THE GOSPEL OF LUKE: For Meditation and Homilies by Geoffrey Robinson
In The Gospel of Luke: For Meditation and Homilies, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson draws on his biblical scholarship and rich pastoral experience to provide a welcome resource for all who wish to explore Lectio Divina applied to the Gospel of Luke. Geoffrey Robinson’s commentary on the Gospel of Luke takes us on a fascinating journey into the mind of the evangelist. Reading and meditating on scriptures with Luke can open us up to new ways of listening to God. He examines the whole of Luke’s Gospel, passage by passage, showing how Luke’s storytelling offers us possibilities of beginning to see and know God more deeply. With Geoffrey Robinson as a guide, discover extraordinary riches: love, encouragement and hope are all to be found in these pages. Ultimately, Robinson tells us, Jesus sang a song to each one of us. Understanding more about Jesus in Luke helps us to sing Jesus’ song ourselves. Bishop Geoffrey Robinson is a Bishop Emeritus and notable scholar with advanced degrees in theology, philosophy and canon law. His previous works on spirituality and the church include the bestselling books, Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church and Love’s Urgent Longings. 9781921946349 RRP $29.95 Web Price $26.95 Sophia $23.96 Sophia Web Price $21.56

New releases THE LANGUAGE OF THE UNHEARD John Falzon
Buy this book and help ‘the
unheard’: 30% of all revenue Written for all who care about justice and who take the side of those for whom from this book will be donated a new society is not a luxury to ponder, but a necessity for which to fight. to St Vincent De Paul Martin Luther King once observed that “a riot is, at bottom, the language of the unheard”. This book explores some of stories that lie at the heart of the current upheavals occurring across the globe, from the perspective of a country that is still yet to resolve its fundamental contradiction of invasion and colonisation, opting instead for a paternalistic and punitive program of control over its First Peoples. Falzon reminds us that change does not come from above. The history of social justice and change has been written by social movements. However, first we must all acknowledge these problems as our problems and not someone else’s. Dr John Falzon is an advocate for a more equitable society. He trained in sociology and poetics. Falzon has worked in academia, research and advocacy in civil society organisations and community development. He has been the Chief Executive of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Australia since 2006. He has been a poet since 1973. 9781921946356 RRP $29.95

DANIEL MANNIX: Beyond the Myths James Griffin

Not the first to delve into this complex life, Jim Griffin’s biography is unique for exposing the Archbishop’s human flaws, previously avoided or brushed over by other biographers. Giving Mannix credit for his many achievements, Griffin analyses controversies where Mannix’s influence is less well known: conscription in the Great War; state aid for Catholic schools; his association with entrepreneur John Wren; and his fateful connection with B.A. Santamaria, who formed an undercover organisation—‘The Movement’—to fight communism in the unions. This produced damaging splits in the Church, the Labor Party and even families. It contributed to seventeen years of government by the Liberal and Country Parties until the resurgence of Labor under Gough Whitlam in 1972. Beautifully written from an acerbic distance, this biography should appeal to those interested in how this nation was shaped and how its values and institutions were influenced by the life of this extraordinary man. 9781921946233 RRP $49.95 Web Price $44.96 Sophia: $39.96 Sophia Web Price $35.96
ASPECTS OF THE HEART: The Many Paths to a Good Life Joan Chittister
“Everything we do in life, the scripture reminds us, goes into the treasury of the heart.” So says Sr Joan in this in-depth and powerful look at what our hearts can attain. She says that the ideas that fill our hearts determine the way we live our lives. Those are the things we draw on in those moments when we need to reach down deep inside ourselves for character, courage, endurance, and hope. In this lovely book, Sr Joan looks at fifty “aspects”, all of which in some way can fill our hearts and our lives. She talks about a prayerful heart, a peaceful heart, a wise heart, a cosmic heart, a compassionate heart. Each brief chapter offers us a rich tapestry for reflection and prayer, and each offers an opportunity to become people who “produce Good from the treasure of the heart.” (Luke 6:45) 9781921946363 RRP $16.95 Web Price $15.25 Sophia $13.56 Sophia Web Price $12.20

NEW RELEASES BEYOND THE STORY: Unraveling the Church’s quandary before the quandary unravels the Church Louis DeThomasis
Beyond the Story looks at how the institutional church can move beyond the story of its current predicament and transform itself. In particular, DeThomasis examines the role that Catholic education and the Catholic school can play in helping the institutional church unravel the issues that plague it in the modern world. He also suggests that the Catholic school must remain vibrant and relevant in today’s world, and to do this, the institutional church must permit the Catholic education system to truly educate and not just catechise. 9781921946394 RRP $19.95 Web Price $17.96 Sophia $15.96 Sophia Web Price $14.36

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Fuller Life in a Fairer World Fr Bruce Duncan CSsR
Social Justice: Fuller Life in a Fairer World offers a succinct overview of how Catholic social thinking developed and why it is so important today. Fr Bruce Duncan shows how strongly the Church insists that concern for social justice is a core element of Christian faith, as is evident in the Scriptures and the life of Jesus. He then traces how the Church promotes social justice in our modern world, confronted as it is by new problems, from climate change to economic crises. He outlines the history and key elements of social justice thinking. Some powerful quotes highlight key moments in the lives of some of the champions of social justice. Social Justice: Fuller Life in a Fairer World concludes with issues of special concern to Australia, the continuing struggle for the rights of our indigenous peoples. Fr Bruce Duncan is a Redemptorist priest who has written widely on issues of social justice. He coordinates the program of social justice studies at Yarra Theological Union in Melbourne and is Director of the Yarra Institute for Religion and Social Policy. 9781921946295 RRP $34.95 Web Price $31.45 Sophia $27.96 Sophia Web Price $25.16

THEOLOGY 50 YEARS OF VATICAN II VATICAN II: Reception and Implementation in the Australian Church
A FRIENDLY GUIDE TO VATICAN II
Edited by Neil Ormerod, Garratt Publishing
Marking the 50th anniversary of the Vatican II council, this book is a fascinating examination of not only how Australian Catholics responded to the changes and challenges of the council upon the way they worshipped, but also how their personal relationship with their God was refashioned; not only for clergy and religious, but also for the laity. The writers provide a review of the experience and the reception of Vatican II, its implications for how Catholics now worship in Australia, and even how young Catholics today, whose experience of church is not coloured by the pre-Vatican II church, see their role in the greater Catholic community of faith.

Max Vodola
An easy-to-read, easy-to-understand summary of this momentous event and, most importantly, what it means to us fifty years on. In A Friendly Guide to Vatican II, Rev Dr Max Vodola summarises some of the history of change that was happening in the church prior to the creation of the Council and introduces us to the Council’s main figures. He uses photos, timelines, graphic lists and summaries to explain the significant reforms and outcomes of the council. Vodola also comments on Australia’s contribution and dedicates a chapter to the issues causing ongoing debate.
As the year 2000 approached, Blessed John Paul II, who had himself participated in the Second Vatican Council, referred to it as ‘this great gift of the Spirit to the Church at the end of the second millennium’. Looking towards the coming millennium, he asked to what extent the fruits of the council could be seen in the Church. This year, 2012, fifty years after the council opened, is a good opportunity to reflect again on that question. Keeping Open the Door of Faith reflects on five themes of the council and their implications for today’s world.

prayer & spirituality JUST CALL ME LOPEZ: Getting to the Heart of Ignatius Loyola
WORDS OF SPIRITUALITY: Exploring the Inner Life
JUST AS YOU ARE: Opening Your Life to the Infinite Love of God
CUP OF OUR LIFE: A Guide to Spiritual Growth Revised Edition
Margaret Silf, Loyola University Press
Enzo Bianchi, SPCK Publishing
Paul Coutinho SJ, Loyola University Press
Joyce Rupp, Ave Maria Press
A sixteenthcentury saint. A twentyfirst-century woman. Two very different paths cross in this delightful book. What could we have in common with a man from the sixteenth century who becomes a saint? St Ignatius of Loyola wasn’t always heroic and holy; he was flawed and fallible, just like us. In Just Call Me Lopez, a twenty-firstcentury woman, Rachel, meets Inigo Lopez, the man we know today as St Ignatius, and both are transformed by their unlikely friendship and series of thought-provoking conversations.
Enzo Bianchi has tried to let himself be guided by the biblical and patristic tradition in Words of Spirituality: his response to the requests of those who ask him for ‘a reason for his hope’. These ‘words’ of Fr Bianchi are arranged to take us on a journey. At the heart of the book is the conviction that our life has meaning: it is not our task to invent or determine that meaning, but simply to discover it— present and active—in and around us. Solid teaching for those seeking spiritual direction.
Just as You Are helps us move forward in the confidence that God’s love is unconditional, and that God simply asks us to embrace that unconditional love and live in it on a daily basis. A native of India, Fr Coutinho combines Eastern sensibilities with Ignatian principles and practices to show us how to stop spinning our spiritual hamster wheel, futilely acting as though we can somehow earn God’s love and favor and instead move forward in the unfathomable love of God already present in our lives.
This new edition continues a fifteenyear tradition of helping individuals and groups. Now with a new preface and fresh design, The Cup of Our Life is available to anyone seeking a more intimate and disciplined life of prayer. With daily devotions for six weeks, this book is ideal for individual and group use in parish settings, religious communities and small Christian communities.

Faith in Adversity SACRED DARKNESS: Encountering Divine Love in Life’s Darkest Places Paul Coutinho SJ, Loyola University Press
STILL POINT: Loss, Longing, and Our Search for God Regis Martin, Ave Maria Press
When we think of God, we often imagine light. Certainly God lives in the warmth of sunlight and within our happiest days, but God also dwells in darkness. In Sacred Darkness, Paul Coutinho, SJ, examines how many Christians are fearful of dark times and struggles, yet it is often darkness that sheds light on our world and helps us live more effectively and more fully in the painful situations of our lives. Coutinho reveals his own experiences of darkness, including a face-to-face experience with God during the black of night when he was feeling most bleak.
Renowned Catholic theologian, Regis Martin narrates the crisis of faith he faced when his mother and brother died which pushed him to revisit all he knew and felt about God. Against this backdrop he explores the questions at the heart of all human longing: What does it mean to really be lost? Drawing on insights from the work of Christian writers, Martin leads readers to that “still point”, a term borrowed from T. S. Eliot, where all polarities converge. Martin eloquently shows that it is at the still point that one encounters the mingling of past and future, grit and grace, man and God.

FACING ADVERSITY WITH GRACE: Lessons from the Saints Woodeene Koenig-Bricker, Word Among Us Press
What can we learn from the saints about adversity? How did they use their adversity as a means of growth rather than just as something to be endured? This book offers an in-depth look at a host of saints and how they dealt with a particular type of suffering in their lives. From each saint we learn valuable lessons about the common trials that come with being human. Each chapter ends with a prayer and a “For Consideration” section that helps readers view their own problems from a fresh perspective. RIDING THE DRAGON : 10 Lessons for Inner Strength in Challenging Times
THE MESSY QUEST FOR MEANING: Five Catholic Practices for Finding Your Vocation
Robert J. Wicks, Ave Maria Press
Stephen Martin, Ave Maria Press
A CLERGY HUSBANDS SURVIVAL GUIDE Matthew Caminer, SPCK Publishing
Noted psychologist and bestselling author Wicks draws upon Eastern and Western traditions to help people deal with difficulties, encouraging people to engage their problems, to ride the “dragons that escaped from the cave” rather than try to slay them or drive them back. The long-lasting results will help all of us enjoy our lives more fully.
Drawing on lessons learned from Catholic monks and saints as well as his own experience, Stephen Martin has crafted five unique practices to help Catholics and other seekers grapple with life’s truly important questions and discover their calling in the world. One of the first books to tap into the wisdom of the Catholic spiritual tradition to help readers discern a vocation.
Women now comprise almost half the priests serving in the Church of England. As a result, there are many male clergy spouses who have had to come to terms with the seismic shift that occurs in family life when a wife embarks on the journey from exploration of vocation—through selection, training, and formation to ordination and a life of ministry.

SPIRITUALITY – with HUMOUR FEARING THE STIGMATA: Humorously Holy Stories of a Young Catholic’s Search for a Culturally Relevant Faith Matt Weber, Loyola Press
In Fearing the Stigmata, twentysomething Matt Weber, a Harvard graduate, television producer and certified rosary-bead carrier, employs his sharp wit, earnest candor and gift for great storytelling to illustrate for young adult Catholics both the real challenges and the immense joys of publicly living out the Catholic faith. Fearing the Stigmata amusingly but honestly explores the tension this layman experiences between wanting to be holy yet “fearing being made holey,” and wanting to be good yet not wanting the cost to be too high. 9780829437362 RRP $18.95 Web Price $17.05 Sophia $15.16 Sophia Web Price $13.64

SPIRITUALITY AND THE BIG SCREEN CHRISTIAN DE CHERGE: A Theology of Hope
I WASN’T DEAD WHEN I WROTE THIS: Advice Given in the Nick of Time Lisa-Marie CalderoneStewart, Loyola Press
A dying youth minister was asked what she wanted young people to know before she passed on. This was her advice. Perhaps the greatest gift we receive when we grow older is the gift of wisdom. This is certainly the case for youth minister Lisa-Marie Calderone-Stewart who summed up her lifetime’s worth of wisdom during her final months before dying of cancer. After 30 years of working with teens, Calderone-Stewart believed that the best practical advice for young people is to be happy and spiritually strong. It is never too late to change your life or to shape someone else’s and CalderoneStewart does just that with this honest, heartfelt perspective on living written a few months before dying. 9780829437669 RRP S16.95 Web Price $15.25 Sophia $13.56 Sophia Web Price $12.20
Read the story behind the award-winning movie Of Gods and Men
Christian Salenson, Cistercian Press
Christian de Cherge, was assassinated with six of his fellow monks in 1996. De Cherge saw his monastic vocation as a call to be a person of prayer among persons who pray; that is, among the Muslim friends and neighbours with whom he and his brothers shared their daily life. Christian Salenson shows us the personal, ecclesial and theological foundation of de Cherge’s vocation and the originality of his life and thought. He shows how the experience of a small monastery lost in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria contributes importantly to today’s theological debates. 9780879072476 RRP $26.95 Web Price $24.26 Sophia $21.56 Sophia Web Price $19.41

ethics WHAT MAKES US MORAL? Craig Hovey, SPCK Publications
What Makes Us Moral exposes the flaws in the idea that science alone answers our moral questions. He confronts such questions as: will there be a time when reason and science alone tell us everything we need to know about human values? Is religion making its last stand in this debate? Hovey draws on Christian morality to give a strikingly different vision of human well-being—one that is more interesting as well as more concrete and beautiful. A compelling account of Christian moral existence that exposes the weaknesses of atheistic ethics and its desolate vision of a world governed by scientific values. 9780281068982 RRP $22.95 Web Price $20.65 Sophia $18.36 Sophia Web Price $16.52

Elegant address book for lovers of celtic art, history and calligraphy
To pre-Christian Celts the cross (crois) symbolised the four seasons or the four elements, the addition of the circle representing the sun, wholeness and completion. To Christians the cross represents Christ’s crucifixion, and in some images the four arms represent the four evangelists. Saint Brigid is the patron saint of cows, and her four-armed straw cross traditionally hangs in the byre for protection. The calf (gamhain), or sometimes a bull, is often used to represent Christ’s sacrifice and as a symbol for the evangelist St Luke.

OTHER BOOKS BY GARRATT PUBLISHING SANTAMARIA’S SALESMAN: Working for the National Catholic Rural Movement (NCRM) 1959-1961 Kevin Peoples
Santamaria’s Salesman is a fascinating, first person account of the true influence of one of Australia’s most powerful non-elected figures. The religious and political influence of Bob Santamaria reached into the depths of the NCRM and the Catholic Church, as well as into the political arena, being the guiding influence behind the Democratic Labor Party after ‘the split’ with the ALP is 1955. His charisma and authoritarian character continuously subverted the NCRM’s aims as an official form of Catholic Action into acting as his anticommunist arm in rural Australia. 9781921946165 RRP $49.95 Web Price $44.95 Sophia $39.95 Sophia Web Price $35.96
THIS TIME OF THE CHURCH
WOMEN IN MINISTRY
Fr Frank O’Loughlin
Dr Phyllis Zagano
Author Frank O’Loughlin argues that the decline in attendance and numbers of those entering religious life in the Western world can be attributed to a shift from Christianity to pluralism which originated in Western Europe. ‘We are dealing with a changing situation which goes beyond the Church while affecting it radically.’ O’Loughlin, a senior priest from Melbourne, argues that the resultant social, cultural and political changes have enormous religious repercussions at a time when people are also troubled by the church’s handling of numerous crises, including the sexual abuse crisis, pastoral inadequacy and even pastoral failure.
This book makes an important contribution to the international conversation on the place of women in ministry. The essays are both readable and infused with research on the restoration of ordained women deacons. In this book Phyllis Zagano examines early ecclesiastical practices, cites current realities within churches in communion with Rome, and articulates implications for participation in Church governance as she carefully and cogently invites readers to consider the ordination of women as deacons—a blessed and sacred form of ministry—within the Roman Catholic Church. ROAD TO ETERNAL LIFE
RADICAL CHRISTIAN LIFE: A Year with Saint Benedict
Michael Casey OCSO
In the prologue of his Rule, St Benedict maps out the road that leads to heaven; he lays the foundation for life in a community that seeks God. The themes that are present throughout the Rule—obedience, humility, prayer, fear of the Lord, eternal life—are grounded in this important prologue. 9781921946158 RRP $29.95 Web Price $26.95 Sophia $23.96 Sophia Web Price $21.56
Very little in this world stays fresh and lifegiving for 1500 years. But when that happens we should ask ourselves why, and what that had to do with us. In this book, Radical Christian Life, Joan Chittister encourages us to look at that question. In an introductory essay she examines how the insights and values of the sixth-century visionary can illuminate today’s search for a meaningful life. 9781921946196 RRP $19.95 Web Price $17.95 Sophia $15.96 Sophia Web Price $14.36

WELCOMING THE OUTSIDER: Reflections for the Year of Luke Year C
In this volume of weekly reflections, Sr Verna Holyhead moves deftly between the Old and New Testament readings, providing a theological context and tying the texts to contemporary concerns. Infused with the Rule of St Benedict, which invites Christians to take the two testaments as ‘the truest guides for human life.’
The evocative title has been used by Geoffrey Plant to sound a note that resonates throughout Luke’s gospel, and which is particularly evident in stories unique to Luke. As Plant notes, the final words that Jesus spoke: “Today you will be with me in paradise”. Jesus died as he had lived, welcoming the outsider.
