01 Preamplifier

Architecture Design in the 4th Year Central Cinema Reconstruction 02.2018----05.2018 Site:Canberra, ACT, Australia Building area: 3174 ㎥ Individual Work

Design Description Preamplifier: a device in the amplifier circuit ( of a radio or phonograph) that increases the strength of a weak signal for detection and further ampifiction ( Dictionary .com) The Cinema Centre, incorporating a Cinema for independent film, a public gallery, shopfronts and professional suites, was conceived by Canberra visionary Darrell Killen in collaboration with Architect Enrico Taglietti in the early 1960s to inject a sense of alternative viewpoint and international perspective for a city forging its contemporary identity. The architectrual form expressed the "daring" of the first underground cinema space in Australia, with free span vierendeel trusses ensuring an open public realm and atrium at street level supporting upper levels of work space and ambulatory gallery. The board cantilevered eaves hovering over the street intentionally created an urban design interface and established a strong distinctive presence in Canberra. With urban development pressure now piqued by the recent scale and forthcoming demolition of the adjacent 1950's Garema Centre to be replaced with high rise scale—— the urgency to respond and preempt the unwitting demise of the Cinema Centre, already impacted by recent internal changes and spatial compromises is imperative. Hence, the " urban imperative "is to reinforce and retune the strength of the architectrual gesture to amplify its value to the urban realm. Under this condition, this project does not aim to encourage the cinema to climb in height in order to display its existence, but find its own position in the urban condition instead. This project is also designed for an example to find the value of low-storey building and a solution to cope with the problems of urban booming height when more and more skyscrapers are built in contemporary city

What I want to Avoid Single Function

Close System Buildings in the past create a closed ,self-contained function system, which more focused on the single purpose. To achieve it, most spaces are seperated individually. However, with the changes of management, we need more open space for discussion, display and cooperation. The boundaries between interior and exterior starts to diminish. All the architects are facing much broader city problems.

Nowadays, a good condition of working is playing a more important role since innovation can bring more profits for companies rather than efficiency. Thus, staffs are required to communicate with each other and socialize together from time to time instead of working individually. In this occasion, the buildings have to have a stronger connection with urban lives and have more social responsibilities. Low storeys could become more open to people and here are some principles.

The central cinema is located in the business district and was regarded as landmark in 1960s. However, the funcion and manager of the building have changed several times, such as exhibition hall or night club. Our site is located on the ROOF of existing building in order to activate and redefine it in the urban condition.

Growing City: The city changed a lot in the fifty years. The cinema was quite outstanding i n 19 6 0 s s i n c e s u r r o u n d i n g h o u s e s are normally low store ys at that time. However the average height of city has risen greatly within the period and the cinema is inconspicuous in the city right now.

1960s

1990s

According to Koolhaas' Delirious New York, It is also an international trend that the urban height increases sharply over the decades and a number of high buildings gathered in the cities while the suburban areas remain low storeys. Because of the great difference of height, the cities are hard to extend with the climb of population.

2000s

Thus, instead of making the cinemal higher in veritical levels, I want to take the advantages of lower houses which can be more friendly for people. The project also can be an example how the city can be developed rather than increase the number of skyscrapers

Canberra Annual Sun Path

Light Environment: The weather in Canberra varies a lot in a year so the light requirements would have great difference between summer and winter. It would be pretty hot in summer as a result that preventing light is the most important thing, however the weather in winter may be freezing and more light is necessary. From the bar chart, we can see that the solar incident angle varied a lot within a year from 75° in summer to 35° in winter. So the "light well" can reflect the light out in summer and induce the light in when it quite horizontal in winter. It can prevent direct sunshine and transfer it into soft light.

Winter Light:

Summer Light:

In winter, top window will open so more light is able to be guided into the interior and light can be reflected in every part of the light well. Solar energy is able to accumulated in the light well and the temperature will increase. All inside windows are closed thereby the heating board are able to emit thermal energy into other space.

In summer, top window will close so light may not be able to be guided into the interior and light will be reflected out by panels. The interior can be bright by diffuse reflection and the soft light won't bring more energe inside. Inside windows will be opened so that the winds can gathered in the well which can help air fluctuate and refresh

Avoid Overwhelming The concept of storeys is dimished and more greenery, events stages and people will be invovled in the architecture. The functions downstairs are more related to public people while those private functions locate upstairs. The greenery connects both public and private areas so the greenery is a place semi-public and semi-private instead of the function of normal corridors.

02 Nearness

Architecture Laboratory in the 4th Year Urban Design 02.2018----05.2018 Site:Canberra, ACT, Australia Research and Design Individual Work

Design Description The geographical environment of the project locates in vancant backlanes in busy business district where high-storey buildings and traditional low-storey shophouses are placed mixed in the city centre. Compared to main streets, few people have ever noticed those backlanes or the dark corners in the cities. "People might understand being near a thing and a thing gained its characteristics from use: what it was like to hold and how it realted humans to world around them and we succeed in reaching the 'thing' by attending to what is near. The 'being' began with the simple nearness." According to Heideggers' theory, with the fast-pace of people's lives, people started to lose the feeling of belongs in the city without experience in the real travelling in the physical world. This project aims to attract more people in Canberra to feel the nearness in their daily lives. The nearness here can refers to the things are happening in the urban life repeatedly which they tended to ignore, such as sky, events, smells, pedestrians, greenery, beautiful scenery. I attemped to present all those daily elements in a drama way so this can attract people's attention and encourage them to slow down their urban lifestye and engaged in backlane experience. A the same time, it is also able to activate those abondoned backlanes, which will make them more attractive for citizens. During the project, I tried to assume myself as a normal citizen who has lived in the city for a long time and record my routine by video camera. Those records were accumulated and reorganised into different short movie scenes in order to reveal the "nearness" I have investigated in the lanes. Finally, the "scenes" of "nearness" will be important base of my project.

How people achieve the self-existence?

Nearness For the most people, they would just passed by those other places while inside the bus or car. All those scenery just passed by in seconds of an eye and hardly been kept inside one’s mind. It makes people are familiar with the suburb they live in but ignore some places in the city even you passed by everyday without notice. Every city, like Canberra, is like a big jigsaw puzzle, consisting of all. Hedegger thinks the preconditions of existence relate to the “things” which are near us. However, the “thing” by discussing changes to perceptions of distance in modern life by faster travel and media. It confused people about the “nearness ” and “remoteness” which prevent people to feel the sense of reality and existence in the city space, especially for the Murulla Ln which almost rejects all “things” out of it. According to my investigation, the tall buildings deprive a lot of “things”, like ”sky”, ”light”, ”activities”, ”smells” and so on. They cut off the relation between people and circumstance of existence.

Heidegger: Distances are Shrinking

How people went to work in the past: People used to rely on feet to go to their office at a slow pace of walking without supports of vehicles, so they can reconganised their surroundings gradually. It's normally hard for them to ignore any space in the city since people spent more time hanging in the streets.

How people go to work right now: With the developments of international travel and mass media, the distance has been shrinking ,which had negative consequences particularly that humans' proximity to their own existence was diminishing.

Movie: A man went to work in the past and right now

Stage 1: Close to events Those public squares, crowded streets and bars are good examples of experience of real lives. People might be able to understand being in the physical world from events since those events normally provide the information or implication of daily life, such as sound of singing, smells of food, voice of talking. Those enforce people to strengthen connection to their surroundings and achieve self-existence.

Stage 2: Step into Backstreets The backstreets are normally ignored by citizens and few people are willing to waste any time in it, as a result that birds and wastes have occupied those places.Sanitation in backstreets are serious problems of city while high criminal rates in the streets would be another issue.

Movie: One day In Canberra A man wakes up in one normal morning in Canberra and spends his whole day in the city centre. He was surprised by the huge difference of backstreets and frontstreets in the same area. The back one is empty and bored with few birds or smoking men but the front one was filled with people laughing and talking. Thus he records the two sides of the city in order to reveal the disposition of Canberra.

Ignore and Existence: Two overwhelming tall buildings just stand aside, which makes it feel so narrowed and depressed when walking in. The concrete walls divide the exterior and interior clearly. It can protect the privacy of users to a certain extent, however, less things remained outside except the indifferent concrete walls. Finally, few people have ever used it or even noticed that there is a lane way called Murulla.

Murulla Ln: a Newer Building to Newer Building Several types of backlanes exist in Canberra. One is the backlane between two new buildings, which tends to be much taller than the traditional buildings and may not follow the design and character of the historic architectural type. It is accessible for both pedastrain and cars, while sometimes is heavily utilized for delivery trucks for the supermarkets. These backlanes are generally open for public but often fail to attract citizens because of narrowness and uncomfortable scale of buildings.

Bible Ln: Traditional House to Newer Building Another is the a existing house to a newer building backlane, where existing ones are on one side of the backlane and a more recent development is on the other side which is much taller than the traditional ones. It is only accessible for pedastrain and literaly the backlane is generally semi-private, semi-public but often fails to attract a public crowd due to the uncomfortable conditions. To protect the traditional houses, the newer buildings have to keep a distance and ,because of this, this backlane is wider than Murulla Ln. Thus, Bible Ln has sufficient sunlight, but it's liklely to be overheated in summer.

Murulla Ln: Newer Building to Newer Building The Murulla Lane is so narrowed that it's hard to add any new architecture into the lanes for events without disturbing previous functions. In order to make the lane more visual attractive, I put various mirror panles and guide people to investigate their surroundings nd let people who pass by become an event could be appreciated by themselves.

Stage 1: Walk into the Lane

Bored and Cold

Stage 2: Lane of "Sky"

Beautiful and Colorful

Stage 3: Lane of "Ground"

Patterns of Streets

Movie: Walking into the lane I tried to walk into the lane for three times in differetn ways in order to find how the lane would be in different sights. First, when I walked into the lane in the normal way, I could only saw the concrete walls, which makes me feel bored and cold. Then I looked upon and saw beautiful colors of sky, reflected on the elegant newer building forms. Finally, I looked down at the ground and various patterns attracted my attention which implied the history of the lane. The asphalt road was crunched by trucks and the yesterday rain wetted soil and filled the holes

Mirror Panel: Those panels are made from polished steel and are able to draw different scenery into the backlane. It can guide people to appreciate the lane from abnormal visual angles.

Frame: All panels are supported by frames which consists of 1.2*1.2m squares.

Roof of lanes: The roof can be recognised as an element of views and induce people to find the beauty of lanes in the cities.

The Roof of Eyesight I choose the polished steel as my material. The steel frames form a roof of the lane way to control the proportion in height and width. Some polished steel boards (like mirrors) are placed randomly in it with different degrees. Some reflect the people and events in the crowded street nearby while some shows its own beauty, like sky, buildings, earth. Those things remain conjoined in “mirrorplay an inevitable reflection of one another that was the primary precondition of existence.

Mirror-play: themselves

People who pass by including themselves are also important events happening all the time.

Mirror-Play: Nearness

Events happening on the mainstreets can be "borrowed " by backlanes.

Bible Ln: Traditional House to Newer Building Unlike Murulla Lane, bible ln has more space for people to do some activities outside, such as cafe, marketing ,coummunication. It's important to create a good outside condition to cope with fluctuation of crowds and various demands of citizens.

Garden Pot

Unit Cube Various kinds of pots are provided. In winter, it could plant some evergeen grass or shrub. In spring, more flowers could be planted. To prevent sunlight in hot weathers, plants with more leaves like ivy can create more shade for people. After sunset, the end lane may become a stage for singers or speechers. At these occasions, different light elements will be provided.

All greenery pots are removable and managers can adjust them according to their needs. For example, there can be more roof greenery pots to provide shade for people in summer and less in winter. Besides, some special designed unit cube can be used as light in the night for pedestrians or for night clubs sometimes.

Flexible Roof Bible lane is more open to public which provides more opportunities for peoples' participarion but also more various problems, such as weather, population and so on. To adapt ever--changing surroundings, the roof should be a flexible system.

But after 10 am,the morning shop will close and take them back shophouse. Pedestrians just pass by instead of staying . At weekend, the lane may be a place for marketing and at night it also can be used as night club for disco dancing.

Design Description The studio, entiled Collected: ness[vessel] seeks an urban intervention that responds to the cultural value of the Drill Hall Gallery precinct as a socio-cultural asset of collective significance- both in the value of the collections it holds and exhibits and in its role as an urban artefact within the collective memory of the city (Reference Aldo Rossi's notion of The Collective Memory within The Architecture of the City). The project intent is to retain the existing Drill Hall Gallery first built in the 1930's as a Regiment Drill Hall within a fledgling capital city layout of paddocks and tracks yet to be built in to. It was later repurposed into the the Kingsley Street Hall as a Campus facility for the newly founded ANU, where Australia's first student broad based community Radio service 2XX was established and broadcast. The building was later annexed to the National Gallery of Australia and transformed in to a high quality gallery space for NGA(National Gallery of Australia) contemporary exhibitions. In a return arrangement with the ANU it today functions as the ANU Drill Hall Gallery with a programme of high quality exhibitions of Australia and International Art, drawing on the University's extensive collections and Artist Fellows created work.

WHAT IS ART What is the art for?For most people , nowadays, they may be burried in all kinds of conmmunications, such as facebook, message or twitter, which display themselves all the time when the real existence may go far away from our lives in some way. In contrast, art works always intend to display the truth in the world. For example, some painting works focus on the true beauty of nature while some photographs can tell people real events happening in the world. Those most famous masterpieces even can induce visitors' emotion and help them recognize themselves. As a result, I decide to set up a series of "vessls" to peel off all the disturbing element in our lives and help people to admire different beauty in our lives. The extension gallery intend to create a space to stay alone where they can face to their soul honestly.

LIGHT VESSELS The studio, entiled Collected: ness[vessel] here refers to publicness, timeness ,whiteness, spaceness and valueness which are presented by "Light" in this project, since the "light" helps to shape the charateristics of space and achieve specific fuctions for different people. Besides, light changes a lot both in orientation and brightness within a day while it also can imply the changes of seasons due to the colours of light. Thus, in this project, architecture can be seen as a vessels of light .

04 Regeneration

Architecture Studio in the 3rd Year Skoda-auto Musum 02.2017----05.2017 Site: Mlada Boleslav, Czech Building Area: 7260 ㎡ Individual Work

Design Description Mlada Boleslav is a small town in Czech and achieved great commercial success in automaking and founded its own brand: Skoda. The manufacture reached the peak after being acquired by Auto company. The Skoda factory right now have occupied quarter area of the town and more than half residents are workers in Skoda. In another words, the Skoda company supports the developments of the town. However, Mlada Boleslav has its own urban problems. To build more factories, hills and valley nearby are destroyed by human-beings and transformed into plain, used for car production. With the development of Skoda, more residences have been built in the recent decades. There is an obvious difference between old and new-developed town. The traditional town are low density and beautiful with various colours while the new part are rather bored filled with concrete buildings. It's quite a common long-lasting trend happening throught the world. In the pasr the land was covered by greenery and plants which later were ruined by humen with tar or bricks after industrial revolution. During the hundred of years, the revolution were a process of making “ Plain” and hills as well as vally were transfered to "flat ground" in order to meet the needs of factory works. However, this "flat trend" has brought about a number of problems. For example, urban waterlogging becomes frequent when no obvious height fluctuation in city and hard materials like bricks prevent rainwater infiltration. Citizens are bothered by bad air conditions, which are bad for citizens' physical and emotinal health because of lacking greenery. Thus, to reverse the "flat trend", the project aims to reverse the generation of land against industrial development and make the ground more fluctuated which can benefit citizens who work and live in Mlada Boleslav.

MLADA BOLESLAV Malada Boleslav is a small town in Czech and achieved great commercial success in automaking. The manufacture reached the peak after being acquired by Auto. However, like Detroit in the USA, it declined with the fall of car selling and majority parts of the town are occupied by factories which makes a negative influence on domestic lives.

During the hundred of years, the revelution were a process of making “ Plain and hills as well as vally were transfered to "flat ground" in order to meet the needs of factory works. However, this "flat trend" has brought about a number of problems, such as urban waterlogging, air pollution and so on.Thus, to reverse the "flat trend", the project aims to reverse the generation of land against industrial development and make the ground more fluctuated like natural landform.

Colours: Unlike factory occupied by grey or cold colour, the old town area has various warm colours, such as red roofs, yellow paintings, blue windows and so on. However, the beautiful sceneries hardly can been seen in the new residence which follow the architectural stlyes of factories. In this condition, those missing colours are necessary to re-appear in the monumental museum in order to strengthen the connection between traditional town and recent developed industrial areass. The project will also become an important part in monumental grids with the extension of Mlada Bloeslav.

Solar Energy The colorful glass panels are photovoltaic on the building, which are able to connect the solar energe and transfer it into electrisity consumed by museum so the museum can save some energe for the factories. There are also plenty of photovoltaic landscapes on the ground which also can provide some electrisity for museum. So it can generate a rather self-contained energetic recycle system.

Rain Collection It is a common phenomenon that water gathered on the ground in many cities, which floods many low-storey houses since the water can not be drained away with concrete ground surface. To avoid this condition, grass and soil can be infiltrated by water easily

Water Recycle Water recycle facilities are undergound which can clean polluted industrial water. They can be used as daily water by citizens
