This boot-shaped sea island is truly a water-lover’s paradise. When you visit Hilton Head, there are tons of things to do. For a perfect day on the water, head over to one of the island’s marinas, which feature an array of watersports, boat rentals, tackle shops, fishing charters and ecotours. Jump on a jet ski or waverunner and embark on an adventure around the island. It is a wonderful and fun way to take in the beauty of Hilton Head. Or, try your hand at tubing or wakeboarding. It’s a sure way to keep your cool on sizzling summer days. Of course, paddleboarding has become all the rage and has made its way to the island. Easy to learn and a great workout, take a few lessons before heading out for a yoga class, nature tour or moonlight paddle. Of course, thrill seekers can still catch waves on traditional surfboards, skim boards and boogie boards. If you don’t want to don a bathing suit and prefer a less intense adventure, let the wind fill your sails. A great way to see Hilton Head is on one of its sunset Happy Hour cruises. Enjoy an early evening cocktail as the scenery slowly glides by. If you want to jump on a watercraft but don’t want to slow down your sightseeing itinerary, hail a water taxi to neighboring Daufuskie Island. Here you can spend a few hours or the entire day touring the island or battling pirates on a swash-buckling adventure. Speaking of boating trips… if fishing is your thing, then bait your hook and head out for a day of

deep sea or shark fishing. You can hire a boat or join an expedition with experienced boat captains who know the best secret spots to fish. A wonderful way to experience the island’s wildlife up close is on a guided kayak or canoe trip through calm tidal creeks and Lowcountry marshlands. Choose from customized family adventures, corporate retreats, team-building exercises or camps for kids, tweens and teens. Just don’t forget your camera to capture picture-perfect moments or your fishing pole to catch a delicious dinner. Or, notch up and discover the wild side of the Hilton Head and depart on a dolphin watching trip, shark fishing excursion, alligator adventure, turtle talk and walk or bird watching tour to view the island’s wild inhabitants. Want to shake things up and leave the sand and surf behind? Take to the air and soar hundreds of feet above the water on a parasailing trip. It’s guaranteed fun. For those more adventurous, there are several outfits on the island that offer guided helicopter rides. It’s a fantastic opportunity to get a bird’s-eye view of the Lowcountry and a trip that you won’t soon forget. Or, you can put yourself directly in the mix by spending a few thrilling hours on an aerial adventure
ziplining through majestic oaks and pine trees at the water’s edge. Whichever you choose – it will not be regretted! Of course, Hilton Head is known for its pristine beaches. The island’s 12 miles of hard-packed, white-sand provide the perfect playground for any age, in any season. Rent a bike, splash in the surf, fly a kite, build castles in the sand or simply relax on a rented beach chair under an umbrella with a good book in hand. Hilton Head is not only a beautiful island, it is the perfect spot to enjoy a bounty of water related activities. So, grab your swimsuit, sunglasses and sun lotion and dive in to all the island has to offer!

HOME TRENDS WHERE STYLE & ELEGANCE MEET
WRITTEN BY DAVID BROWN
A
VIBRANT SPLASH
OF
COLOR
18
JOHN ERIC HOME
A vibrant splash of color is a simple, yet incredibly effective way of bringing the feel of summer into your home. This season, summer home decor is all about bright, saturated colors. And, you can achieve a summery decor look without having to spend serious amounts of time and money. One of the best ways to lighten up a room and embrace summer home decor trends is to switch out your dark wood furniture for fresh white options. If it’s time to replace your furniture, go for white painted wood instead so your home feels lighter and brighter. But if you want to make use of your current furniture, then it’s time to get out the paintbrushes and start some easy DIY updates. Yellow is the dominant color of summer, so use hits of it throughout your home. From throw pillows and light throws to table bowls and candles. Soft, light yellows, and bold citric and strong mustard tones are the way to go to lighten up your interior space. Art is another great way to brighten up your home
during the summer. Plus, it’s easy to store during the winter months. Now is the perfect time to invest in some new, refreshing artwork and sculptures. Bring summer into your home with floral or tropical prints. it’s time to shed those heavy, insulating curtains and replace them with something lighter and airier to let the sunshine in. You want to be able to let the light in but still be able to block out the sun when it’s hot, or just that little bit too bright outside. Floaty, sheer white curtains is a savvy summer home decor idea. Use a brightly colored bistro table and chairs to brighten up your garden. And since they are small in scale, you can also easily store the set during colder months. For a more elegant take on outdoor garden ideas, feature oversized Chinese ginger jars that you’d normally only see indoors.

A Woman and the
Sea
“I have surfed under super moons and navigated by the stars,” 71% percent of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans. Throughout the millennia, these bodies of water have emitted a sirens’ call. This call has drawn men from the safety of shore to explore and conquer their vast spaces. It seduces those who seek accomplishment on deep-sea waves: those who inherently have an adventurous spirit, those with grit and not faint hearts and those who love the indescribable beauty of the sea. One such woman who followed this sirens’ call is Hannah Jenner who has completed several circumnavigations. Jenner has sailed and raced over 250,000 nautical miles, crossed the Atlantic Ocean 17 times, saved a man overboard in near impossible conditions, set records to make the history books, survived a hurricane and earned respect in a sport that is still very much male dominated. Many of us romanticize of what it might be like to undertake a race, but Jenner knows first-hand both the joys and terrors of sailing. “I have surfed under super moons and navigated by the stars,” says Jenner. “I have also gone three days with no sleep, raced for two weeks with broken ribs, cried, been in fear of my life and wished harder than ever to get back on land.” What was it that drew her to such an exotic sport?
21
“I actually grew up in the middle of England,” says Jenner. “It is about as far away from a lake or the ocean as you can get but, for as long as I can remember, I always had a fascination with the water. My grandfather, who died before I was born, was a captain in the Merchant Navy. Apparently I am quite like him, so I guess sailing was always in my blood. My dad had an interest in dinghy sailing, so during summer vacations we would get to play around on small boats.” Once Jenner attended university, the dabbling ended when the young sailor was introduced to a group of likeminded people. This introduction would be instrumental in setting her path. “When I went to Southampton University on the south coast of England,” says Jenner, “I ended up meeting a bunch of guys in a bar that I worked at. They asked if I wanted to go sailing with them and my gut instinct told me to say yes. Next thing, I am racing with them and loving the adrenaline of the sport.” It was only natural then for this sailor to decide to make ocean navigation a full-time gig. 22
JOHN ERIC HOME
23
“When I graduated, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in ocean racing and that my goal was to race around the world as a captain. At the time, I got laughed at for saying this. But five years after I announced this goal, I was setting off to race around the world and in doing so, became the first ever female captain of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.” The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is a sailing race that circumnavigates the globe in eight legs. It is an endurance event like no other. Generally it is crewed by amateurs, but in 2007-2008, Jenner became the first ever female captain of the race and the only pro-sailor on board the yacht. From the Bridge, she captained the rest of the crew, all amateurs, mightily. Through her leadership, they sailed from Liverpool, UK – Salvador, Brazil – Durban, South Africa – Freemantle, Australia - Singapore – Qingdao, China - Hawaii - San Francisco, USA - Panama - Jamaica - New York, USA – Cork, Ireland and ended the voyage at its start – in Liverpool, UK. The race was 10 months long, with each stop over lasting anywhere from three days to two weeks. The longest stretch at sea was 32 days. 24
JOHN ERIC HOME
The personal gratification of completing such a sail must be very fulfilling for someone with the taste of the sea seemingly in her DNA. The club of successful Captains is small and membership is hard earned. A circumnavigation is an incredibly difficult and stressful undertaking. To accomplish such a feat, there must be synchronicity on board between the Captain and her crew. They must work together as if their lives depended on it. Sometimes, it does. “On this race there was 17 crew and myself,” says Jenner. “There are multiple roles on deck from driving the boat to dealing with the sails. Then, there are strategy roles to determine – weather routing and racing tactics. There are also various maintenance positions and, of course, cleaning and cooking. You need to be very self-aware. If you are tired and grumpy, you must acknowledge that and put it aside for the good of the team. You need to show up and do your job. If you don’t someone else will have to pick up your slack and patience wears thin when 18 people are squeezed into 68 feet of boat. It is hard work, but the bonds you form with a good team are lifelong and like no other. There are not too many jobs where every time you go to sleep you are putting
your life in your co-workers hands!” To successfully complete a sail, it is imperative that the crew seamlessly work together. But there are personal aspects of sailing as well. A sense of individualism is necessitated, particularly in the role of Captain, to lead the rest of the crew. This is the one person responsible for not only the voyage and craft but for every soul on board. “As the only pro-sailor on board, and, in the role of captain, it was extremely stressful and at times lonely with a great deal of responsibility,” says Jenner, “but it is also incredibly rewarding. It is not only all of the decisions with regards to routing, racing tactics and sail plans that you are responsible for, but at any given time there was a crew of 17 people who needed to be continuously trained, reassured and driven to push hard. The people management side is almost the harder part. It may seem like a romantic notion to sail across the ocean, but it can be incredibly tough and there really is no way to prepare yourself for what you will experience until you are out there in it. I watched some of the most confident people on the dock lose it when conditions got tough and others who were less confident be the most stable and reliable in the face of adversity.” Jenner says that the most difficult aspect of a circumnavigation is the ability to stay focused for nearly a year and to continually push both herself and her crew harder and harder, particularly when she felt legitimate fear. Many hazards are present in a sail such as this – topping the list is loss of life and injury – and weather can change both quickly and dangerously. Jenner says that every weather condition requires a different sail plan and considering the sea state that a weather system will bring is a big factor. Every day brings, literally, a unique positioning in Mother Nature. You are often getting beaten up and spending days cold, wet, miserable and nervous. “There are no easy parts in racing once you have left the dock!” says Jenner. Jenner does not have a favorite completed sail. Rather, she says, “I have learned something from every ocean crossing that I have ever done. An experience that really stands out is sailing back into Liverpool after racing around the world and knowing that I not only had proved a lot of people wrong, but I confirmed to myself that I had what it takes to set a goal and go get it.” When asked what sailing means to her, Jenner sums it up beautifully.
“Sailing means adventure, adrenaline, being resourceful, thinking outside of the box, overcoming fear, teamwork, passion and respect,” she says, “it is also incredibly humbling when you realize how small and insignificant one human being is in the face of Mother Nature’s full force. It is the sense of freedom you get in the middle of the ocean when all there is to do is sail, eat and sleep. It can be the most peaceful and beautiful place and within hours be violent and hostile. You have to tune into your instincts, read the signs of approaching weather and respect where you are. The open water is a very powerful place to be. It can make you smile, cry and fill you with fear, but it is a place we can all learn from.” Hannah Jenner retired from sailing in 2017 after nearly 15 years in the sport. After again finding her land legs, she opened a business – Achieving Awesome Performance Coaching – to share her experiences as valuable lessons from which her clients can benefit. Although she no longer races on the water, Jenner still hears the sirens’ call and remains close to the shore living in Southern California.

28
JOHN ERIC HOME
FEATURED PROJECTS One of Pheasant’s recent and most interesting projects is work on the Blair House, the President’s Guest House on Pennsylvania Avenue across from the White House. He had to account for earthquake damage and also revitalize the guest rooms with a modern flair. He also designed BET’s cofounder Sheila Johnson’s home in Virginia’s Fauquier County. The property, called Salamander Farms, contains various homages to the salamander. Pheasant designed the home to be a serene retreat for the non-stop businesswoman. He designed custom rugs with nature motifs to connect with the nature surrounding the 177 acres. The color palette includes chocolate, ivory, and pale blue. In the rear of the lower level is a gallery space with grand French doors to allow for the many gatherings Johnson enjoys holding. Pheasant also included oversize sculptures of apples, cherries, and oranges in the kitchen and the view-filled breakfast room.
CULTURE WHERE ART AND LIFE MEET
ENRICO DAVID: GRADATIONS OF SLOW RELEASE Hirshhorn Apr 16th – Sep 2nd Featuring twenty years of artistic output, Enrico David: Gradations of Slow Release is the largest US museum survey of the artist’s works to date. Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and curated by Michael Darling, the James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator, MCA Chicago, this exhibition shows the breadth and versatility of a distinguished artist, one whose practice is characterized by transformation. Enrico David (Italian, b. Ancona, 1966) is one of the most original artists working today. Based in London, David employs a variety of media—including sculpture, painting, installation, and works on paper—to develop a dynamic and unique vision of the human form and the evershifting sense of being that rests therein. Often fragile, vulnerable, grotesque, and mutable, David’s imagery achieves a universal expression of the human experience, albeit through a deeply personal formulation. The subtitle of the exhibition, Gradations of Slow Release, is taken from a sculpture of the same name. The work, much like the show, represents the way imagery, ideas, and characterizations of being can morph and evolve over time, slowly through the maelstrom of change. Situated within the curved gallery spaces of the Hirshhorn’s Second Level innercircle, David’s works reveal the many themes coursing through his expansive practice, including notions of interiority, multiplicity, and disembodiment. More than that, they reflect the circular process inherent to his craft, where the human form is shaped and reshaped and continuously made anew.
AMERICA’S FAVORITE PASTIME MEETS HISTORY’S GREATEST ADVENTURE National’s Park June - September Join the Air and Space Museum and National’s Park to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landing. Apollo at the Park, launching in June and continuing into the fall of 2019, will place 15 replica statues of Neil Armstrong’s iconic spacesuit in ballparks across country. Apollo 11 was the collective achievement of 400,000 individuals working together towards a common goal. To highlight this national effort, the Museum is bringing a piece of Apollo to Americans across the country in MLB ballparks. A ballpark stadium seat is roughly the same size as the Apollo 11 capsule seat that Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins sat in for 3 days on their journey to the moon. The Apollo 11 landing site, Tranquility Base, and the lunar area that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored is roughly the size of a baseball diamond. Visit the suit. The museum is excited to announce that 15 MLB teams from around the country will be displaying the Neil Armstrong spacesuit statue. 29

KID’S CORNER FROM THE MOUTH OF BABES
SUMMER SUCCESS WRITTEN BY MAGGIE O’BRIEN Summer has started and it is time to relax and spend quality time with family. If you and your kid/kids are sitting on the couch with nothing to do, you have a case of “Summer Boredom.” Of course, everyone wants to have a great summer, but how can you do that? My family tackles summer boredom by going on road trips, keeping up on schoolwork, camping and participating in special days that we wouldn’t get during the school year. An easy way to stay enthusiastic about the summer is to go on road trips. Road trips allow you to see different places as you are driving along, unlike a plane where you only see the clouds and the sky. It helps to plan ahead. You will need to bring snacks, blankets, make seating arrangements, bring games, music, and movies. Snacks allow you to keep driving and not have to stop when somebody is hungry. The air conditioning makes the car cool, so a blanket always helps keep you warm. Seating arrangements are very important. You should try to have everybody’s wants and needs considered. Placing two that mess around near each other is not a wise idea. Having a large family of five kids, it is important to make sure that the seating arrangement operates properly. Games and music allow families to work together or sing your favorite songs, while movies keep kids quiet. Road trips are highlights of the summer. It is important to stay active. You can go on hikes, runs or walk your dog. Not only will you have to stay physically
active, you will have to stay mentally active too. In order to keep up with school and be prepared for the next school year you can print out worksheets. You can make your kids focus and concentrate. They are busy, thus not bored. Camping is a great way to keep active. It is a time to unplug from all the devices and spend time with your family. It is an example of what life was like before modern luxuries in a fun way. You don’t have to grab a tent and walk into the middle of a forest, you can go to a camping ground too. On camping grounds there are usually playgrounds and maybe waterparks too. The food you can cook is delicious, and the fire captivates you. Before you go, make sure you bring everything you will need. During the summer, my family does special days that we don’t have over the school year. So far, we have done “Lord of the Flies Day”, when kids make the decisions. Different taste tests like our “Macaroni and Cheese Trial”, “Ice Cream Testing”, and “Doughnut Experiment” are fun. Museum Morning, Art Afternoon, and Movie Monday have been favorites. Sometimes summer can feel like it lasts forever, but you just have to get creative with it. Making a summer list is a great idea to plan for the months ahead, but remember that summer is about relaxing from school and spending time with family.

“LION’S TAIL” Glassware: Chilled Cocktail Glass Method: Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish, serve and enjoy! Ingredients: 2 oz. Powers “Three Swallow” Whiskey .75 oz. St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram .5 oz. Lime Juice .5 oz. Simple Syrup 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters Garnish: Lime Wheel Crystal clear water, sandy beaches, local food, music, and the natural soul of the environment are defining elements of a relaxing retreat to the Caribbean Islands. The timeless cocktail the “Lion’s Tale” is truly a liquid masterpiece. It starts with a rich, full bodied whiskey with the varied notes of wood, caramel, and vanilla. Next, the cocktail uses truly a special ingredient, Allspice Dram. This rich cordial, native to the islands and made from a local berry, encapsulates the flavors of its namesake. Spicy and sweet, the flavors of mace, nutmeg, clove and cinnamon are all wrapped into one incredibly delicious pour. Too entwine the whiskey and the allspice liqueur, the classic Caribbean base of fresh citrus and sugar add astounding vibrancy to create a notion of refreshment that only the greatest of classics are known. The finishing touch, fitting of any true island cocktail, is a few dashes of Angostura Bitters. When the islands are just a touch out of reach, reach for a classic and use island flavors to achieve the next best thing. *This cocktail was originally published in 1937’s Café Royal Cocktail Book, and this recipe is courtesy of Vintage Spirits and Forgotten Cocktails, by Ted Haigh (2009).

“RIVIERA RUNAWAY” Glassware: Collins Glass Method: In a highball glass, combine mint leaf, ouzo, and lemon juice. Use a muddler and slightly press the mint leaves to release the natural oils without bruising the leaves. Fill the glass with ice and then add the rest of the ingredients. Stir till ingredients are fully combined. Serve and enjoy! Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Malfy “Con Limone” Gin .25 oz. Metaxa Ouzo .25 oz. Lemon Juice 3 oz. Watermelon Juice 1 oz. Club Soda 4-6 Mint Leaves Garnish: Melon Chunks and Mint Leaf Wind swept landscapes, historic villas, fresh produce, and water so pure it reminisces of an ancient legend; these are just a few of the charms that make the Mediterranean coast a magnetic destination. Celebrated for centuries, the coastline of ancient Europe is perfect inspiration for a passionate escape from the day to day, and an equivalently exciting cocktail. Italian lemon gin formulates a base of flavors designed to quickly whisk the mind to a quaint village. Traditional Mediterranean flavors of summer such as watermelon, mint, and lemon are layered upon each other to create reverberating notes of sweet, sour, and fruity for cocktail that is as elegant as one would expect from a Riviera retreat. Ouzo, anise flavored liqueur from Greece, acts a superb accoutrement, tying together natural essences, yet adding just the touch of zest needed to make a drink worthy of enjoying at a serene sunset. Bright, vibrant, refreshing, and somehow boldly seductive – this cocktail evokes a dream summer getaway.

Once home to ports and merchants looking for exotic luxuries to ship and sell, today its lush and lavish beaches are home to some of the most desired vacation destinations in the world. In homage to those old trading routes, the “Between the Sheets” cocktail uses a base of rum and brandy both favorites of sailors and pirates of yore. The two spirits combine to formulate overtones of tropical fruit, stone fruit, baking spice, vanilla and marshmallow. Fruit juices that were once true rarities add delightful depth and balance in the form of sweet pineapple, sharp passion fruit and seductive guava. ISRAELI COUSCOUS SALAD WITH SUMMER VEGETABLES INGREDIENTS 1 cup of Israeli couscous 1 cup of water 1/2 veggie bouillon cube – roughly chopped up 1/4 yellow bell pepper – finely diced 1/2 cucumber – peeled and seeded – finely diced 1 cup of cherry tomatoes – sliced in half 2 tbs red onion – minced 1 handful of parsley – minced 10 olives – roughly chopped 2 oz of feta – diced 3 tbs olive oil plus 1 tsp olive oil 1 tbs red wine vinegar 1 tsp honey – a small squeeze 8 twists of black pepper from a pepper mill A pinch of salt DIRECTIONS Heat a sauce pan over medium heat and add one tsp of olive oil. Once the oil is warm – about 30 seconds – add Israeli couscous and stir for a minute or two until Israeli couscous is slightly toasted.
When couscous is toasted – add 1 cup of water and chopped up bouillon cube. Be careful, the pan is hot and the water will probably instantly come to a boil, pour carefully so it doesn’t splash up. Turn heat down to low and simmer couscous for the amount of time on package instructions. While couscous is cooking, dice red pepper and cucumber – you want the dice to be roughly the same size for both. Add to a large bowl. Next, slice cherry tomatoes in half and add to the other vegetables in the bowl. Mince parsley and red onion. Add to the vegetables in the bowl. Roughly chop olives and add to the bowl. Dice feta cheese and set a side. Whisk olive oil, red wine vinegar, honey, black pepper and salt together. When Israeli couscous is ready, add to a fine mesh sieve and rinse so that the couscous cools. Shake the fine mesh sieve thoroughly so that the couscous is fairly dry. Add Israeli couscous to the bowl of vegetables. Add the dressing and toss to combine. Add feta cheese to couscous and vegetables and toss gently to combine.

LEMON SORBET INGREDIENTS 1 lemon's peel, finely diced 1 cup water 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup lemon juice 1/2 cup carbonated mineral water 6 strips of lemon zest, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a saucepan, stir together the diced lemon peel, 1 cup of water and sugar. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat, and allow to cool. In a pitcher or bowl, stir together the lemon syrup with peel, lemon juice and mineral water. Pour into an ice cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions. Garnish each serving with a twist of lemon peel. If you do not have an ice cream maker, you may freeze it in a tall canister. Freeze for 1 1/2 hours. Remove and stir with a whisk. Return to the freezer and stir about once every hour for about 4 hours. The more times you stir, the more air will be incorporated, resulting in a lighter finished product.

MONEY & FINANCE MONEY SENSE
INCOME STRATEGIES FOR PEOPLE NEARING RETIREMENT
WRITTEN BY MARC S. SCHLIEFER, CFP® PRESIDENT AND FINANCIAL PLANNER
52
JOHN ERIC HOME
As people get closer to retiring, we try to determine all of their sources of income. While they are working, it’s easy to figure out, because most of it is from a salary or profits from a business. Once you start to look at retirement, you need to plan how you will pay your expenses every day. We usually break the income sources into three baskets. The baskets are guaranteed income sources, reliable sources of income and variable sources of income. The first basket would include guaranteed pensions like government or employer pension plans that guarantee you an income from all your years or working for that employer. When you retire, the formula usually is 1 to 2 percent of your highest 3 to 5 years of income multiplied times the number of years that you worked for the employer. When you start taking your retirement benefit, you need to determine what type, if any, survivor benefit that you will pick. This will give a surviving spouse a portion of your monthly benefit if you were to die before your spouse. Most plans will increase your monthly benefit if your spouse dies first and you no longer need to protect them. An example would be that if your full pension is $1000 per month, you would reduce your benefit to $900 per month and if you died first, your spouse would receive $500 per month. You should have your HR people run figures so you and your financial advisor can review the options prior to you retiring. In addition, there is Social Security; this will provide a guaranteed income assuming that you have paid enough in to the system and that you have eligibility based on age and income. You should meet with an advisor who is familiar with social security options to determine when to take your benefit. Social security has a lot of moving parts and for some people it is the only source of guaranteed income at retirement. For that reason, special care should be taken to determine when to take your benefit, you should also try to determine if you should take a spousal benefit, there are age and years of birth requirements that you need to be aware of, and most people have unique situations that would warrant speaking to a knowledgeable advisor on social security issues. If you take benefits before your full retirement age, which varies based on what year you were born; you may start losing part of your benefit if your earned income surpasses $17,640. If your income
goes over $17,640 you will lose $1 for every $2 over that amount. The second basket would be your 401K plan and any other retirement plan that is invested in stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds. These plans provide another source of income in retirement. The main difference is that most of these plans do not have any guaranteed income like the pension and social security benefits have. You can also lose money if the markets go down. This is sometimes the biggest source of retirement income available to many people. You want to make sure that you do not take too much out per year. If you take more than you are earning each year, the value of the account will drop and in the long term the account can possibly go to zero. When you turn 70 and a half, the government requires you to start withdrawing funds from these plans at a minimum amount. The initial required minimum amount at age 70.5 is 3.649%, that percentage goes up each year as you get older. A government table has all of the figures. The retirement plans do not have a guarantee, but they do have a minimum amount of income that you must withdraw. The penalty for not taking enough out of your retirement plan is 50% of the amount that you 53
should have withdrawn. That is a pretty steep penalty and most people do not forget more than one time. The third basket would be your non-retirement investments. This would include savings, stocks, rental real estate, business income, royalties and any other assets that are producing some type of income. You can look at setting some of these assets to pay you monthly or at least on a regular basis so you can count on them to help you fund your lifestyle. It is important to have an income strategy where you take the first basket that is totally guaranteed and layer that income source with your non-guaranteed income sources to set up a retirement income model that will work for you and your family. Please email me if you would like to develop an income strategy for you and your family to help you in your retirement years. My email is marcs@equityplanning.com, you should make sure your baskets of income will work before you decide to fully retire and give up the income from your job.

The Uplifting Powers of
Gratitude
WRITTEN BY HANNAH JENNER
58
JOHN ERIC HOME
Summer makes me smile. Sunshine makes me happy. I hail from the UK where winters are long, wet and distinctly gray while summers seem to go by in a flash. I recall as a child when the first signs of summer appeared how much friendlier people seemed, as if they were grateful to have survived the darker months. The warmth of the sun brought with it the freedom to reconnect with the world outside. I have always associated this time of year with feeling more open to new experiences. It was only when I moved out to the Pacific coast of the USA four years ago however that I began to explore gratitude as a practice. While sitting in my favorite spot up in the mountains overlooking Santa Barbara, a wave of positive energy swept over me. I hadn’t tried to summon it, it just showed up. The sun was bright, I was outside in a warm, beautiful environment and experiencing this new feeling. It’s not that I grew up ungrateful for the things that I had, or for the place that I called home, far from it, I had just never really given gratitude the time of day. I noticed a broad smile growing across my face, the tension in my shoulders eased and had I not been alone, I am pretty sure I would have hugged everyone in sight (even though I am not much of a hugger). It was as if I had taken a drug that opened my heart. I was grateful for my surrounding environment, the people who I called friends, the adventures that had come my way. Interestingly not one material possession was on that list. I realized that these are things I value most and by allowing gratitude to wash over me, all other distractions disappeared in that moment. Perfect clarity. The next day I tried to force this feeling to return and became frustrated when it wouldn’t show up on demand. The more frustrated that I got, the more negativity flooded into every cell in my body. Gone was the smile, the peace and the clarity and in its place the feeling that nothing that I had or did was good enough. I took a walk, focused on some deep breaths and realized that I was at the beginning of a learning process. I had to remind myself that just like a child learning to walk, I would fall down many times but needed to get right back up and carry on. I would have to learn how to welcome gratitude on its terms and not mine. I just needed to nurture the environment in which it was comfortable showing up.
So, I began to take a few minutes out of my schedule each week to get outside and sit in the sun. If gratitude came, I let it flow through my veins and if it didn’t, I let it go. The more I experienced it, the more I learned about my true values and the happier I became. Ever noticed how your mood affects those around you? When you smile you radiate positivity and it is infectious almost like shared gratitude. Whenever you have the opportunity this summer, get outside, walk in nature, breathe in fresh air and allow yourself the opportunity to be grateful. I have no doubt there will be a big smile on your face

FROSTEE AND FRIES When he was developing Sidekick, the sibling bakery that opened alongside the new Ted’s Bulletin in Ballston, entrepreneur Steve Salis wanted to partner with a pastry chef who boasted equal expertise in the technically demanding baked goods found in classic European cafes and the guilty pleasures that deliver sugar highs via American drive-thrus. Nowhere is it more evident than in the Frostee and Fries croissant, one of many treats engineered by Vincent Griffith, the new group pastry chef. Griffith’s team stuffs the croissant with a malt chocolate and french fry cream and drapes it in dark mirror glaze, crunchy salt and potato chip pieces. (eater)
CAR SHARING A European company’s car-sharing service will expand into Arlington in July after rolling into D.C. last October. The service, Free2Move, allows users to pay a flat fee per the minute, hour, or day that they rent a car and allows users to drive anywhere as long as vehicles are returned to one of the company’s designated parking spots. A company spokeswoman said the latest expansion means that the app’s 15,000 users in the Greater Washington area “can now start and end their trip within D.C. or Arlington city limits.” (AN)
TECH GIANT’S ARRIVAL An office building (National Gateway II) and an apartment building (m.flats Crystal City) near the future Amazon HQ2 campus in Northern Virginia have recently hit the market, the latest in a wave of property owners looking to cash in on rising values from the tech giant’s arrival. Marketing brochures for both properties prominently feature Amazon HQ2 as a key selling point. Amazon is beginning moving employees this year into leased space in Crystal City, and it plans to grow its workforce at the campus to at least 25,000 over the next decade. (Bisnow) 66

TROPICAL SANDS

JOHN ERIC HOME
ARE YOU SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS THE SAND AND SURF? IF SO, YOU WILL WANT TO PLACE THESE AMAZING TROPICAL LOCALES ON YOUR BUCKETLIST. SCATTERED ACROSS THE WORLD, YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR REST AND RELAXATION IN THESE PLACES… SEAGRASS BAY, LAUCALA ISLAND, FIJI
This 7.5-square-mile private island paradise is a 50-minute charter flight from Nadi. Covered in tropical jungle, Laucala is home to rares birds and animals, pristine beaches and spellbinding marine life. Seagrass Bay is the quietest of the resort beaches, and a perfect spot to play at being Crusoe— albeit with a fabulous, open-air dining room nearby. HONOKALANI BEACH, WAI’ANAPANAPA STATE PARK, MAUI, HAWAII
A jet-black shore, electric-blue waters, and thick, jungle-like foliage are featured at the Honokalani Beach. Besides lying lazily on the “sand”—tiny lava pebbles—there’s plenty to do. Visit its seaside lava tubes and sea caves carved into the lava cliffs along the shore. It’s wild, unspoiled Hawaii at its best, and a necessary stop en route to Hana. ELAFONÍSI, CRETE, GREECE
This spit is connected to an island nature reserve on the southwestern coast of Greece’s largest island, and its beach is one of the last best-kept secrets in the Mediterranean. Visiting during shoulder season (spring and fall), you might find yourself alone on the pink sand, surrounded by thousands of wildflowers and strange rock formations. REETHI RAH, NORTH MALÉ ATOLL, MALDIVES
The Maldives is home to over 1,200 beaches but, perhaps its best sand is the North Malé Atoll, and Reethi Rah. Eight perfect strands of sand circle this larger-than-average island, each seemingly better than the next—and with only one resort here, it never feels crowded. MAUNDAYS BAY, ANGUILLA
Year after year, Maundays Bay wins top honors in myriad travel magazines and consumer polls. The Bay—on Anguilla’s southwesterly tip—wins for crystal-clear water, a gradual slope, pristine sand, and a perfect half moon arc. Technically a public beach, it is rarely crowded and populated. Of note, Maundays is ideal for families with kids, as sight lines are uninterrupted, there are rarely any waves, and the beach is neatly bookended by two small breakwaters.
