI sources from the best global farms and local artisanal purveyors to ensure their ingredients are pure and natural while buying fair trade and organic whenever possible. Their beauty recipes are time-tested and LOLI Beauty works with experts in aromatherapy, dermatology, integrative medicine, nutrition and research & development to ensure quality and effectiveness. Every month, the theme of the subscriber’s box changes. As does the product to be mixed and the message sent. “We believe that beauty is more than skin deep,” says Hedges, “and there is a mind + body + soul connection to the rituals of making beauty. So every month, based on the season, the nature of the ingredients we are sourcing and the recipes change — we choose an inspirational theme, for example, transformation or kindness, and create affirmations that inspire you.” Hedges and her company believe in sharing the wealth. The philosophy of her company is simple – contribute to global happiness.
“With LOLI we make beauty but we also give beauty,” says Hedges. “We believe in mindfully giving back to contribute to global Beauty Happiness. So with every LOLI Beauty parcel, we contribute $1.00 per parcel to helping free women and children from sexual slavery and wherever possible we source from Fair Trade organizations. We are also the only beauty company to be a member of madeinthefreeworld.org” The response to LOLI Beauty has been tremendous. Consumers are not only purchasing subscriptions for themselves but are gifting them to friends. And, what is Hedges’ favorite aspect of what she does? “I love getting up every day to blend ancient beauty smarts with highperformance, globally sourced natural ingredients and give customers the tools they need to greenly and cleanly customize their personal care. We have lots up our sleeve, including a plan for LOLI Beauty to have off-line experiences — like pop-ups — so women can shop for beauty the way we shop for food and ultimately ‘make beauty’ together too in a very different type of beauty retail environment. On an impact level, it makes such a difference to know that LOLI Beauty is helping in the fight against people trafficking — so as we #makebeauty together we are also making a difference in the lives of many around the world.” For the holidays, LOLI Beauty is collaborating with www. thebravecollection.com to offer an exclusive artisan-made wrap bracelet and Asian inspired LOLI beauty ingredients to support the stopping of people trafficking in Asia. This holiday beauty parcel will retail for $52.00 and be available on The Brave Collection and the LOLI Beauty website.

The holiday season is a time to shine! Whether you’re feasting at your annual Thanksgiving dinner, enjoying a quiet Hanukah event or partaking in the multitude Christmas parties and get-togethers that you will be attending – everyone wants to look their best. But, hold on a second! There is no reason to run out and buy the hottest designers and fashions of the season, stealing away from your holiday budget. This year, try a different alternative and rent the look that you want to wear. Rent the Runway is a site that rents out dresses to smart girls who don’t want to shell out big bucks for that special something to wear to events. It offers clothes from designers like Balenciaga, Clair Vivier, Moschino, Helmut Lang, Pamela Love, Eddie Borgo, and Missoni, among others. For those who want to look like a million bucks but don’t want to spend the cold, hard cash to accomplish this goal, check it out! Once you’re dressed and ready-to-go, you’ll need the perfect gift in your hand to complete the look. Or, maybe not. This year, think out-of-the-box, in a literal sense. A subscription box for someone near-and-dear will be a source of merriment. Companies like Birchbox are finding great success in offering women convenience with a click. Makeup, hair, body and skin products and fragrances arrive to the doorstep in a box. Subscriptions include five samples from a variety of beauty or grooming categories each month – from firms such as Guerlain, Japonesque and Kiehls -- tailored to the preferences in a Beauty or Grooming Profile. They are generously sized and include a product card with more details on the samples that have been chosen, as well as tips and tricks on how to make the most of each. Subscribers receive monthly offers via email to choose one of the samples for full purchase. Fashion companies, from those selling business to sporting attire, are also glomming onto this new trend. One industry leader is Fabletics. The face of Fabletics, co-founder Kate Hudson, always looks like she is having the time of her life when she’s breaking a sweat in her attire. Gym, yoga and running gear can all be chosen and automatically sent to you with no muss or fuss. You choose the items you want included every month, ensuring that you get the right fit for your choice of exercise. So, this holiday season, look great while you think-out-of-the-box!

Women aren’t the only ones benefitting from the new trend of box subscriptions – men are getting in on the action too! This holiday season, treat yourself to something that will last for months to come; a service subscription where everything from sunglasses to socks to shaving supplies automatically arrive on your doorstep. Simplify your life one website at a time! Curator and Mule is a company that makes fashion easy and affordable for today’s modern man. Its name stands for the “Curator” who scours the trends to find the best accessories each season and the “Mule” who deals with the logistics of ensuring they arrive at your doorstep safe and sound. Each season, they send out a box stuffed with 4-5 of the season’s coolest items. Before the box is shipped, they offer an “opt out” opportunity if you aren’t interested in the finds. Also, included is a tip sheet which shares how to wear your new hat, belt, socks, shades and more to always look your best. All men need to shave, especially if a five o’clock shadow is not your thing. Worry no more about always having shaving supplies on – or in – your hand. Consider a Dollar Shave Club subscription. For far less than the price of the expensive big brand names you see in stores, they’ll send you a comparable set of razors. On top of that they’ll keep you stocked by automatically sending you new ones each month so you never run out. Subscribers sign up by selecting a razor and creating an account with a shipping address and billing details. In the first order, blades and a handle arrive with subsequent monthly deliveries including a specified number of blades dependent upon membership level. You can cancel anytime and switch plans as you see fit. They also offer Dr. Carver’s and Charlies and Boogie’s product lines which include shave butters and serums. Everyone needs socks. That is just a part of life. In this arena, Zockster comes to the rescue of your feet and you when you feel that you are being run off your feet. If you’ve never tried a pair of bamboo socks, you owe it to yourself to try out this company. They’ll send you socks every month so for you, that’s one less thing you have to worry about. The quality is amazing, they’re super soft; they whisk moisture from your feet, and they’re even naturally antibacterial. So, men, be prepared the easy way. And, stop having to carve time out of your busy schedules to buy those necessary items that rule your lives!

THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE A VOLATILE STOCK MARKET by Marc Schliefer The Dow started the year at 15370 and has gotten as high as 18351 as I sit and write this article. This past August, on one Tuesday, it closed down 15% from its peak. People were panicking as it dropped and were ready to sell all of their stock holdings. Then, two days later, the Dow closed at 16654 which was a gain of 6% in 2 days. This is a perfect example of why people should not panic right away when markets take a sudden drop. There have been many other examples of this type of recovery. The biggest market drop we experienced was in 2008. The market went from a high of 14066 on October 5th, 2007, and hit a low of 6626 on March 6th, 2009, one of the worst market crashes that we have witnessed in our lifetime. That was a drop of 53%. It devastated many people who had to postpone their retirement, home
purchases and other major life events. The people that got out of the market will probably never recover from this major market drop. The people that were able to stay in the market saw it recover to 14089 by March 1st, 2013, and at the end of the year the market was up to 16469. As wealth managers, there are several things that we can do to help clients manage their assets. The most important thing is to develop a long term strategy for each client. If we have a plan, for both long term and for short term, we find that people will be far less likely to panic when the market makes a big drop. They have a purpose and a plan for investing. The other way to reduce portfolio risk is to have an asset allocation strategy that matches the client’s risk profile. If someone is very risk adverse, we will not put all of their assets in growth stocks. We would look at setting up an investment allocation which will include cash, fixed income, stocks (which includes large cap, small cap, mid cap, value, global and international), real estate, commodities and cash. Once you measure your risk tolerance level, it is easier to develop a strategy that will cover all of your needs and wants. Once you have your asset allocation model in place, the next thing that you want to do is to rebalance the portfolio on a quarterly basis. This is important because if one sector does well, you will have too much of your holdings in that sector. You can always change your allocation model as you get closer to your retirement or college education cost goal. The combination of asset allocation and rebalancing is a great way to keep your risk level in check. Another risk management tool is to review your holdings on an annual basis to determine if they are performing as you expected them to. As wealth managers, we are always looking at how the portfolio is performing and whether a change is necessary. We look to change holdings if the current holdings are lagging behind their peers for more than four quarters in a row. And, we always review the tax treatment to make sure that the client will not be left with a major tax bill if they sell one position for another. The goal is to not panic and stick to your long-term plan. Make changes quarterly to insure that your asset allocation still makes sense and also to make sure that your portfolio matches your risk tolerance profile. We are happy to discuss your current portfolio and assess whether it matches your risk tolerance. We can help determine your risk tolerance and analyze your portfolio to see if you are on track with your financial goals. Please feel free to email me at marcs@equityplanning.com. I would be happy to help you analyze your portfolio and risk tolerance and make sure that they match. Rebel Tech:
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS… Star Wars by Kristina Messner
Once again the holiday season approaches and once again there’s a massive array of fabulous gadgets that offer the hope of thrilling and delighting a wide range of friends and family. The hottest drone toys like the DJI Phantom 3 Quadcopter may be atop the gift list of your favorite adventurous types (yet for sure ‘not’ on the wish list of any Secret Service pals). Or perhaps the new sleek Pebble Steel smart watch may please your honey. Surely a new LeapFrog Lead TV should get the kiddos jumping. Normally, all that would get me giddy.
AUDIO: FEEL THE FORCE – A REBEL HEADSET. First Edition Star Wars Rebel Alliance On Ear Headphones, SMS Audio STREET by 50. $200, Amazon. White and orange and all ready for the rebel go-time, you’ll feel just like Luke and Laura – oh I mean Leigh (sorry, that 80s thing again).
This year? All I want this Christmas is Star Wars. That’s right, can take the girl out of the 80s but… whatever!
HANS SOLO MINI-FRIDGE. $149.99, THINKGEEK. One of the coolest of the fun Star Wars swag. Just what it sounds like and holds 18 cans of your favorite beverage. Metal look and outreach has 3-D design of Hans Solo getting frozen in carbonite.
On Dec. 18, perhaps the most awaited sequel movie release ever being released – Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. If you love and adore anyone who might have an inner (or outer, remember, not judging) Star Wars geek thing going on, this would be the time to celebrate that. Because there’s a ridiculous amount of merchandise being pumped out as part of this movie’s promotion and some of it is almost unreal. Here’s a few of my favorites:
May the holiday force be with you, and yours, for a healthy and peaceful New Year. 48

DEATH STAR BLUE-TOOTH SPEAKER. $59.99, ThinkGeek. Now you can officially space out and watch your room light up with music, celestial light effects, and all courtesy of the Death Star. Pretty uplifting stuff.

HYATT PLACE 95 EXPRESS LANES
Just four blocks from the National Mall, the Hyatt Place will be one of the first new hotels to come online this close to the tourist attraction in recent years. Upper floors and a large proposed rooftop bar and terrace offer ample views of the Washington Monument and the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
Virginia could announce plans to extend the 95 Express Lanes along Interstate 395 to near the D.C. line by the end of the year, Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne says. Layne says that negotiations have advanced since Gov. Terry McAuliffe disclosed on WTOP’s “Ask the Governor” program in July that the state was “exploring” extending the High Occupancy Vehicle or toll rules toward D.C. Currently, the Express Lanes northbound end is on I-395, just inside the Capital Beltway, where the old HOV lanes pick up following traditional rush hour HOV rules. Drivers who do not meet HOV requirements when the rules are in effect are required to use the regular lanes on I-395 between Landmark Mall and the District. (WTOP)
SIDWELL FRIENDS Sidwell Friends announced that the school plans to consolidate onto a single campus in the District after the administration signed an agreement to purchase an adjoining property in Northwest Washington. This elite private school announced that it plans to buy a 5.7 acre site bordering the north side of its campus along Wisconsin Avenue, a property currently occupied by the Washington Home assisted living facility and hospice. Sidwell, founded in Washington, DC, in 1883, has an enrollment of 1,149 students and has educated generations of children from Washington’s most affluent and influential families, including President Obama’s daughters Sasha and Malia, as well as Chelsea Clinton, Julie and Tricia Nixon and Archie Roosevelt. 11TH STREET BRIDGE PARK It has been almost a year since the final design was unveiled for DC’s 11th Street Bridge Park. The team behind the park has targeted mid2019 for completion when it will be open to the public. For years, Building Bridges Across the River at THEARC had been working to turn three concrete piers into one elevated park connecting Anacostia and Navy Yard. Last October marked the first milestone of that work when the design from the team of OLIN, OMA and Arup was chosen from over 40 teams competing to design the planned park.
56
JOHN ERIC HOME
The winning design consists of two ramps, projecting from each shore, that intersect and elevate to create “a series of outdoor programmed spaces and active zones that will provide an engaging place hovering above, yet anchored in, the Anacostia River.” Among those programmed spaces are an amphitheater, an environmental education center, a sculpture garden and a boat launch. The park will be the size of about three football fields lined up end to end. Urban Turf)
Its owner, E Street Development — a partnership between Potomac Investment Group and CityPartners — is also casting its gaze south of the hotel, where The Wharf will bring 3.2 million square feet of residential, hotel, office and retail development beginning in 2017. (WBJ)

PASSEIG DE GRACIA Louis Vuitton, Coco Chanel, Gucci and other high-end names line this famous street. This, the Champs-Elysees of Barcelona, offers designer stores, wide sidewalks and outdoor terraces, making it a magnet for both tourists and locals alike. Start at the new, three-story Apple store close to Plaza Catalunya and make your way up while enjoying a mix of high-end as well as high-street fashion.
The largest wine selection in Barcelona can be found at Vila Viniteca. However, this is not only a wine shop; its sister store across the street serves gourmet foods and specialty items including cheeses, caviar, meats, fish and pretty much any and all high-quality foods. Located in the Born, just off of Via Laietana. If you’re looking for a bottle of wine, there’s a great chance this shop will have it. And if they don’t, they’ll definitely recommend an equally good, if not even better option. The shopkeepers are sommeliers in their own right and are extremely knowledgeable.
