There is a form of art that affects our lives more than any other. Almost all of our lives are spent interacting in one way or another with architecture. We eat inside of architecture. We sleep inside of architecture. We work and go to school inside of architecture. Sunday, September 9, 12

Architecture, like any other art, can consciously or sub-consciously, contribute to our emotions. Beautiful buildings that are well planned and functional make us feel comfortable, secure and energetic.

Photography, like architecture, was born out of science. For this assignment I would like you to use the art of photography to capture the art of architecture in a creative and interesting way. Please avoid simple representational shots. (A straight on shot of the outside of your house, for example, would be boring.) Sunday, September 9, 12

Make your photographs dynamic. Challenge yourself to shoot from an interesting angle, or take a close up of an interesting detail. Perhaps you can look for an ironic juxtaposition of two different architectural styles, or find an ironic situation. This assignment is intended to help you focus your attention on the 7 Elements of Art. Sunday, September 9, 12

Elements of Art

Every work of art ever created has been made up of some combination of the 7 elements of art. To make art you must understand art, and to understand art you must understand the 7 elements of art.

Texture Texture describes how the surface of something feels or looks. Despite the smooth glossy surface of our photo paper, B&W photography is very good at capturing the illusion of texture. That’s why we started with it. Sunday, September 9, 12

Line Writers use lines to create words. Painters apply paint with brush strokes. Photographers use lines found mostly in nature to express themselves. There are straight lines, curved lines, sharp angles, organic and geometric lines that each effect our emotions differently. Sunday, September 9, 12

Value Value refers to the areas of light and dark in any artwork. Ansel Adams used a full range of values to capture a rich, deep emotion. Edward Weston used more dramatic areas of light and dark to create lots of impact. The range of values is called CONTRAST. Sunday, September 9, 12

Color Color is one of the most exciting and powerful elements of art. No other element can influence our emotions more directly than color. However, in Photo 1, color is not an available element so you must concentrate on the other 6 elements even more. Sunday, September 9, 12

Space Space may be a difficult element to identify or understand. It actually only exists in 3-dimensions so most artist only work with the illusion of space. DEPTH OF FIELD is the photographer’s main tools for creating the illusion of space. The space around and between the shapes is called “Negative Space.”

Form Form describes objects that are threedimensional, so once again photographers only speak of the illusion of Form. Perhaps it is easiest to think of form as being Shapes that are 3-D...but since our photos are flat, the ILLUSION of “3-D Shapes”. Like Shapes, Forms can be GEOMETRIC or NATURAL. We use all of the other elements in various degrees to capture FORM. Sunday, September 9, 12

Architecture For this 100 point assignment take at least 24 exposures that use the elements of art to artistically represent "Architecture". Make a contact sheet to turn into me along with your enlargement. Your print must be a full size 5" x 7" or a full 8" x 10" and dry mounted on the appropriate sized matt board. A black boarder around your print may help create interesting shapes with your negative space. You must shoot outside with the sun as your light source. This assignment is less about “buildings” and more about how you use the elements so think carefully about Line, Value, Shape, Space and don’t forget about Texture!
