THE LAKES INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL 2016

CRIKEY, it’s our fourth festival already! I’m a self-confessed festival addict: audiences and creators meeting in one place for a short time to share their passion, curiosity, ideas and more is addictive. I’ve also organised an obscenely wide range of festivals and events over the years, but The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is the most personal and, perhaps, closest to my heart. The spark was my now 18-year-old son’s obsession, an Asperger’s one at that, with comics. I had always been interested in comics but would never claim to be an expert, whatever that means. The idea of a different kind of comic art event and in the Lakes seemed like a good one. The spark was ignited when a throwaway question, ‘what about a comic art festival up here?’, to a recently-made local friend, Sean Phillips, was met with a ‘yeah, sounds like a good idea’ which led to recruiting some incredible guests (as I now truly appreciate!) courtesy of Sean Phillips and founder patron, Bryan Talbot, in our first year. And from there, the rest, as they say, is history. The point of this introduction is to tell you that I have fallen in love with comic art, its creators and audiences. They are some of the most talented, prolific, generous, challenging, witty and strange people I have ever met and worked with, and all of this can be seen in the range and quality of the work they produce. The impact comic art has on people’s lives and the world is not yet fully appreciated by those who decide what art is ‘valid’ and, therefore, what is worthy of time and support. Our mission is to change this so the festival acts as a showcase and celebration of the very best comic art has to offer. Last, but not least, a massive thank you to all our funders, supporters and partners listed in this programme, and to you, the audiences and participants, without whom we wouldn’t be here.

Julie Tait Director, LICAF

CELEBRATING COMIC ART FROM ACROSS THE WORLD We have an incredible line-up this year and such a lot of comic brilliance to pack into one weekend. Here’s a festival snapshot to whet your appetitive. Welcome to comic art heaven!

Support us (please)

42

We have comic artists joining us from Japan, Canada, Australia, Finland, as well as European comic creators. This is also an amazing showcase for the UK’s thriving comic art scene. There really is something for everyone, whether you are a superhero fan, mad about Manga or just love seeing incredibly talented artists at work.

Thank you

43

There will be more than 70 special guests from across the comic world as well as some incredible exhibitions too. The Family Zone is packed with activities to let your imagination run wild and don’t miss the Windows Comic Art Trail as you wander around Kendal. The free Comics Clock Tower, open Saturday and Sunday all-day, is full of independent creators, publishers and retailers, representing a wide range of comics from around the world. We’re also honoured to be announcing the new Comic Laureate for 2016-17 at the festival on the opening night! And if that’s not enough, make sure you seek refreshment in our Kick-Ass styled bar at Ruskins. Phew… and that’s just a taster. Use this festival guide to plan your perfect comic art inspired weekender!

TOP PICKS & FRIDAY 14 OCTOBER 2016 EVENTS LIST

FRIDAY 14 OCTOBER - OPENING EVENTS

ASTERIX VS TINTIN

CLASH OF THE TOON TITANS Beatles or Stones? DC or Marvel? Connery or Moore? These are questions that divide the nation. Now for the comic art biggie: Asterix or Tintin?

BAC Theatre, 7.00 - 8.15pm All tickets £4 thanks to Lancaster University

LICAF opens this year in dramatic style, bringing together two top teams to slug it out on stage to settle this debate for good. Putting the case forward for Tintin is Dr Benoît Peeters, a novelist, philosopher, and Professor of Comics at Lancaster University; while presenting the arguments for Asterix is BAFTA award-winning producer, Peter Kessler. Joining the Tintin vs Asterix comic art clash are Walking Dead artist, Charlie Adlard; comic book writer, Leah Moore; Australian comics scholar and creator, Stuart Medley; and VIZ creator, Graham Dury. On screen there will be a host of comic artists, authors and readers with the ever-popular Hannah Berry acting as referee. All the way from Los Angeles special festival guests, Luke and Steve McGarry, bring their fast-draw cartooning talents to illustrate the event. This epic opening evening will conclude with the announcement of the second UK Comics Laureate for 2017 with its first incumbent, Dave Gibbons, handing over the baton. This opening event is courtesy of Lancaster University to inaugurate and celebrate Dr Benoît Peeters’ appointment as their first Professor of Comics.

Miyazaki has had a profound influence on creative minds across the world with the philosophy, unique storytelling and visual beauty of his films. Jonathan Edwards (UK), Ken Niimura (Japan), Bryan Lee O’Malley (Canada) and Emma Vieceli (UK) come together on stage for the first – and perhaps only – time to create an original piece of artwork before your eyes. The brief is simple: take any of Miyazaki’s films or characters as inspiration and draw! This magical live draw event will be hosted by Toronto Comic Art Festival Director Christopher-san (aka Christopher Butcher), a self-confessed Japanophile, who writes about comics and manga.

You’ll complete a one-page comic strip within the time allowed, as part of a symbolic competition that aims to foster a challenging atmosphere in order to bring out the best in each participant. Beginners and experts are welcome.

Virpi’s session will show you how comics have been used in the business world and how you can communicate a dull business concept with a quick sketch. Virpi blogs and draws about business topics at businessgoessocial. net and her website for visual work is businessillustrator.com

Front line reportage has arguably found its most powerful medium through comics. Proof of this may lie in an emerging project by prize-wining illustrator and comics creator, Olivier Kugler. During two commissions assigned by Medecins Sans Frontières, Olivier spent time with Syrian refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan and Greece. Working with multiple interviews and countless photographs, Oliver created a series of illustrations, which appeared in a range of publications, including Harper’s (USA), The Guardian (UK), Le Monde (France) and Internazionale (Italy).

Olivier is now working on a full-length graphic novel exploring refugees’ personal stories. At this special event, he’ll present and discuss work in progress with comic art commentator, editor and writer, John Freeman

Mick cites his favourite work as Decap Attack, in the British weekly Sonic the Comic, and has high hopes for Kestrels, an upcoming series of graphic novels with Ben Dickson.

Born in Dallas in 1940, Gilbert Shelton’s impact on underground comix cannot be underestimated. In 1968, after contributing to various publications with his earliest character Wonder Warthog, he created The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. Since 1975, Fat Freddy’s Cat has led a successful, independent life and Not Quite Dead, the world’s least successful rock band, has appeared in a series of comics. Today, almost 50 years later, The Freak Brothers go from strength to strength.

What makes a good drawing good? We all struggle with our own limitations as artists, but we can channel those limitations into strengths by understanding the purpose and function of an image.

Comics offer a different and special 6 reading experience. Some of the best adaptations have been bestsellers, breathing new life into stories and introducing new audiences to literary masterpieces.

Leah Moore has co-written series such as The Trial of Sherlock Holmes, Damsels and, most recently, for 2000AD’s Black Shuck with husband, John Reppion. John Reppion’s love of Victoriana, horror and weirdness, alongside his passion for research, has led to his comic adaptations of Lovecraft’s Shadow over Innsmouth, Stoker’s Dracula and even Lewis Carroll’s Alice books.

Independent publishing and selfpublishing isn’t just a means to critical acclaim, but to concrete, commercial success. Page 45’s biggest-selling graphic novel of 2015 was independently published, beating everything from DC which is owned by multi-millionaire mega-corps Time Warner, while their biggest-selling comic was self-published, outselling titles by Marvel, owned by multibillionaire Disney. With independent publishers, you can retain creative control and ownership and be nurtured like nowhere else, fostering long-lasting, personal relationships with retailers and review sites, which will prove invaluable throughout your career. Our panel will show you how: Ricky Miller (Director, Avery Hill Publishing), Katriona Chapman (self-publisher, freelancer for larger publishers and part of Avery Hill), Andy Oliver (Editorin-Chief at Broken Frontier pioneer review site and brand-new selfpublisher!) and Stephen L. Holland (Festival patron, Page 45, awardwinning comicbook retailer). Come and hear answers to the questions which you’ve yet to think of. In partnership with Page 45

2 3 4 5 6 This epic, historical fantasy anime film is written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Studio Ghibli and produced by Toshio Suzuki. Set in the late Miromachi period (13361573) in Japan, Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece depicts the clash between the natural world and its old gods and the rise of humans and the beginnings of modern civilisation. It shows three elements of the Japanese psyche warring for supremacy in an epic ecological fable of stirring mythic power.

A critical and commercial success, Princess Mononoke was the highest grossing film of all time in Japan until Titanic floated by later that year. It has more than stood the test of time becoming one of Studio Ghibli’s most revered films. THE WIZARDS OF OZ

GRAPHIC MEDICINE

Saturday and Sunday

Sunday only

Do the words ‘Australian comics’ spout a thought bubble above your head with a question mark in it? Blimey! Then here’s your chance to go down under (no more clichés, we promise) at the Australian Comics Corner.

Meet Dr Ian Williams, Paula Knight, Mike Medaglia from Jessica Kingsley Publisher/Singing Dragon and Myriad Editions to find out more about the current explosion of comics about medicine and healthrelated issues.

Here, we will have a selection of some of the best Australian comics to browse through and buy, along with some of the artists who make them. Attending will be Gregory Mackay (Anders and the Comet, Anders and the Volcano; Francis Bear), Bruce Mutard (The Sacrifice, The Silence, A Mind of Love), Tim McEwen, Laura Renfrew and Stuart Medley. The artists will be selling, drawing and making comics conversation throughout the weekend, so stop on by and say g’day (oops, sorry!).

MORE THAN THE MOOMINS Saturday and Sunday There’s much more to Finnish comics than the Moomins (as much as we love them and appreciate their global influence). Did you know that Finland is the third largest comic reading nation per capita in the world? It wouldn’t be a surprise to some if they visited this fascinating country and witnessed for themselves how much comics are respected and appreciated there. To whet your appetite, this year we’ve brought some of Finland’s leading creators to our festival. They feature in our main events programme, our Family Zone, our exhibitions programme and our workshop programme, too. Here you’ll be able to meet them over the weekend hosted by our wonderful partners at The Helsinki Comics Festival with whom we have started an exchange programme which we intend to grow in future years.

UN PETIT PEU… OF FRENCH Saturday from 2.00pm only Meet Pascal Mériaux, Director of the Amiens Comics Festival, and Riff Reb’s, one of France’s most acclaimed realist comic artists. Pascal has built a formidable comics organisation in Amiens (On a Marché sur la Bulle) which includes a resources centre, national and international touring educational and community projects, a prolific publishing arm (Les Éditions de la Gouttière) and an annual festival. One of his key creators and collaborators is Riff Reb’s and we are proud to announce that we will be launching one of their most popular children’s works in English at the festival this year, Carrot to the Stars (see pages 18-19 family zone). too. Here you’ll be able to meet them over the weekend hosted by our wonderful partners at The Helsinki Comics Festival with whom we have started an exchange programme which we intend to grow in future years.

Graphic Medicine explores the frontier between the medium of comics and healthcare, through autobiographical, fictional, and educational works: an area of study, a community, a movement for change. Come and meet authors, academics and publishers in this exciting new field.

WAKE UP TO WACOM Saturday from 2.00pm and Sunday until 1.00pm Your chance to play on a Cintiq (27QHD) and find out more about this much-coveted tool which has transformed the lives of many comic artists across the globe in recent years. Wacom’s vision is to bring people and technology closer together, and it’s the world’s leading manufacturer of interactive pen tablets and displays. The intuitive pen technology used in Wacom’s Cintiq® creative pen displays and Intuos Pro pen tablets makes creating digitally as natural as pen on paper. They have been used to create some of the most exciting digital art, films, special effects, fashion and designs around the world. These sessions will be informal drop-ins with someone on hand to offer you some tips, plus there’ll be the latest Bamboo Spark to play with too. Further information about Wacom and its products can be found at http://www.wacom.com

PORTRAITS OF VIOLENCE Saturday and Sunday from 2.00pm Introducing a new documentary-style illustrated book about violence, featuring 10 key thinkers on the issues of state violence, war and terrorism, including Noam Chomsky, Frantz Fanon and Judith Butler. With a text introduction by well-known cultural critic, Henry Giroux, it will be published by New Internationalist in November 2016. Portraits of Violence is a collaboration between Dr. Brad Evans (Founder and Director of the History of Violence Project at Bristol University) and Sean Michael Wilson, featuring artwork by a diverse range of artists: Scottish artists, Lorna Miller and Chris Mackenzie; Japanese manga artists, Inko and Michiru Morikawa; US artist, Carl Thompson; Vietnamese artist, Yen Quach; and English artists, Robert Brown and Samuel Williams. Meet Dr Brad Evans, Robert Brown and Dan RaymondBarker and find out more about this extraordinary project.

DISCOVER EVEN MORE COMICS AT THE SHAKESPEARE

ELECTRICOMICS Saturday until 1.00pm Electricomics is a self-publishing tool for digital comics that allows you to create innovative digital comics and publish them yourself. You can control your comics at panel level, create a reveal with each new image, or arrange whole pages. You can use a .gif file just as easily as a .jpg, which means you can incorporate moving images as easily as still ones. It’s free and what you make with it is up to you! Led by Leah Moore, working with her father, Alan Moore, this is an exciting and evolving new development which you’ll want to find out more about – and from the horse’s mouth. Leah will be ready to explain the potential of Electricomics and answer any questions you may have.

INTRODUCING THE OXFORD COMICS NETWORK Saturday and Sunday until 1.00pm October 2016 marks a bold new step for comics as an academic art form, and a new, even bolder, step for Britain’s most venerable university. Yes, it’s now possible to study comics at Oxford! The Oxford Comics Network is an initiative set up by The Oxford Research Centre for Humanities, or TORCH. TORCH exists to bring together different academic disciplines in special research projects. For comics, that means professors from English, Art, Modern Foreign Languages and Philosophy, all with an interest in this subject. The group is led by Research Fellow, Dominic Davies, with funding provided by Peter Kessler, one of LICAF’s board directors. OCN will meet fortnightly at first, focusing discussion on key texts from the comics history. The Network will also regularly welcome writers, artists and others involved with comics to talk and discuss their work. Longer term plans include an academic comics convention at Oxford and an exhibition of original comic art. OCN and LICAF clearly share many aims and beliefs about the value of comics.

TIME FOR COMIC ART TEA! MANHUA CHA Saturday and Sunday in the Courtyard Manhua Cha sell comic book-themed bubble tea. Instead of customers selecting what flavoured drinks they would like, customers pick their favourite superpowers and accessories, alongside the colour cape they prefer (blue is for a cold drink, red is for a hot). This gives the already iconic bubble tea a unique twist! What’s more, Manhua Cha members have written and self-published their own comic book to tie in with their brand and menu. Come and sample tea for one, two or more…

DO IT YOURSELF FESTIVAL MERCHANDISE No we’re not being lazy! We know Kendal will be brimming with creative types and control freaks who like to make their own way in life. So we’ve teamed up with local print-star, Ben Dodge, so you can take home some very special swag from our festival this year. Choose from a specially-created selection of festival designs, pick your tote bag and/or t-shirt and make your own unique souvenir in just a few minutes. Ben has worked with global brands, one-man bands and everything in between - taking in The Designers Republic, Usain Bolt and the BBC along the way. He’s taken his head out of the virtual cloud and fulfilled his longheld dream of owning his own screen printing studio at The Factory in Kendal, home of the Comic Art Festival too. He shares his inky love through running workshops and now at festivals and events too. Check out his prints too - they’re fantastic! www.bendodge.com

Get inside the head of internationally-acclaimed comic artist, Ken Niimura. Ken is winner of the Golden Prize in the 5th International Manga Award and was nominated for both Eisner and Eagle Awards for his work on I Kill Giants, created in collaboration with Joe Kelly. His illustration book, Zero, reveals both a rare and diverse talent, while Travelling and Henshin, both short story collections, display that intoxicating combination of fine art and strong storylines.

KEN NIIMURA

Born in Spain and currently living and working in Tokyo, Ken has a foot in both the European and Japanese comic art worlds, creating an exciting fusion of traditions and styles whilst conjuring up something seemingly unique. This exhibition features original art, brought to life through annotations and additional sketches on the walls of the Gallery. ‘Let me show you a selection of scenes where the unexpected lurks at the turn of each page and around each corner. This exhibition features original art from comics such as I Kill Giants and Henshin, for which I am best known, as well as work I have done for Marvel and DC Comics – and some unreleased work too.’ Ken Niimura

LICAF EXHIBITIONS

SILENCE/ HILJAISUUS

In war, the silent moments are often the most meaningful.

AN EXHIBITION OF ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL ART BY HANNERIINA MOISSEINEN (FINLAND).

The Wildman Gallery Wildman Street, Kendal 12 October – 12 November 2016 Opening Times

Festival 12 – 16 October: 10.00am - 5.00pm All other days: 11.00am-3.00pm Closed Mondays

FREE ADMISSION

Based on Hanneriina Moisseinen’s fourth graphic novel, Kannas / The Isthmus (Kreegah Bundolo 2016), which was heralded ‘the Magnum Opus of Finnish comics’ by Harri Römpötti, Helsingin Sanomat, this special installation consists of original artwork and archive photographs combined with an evocative soundtrack by Eero Grundström with guest musicians.

The story takes place in 1944, during World War Two, on the Karelian Isthmus where more than 400,000 people are forced to leave their homes for good. The only valuable property they are able to take with them is their cows. Besides the journey with the cows, the story also reveals the lesser-known psychological impact these wartime events had on the soldiers. In Finland, war-related literature has mostly avoided these tales but Hanneriina Moisseinen, known for her exposure of silent taboos, highlights them and uses the graphic novel art medium to breathtaking effect. Moisseinen has a fine arts background in drawing, sculpting and installation but is now best-known as a graphic novel artist. She also sings, and has debuted as a film director in 2014. She has had exhibitions in more than 15 countries across the world in art museums and galleries.

FIVE BRIDGES STORIES OF THE FLOOD MIKE MEDAGLIA, LISA WOYNARSKI & FAROKH SOLTANI

Kendal Museum, Kendal College 12 October – 19 November 2016 Opening Times

Festival 14 – 16 October: 10.00am - 4.00pm • All other days: 10.00am - 4.00pm Closed Sundays and Mondays A unique comics exhibition where the human stories of flooding are depicted through comics and brought to life in a dynamic audio performance. In December 2015, flooding hit Cumbria when the region suffered a year’s worth of rainfall in a single day. The River Kent breached its banks in Kendal, closing the town’s five bridges and flooding many local homes. Featuring five different stories of people that experienced the flooding, this exhibition tells the human stories behind the extreme weather event. Highlighting the wider picture of the interrelatedness of all human and nature relationships, these stories provide a human experience to the often abstract and complex issue of climate change. After experiencing the stories from the flood, audience members will have a chance to contribute their own responses, drawing a self-portrait and telling their own stories, adding to and growing the exhibition. Drawn by acclaimed comics artist Mike Medaglia with story by Lisa Woynarski and sound design by Farokh Soltani.

If you like to gamble, I tell you I’m your man. You win some, lose some, it’s all the same to me The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say, I don’t share your greed, the only card I need is the ace of spades, the ace of spades Motorhead As part of the University of Cumbria’s ongoing collaboration with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, the campus gallery in Carlisle will be playing host to PHONO+GRAPHIC, an exhibition of vinyl record covers designed by leading comic strip artists. The show, curated by comic-book supremo, Sean Phillips, has been touring the globe and will come to the University morphing into a new exhibition comprised of a mix of professional, tutor and student pieces (University of Cumbria BA Hons Illustration & BA Hons Graphic Design). The brief is to choose a song from an enticing list and work with the theme, feel, sound, and content of both lyrics and music to create a sequential visual narrative across one or two double-page spreads.

This year is the 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter – a literary and artistic icon who is synonymous with the English Lake District. Her books have sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and have been translated into over 35 languages. Beatrix Potter is without doubt one of the most beloved and influential storytellers and artists of all time. To mark this special anniversary, the Lakes International Comic Art Festival called on students of the arts to reinterpret and reimagine Beatrix Potter’s tales or characters. The leading student entries will be showcased as part of the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, at Kendal Library, from 7 – 28 October. The exhibition also includes Beatrix Potter inspired artworks by a number of highly acclaimed comic artists including ‘The Lake District For Comics and Quiet Imaginings’ by Charlie Adlard and ‘Captain Peter Rabbit of The Lakes International Rescue’ by Duncan Fegredo. Alongside additional creative comic art reimaginings by Hannah Berry, Luke McGarry and Rufus Dayglo. Luke McGarry is an illustrator, cartoonist, animator and designer and the creator behind the recent Star Wars-inspired Sad Chewie cartoons that quickly became an internet viral phenomenon. He, together with brother Joe, is the go-to designer for some of the biggest festivals and music promoters in the States and hascollaborated with, amongst others, Jack Black and Tenacious D. Sale of exclusive festival beer, Empress, by Mark Millar and Stuart Immonen, brewed locally by Bowness Bay especially for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. Empress is a compellingly crisp, deliciously dry hoppy blonde ale made using Lakeland water and dry hopped for extra flavour.

THE LAKES INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL 2016

FROM THE SUBLIME TO THE RIDICULOUS

MOVE OVER THELMA AND LOUISE! Brewery Arts Centre Gardens

Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October There are two new adventurers hitting the road, as cartoon pensioners, Doris and Ivor, set their Sat Nav for Kendal. Having climbed from the sketchbook of comic artist, Carol Hanson, during research with the Dementia and Imagination Programme, Doris and Ivor hope to celebrate humour, the need to live in the moment and to dispel the myths of ‘going a bit funny’. After a summer road trip incorporating paper picnics and cartoon camping, it’s now time to hit the high street as Carol recalls some favourite memories from her time with the study – it’s definitely been a journey! With cartoon installations also showcasing some of the participants’ artwork and brought to life with family-friendly animation, we hope you mirror, signal and manoeuvre down to the festival as they park their cartoon classic car and mingle with the crowd.

WILL HE GET AWAY WITH IT? A NEW MURAL BY MARTIN ROWSON Outside Ruskins Bar (Kick Ass @ Ruskins) Yard 2, off Stricklandgate

Late afternoon on Friday 14 October until around lunchtime on Saturday 15 October We are thrilled to welcome Martin Rowson as one of our main guests (see page 12 for his main event and page 16 for his masterclass). Martin is a multi-award winning cartoonist and writer whose work over the past thirty years has appeared regularly in The Guardian, The Times, The Daily Mirror and more. He has been Chair of the British Cartoonists’ Association and Cartoonist Laureate to the former Mayor of London (Ken Livingstone). In Who’s Who, his interests are cited as ‘cooking, drinking, ranting, atheism, zoos and collecting taxidermy.’ Well, Martin intends to leave his mark on Kendal – in more ways than one! From sometime late on Friday afternoon until sometime around Saturday lunchtime, Martin will be let loose just outside Ruskins Bar (Kick Ass @ Ruskins), Yard 2 Off Stricklandgate to make a festival statement all of his own. Come down and see if you think Martin can get away with it!

UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA

24-HOUR COMIC RELAY At a secret location

3.00pm Thursday 13 October until 3.00pm Friday 14 October Returning to the festival this year for the third time is the 24-hour comic marathon – but this year, there’s a twist. Rather than artists each creating a 24-page comic, multiple artists will collaborate to create a single 24-page comic in 24 hours. With a script by talented writer, Alex Paknadel (Arcadia, Turncoat), and Dan Watters (Limbo), the story will be themed around living with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The comic will again be edited by the 24-hour marathon veteran, Dan Berry, to be printed and sold at the festival in order to support the charity, OCD Action. The Comic Relay will take place between 3.00pm Thursday 13 October and 3.00pm Friday 14 October at a secret location, with the subsequent comic launched and on sale in Page 45’s room, Comics Clocktower, from 3.00pm Saturday 15 October. OCD is a severe disorder but it is treatable. OCD Action is the largest national charity focusing on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). They provide support and information to anybody affected by OCD, work to raise awareness of the disorder amongst the public and front-line healthcare workers, and strive to secure a better deal for people with OCD. www.ocdaction.org.uk.

Morrisons Supermarket, Queen Katherines Avenue, Kendal Friday 14 October 2016 11.00am - 5.00pm

Joe Decie will be spending the day drawing supermarket inspired comics, documenting the hustle and bustle of everyone’s favourite pastime. Watch him ponder the exciting things on offer, the thrill of the Buy One Get One Free, how to choose the fastest queue, understand the difference between bicarbonate of soda and baking powder. Can I have a price check on a bag of limes please, Carol? Clean up to aisle three. Do I really need this multipack of alphabetti spaghetti? And as if that wasn’t enough supermarket-themed fun A Seriously Special Supermarket Superhero Treasure Hunt will take place throughout the weekend. Who will you find in store? Who did you see in: Fruit and Vegetables? Fish Bar? Oven Baked? Salad Bar? Bakery? Cake Shop? Butchery? Deli? Food Hall?

SUNDAY SERVICE FOR COMIC ART: SUPERHEROES AND THE QUEST FOR PEACE Kendal Unitarian Chapel, Branthwaite Brow, Market Place, Kendal LA9 4TN Sunday 16 October 11.00am Cartoonist John Pickering leads a service at Kendal Unitarian Chapel embracing the Spirit of Creativity, Humour and Comic Art and the inspiration for Hope, Justice and Peace in the world. All welcome. Free tea/coffee and biscuits afterwards.

FROM THE SUBLINE TO THE REDICULOUS

LICAF IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST OCTOBER!

You may think that LICAF is ‘just’ a weekend festival in October but it has become much more than that and now a growing, year-round programme of activity. Here’s a very brief overview of what we’re up to. You can find out more on our website and by subscribing to our newsletter.

COMMISSIONING

INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS

LICAF has developed a commissioning programme since 2014 supported by Arts Council England and working with a host of partners both in this country and further afield. To date these have included :-

Linked to our commissioning programme are country themes and partnerships. The outcomes include representation at key comic art festivals in other countries which are often reciprocated by the festival and some of the commissioned artists we are working with. Some are joint initiatives such as exhibitions, publications and performances. We also “broker” artist residencies and exchanges and more... Our current key partnerships are as follows:

1. 24 x 7 - seven original 24 page comics and anthology (Eisner award shortlisted in 2016) 2. The Homesick Truant’s Cumbria Yarn by Oliver East - 10 comics, 10 giant murals and an exhibition 3. Drawing on Japan - Jonathan Edwards and Louise Evans - sketchbook, exhibition and education residency 4. Three Rooms in Valerie’s Head by Dan Berry and David Gaffney - comic and performance piece 5. 2015 24 hour comic marathon – six original 24 page comics 6. Take Me Back to Manchester - Oliver East - comic, exhibition and short film

1. The Toronto Comic Art Festival in Canada taking place each May 2. The Amiens Comics Festival in France taking place each June 3. The Helsinki Comics Festival in Finland taking place each August 4. Various partnerships in Japan including with The International Manga Museum in Kyoto, the new Comic Art Tokyo festival and Black Hook Press

7. Black Dog - The Dreams of Paul Nash by Dave McKean - comic (with special artist’s editions) and performance piece

5. Representative bodies and foundations including The Finnish Institute in London, Institut Francais in London/Paris, Wallonie Bruxelles International in London, The Japan Foundation in London

8. Five Bridges by Mike Medaglia & Lisa Woynarski - installation piece with comic art and audio

Plus emerging partnerships in Spain in collaboration with Cardiff University and with Australia thanks to Bruce Mutard and Stuart Medley.

9. Artists’ residencies in Helsinki as part of the Helsinki Comics Festival 2016

TOURING

And a range of smaller projects some with local artists.

We tour some of our exhibitions nationally and internationally. For example our recent Shojo Manga exhibition travelled to The Atkinson in Southport and to The House of Illustration in London. Phono + Graphic has toured to Toronto and Macclesfield and is heading to Carlisle as part of this year’s festival. Black Dog - The Dreams of Paul Nash has been performed in Amiens, France and heads to Tate Britain in November and we have more plans afoot. We welcome interest from venues and organisations.

We seek out and solicit collaborations and projects from creators across the world both established names from a wide range of genres or up-andcoming talent. They tend to be jointly initiated and often with a theme in mind, sometimes fitting with subsequent strands at the festival. We are also interested in new ways to present comic art to the public. We’ll shortly be announcing our commissions for 2017. Meanwhile we welcome ideas for the future - don’t be shy! Email julie@comicartfestival.com.

TWO GREAT AND DEVELOPING INITIATIVES BOTH LAUNCHED ON THE OPENING NIGHT OF THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL:

THE FIRST VISITING PROFESSOR OF GRAPHIC FICTION AND COMIC ART AT LANCASTER UNIVERSITY Benoît Peeters was appointed by Lancaster University to this new post in November 2015 and he starts his three-year tenure in October 2016 with his inaugural public event at the festival Clash of the Toon Titans - TinTin vs Asterix. This appointment is a partnership with LICAF supported by Wallonie Bruxelles International and is part of a developing Memorandum of Understanding with Lancaster University, which has commitment at every level of the University and across a wide range of faculties and departments.

UK COMICS LAUREATE The first Laureate was announced in 2014 at our festival, a fabulous initiative by the Comics Literacy Awareness Trust led by Paul Register. LICAF is honoured to have been asked to ‘adopt’ and take this critical initiative forward. The first Laureate is the incomparable Dave Gibbons (Watchmen, Kingsman and more) who has been energetic in promoting comics and comic art to those in the education sector across the UK. His two-year tenure comes to an end in December 2016 and a new Laureate will take on this mantle. A careful nomination and voting process resulted in a unanimous decision as to who should be the second Laureate, someone who could build on Dave’s achievements to date and continue to spread the word. We will be announcing the new Laureate and their intended schedule at the end of the opening night event at the Brewery Arts Centre Theatre (see page 7) and, subsequently, our website will be the port of call for more information.

Supported by With over seven decades of experience, and a passion for children’s literature, Peters is the UK’s leading specialist children’s book and furniture supplier to nurseries, schools, academies and public libraries. From our team of dedicated children’s librarians and curriculum specialists who read and review every book we take into stock to our unique showroom with over 40,000 titles for you to browse and buy, we’re here for you. Thanks to our knowledge and expertise there’s no limit to the bespoke support we’ll provide. Visit www.peters-books.co.uk to start your story..

In addition we have a growing network of academics from a broad range of disciplines working with the festival. If you’re interested in finding out more please contact Aileen McEvoy at aileen@comicartfestival.com. We’re currently developing a partnership with a new comics network at Oxford University -TORCH - which will be represented at the festival this year at The Shakespeare Centre. See pages 20-21 to find out more. Thank you to all our current (2016) collaborators and, in particular, to:

THE LAKES INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL 2016

BLACK DOG

PART OF 14-18 NOW: WW1 CENTENARY ART COMMISSIONS

THE DREAMS OF PAUL NASH BY DAVE MCKEAN

BOOK LAUNCH: SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER 10:30 AM PAGE 45, THE COMICS CLOCK TOWER

PERFORMANCE: SUNDAY 16 OCTOBER 1.30 - 2.30PM THE THEATRE, BREWERY ARTS CENTRE

Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash is a multimedia performance and new graphic novel by illustrator, comic artist, filmmaker and musician Dave McKean. In Black Dog, McKean explores the work of Paul Nash, one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century, whose First World War experiences inspired him to create paintings of disturbing, lasting power. Paul Nash created powerful paintings which captured the nightmare-like battlefields he witnessed during the First World War. Paul Nash is considered one of the most important British artists of the twentieth century. Dave will perform live alongside collaborators Clare Haythornthwaite and Matthew Sharp. The Black Dog performance combines visual storytelling, a captivating musical score and spoken word performance. It’s a visual journey through the mind and experiences of Paul Nash explored through the exceptional comic artwork of Dave McKean. Black Dog premiered in Kendal in May and has since toured internationally as part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary. We are absolutely delighted that the performance is back for the festival, this really is a comic art experience not to be missed. The festival also marks the launch of the Black Dog graphic novel, published by Dark Horse publishing. There will be an opportunity to buy this stunning graphic novel at the performance and during the festival.

The graphic novel has already received rave reviews ahead of publication: “With sympathetic skill Dave McKean has succeeded not only in communicating to a new audience and a new generation Paul Nash’s vision and visions but, in doing so, furthered Nash’s goal to “bring back words and bitter truths” to remind us of the horrors and insanities of war which show no sign of stopping, and to counter those who would perpetuate them.” Stephen Holland, Page 45 Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash coincides with a major exhibition of Nash’s work at Tate Britain which opens on October 26th. There will be a Black Dog performance at Tate Britain on 13th November. Dave McKean’s work has won numerous awards including the World Fantasy Award, the V&A Museum Illustrated Book Award and the Harvey Award for best Graphic Novel. He has worked alongside writer Neil Gaiman on graphic novels including the critically acclaimed The Sandman series, as well as illustrating the celebrated Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum – one of the biggest selling graphic novels of all time. Black Dog – The Dreams of Paul Nash is co-commissioned by The Lakes International Comic Festival, On a Marche sur la Bulle and 14-18 NOW: WW1 Centenary Art Commissions, supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England, and by the Department for Culture Media and Sport.

“I’d like to explore Paul Nash’s role in the birth of modernism and surrealism, and how those movements were actually witnessed by Nash in the dream-nightmarelike battlefields of the war. He used the landscape that he loved to try to deal with what he’d been through, and to try and find calm and solace beyond.” Dave McKean

THE LAKES INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL 2016

FESTIVAL FOOD AND DRINK As well as satisfying your hunger for comic art we know that a critical part of a good festival is being able to keep your energy levels up by finding the right kind of food in the right kind of places and, wherever possible, avoiding the long queues. We have done our best to recognise this by working in partnership with some of Kendal’s favourite cafes, bars and restaurants. That isn’t to say there isn’t a fine food and drink offering right across town and you’ll find plenty of places to accommodate different tastes and budgets. Highlighted here are those based at our key venues and/or those who have made an extra special effort to celebrate comic art in its various guises or have put their hands in their pockets in some way to actively support us. THE LAKES INTERNATIONAL COMIC ART FESTIVAL 2016

SUPPORT US (PLEASE!) The festival is not-for-profit so we are constantly seeking different ways to help sustain it in the future. If you have enjoyed the festival, we would be grateful if you would consider donating at the festival’s special donation points. We have also produced limited edition festival goodies, the profits from which go back into supporting the festival. This year, for the first time, we are working with a dedicated charity, OCD Action, which will receive 20% of the festival’s profits from sale of merchandise. All the proceeds from our 24-hour comic project will also go to OCD Action. OCD is a clinically-recognised disorder which affects around 1-2% of the population. It is debilitating and paralysing. People with OCD experience intensely negative, repetitive and intrusive thoughts, combined with a chronic feeling of doubt or danger (obsessions). In order to quell the thought or quieten the anxiety, they will often repeat an action, again and again (compulsions).

OCD Action is the largest national charity focusing on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). They provide support and information to anybody affected by OCD, work to raise awareness of the disorder amongst the public and front-line healthcare workers, and strive to secure a better deal for people with OCD. www.ocdaction.org.uk
