Welcome to EABCT 2013 Welcome to the 43rd Annual Congress of the European Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies and to the wonderful city of Marrakech. At the time of going to print we estimate that there will be over 1250 delegates attending this years congress and they will be coming from nearly 60 different countries from across Europe, Africa and the rest of the world. This will make EABCT 2013 the most diverse congress we have ever held and will help us to realise a major theme of the congress; namely to better develop our understanding and knowledge of “CBT and Culture”. This congress is the result of many years of planning since the proposal to take the EABCT congress to Morocco was enthusiastically supported by the EABCT member associations nearly 4 years ago. It has provided EABCT with the opportunity to work closely with our new affiliate organisation, the Moroccan Association for CBT, and use this opportunity to forge links with new colleagues and developing CBT associations in Africa and the Middle East. The historical link between the Moroccan association and the EABCT French speaking associations of AFTCC and AFFORTEC has also enabled us to involve two of our established associations in working alongside the Moroccan association to develop the French language programme. This will make the latest developments in CBT accessible to more people than our traditional English language programme alone is able to do. We have also been able to involve another new affiliate association, the Canadian CBT Association, who joined EABCT last year and as a bi-lingual association they will be able to contribute to both the English language and the French language programmes. The congress organizers would like to thank the EABCT scientific committee under the leadership of Philip Tata, and Jamal Chiboub and Nadia Kadri, from the Moroccan Association, who have worked to make the congress an undoubted success. Thanks also to all the EABCT Member associations for their support of the congress and, of course, to the delegates who have made the trip to Marrakech. You will not be disappointed in the programme or the experience that you will have in Morocco On behalf of the Congress Organising Committee
The scientific programme of the congress has fulfilled all the expectations that we set out to achieve. The hard work by all the members of the English and French language scientific committees and the response that we have had from the European and wider CBT community across the world has enabled us to bring you a scientific programme that is exceptional in terms of its quality, breath and size. There is something for everyone no matter what your interests, experience and culture are. When you combine symposia, roundtables, discussion groups, SIG’s, keynotes, In-congress workshops there are almost 200 events taking place over the 3 days of the congress. When you look at the number and areas of interest of the poster sessions alone you will see the exciting work that is currently taking place in developing the science and practice of CBT across Europe and the rest of the world. It is a tribute to the ever growing status and recognition of EABCT congresses that assembling such programme has been possible. A special thanks to all the delegates who are presenting their work. We hope you find it as rewarding to do as we appreciate your contribution. To all delegates, we say: enjoy the congress, in all its aspects, and take home new knowledge and new friendships from friendly and beautiful Marrakech. Philip Tata, Chair, EABCT Scientific Committee
The Moroccan Association of CBT, the University of Casablanca and the City of Marrakech will welcome the 43rd EABCT Congress to the beautiful city of Marrakech. We will ensure that the congress is not only a great scientific success but also an experience you will remember all of your life. Over the past few years we have formed close friendships with many EABCT associations and CBT therapists from across the world who have contributed to our CBT training programme. The congress will be the largest gathering of CBT on the African Continent and a stimulus for the continuing growth and development of CBT in Africa into future years. We will have a warm welcome for you and give you the opportunity to discover new ideas and make new friends in a new culture.
