Christmas

DECOR IN 2022

The holidays are nearly here, and with family and friends coming to visit, it is imperative we create a warm and inviting space for our guests to relax, celebrate and make new memories.

Decking the halls for Christmas should invoke the magic of the season. Consider rich colors, soft and cozy textures, and creative ideas that radiate joy and excitement. Creating a general décor theme is a great place to start when planning to pull together decorations in a way that looks coordinated and consistent.

Red and green are the colors that traditionally represent Christmas. If you’re ready for something non-traditional, then Christmas 2022 is your year to choose a new and unique color scheme for your holiday cheer.

Why not turn your home into a winter wonderland with all-white decorations? A neutral all-white palette provides a serene and calm look. Even better, it makes decorating super simple, which many of us need these days. Use white flowers like roses, hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, and gladiolus, perhaps with mini gingerbread houses to add a little contrast.

To add a touch of color to your neutral Christmas décor, add some green. You can frame your doorways with greenery, hang boughs from the stair railings, and incorporate mini potted pines, cedars, and cypress. Best of all, when you decorate with holiday greenery, your home will smell amazing!

Color combinations found in nature, such as brown and green, always look good. Don’t hesitate to take a cue from Mother Nature and use these popular earth tones to decorate your home this Christmas. To maintain simplicity, decorate the green tree with brown and tan ornaments only. When decorating the walls and hallways, stick with several different green shades for a layered and multi-toned look.

Color can also set the mood. When it comes to celebrations in the cold season, something warm and energizing is an excellent choice. From metallics

19

to neutrals to jewel tones, unexpected hues can be just as festive and merry as the classic red and green combination. Metallics in shimmery gold, silver and copper are artistic and stylish Christmas decorating colors that spread warmth.

Combine a metallic hue with one bold and expressive color like deep green, purple, teal, or dark blue for greater dimension. The introduction of metallic items will add extra shine and layered depth to the overall color scheme.

Traditionally, the living room becomes the heart of your home during the holiday season. The living room is home to the Christmas tree and focal point of all your holiday décor. Once you have the Christmas tree trimmed the next project needs to be trimming. The fireplace is where your family gathers to keep warm and enjoy time during cold winter nights. Here are a few ideas to create a cozy mantle and hearth.

First try wooden candlesticks in varying heights, a lush garland, and matching stockings to create a simple, serene, and peaceful mantle. You can also create a unique perspective by utilizing vintage elements. Consider using bottlebrush trees, plenty of greenery, and postcards to add a vintage vibe to your Christmas mantle. If you prefer a more traditional mantle, go on an exploration journey in your backyard for tree trimmings, branches, and bright berries. Bring it all together indoors and arrange it beautifully on your Christmas mantel. Lastly, add simple white string lights set the stage for a warm mood.

Consistency is always key in creating a seamless look throughout your home. Utilize the same type of lighting on the Christmas tree, the fireplace, door frames, and window treatments. Wrapping seasonal faux foliage such as holly, ivy and berry branches around the light cord hides the electrical wiring and brings an outdoor winter element into the space. Loop a velvet ribbon around the ends to secure the look and add a pop of color.

Next place pillar candles in creams and off-whites in a staggered configuration on the hearth, so the stringlight-and-branch bundle weaves around them and drapes off each side of the mantle. The rest is up to you, and your options are nearly endless.

Layers add interest and dimension, and they create a warm and cozy environment to encourage friends and family to relax, linger, and reminisce about past celebrations. Christmas themed pillows in soft fabrics encourage snuggling sessions in living rooms and family rooms, so use large solid-colored pillows as a background for smaller decorated pillows on chairs and sofas. Thick throw blankets in deep reds, greens and creams work well too—you can also mix and match in appropriate colors and patterns to create a signature look.

Once you have decorated your living room, it’s time to move on to the other areas of your home. Since it’s easy to overlook powder rooms, kitchens and guest rooms, think of small-scale ideas for these spaces. Holiday pillows, richly hued throws, fun holiday dish towels, scented candles, glass bowls of Christmas ornaments and various holiday family photos all add a festive touch.

We all spend a decent amount of our time in our bedrooms. For this reason, it’s nice to infuse a tad bit of holiday cheer into the place where you sleep and wake up. Prep the space by draping a pretty garland across your headboard, or spread some red and green throw blankets on

your bed. Put up a minimalistic tree decorated with lights, or hang a small Christmas banner. Add a wreath or freshly cut foliage to add a scent of the holidays to your bedroom.

Indulging a person’s sense of smell is another way to wow your family and friends over the holidays. Seasonal scents such as pine, cranberry, spruce, gingerbread, fir and cinnamon are just a few options for candles. Also, grouping cinnamon-scented pinecones in a statement bowl on your coffee table or mantel are great additions that promote the holiday spirit in your home.

We celebrate the holidays in our homes with family and friends and we cherish those traditions. It is essential that we create feelings of warmth, security and tranquility to make new memories from the precious time we spend with our loved ones during these very special times.

Festive Feasts

Quick tips for creating a dining room ready for entertaining

While there are tried-and-true ways for making a dining room feel cozy, such as mixing warm lighting, soft chairs and inviting walls, according to Tracy Morris of Tracy Morris Design, there are also quick tips for creating a festive dining atmosphere when gathering with family and friends during the holidays.

Tracy, along with Kelley Proxmire of Kelley Proxmire, Inc. and Michael Winn of Winn Design + Build, offer some easy ways, and share a few favorite photos, to make the holiday meal extra special.

TRACY MORRIS

Tracy Morris Design www.tracymorrisdesign.com

• Here is any easy trick to make your room “aglow” for a festive table. If you have extra champagne flutes, wine glasses or coupe glasses (you know, the ones at the back of the cabinet), add a bit of water, a spring of pine, and a tea light. Place these additional “glow lights” on your table and watch your guests ooh and aah over this simple trick.

• When you are making a centerpiece for a dining table, nine times out of 10 it is better to have a lower arrangement. Reason being, you can easily talk to your guests without having to look through the centerpiece. To create a “wow” centerpiece, go to your local hardware store and purchase a loop of Frasier fur garland. Cut it open, weave it through your dishes on the table and add votives. It’s such a simple way to add a bit of sparkle to your table.

• Another simple way to spruce up your holiday table is to place pine sprigs in a bucket – a champagne bucket that is. During the holidays, if my table, bar or countertop is looking blah, I take a champagne bucket and fill it with sprigs of pine and holly. Not only does it look great, but it smells even better!

KELLEY PROXMIRE

Kelley Proxmire, Inc. www.kelleyproxmire.com

• For a decorative touch at each place setting, add fun napkin rings, such as ones with red sleds or a shiny gold finish, around monogrammed or even seasonal cocktail napkins.

• Place white vases with greenery and berries at each guest’s place setting.

• Keep the centerpiece lower on the table and include beeswax candles.

• Add festive pillows along the back of each chair.

• To create a festive dining room, hang fresh, unadorned wreaths on the windows.

• Place seasonal fruit in the center in a decorative bowl.

• Display vintage candlesticks with coordinating candles, along with heirloom silverware.

• Consider adding a special gift for guests at place settings.

MONEY DOESN’T HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED. Are

Did you ever get that feeling of doom on the flight home after a wonderful holiday in the sunshine? As a fairly well-travelled Englishman, it was an all-too-frequent encounter for me to be met by the damp, cold, drizzling rain and a hefty traffic jam on arrival back into the U.K. My wife and I would sulk like chil dren all the way home and spend the next 2 weeks fantasizing about a life abroad, warm al fresco evenings and skipping to work along cobbled pedestrianised streets. This was usually followed by some very left-field job applications – usually in the direction of Perth, Australia (another of our favourites), California or somewhere in Europe. The result was typically underwhelming with a low response rate on the jobs front, waking up 9 minutes earlier to try and beat the rush hour traf fic and eventually giving up entirely on the dream and settling back into ‘normal’ life. The next holiday came and repeat.

Then in our 30’s kids came along. I was content as a Sales Director for a British property firm and my wife was a mar keting guru at a national grocery retailer. Money was good but quality of life was poor, generally with both of us working long days and suffering, as many in the corporate world do, under some fairly intense pressure. Suddenly my wife had an epiphany (or perhaps she was close to a breakdown!) and de cided it might be worth spending more time with our children and trying to prioritise our wants and needs instead of our CEOs.

For the first time in our then 10-year marriage, she gave me the green light to scope out a move abroad. Having been pushing for this pretty much on and off throughout the 10 years, you can imagine my excitement when that moment ar rived! Most families, I imagine, would map out a game plan for such a move and factor in a healthy amount of time to plan the intricacies involved with international relocation. Fast-for ward 3 months and we’d both quit our jobs and were living on a vineyard in Saint-Emilion in the south-west of France.

To be honest, it’s all a bit of a whirlwind when we look back now, but somehow amid the Covid19 era, the blur of working from home with kids with limited human interaction, the stars aligned, and we took the plunge.

So why Saint-Emilion? Having worked in real estate for 20 years in England, I’d always had the same goal; selling

30 JOHN ERIC HOME

THE ENGLISHMAN IN

SAINT-EMILION

French chateaux in the south of France. The appeal of French culture, the historical architecture and the prospect of merg ing my work with a more attractive lifestyle led me to France. Along with my wife’s dual nationality, it made France an ob vious choice. I secured a job as an independent real estate agent with a luxury property agency based in the Bordeaux region, specialising in the sale of chateaux and vineyards. My wife also secured work, we rapidly found a house and a school for the children, and in August 2020, French life began.

The ‘living on a vineyard’ aspect was quite unexpected, and not something that was in the original plan. It was some what a stroke of luck, thanks to my very well-connected prop erty colleague, and included a nice chateau that we were able to rent and now call home. My wife and I both like wine, but now as Saint-Emilion residents, we really love wine.

Saint-Emilion is a UNESCO world heritage site, inhabited since Roman times, with a monolithic church built in the 12th century and 200km of tunnels created centuries ago. Today there are 42 restaurants and more than 970 prestigious vine yards generating more than 10 million bottles of fine red wine each year. Located only 40 minutes from the city of Bordeaux, the only UNESCO city in the world and boasting the longest shopping street in Europe, rue Saint-Catherine – Saint-Emilion is also just over an hour from the stunning Atlantic coastline, in fact making it one of the best places to live in France (in my opinion). As a beach lover (and chief sandcastle builder)

– proximity to the beach was a must for us. Also high on our checklist was an International Airport, which Bordeaux is, with daily flights back to London should we need, plus Paris and many other international destinations. The added bonus was the TGV (Train Grande Vitesse) which links Bordeaux to Paris in just over 2 hours, making the region’s connectivity really quite impressive and certainly much better than the north of England travel links we’d been used to for most of our adult lives.

Bordeaux of course is steeped in history…... the Saint-An dré Cathedral, the Grand Theatre built in 1780, the Place des Quinconces (largest square in France) and Place de la Bourse with its famous Miroir d’eau (photo above) attracting millions of tourists each year. The Jardin Public, the Cité de Vin wine museum, bike rides along the quays and boat tours on the Ga ronne River, make it well worth a visit. It’s the hub of the wine region so everything is centred around outstanding gastrono my, bustling squares with packed out cafes and restaurants as the French enjoy their 2-hour lunch break with wine. Another cultural bonus of life in France!

Wine has fast become a focal point for us, and whilst it might not have the most positive impact on our bank account, we are building quite a collection of right bank Saint-Emilion Grand Cru and Grand Cru Classé wines to enjoy now and in the future (huge thanks to our newly found winemaker friends).

Only a short drive away is the left-bank wine region of

33

Medoc and Haut-Medoc with its famous appellations such as Margaux, Saint-Estephe and Pauillac. South of the city in the Graves region you’ll find the renowned Pessac-Léognan and sweeter wines often made in Sauternes. Closer to home between Bordeaux and Saint Emilion is the Entre-deux-Mers wine region, named by its geographical position ‘between two seas’ signifying the rivers Garonne and Dordogne that surround it.

Having lived in France for two years, it was easy to learn that the French (and 100 million tourists) enjoy holidaying in many of the country’s hot spots. The popular Bassin d’Ar cachon, a sea-side basin on the Atlantic coast offers luxury real estate, a beach lifestyle, and oysters from the bay itself, with many charming villages and towns such as Cap Ferret, Pyla-sur-Mer and Arcachon itself. We were delighted to find it only 90 minutes’ drive from our home, resulting in many summer day trips to the beach and very happy children (and adults). The Pyrenees offer sensational skiing just 3 hours’ drive away (which enables our black Labrador to come along too!) along with a selection of local delicacies like Raclette (a delicious meal of charcuterie and salads enjoyed with melted local raclette cheese). La Rochelle is also a destination we’ve

come to love, with the old port and Ile de Ré offering seafood delights and local oysters.

All in all, French life is great. Living on a vineyard is some thing quite remarkable - some mornings we are woken by the sound of the wine-maker Jonathan, arriving at 6:30 am and taking his tractor out into the vines. Other days we meet a large truck delivering pallets of bottles as I try to navigate out of the drive on my way to a chateau visit, via the most incredible school drop-off in the village of Saint-Emilion. And at harvest time, each September, our family loves to watch the team bring in the season’s grapes and prepare for their journey ahead, seeing the pride in their faces after a year of nurturing their vines.

Safe to say we’re glad we took the plunge, took a chance, and made France our home!

TANYA SMITH-SHIFLETT OF UNIQUE KITCHENS & BATHS AND SARA SWABB OF STORIE COLLECTIVE OPEN A SHOWROOM AND SHOP IN THE HEART OF WASHINGTON, DC

Tanya Smith-Shiflett of Unique Kitchens & Baths and Sara Swabb of Storie Collective open a showroom and shop in the heart of Washington, DC

With client demand at an all-time high, Tanya Smith-Shiflett of Unique Kitchens & Baths and Sara Swabb of Storie Collective, who have collaborated on projects for a few years, decided it was the right time to open a showroom and shop in Georgetown. “Georgetown is a hot spot and the proximity to Sara is great,” says Tanya.

“Tanya found the perfect spot for our shared shop and showroom,” says Sara, who lives right around the corner. “Georgetown holds a special place in my family’s heart, but this location is also a hub for DC’s trade and retail design and furnishing stores, along with a variety of boutiques, antique sellers, and home to other creatives who we love.”

Both Unique Kitchens & Baths and Storie Collective have managers onsite to ensure clients have a wonderful

experience when visiting. “Our showroom features several custom pieces, including a cabinet collection we designed together, so clients are able to stop in, open and close drawers, touch the hardware, and really feel the quality of product that Unique Kitchens & Baths delivers,” says Sara. “A range of color and door style samples are available for inspiration, but Unique Kitchens & Baths is truly the epitome of custom, so they are able to create whatever a client may have in mind.”

CURRENT
DESIGN NEWS

The designers share additional insight into their backgrounds, how the showroom, shop and their cabinet line came together, and what to expect when you visit.

Provide brief backgrounds on how you started in the design business and your business philosophies.

Tanya: As owner and founder of Unique Kitchens & Baths, I have always believed that the kitchen is the heart of the home. I’m passionate about balancing function and beauty in the rooms we use the most.

While working full time in medical sales, I also began helping my husband’s building busines part-time by designing kitchen layouts. I then became an NKBA-certified kitchen designer and founder of our company, creating beautiful and functional kitchens. I continue to expand my skills, hone my expertise, and work closely with our in-house designers to create timeless spaces.

Sara: As founder and creative director of Storie Collective, I develop and implement a tailored design with conciergelevel attention to detail for our full-service clients. The result is an individualized experience, resulting in a space that is custom, yet comfortable, and timeless in its appeal. Creating purposeful and authentic spaces that our clients will love for years to come is what makes us thrive. Through global travels, my aesthetic is marked by authenticity in its use of natural materials, raw textures, and handmade objects mixed with everyday modern essentials. I love working with motivated and trusting clients to design a home that reflects their story.

I began my career in business and marketing, working for a Fortune 50 company and later a digital marketing firm where I learned to understand client goals, develop unique solutions, and deliver results that exceed expectations. I have an MA in Communications from Johns Hopkins University and a BS in Business Marketing from Miami University in Ohio. As a design lead at another DC-based design firm, I found my deep passion for residential interiors and honed my aesthetic and process.

You collaborated on the design of a line of cabinetry. What was the process like to create this cabinetry collection?

Tanya: Sara and I have been collaborating on projects for a few years. She is a wonderful designer and has introduced us to some lovely clients. Creating a cabinet collection is all about bringing out the “unique” aspects of the designer. Your style should shine in your door designs, colors and woods, and I feel we have achieved that with each and every collaboration.

Sara: We completed our cabinet collection in the last year. For us, the process of building a cabinet line was truly intuitive. We delight in lines, movement, and function — every detail of each product we put in a space — and cabinetry is no different. From my product sketches to

Unique Kitchens & Bath’s prototypes and color samples, we built this cabinet collection with our clients’ lifestyles in mind. Together, we designed cabinetry for my home, so I have the unique perspective of being both the designer and a client, using and living with our designs every day. Given that experience, I have the utmost trust that our collaborative process really works in bringing beautiful and functional designs for our clients’ specific lifestyles.

Tanya, what are the latest items that homeowners are asking for in kitchen designs? What colors are trending as far as kitchen cabinets? Special features?

Tanya: Lower cabinets with less upper cabinetry are the top requests right now. Favorite colors are greens and blues, plus homeowners just love the spice inserts!

Sara, what are some of the products you carry in the showroom? Do you have special items planned for the holidays?

43

Sara: We are diligent about selecting both vintage and modern items at a range of price points. Some of our pieces are more of an investment - like our collection of vintage, handwoven rugs, but we also source accent pieces, such as candlesticks, ceramics and planters. We intentionally focus on items that clients can use in their everyday lives, but that also bring a curated, collected look to their spaces. Lighting a candle is such an easy way to soften the mood and bring warmth to your home. From beautifully scented candles to unexpected tapers for your dining table, we always have candles on hand that feel special.

For the holidays, we will be centering our collection around pieces for entertaining and hosting family and friends, such as beautiful linens, brass and wood accented serving pieces, and cozy throws and pillows to refresh your seating area. A new collection that we are really excited about is a charming line of fluted-edge serveware. They feel both effortless and special, timeless and modern, all at the same time. The collection will include items like cake stands, appetizer plates, and platters that could easily be for every day, but special enough for your holiday table. We’ll also feature pretty hand soaps and hand towels to spruce up guest spaces.

Anything else to add about the showroom and shop?

Tanya: The showroom is gorgeous and being in Georgetown provides a “destination location,” where you can come visit the showroom, eat, shop, and make a day out of it!

Sara: We are also planning to host a series of pop-ups during the holiday season. We are so excited to bring beautiful gift items to our Georgetown clientele so be sure to follow us on Instagram @storiecollective and @uniquekitchensandbaths to get that information!

HAVE DRINKS WITH A FAMOUS AUTHOR

The Hay-Adams Author Series recreates a grand literary tradition established by John Hay and Henry Adams in the late 1800s. At the time, their homes were the center of Washington’s intellectual and social gatherings, featuring literary giants such as Mark Twain, Edith Wharton and Henry James. The Hay-Adams Author Series was launched to renew the spirit of literary discourse on the very land where the historic hotel stands today. The tradition lives on with distinguished authors of our time in celebrating their works and sharing fine food, drink and lively conversation in a magnificent setting. Grab a friend or family member and share in a provocative and fun evening. Afterwards, have a holiday drink in the lounge.

47
THE HOLIDAYS ARE, OF COURSE, A TIME TO GET TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO CELEBRATE. THEY ARE ALSO THE TIME TO TAKE A MOMENT AND ACTUALLY ENJOY THAT TIME. HERE ARE OUR TOP 3 SUGGESTIONS FOR ENJOYING A FEW HOURS WITH THOSE YOU LOVE…

OTTAWA OTTAWA

OTTAWA DURING THE HOLIDAYS A CAPITAL IDEA

The seat of government for the country of Canada, the City of Ottawa, is in the southern portion of the province of Ontario where the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers meet. Ottawa’s population is well over 1 million, making it Canada’s fourth-largest city. It is also one of the country’s most popular vacation destinations, drawing millions of visitors each year. Primary employers in Ottawa include the public service of Canada and the high-tech industry. The city is often referred to as “Silicone Valley North.” Other major employers include the City of Ottawa and the health sector. It also has the largest rural economy of the major cities across the country. With ample opportunities to live, work and play within its borders, Ottawa boasts a hot real estate market, offering everything from compact condominiums to sprawling estate homes.

TRAVELING TO OTTAWA THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?

BRING A WARM COAT!

Known for unpredictable weather, you can count on Ottawa being appropriately chilly during the vibrant holiday season, when the city comes to life through festivals, concerts, decorated shopping venues and an extravaganza of light displays. One of Canada’s most multicultural cities, Ottawa is characterized by a kaleidoscope of ethnic celebrations including Christmas. And you can keep warm while you travel around the city in one of the new winter hop-on/hopoff bus tours, thanks to the vintage heated trolleys of Cobblestone Tours.

WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO DO?

Tourism is critical to Ottawa’s economy, and it’s easy to understand why, as the city boasts numerous national attractions. Shopping is an exciting adventure in everything from boutiques to major malls and big-box stores. History buffs appreciate the incredible architectural gems including 25 National Historic Sites of Canada. Foodies go wild over Ottawa’s cuisine. Yes, you’ll find Canadian favourites such as poutine, but the city is home to more shawarma shops than anywhere in the world outside the Middle East! You’ll also want to sample “Ottawa-style” pizza with its doughy crust and toppings baked under a blanket of cheese.

THE BEST OF THE BEST

KELLEY PROXMIRE

In her 20-plus-year career, Kelley Proxmire has developed a matchless eye for crafting what she describes as “tailored traditional” interiors. Her projects suffuse warmth and hospitality while maintaining excellent balance, proportion and scale. Her love of color is combined with an appreciation for the fresh sophistication of white and the daring elegance of black. Adept at mixing traditional pieces with unexpected finds, Kelley creates environments that are attuned to the client’s world and faithful to the architecture and setting of a home. Kelley was named the 2016 Designers’ Choice Hall of Fame Designer by Home & Design magazine and inducted into the Washington Design Center Hall of Fame in 2009. She has participated in 25 show houses since 2001, including five DC Design Houses benefiting Children’s Hospital. To see more of Kelley’s projects, visit her Instagram @kelley. proxmire.

Kelley enjoys decorating for the holidays and below she shares some of her favorite holiday decorating tips.

What’s your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas, mainly because it’s a sacred celebration, but also because it spans a season, not just a single day like other holidays.

Have you been asked to decorate clients’ homes for the holidays? And can you describe the process?

Yes, I have decorated clients’ homes for the holidays, from an entire house to a first floor, as well as some outdoor decor. I often work with local florists for greenery and flowers. I particularly like white amaryllis and mix fresh greens with artificial ones, creating a fuller arrangement.

I take into consideration the colors in a home when decorating for the holidays to establish a theme. For instance, a condominium I designed for a couple featured a red dining room, so I incorporated red into their holiday decor and added gold and white accents.

59
Photos of a Kelley Proxmire-designed home she decorated for the holidays, photos by Geoffrey Hodgdon

What colors do you most often use for holiday decorating?

Where do you purchase greenery and other holiday items? I tend to use gold, silver or white, plus one pop of color, such as red. I often find nice holiday items at Michaels – combined with vintage and higher-end accessories, such as seasonal napkin rings and pillows, you can create memorable spaces.

What does your home look like during the holidays?

It depends on the room! I usually decorate the living room, family room, dining room, and foyer on the main floor. I love to incorporate some of my collectible items, such as nutcrackers and ornaments, but I also change the theme from year to year. Bows generally need to be refreshed each year and I rotate bowls and accessories.

Do you have favorite hostess gifts to give and receive?

For a hostess gift, I like to fill a white vase with flowers and greenery, something the hostess can use in the powder room. And you can’t go wrong with chocolate! It’s a favorite gift to get.

What’s a tip or two to make an impact when decorating for the holidays?

Consider the placement of the Christmas tree in a room. If you can place it in front of a window, it automatically creates a beautiful holiday scene from outside. And it’s always beneficial to have help when doing your holiday decorating, especially when thinking about outdoor decor. It’s a fun family and friend activity, but also one that might require extra assistance.

SNAPSHOT

ASPEN | COLORADO

Recently, John Eric Home sat down with Liz Leeds, a resident of Aspen, Colorado who gave us the scoop on what this enchanted city is like during the holidays…

JEH: Can you describe for our readers what Aspen is like during the holiday season?

LL: Aspen is very ‘magical’ during the holiday season. With the snow glistening everywhere locals and visitors meander in and out of our shops to purchase that special holiday gift. Restaurants are decorated beautifully, and it’s hard to decide if one wants to cozy up by the fireplace or wine and dine at one of their favorite eateries.

Starting December 20 with a free kick-off skating party, there are there are dozens of public, adult and familyfriendly events around town. From cookie decorating, art projects and story hours for the kids, to free hot chocolate on the Cooper Street Mall, live jazz, après ski drink specials, and Victorian caroling, there’s something for everyone.

JEH: What is your favorite aspect of Aspen during the holidays?

LL: The excitement of watching skiers coming and going throughout our ski areas. Children are laughing and having fun whether skiing, ice skating, sledding, or going for ice cream. The villages are lit up with gleaming lights making it feel so very special.

JEH: How is Aspen different during the holiday season then during other seasons of the year?

LL: Aspen is very busy with many of the second homeowners coming to town to celebrate the holidays and take advantage of early season snow. The annual Wintersköl celebration highlights what makes winter in Aspen so special. The celebration features four days of festivities across town. Guests should stay on the lookout for snow and ice sculptures, firework shows, a canine fashion show, fat-bike races on the snow, après ski parties, and much more!

JEH: If one of our readers happens to be in Aspen during the holidays, what is the one thing that they must make sure to see or do?

LL: It is great fun to try a sleigh ride and let the horses do the work! Take an evening trip to Pine Creek Cookhouse for a memorable holiday adventure.

JEH: Are there any special events that are held?

LL: Join Aspen residents to gaze at The Little Nell tree lighting. The brightly lit trees are held in the Limelight’s sister hotel’s slopeside courtyard. Be on the lookout for cookies, carolers, Santa and live reindeer. Plus, you’ll be sure to feel the cool and welcoming community vibe.

JEH: Are there any special shops or boutiques that you could recommend for unique gifts?

63

LL: One cannot go to Aspen without going to Kemo Sabe Aspen. An Aspen institution, Kemosabe is the go-to spot for authentic Western gear. In addition to a wall-to-wall assortment of classic cowboy hats and boots, the shop offers monogrammed silver belt buckles, turquoise jewelry, Navajo blankets, vintage saddles, and leather-bound journals. Whether there to shop or just enjoy the lively scene, it’s a must-stop for any visitor.

JEH: Is there one particular food or tradition that is special to Aspen during the holidays?

LL: Aspen Crud at the J-Bar. Aspen used to have soda fountains. The J-Bar, easily Aspen’s most famous watering hole at the Hotel Jerome was turned into a soda fountain (wink, wink) during Prohibition. And what did the locals order?

A milkshake, of course: vanilla ice cream spiked with bourbon. It’s still on the menu, a potent reminder of Aspen’s wild and crazy youth.

JEH: What makes Aspen special always? (Not only during the holidays.)

LL: While Aspen certainly has everything you’d want in an outdoor paradise, the city is also bursting with arts and culture. Several theaters and music and film venues call the city home, bringing in world-class acts, as well as playing host to local favorites such as the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Art lovers will enjoy the Aspen Art Museum, as well as a wide array of art galleries throughout the downtown area. The city is also home to several impressive cultural institutions, including The Aspen Institute and Aspen Words for literature lovers.

The Aspen Music Festival is considered one of the best classical music festivals in America. The eight-week summer season sees over 400 music events, with some of the biggest names in classical music gracing the stage. Visitors can see performances by five orchestras, as well solo and chamber musicians, and fully staged opera productions. With an emphasis on music education, there are also master classes, lectures, and children’s programming available.

JEH: What do you enjoy most about living in Aspen?

LL: There is so much variety in Aspen between great restaurants, high end retailers, four different ski mountains, plenty of culture, good schools, non-stop events; one will never get bored.

Come to Aspen for fun. Please call me for a personal tour or to get information relating to all that Aspen offers!

Christmas Markets

LET THE MAGIC BEGIN

Falling snow like diamonds. Air crisp as fresh cut apples. The smell of baked strudel and other just out-of- the- oven creations. Frosty cold champagne after a day of ducking in and out of artisan pop ups throughout fairytale villag es. These are just a few of PlanetKelli’s favorite things at Christmas Markets in Europe. And to top it off, like crème fraiche on anything decadent - it’s a must to experience this quintessential tradition aboard a river cruise.

First, let’s unpack the meaning of “Christmas Markets,” the when, where and why of it all.

Actually, many of them are street party celebrations in various locations throughout Europe. This all started some 700 years ago in Germany to kick off the Advent of Christ mas and eventually spread throughout neighboring coun tries. To this day, Christmas Markets are thriving as they did in the Middle Ages. They remain a December long event where many come from all over the world to witness and participate in both small towns and cities. Local artisans showcase their crafts, food and drink, music and of course all things Christmas, especially unique to the various areas.

The best way to immerse into Christmas Markets is in deed by river. Embark on a 5-star luxury vessel, settle in for the week, sit back and let your story begin. Whether it’s the Danube or the Rhine, it is certain you will encounter all the glory of the season along either of these routes. Each have unique unforgettable features.

73

A most delightful part of travel is tasting what is special about a particular destination and in the case of Christmas Markets, the seasonal cuisine is what makes the journey so gloriously full of options. I would be remiss not to give proper mention to the iconic Gluhwein which has been a staple of this festive period since the 1400’s. Copious amounts are always flowing and ready to be consumed. Plus, each town has its own spin on just what makes up this lovely little libation.

To break it down, the word Gluhwein was derived from the words GLOW and WINE because hot irons were used (and still are) to heat things up to a nice cozy temperature. All for the purpose of warding off chill and bringing about - shall we say a “lightness” to one’s spirit in an otherwise dark (wintery) season. So how is this concocted? Simple math. Red wine + star anise + cloves + cinnamon + vanilla + sugar = yum. Now, let’s take it to another level: the Germans often have it mit Schuss – that is with a shot of rum or other liquor. I say bring it ALL on and quick! Hurry up December…suddenly, I’m feeling like a kid and can’t wait for The MOST wonderful time of year to roll around while dressed in fluffy down and well… cashmere of course.

And with every glass of mulled wine, beer or bubbles comes a perfect food pairing. One of my favorites is Germany’s version of a winter “fast food” called Currywurst. And the best place to have this is in Berlin. This is not just any ordinary fast food. This is something extraordinarily different all thanks to Herta Heuwer of Berlin in 1949. So, what is this mystery dish? Well, after Herta obtained ketchup or possibly Worcestershire sauce and curry powder from the British soldiers, she made a sauce of it and poured it over steamed fried pork sausage. This sensation stuck and is still thoroughly enjoyed especially wrapped in bacon. But you haven’t LIVED until you’ve tried it accompanied by an icy flute of champagne. It may not sound like the epitome of gourmet fare, but I for one, have been craving it ever since my last visit to Berlin. Sign me up for seconds please!

There are a multitude of fantastic Christmas Markets throughout Europe which is precisely why I recommend doing it by river cruise. Unpack just once and experience as many as you like along the way. You are right in the middle of the action as soon as stepping off your floating hotel. From the Netherlands to Switzerland and Germany to far stretches of

76 JOHN ERIC HOME

Eastern Europe – it’s truly my Happiest Place on Earth during this time.

On the Danube, stumble upon the quaint village of Passau, Germany, famous for its storybook setting with both Gothic and Italian Baroque architecture. This is also where Mozart composed a famous symphony in just 3 days. Or visit his birthplace, beautiful Salzburg, Austria.

And for the icing on the Christmas [fruit] cake, don’t forget Vienna, The City of Waltzes and home to so many tasty and scenic displays, not to mention the Arts and Schonbrunn Palace Markets. Another favorite from this location is The Vienna Boys Choir. Whether you see them here or anyplace else on the globe – see them! Your ears and heart will be in awe.

Moving further down the Danube is the stunning city of Budapest with its palaces and upscale shopping venues. And let’s not forget a side trip, perhaps pre or post to Prague in the Czech Republic.

Now shifting gears - the Rhine River has breathtaking castles at every vantage point. This is a good time to refresh that cocoa or other beverage of choice and recline on the

ship as time stands still as the vessel moves on. From Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam the itinerary is solid with mesmerizing sights, sounds and special moments only the Rhine presents. Stops on the way include Strasbourg, France with its delectable pate de foie gras and Cologne, Germany with its exciting markets, fantastic foods, the aweinspiring cathedral, and expert crafted cutlery to take home for the kitchen and other one-of-a-kind items to procure.

Every epic journey should include a bit of time pre- and post-Christmas Markets Cruise. For one, it’s a good idea to arrive in Europe a few days ahead of schedule to get acclimated to the time zone. In addition, it’s always a bonus to spend moments in each city or town visited to dip one’s toe in the local atmosphere before setting sail. One of my most recommended spots is Munich with a visit to their Christmas Markets, their Biergarten, and yes, the surfing river (even in winter).

And if you fancy, Paris is always a good idea – especially at this time of year. Finishing a Christmas Markets trip with a jaunt to Paris is, in a word – BRILLIANT! From the fabulous lights and Michelin star dining to the spectacle of all stores – Galeries Lafayette, your eyes will be filled with all the wonders of the season.

Whether your trip to Christmas Markets has you traversing the Danube, the Rhine or both, make sure you do it and do it well. It will be the pinnacle of Christmas gifts to yourself!

Cheers to an upcoming bright and magical Holiday Season.

FOODIE

TASTE OF THE TOWN

BAKED BRIE IN PUFFED PASTRY

INGREDIENTS

1 puff pastry sheet, defrosted if frozen 8 ounces brie, (1 cheese wheel)

all-purpose flour, for dusting ¼ cranberry sauce, or fig, or strawberry jam

½ teaspoon chopped rosemary ½ teaspoon chopped thyme

1 large egg 1tablespoon water ¼ cup walnuts, or pecans, roughly chopped 1 tablespoon honey

DIRECTIONS

Set the oven rack to the middle position. Heat to 400ºF (190ºC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.

Remove the frozen pastry from its packaging and defrost it on a sheet tray on the countertop until it is cool but pliable, about 40 minutes. If not using right away, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water, set aside.

Place defrosted puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. If the pastry surface feels sticky, lightly dust it with flour. Use a rolling pin to gently roll out into an 11-inch square. Don’t press too hard or the puff pastry layers will fuse together.

Evenly spread the cranberry sauce on top. Sprinkle the rosemary and thyme, followed by the chopped walnuts. Drizzle some honey on top.

Bring one corner of the pastry up and over the brie, brush with egg wash. Continue to wrap the brie, creating a pleated design, pressing down the sides to remove any air, and brushing the pastry to help it stick. Gently press the edges and top to secure.

Brush the top and sides with the egg wash.

Make shallow scores on the surface, about ½-inch apart and about 1-inch long to create vents. This allows steam to escape so that the surface doesn’t get too puffy.

Bake until the surface is golden brown and crisp, about 30 to 35 minutes.

Cool on the baking sheet for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve warm with crackers, baguettes, crostini, or fruit.

PRIME RIB ROAST

INGREDIENTS

1 (6 pound) boneless prime rib roast

2 tablespoons prepared horseradish

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

2 teaspoons kosher salt

2 teaspoons coarsely ground black pepper

2 teaspoons dried thyme

2 teaspoons garlic powder

2 stalks celery, cut into 2-inch pieces

1 carrot, cut into 2-inch pieces

1 small, unpeeled onion, quartered and separated

2 teaspoons concentrated beef base (paste)

1 ½ cups water

1 teaspoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon water

DIRECTIONS

The day before serving, remove the roast from the package and dry thoroughly with paper towels. Set the roast on a baking sheet and place in refrigerator overnight. Remove from the refrigerator 1 hour before cooking time to allow meat to reach room temperature. Rub the roast all over with horseradish and Dijon mustard. In a bowl, mix together the kosher salt, black pepper, thyme and garlic powder; sprinkle the spice mix over the roast.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Place the celery, carrot, and onion pieces into the bottom of a roasting pan. Place the roast on top of the vegetables.

Roast for 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F, and roast until the meat is browned and an instant-read meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the roast reads 130 to 135 degrees F for medium-rare. Remove from the oven, transfer the roast to a platter, and cover with a tent of aluminum foil. Allow to rest for 30 minutes. The temperature of the meat will rise about 10 degrees during resting time.

To make au jus sauce, skim excess fat from the pan drippings in the roasting pan. Place the pan over a burner set to medium heat and stir in the beef base and 1 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a boil, scraping and dissolving any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the pan. Strain out and discard the vegetables. Combine the cornstarch and 1 teaspoon of water in a small bowl and whisk the mixture into the sauce. Allow the sauce to thicken slightly (sauce will be thin), pour into a gravy boat, and serve with roast.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING

INGREDIENTS

1 pound (3 to 3 1/2 cups) mixed dried fruit

1/2 cup mixed candied fruit peel, finely chopped

1 small apple, peeled, cored, and finely chopped

1 tablespoon orange zest

1/2 tablespoon lemon zest

2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup brandy, more as needed

1/2 cup self-rising flour, sifted

1 teaspoon ground mixed spice

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 cup beef or vegetarian suet, shredded

2/3 cup dark brown sugar, packed

1 cup fresh breadcrumbs

1/4 cup almonds, coarsely chopped

2 large eggs

DIRECTIONS

Place the dried fruit, candied peel, apple, and orange and lemon zests and juices into a large mixing bowl. Add the brandy and stir well. Cover the bowl with a clean tea towel and leave to marinate for a couple of hours, preferably overnight.

Lightly butter a 2 1/2-pint pudding basin.

In a very large mixing bowl, stir the flour, mixed spice and cinnamon together. Add the suet, sugar, breadcrumbs and almonds, and stir again until all the ingredients are well mixed. Add the marinated dried fruits and stir again.

In a small bowl, beat the eggs lightly, then stir quickly into the dry ingredients. The mixture should have a fairly soft consistency.

Spoon the mixture into the greased pudding basin, gently pressing the mixture down with the back of a spoon. Cover with a double layer of greaseproof paper or baking parchment, then a layer of aluminum foil. Tie securely with string, wrapping the string around the basin, then loop over the top and then around the bowl again. This will form a handle, which will be useful when removing the pudding from the steamer.

Set a steamer over a saucepan of simmering water, place the pudding in the steamer, and steam the pudding for 7 hours. Make sure you check the water level frequently, so it never boils dry. The pudding should be a dark brown color when cooked.

Remove the pudding from the steamer and cool completely. Remove the paper, prick the pudding with a skewer in a few places, and pour in a little extra brandy.

Cover with fresh greaseproof paper and retie with string.

Store for at least 4 to 5 weeks in a cool, dry place until Christmas Day. On Christmas Day, reheat the pudding by steaming again for about an hour.

MIXOLOGY

TIPSY TEMPTATIONS

“PUNCH OF HEALTH”

Glassware: Punch Bowl, with rocks or punch glasses

Ingredients:

1 part Redwood Empire Lost Monarch Blended Whiskey

½ part Mathilde Poire Liqueur

2-part Hot Apple Cider

¼ part Lemon Juice

¼ part Ghirardelli Caramel Syrup

Garnish: Grated Nutmeg and Lemon Wheel

Heat apple cider to a simmer over medium-low heat. Combine all other ingredients in a punch bowl and stir to mix. Add hot cider, and then stir until the syrup fully dissolves. Garnish, serve and enjoy!

As the adage goes – an apple a day keeps the doctor away – and raising a glass to your health is exactly what the doctor orders this holiday season. This classically coined cocktail is an easy crowd pleaser made to impress this season of celebration. The backbone of the tempting tipple is clearly whiskey. Blended American whiskey – a little sweet, a little spice – is exactly what everyone loves in a great drink, especially during the holiday season. Winter fruit flavors of apple and pear add body, and the sweet treat of caramel, tempts the tastebuds. This holiday raise a glass. Raise more than one! And salute the health of those you love. A great Punch of Health is always a good start.

85

“PUNCH OF WEALTH”

Glassware: Punch Bowl and Punch Glass

Ingredients:

1 part Pierre Ferrand 1840

1 part Cuvee Jean Louis

¼ part Grapefruit Juice

½ part Cranberry Juice

¼ Cinnamon Syrup

Garnish: Cranberries and Grapefruit points

Combine ingredients into a punch bowl and stir until fully mixed. Add ice and stir to light chill. Garnish, serve and enjoy!

Health and wealth is always the classic toast. They are tried and true themes that we all wish for those we care about. The holidays are no different. Wealth can come in many forms such as a great drink with friends. That can be equal to all the wealth in the world. This decadent cocktail starts with the ancient elixir of kings and queens, Cognac. Pierre Ferrand, an ancient artisanal cognac, creates a very easy and delicious foundation. Floral and elegant, the cognac has body, yet no rough points, which makes it easy to explain its longevity. To heighten the sense of the holiday, classic flavor pairings of cinnamon and grapefruit add sour and spice that reminisce of a kitchen full of holiday essence. Cranberry adds a little tart and sweet, rounding the drink out. The holiday symphony is complete by adding the Jean Louis Cuvee. Bright and dry, it adds the perfect touch to make any cocktail truly worth its weight in gold. This season, toast to everyone, and they will appreciate a touch of the “Punch of Wealth.”

87

“PUNCH OF PROSPERITY”

Glassware: Punch Bowl and Hot Tea Glass

Ingredients:

1 part Plantation O.F.T.D.

1 ½ part Cotton and Reed All Spice Dram

¼ Lime Juice

¼ Brown Sugar Syrup

3 parts Hot Tea

Garnish: Angostura Bitters and Mint Leaf

Combine all ingredients, except tea, into a punch bowl and stir to mix. Add hot tea and then stir until the syrup fully dissolves. Garnish, serve and enjoy!

Health and wealth are toasted throughout the holiday season, as is prosperity. The truest of all statements “live long and prosper” is part of holiday celebrations. In ancient times, an adult libation was used to treat wounds, kill disease, provide a source of income, and was a communal source of prosperity. This cocktail follows suit with tradition, harkening back to what may be the oldest spirit in tradition, rum. We start with Plantation OFTD, 69% abv that is sure to eliminate any internal ailments. Holiday spices are added through a DC native distillery, Cotton and Reed, showcasing their all-spice dram (another favorite spice known for longevity). Sugar and citrus create a balanced beverage, and the perfect finishing touch is hot tea. Soothing and relaxing, the tea brings every ingredient together, for that perfect Prosperity Punch toast.

PROVOKING THE IMAGINATION

90 JOHN ERIC HOME
LEONID AFREMOV

Leonid Afremov was one of the most distinguished contemporary artists known for his unusual painting manner and the powerful emotional impact his artworks have on a human soul. A Mexican-Israeli modern impressionistic artist, he worked mainly with a palette knife and oils. He developed his own unique technique and style which is unmistakable and cannot be confused with other artists. Afremov painted mainly landscapes, city scenes, seascapes, flowers and portraits.

Before the advancement of online sales, Afremov was a struggling artist. He was born in Vitebsk, Belarus, and lived there until 1990. Between 1990 and 2002 he lived in Israel, and from 2002 to 2010 in Boca Raton, Florida. In 2010 Leonid moved to the popular resort town of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico as a place for retirement and teaching inspiring young artists that later became known as Afremov Studio.

New York is my adopted home. I first visited New York in 1978 when I was a teenager. We had flown halfway across the world, made it through the chaos of JFK, and arrived past midnight, exhausted and jet-lagged, to the bright lights and hustle and bustle of Manhattan. It was love at first sight. I could hardly contain myself in my skin. Despite the severe jet lag, I could not waste a moment on mere sleep when every corner of the city, with grit and all, was a universe waiting to be explored. That’s when I first dreamed of one day living in this city.

Many years later, almost exactly twenty-seven years ago, after having lived in all corners of the U.S., from Florida to California to various beautiful & quaint college towns, I moved here, to my home, and I never looked back. For me New York represents “possibility.” Its streetscapes are energizing. The city is full of promise: around every corner I may find something curious, run into a friend, maybe a long-lost one. Or I may make a new friend, or experience something unique, interesting, extraordinary.

While excruciatingly hard to single out a few “favorite spots”, here are some of my beloved ones in this amazing city…

I live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, close to Central Park, and along Museum Mile , where within 10 blocks, you can enjoy three of the finest museums in the world: the distinctive Guggenheim, the intimately fabulous Neue Gallery, and the extraordinary Metropolitan Museum of Art. A visit to at least one, preferably all three, along with MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in midtown, and the Whitney Museum located in the Meatpacking District, is a must.

Exquisite art, in these inimitable institutions, from classic Greek, Roman, Near Eastern, Asian, African, American, and Egyptian art, to modern and contemporary art, to emerging artist showcases is true nourishment for the soul. The holiday gift shops of all these museums have the most unique gifts inspired by diverse art spanning the ages, cultures, and styles. Don’t miss a visit to these gift shops.

Central Park is a remarkable sanctuary with its marvelous walking, running and bike paths that meander through exquisite nature. A favorite spot in Central Park? The Reservoir. Officially called the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

92 JOHN ERIC HOME
New York THERE IS NOWHERE LIKE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Reservoir, the walking/running path around it spans almost the width of the park and affords the visitor some of the most beautiful views of the city: from magnificent skyline views looking south, where soaring residential towers dwarf such classic icons as the Empire State Building – dressed in its holiday lights – and the Chrysler Building. Then there is the grand architecture along Central Park West – including the double towers of the Eldorado – and the octagonal towers of the majestic Beresford, which is an Emery Roth masterpiece. Finally, the posh buildings lining world famous Fifth Avenue come into view as well.

Another New York favorite of mine is right outside my doors: Madison Avenue. This renowned avenue is a chic hub of some of the world’s most exclusive designer boutiques, restaurants, galleries, and so much more. Adorned with sparkling white holiday lights, a stroll along Madison Avenue will be a feast for the eyes, especially during this season when shop windows are decorated with the most magnificent holiday-inspired displays.

A meal in any one of the exclusive restaurants along Madison Avenue, while not light on the pocketbook, will surely be a feast for the taste buds. Daytime favorites here include: breakfast at Sabarsky cafe (located in the Neue Gallery), hot cappuccino at St. Ambroes, lunch at The Mark, afternoon refreshment at Via Quadrono where you can taste a scoop of delicious gelato, or tea at Lady M accompanied with a slice of their exquisite ‘Mille Crepes’ cake. For cocktail hour, head

straight to Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle! You may have to brave a line, but patience will pay off. Take in the gorgeous murals, the energy and vibe of the crowd, and of course the live piano music, that for the season will include classic holiday tunes.

For dinner, head downtown. Limitless choices of great, cool spots with fabulous food await you. The choice depends on what you’re in the mood for. If I had to choose one spot where I’m almost always in the mood for, holiday or not, it would be Pastis in the meatpacking district. It’s a cool spot frequented by the chic and the “in” downtown crowd, serving delicious French bistro fare. If the weather is nice, for drinks and to soak in sparkling downtown views, the Restoration Hardware rooftop is fabulous.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

YOUR BEST
SELF
Holiday Planning
People
Food Drinks Table

Where you choose to put your focus is crucial to how you experience a situation. It’s about to be the holiday season and while for some Thanksgiving and Christmas can’t come soon enough, for others these holidays can be a source of stress. A lot of planning and organization is required to host and entertain and sometimes house family and friends. Then, there’s the added pressure to purchase and wrap gifts. So, if you find yourself starting to panic, you are not alone! The best way to manage this (or indeed any potentially stressful situation) is to first notice and name the feelings and then set out to create an action plan for yourself.

Creating an action plan will help you to break down the challenge into manageable chunks and allow you to prioritize. Rather than looking at everything you need to accomplish pile up into one insurmountable wall, you can tackle a small piece at a time which immediately alleviates stress and anxiety.

A good place to start is visualizing the perfect or desired outcome. Whether it’s Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas shopping or holiday travel, find a quiet place to close your eyes and immerse yourself in the images of your event playing out perfectly. What does it look like? Who is there? What are you eating and drinking? What roles are people playing? Spend as much time as you need until you have a really clear picture of what you want to achieve. Then take a deep breath and slowly come back to reality ready to begin that action plan.

The next step in creating your holiday action plan revolves a little reverse engineering. Let’s say your visualization was of a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner. We will break that dinner down into categories:

FOOD

• What food did you picture?

• Which stores do I need to visit to purchase what I need?

• If it’s multiple stores, can I group the stores and create

an optimal route to minimize travel time and make myself more efficient?

• What can I buy now that won’t expire? What do I need to buy the week before? What do I need to buy the day before?

DRINKS

• What can I buy in advance?

• Who was drinking what in my visualization?

TABLE

• Do I need to buy table decorations?

• If so, where do I purchase them from?

• Can I buy on-line, or do I need to go to a store?

• If I need to go to a store can this be part of the planned route when I go to purchase food?

PEOPLE

• Who can I ask for help?

• Can I delegate different dishes to various guests?

• Who can I ask to help me serve or clear dishes?

• Who is most definitely not going to help, even if asked? (As much as this is annoying, managing expectations in advance can help on the day – make the task so simple or easy that they can’t say no and are able to claim that they did something!)

By mapping out the event and then working in reverse to take care of each detail, you can build a timeline with a manageable workload so your holiday planning does not become overwhelming. You can of course apply this approach to any task, but now is as good a time as any to practice so that your perfect holiday visualization plays out just as you imagined it.

Happy Holiday Planning!

MONEY & FINANCE

MONEY SENSE

LONG-TERM CARE AND DISABILITY PLANNING FOR

A not too pleasant to talk about subject is disability and long-term care illness. It is something that you hope never happens to you or your family, but in real life things can and do happen that can derail plans for a normal life. Here are some things to think about to protect you and your family from the financial burdens that an illness or injury can cause.

One day you’re healthy, working and enjoying life and then in a split second, you’re dealt a blow. An accident or illness takes some or all your abilities away to do the dayto-day things that we all take for granted. The topic of this discussion is the planning that you need to consider to keep your present lifestyle as much as possible and also to avoid becoming a burden to your loved ones and friends.

The first thing to do as soon as you start working is to get as much disability income insurance as possible. Most employers provide 60% of your salary as a disability benefit. Unfortunately, most of the company benefits are fully paid for by the employer and because of that, that particular benefit becomes fully taxable to you if you become disabled and collect on that benefit. This becomes an issue because even though you are getting 60% of your income, the tax may be 30% or more. Meaning, you will be living on less than half of what you were making while you were working. And, you most likely will have more medical and other expenses.

There are a few things that you should do while working and still in good health. The first thing to do is to check with your employer and see if they will tax you on the premium of the disability benefit that they are paying for. If you are taxed on that premium, then the benefit becomes tax free and your 60% will be close to your after-tax income while you were working. Another thing that you should do is to look at buying additional disability insurance either from your employers group plan or by purchasing an individual disability plan through an insurance broker or financial planner that is knowledgeable about disability insurance.

Most group plans cap their benefit at $10,000 to $15,000 per month. If your income is greater than $200,000 you should definitely consider purchasing as much disability as you can to protect your earning power and cover the extra expenses that a long-term health condition will cause.

Having done financial planning for many years, I have seen the impact on people that have been fortunate enough

to have had the maximum amount of disability insurance. In the case of a high-powered attorney, it eased the recovery by not having to worry about finances. It made a huge difference in the quality of life and the ability to heal without the stress of financial pressure.

The other item that is important for people that are older and are either not working or are near the end of their career is long term care planning. If you are on Medicare, there is very limited coverage for long term care. And there is almost no coverage for home health care. Some care is available for the first 100 days following a hospitalization, but after that there is no further coverage and all expenses for care would be your responsibility. If and as long as you have assets, you will be required to pay for your care. The solution is to purchase a long-term care policy. The cost for the coverage is not inexpensive. But it may be worth considering purchasing a base line of coverage in case something happens to you that requires long term health services. If you do purchase a policy, you want to get one that has home health care provisions.

Please feel free to email me and I can help you discuss these issues, and we can determine what will be the best option in your case.

FASHION FORWARD

Hard to believe, but it’s almost 2023! Ringing in the New Year should be fun, chic, and glamorous. If you are headed out to a large NYE party or an intimate gathering – dress it up and welcome the New Year in style! Here are this year’s NYE trends…

To sequin or not… You can never go wrong with a sequined dress. The holiday season is the one time you can go super glam, and you won’t be considered over-dressed. So go for it!

Lace it up…

Lace gives a very feminine vibe. If you are headed to an elegant party, this year it’s all about black lace cocktail dresses. Expect them to make stunning appearances all over this festive season.

Slip it on…

One of the biggest trends in dresses this winter season is a slip dress. Fashionistas are sporting them like crazy right now and will continue to do so through the holidays.

Red isn’t just for Santa… Yes – red is spilling over into hot NYE fashion trends. It’s bold and sexy and rings in the New Year with a certain amount of je ne sais quoi.

Shearling anyone?

This season, the iconic shearling jacket has emerged from being a straightforward menswear closet fixture to one of the main actors on the catwalks. A very classy jacket to welcome in 2023.

Vroom Vroom…

This season is turning men’s fashion upside down. The biggest comeback is the biker trend. A plethora of leather racing jackets, gloves and protective pants are hot on the scene. If you choose this trend to usher in the New Year, heads will certainly turn.

This skirt isn’t your sister’s…

By now, you can’t have missed it. Skirts are the most popular item worn by men on the catwalk and have migrated from women’s to men’s wear runways. They’re the most frequent item seen at shows these days. Do you dare to sport a skirt to ring in the New Year?

Stay classic…

You just simply can’t go wrong with a classic suit. A beautiful cut from gorgeous fabric is really what it is all about. If you aren’t into trends – no fear – wear a classic suit, hoist that glass of champagne and sing away to Auld Lang Syne. You’ll be timeless!

GIFTS HOLIDAY For the Traveler

Looking for a great gift for a friend or family member who is always on the move? Here are a few options that might impress…

Vapur 1-Liter Wide-Mouth Anti-Bottle

This foldable, washable anti-bottle that can be reduced (when empty) to the size of an iPhone. A light packer’s dream, the size adjusts to the amount of water that’s in it, so it can easily fit into any bag.

Browint Silk Sleep Sack

Not just for germaphobes, this Mulberry silk sleep sack is a miracle solution to questionably clean hotel and Airbnb sheets. The machine-washable sack rolls up into a pouch the size of a burrito for easy portability, and it has a pocket where you can insert a pillow.

Radius Tour Travel Toothbrush

It unfolds into a full-size toothbrush and folds down into thirds, with a “roomy” chamber that protects the bristles from debris without trapping moisture.

Loops Variety Loop

Skin hydration! So easy to forget when off on great adventures. This set has 5 different masks for 5 different skin moments.

Air Carrier Gift Card

One of the best things you can give a frequent traveler is the gift of … more travel. Many airlines offer them – such as American Airlines.

BUZZ

POTTERY BARN

Pottery Barn appears to be readying a new location at Mosaic District in Merrifield, taking a large space that’s struggled to hold tenants in recent years.

The Williams-Sonoma Inc.-owned home furnishings and decor chain will open at 2905 District Ave., Suite 100, according to building permits and contracting leads. The roughly 15,200-square-foot space was last occupied by GreatGatherings, a game room and outdoor furniture retailer that shuttered all its stores in 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic. GreatGatherings is now owned and operated by Offenbachers and its products are sold in Offenbachers’ showrooms. (WBJ)

TACO BELL

The new Taco Bell Cantina at 2039 Wilson Boulevard in Courthouse is aiming for a December opening. The location looks — at least in part — to be an effort to appeal to the late-night, hungry crowds leaving the nearby bars. The main difference between a regular Taco Bell and a Taco Bell Cantina is that the Cantina sells alcohol, including beer, wine, sangria and — just in time for the cold winter months — brightly colored frozen cocktails called “Twisted Freezes.” (ARLnow)

TRAFFIC CAMERA

The District’s many traffic cameras are well-known for slapping drivers with steep fines for everything from speeding to running a red light, but under a new bill introduced in the D.C. Council they’d also be able to issue something else: points. The bill, authored by Councilmember Christina Henderson (I-At Large), would ramp up the consequences for a number of traffic violations by allowing the city to use its cameras to do what police officers can already do when they pull someone over, which is assess points on their driver’s license. Currently, a driver who gets between 10 and 11 points can have their driving privileges suspended for up to 90 days, while 12 points or above will get a license revoked. While traffic cameras can catch drivers committing many of the same infractions, they only have the ability to assess fines. (Dcist)

PICKLE PIZZA

Pizza toppings can be a topic for debate for many, with some vying for pineapples, others standing up for anchovies and a few swearing by black olives. However you take your pie, there’s always room for experimentation from the classic tomato sauce, cheese and optional pepperoni toppings.

For local institution Pizzeria Paradiso, experimentation is an everyday occurrence — so much so that they’ve jumped on the pickle bandwagon. Pickles have made a grand entrance on a brand new, limited-time special at all Pizzeria Paradiso locations. (WTOP)

This private, gated Kilauea Plantation riverfront estate is located on 13.27 lush acres and was built in 1942. It was the first, largest and most elaborate stone-walled residence built on the plantation at that time. Field lava rock was transported via plantation railroad for the construction and many field rocks, weighing over 2,000 pounds each, were used to construct the massive two-foot deep walls, the 2 large ‘walk-in’ fireplaces, the columns for the 10-foot-wide covered lanais running the length of the house and the columns for the 2 grand Porte Cocheres. The unique ‘butterfly design’ of the main house adapts to the climate and the informal lifestyle of Hawaii.

MACKALL FARMS MCLEAN VIRGINIA

SOLD

Since its inception, when Artisan Builders introduced the 2005 Southern Accents Showhome, we have been crafting innovative homes to McLean and Great Falls clients. Each year we have striven to offer new designs that are fresh and timeless. Today, after 15 years, we present the 2020 Aspire Showhome, offering a modern design inspired by the Renaissance Architecture of Andrea Palladio. The floor plan brings together everything Artisan has learned over these 15 years from listening to its clients, the market and its architect, Harrison Associates. The spaces are light filled, complimented not only with large floor to ceiling windows, but inspired by Palladio, light from the sky above. The floor plan is open while still appreciating the need for privacy and elegant entertaining, and with the Main Level Owner’s Suite a seamless visual connection to the manicured landscaped rear yard. The museum quality craftsmanship is also a reflection of our experience, and you will notice this in every detail inside and outside the home. We are proud to call the Aspire Showhome, an Artisan Masterpiece.
