3D Premium letters 1

3D PREMIUM LETTERS

We call our letters and logos PREMIUM when they’re made using premium materials combined with perfect finish, coming from years of accumulated craftsmanship.
Available materials are stainless steel (304 and 316) Brass, copper and titanium coated sheets. All these materials come either with a satin or mirror polished finish. By choosing for a premium sign, you are making an investment in showing everybody who and what you are for many years to come. Naturally we warrant our premium letters for a lifetime.

The life of Premium With the exception of copper the face of each PREMIUM gets laser cut. This allows the face to get shaped without causing stress of the material. As a result the cut out face stays as true as at the time it was still integrated in it’s raw material sheet of 4 x 8 feet. Depending on the size and the channel width of the letter; we choose the face material thickness sufficiently, causing every sign to come out true and straight. After laser cutting, the returns of letter are fabricated accordingly and put together by soldering, all of which is pure handicraft. After that the letters are ready to be edge finished by filing and polishing. It takes years of experience for our technicians to become a fully skilled craftsman. In this we take great pride and it assures premium quality.

3D Premium letters

High quality letters finished to perfection

Prismatic letters and 3-dimensional logos are drawn in Solid-Works and converted into flat pattern parts that are then sent the laser cut. After fabricating the parts fits seamless and prismatic letters look as perfect as if they were machined out of solid material. Minimum size of premium fabricated letters is 2 inch and we can make them as big as 4 x 8 feet (or 120x240cm) wide/tall and depending on the type material.

“Special Premium”

Two materials, one face. It is possible to combine two or more materials in one face.
Our CNC laser cut machine is capable to cut various pieces of material which combined fit like a seamless puzzle.
The various cut-outs are assembled by bonding or soldering on a plate underneath the face. This type of face can be combined with any of the Back Options mentioned on the previous page.

The old school look
Vintage letters can be a hot issue. We combine LED technology with Old Look and the result is a light bulb-look letter which is maintenance free for 50,000 hours.
We can make them in Copper or Aged Brass.

SOLID LETTER

Mirror (back view)

Shaped faces The face of the letter does not need to be flat. We can make beveled edges with or without returns. We can also give the face a prismatic or curved shape, again with or without return. Below sketches show the various options.

The combination of Face Option F1 with Back Option B6 creates what we call a solid letter.
The solid letter is mostly mounted on its bottom or top. Most important to know is that a solid letter always needs two weep holes to rinse the inside of the letter after fabrication.
These two holes need to be ¼ inch or 6 mm and can be placed anywhere you deem fit.

3D ACRYLIC LETTERS

3D Acrylic Letters

Acrylic Letters and Logo’s Acrylic letters and logos can be used in and outdoors. They offer great exposure because the build-in LEDs lit up all sides of the signage and the acrylic is available in a number of exiting colors. Acrylic Letters and logos are cut from colored acrylic sheets. The face material is cut by laser machine. The return is thermo formed and bonded underneath the face sheet. There are restrictions regarding size and shape. Ideally the font of the acrylic letter has a consistent channel width of minimal 2 or 50 mm. This prevents hotspots occurring in the returns of the letter. The return height must be 60 mm or higher for similar reason. Acrylic letters are typical size between 12 to 30 (inch) or 300 to 750 (mm) and their fonts have to be relatively simple and straightforward, as there are limitations to what is technically possible to build.

“Shaped Acrylic”

A more colorful, 3D look This photo demonstrates that when edges are bonded around the face of a color acrylic sign there is a visible different in projected brightness when the LED lights are on or when the lights are off.

3D BUDGET LETTERS BUDGET LETTER

Budget Letters and Logos

“Affordable quality”

Budget Letters and Logos are less expensive than similarly sized 3D letters, as they are typically crafted of aluminum. Aluminum Budget Letters and Logos can be spray-painted in any preferred color finish and are available in direct and or indirect lighting. Aluminum materials are inherently less rigid than stainless steel letters, requiring Budget Letters and Logos to be only wall mounted. Profile 1 The reversed channel Budget Letter can be used with or without LEDs and with or without a back insert. Wall mounting can be secured by holes or rivnuts in the back insert. When back inserts are not required, the only available wall mounting option is to bond a mounting device against the back of the face, which can be an acrylic bar/donut or clicker. This profile’s minimum letter height is 4 inch or 100 mm and must have an Arial or other simple font. Serif font letters require a minimum letter height of 10 inch or 250 mm. Its maximum letter height should not exceed 24 [inch] or 600 [mm]. The channel letter version of the Budget letters consists of an aluminum can with acrylic faceplate. This face plate is secured by an around plastic trim. This trim is available in the same colors as our acrylic sheets. Small color variations may occur between trim and acrylic. The aluminum can is spray-painted in any required color. Wall mounting can secured through holes in the back plate with or without a preference for rivnut installations. Profile 3 Similar in most aspects of Profile 2, but the exception that the plastic trim is replaced with aluminum trim. Aluminum trim is recommended for Budget Letters and Logos in excess of 35 inch (900 mm) in height, particularly when Budget Letters and Logos are subject to strong winds. Budget Letters and Logos should not exceed 47 x 94 inch (1200×2390 mm). Budget Letters and Logos trims are typically painted to match returns colors.

MODULE

STRIP

We can fit LED lights in almost every letter. In general we carry two types:

L.E.D Lighting

L.E.D LIGHTING OR

• LED modules: for all face and back lit letters with a channel width of 15 mm up. Ideally for outdoor usage as all of them are IP67. • LED strip: For faces with a channel width of 6 mm and more. The LED strips are less suitable for outdoor usage. In some cases we can pour in resin with which they become waterproof. The modules are much brighter than the LED strips. For example one module LED bulb produces 20 Lumen and one LED bulb on a strip less under 10 Lumen.
The standard available colors are Warm White, Power White, Yellow, Green, Blue and Red.

FACE LIT

EDGE/BACK LIT

BACK LIT

To prevent “hot spots” in the face or against the background wall it is important to choose the right LED in combination with letter dimensions. To determine which LED is most suitable for a specific job, it is necessary to know the minimum and maximum channel with of the letter font as well as the return height of the letter, along with the environmental circumstances of the letter (ie. Indoor or outdoor in sun, rain and/or snow). One row of LED modules can cover a channel width of about 80 [mm] (3 [in]), depending on the return height. Should the channel width get bigger a second and or third row might be necessary to have the face of the letter be lit up without hot spots and with enough illumination. Outdoor use needs a drain hole per letter. Warrantee • LED modules have a 5 year replacement warrantee • The LED strips have a 2 year replacement warrantee

Brass and Copper are metals that gradually develop a corroded patina when exposed to the elements. The application of layers of transparent lacquer can significantly retard corrosion. Milt steel and brass surfaces can be specially treated to offer a more seasoned characteristic.

LETTER ASSEMBLY

This page addresses the assembly mountings. Wall mounting, ie. the installation of the letter to the wall is addressed in the next chapter.

Front inserts can be bonded (T) or held in place using clips that are soldered to the inside of the returns that than are bend around the front insert (Z). Sealant may be used to stiffen up the connection. Front inserts can be secured using contour screws, in a similar manner as the back inserts. To avoid the possibility of the contour screws causing any form of shadow in the letter face, the contour screws are placed at precisely the correct depth from the face surface. The use of transparent acrylic blocks (Y) also assure the avoidance of any form of shadowing.

THE SIGNAGE FACTORY has global experience in any possible ways of assembling letters. A client’s familiarity and comfort with self-designed letters, to best serve customary regional expressions, are treated with a deserved sensitivity, respect and fulfillment. Also welcome is THE SIGNAGE FACTORY’s ready, willing and expert ability to assist a client with recommendations to designs applications.

Bonded

Assembly options A through D all apply to the use of contour screws. Contour screws allows for the installation of back inserts against the wall prior to installing the letters onto the back insert. Similarly, options E (with side mounting screws), G and I apply contour screws. Options F and H require full assembly while securely affixing to the background wall.

WALL MOUNTING OPTIONS The size of all letter installation mountings are more of less linear to the size of the letters, keeping in mind possible stress imposed upon the letters by the elements.

D

E

Below gives a full overview of all types of all available mounting techniques. They are grouped in three different circumstance of mounting. One is in case the letters have not back inserts. The second is for letters with a back insert and the last one is for letters being mounted by their top of bottom whether they have a back insert or not.

B

Mounting options for letters with back insert A. Holes in the back plate
Normally holes of 6 mm or 1/4 inch diameter. The back is mounted to the wall with a screw in rawl plug. The letter is mounted on the back plate afterwards.

I

B. Rivnuts in the back plate
Threaded studs are screwed into the rivnuts. The drilled holes in the wall are filled with a contact cement and the studs are pushed in these holes. Mounting options for letters without back insert C. Flushed straps
Normally the surface of flushed straps is somewhat enlarged so the double sided tape has more area to hold on to. Double sided tape is used against smooth back ground walls like glass or marble.

Wall Mounting

D. Flushed straps w. rivnuts
Threaded studs are screwed into the rivnuts. The drilled holes in the wall are filled with a contact cement and the studs are pushed in these holes. E.

Straps recessed w. rivnuts
Used for reversed channel letters without back inserts. Recessed straps will cause less shadow against the background wall. The mounting methode is the same is A and D. Mostly spacer tubes are used to cause a constant gap between the letters and the wall.

F.

SUS Tubes round 5 [mm]
Soldered in three of four corners per letter, sticking out as much as the required gab between the letter and back ground wall. Studs are drilled in the wall, sticking out over which the tube slide. The friction of the studs going into the tubes will hold the letters to the wall. For safety contact cement is applied in the holes with the studs.

G. Acrylic threaded rod
Bonded to the inside of the face these rods offer similar mounting to a strap with rivnut. However these mountings do not cause any shadow in case LEDs are applied. H. Nut on plate bonded
This give a similar result as G. We TIG weld the nut on a plate and bond te plate against the inside of the face. This will prevent warpage or heat damage to the outside of the face. Depending on the size of the letters and whether the letters are closed in the back or not, reinforcement is necessary inside the letters to make them strong enough to hold their own weight and possible dynamic loads imposed by the elements. Regarding the kind of mounting technique it does not really matter whether the letter hangs on a ceiling or stands on top of something.
The size of the letters ultimately determine how much reinforcement is necessary.
We separate them in three categories: I.

Small letters under 250 mm/10 inch in height I: Plate reinforcement with TIG welded nuts in the top or bottom of the letter.

J.

Middle large letters, 250/10 inch and 600 mm/24 inch in height
J: Bracket reinforcement inside the letter by an extra strap and or SUS bracket

K. Large letters with a height of 600 mm/24 inch or higher
K: Reinforcement by an SUS or galvanized milt steel frame inside.

GENERAL INFORMATION Capital

Lowercase

Letter dimensions For quotation purpose the letter height and width are important things to know. When you specify the letter height and width please use the definition shown right on this page. As you can see we do not consider the overall length of lower case letters like d, p, t etc. All lower case letters are measured at the height of the smaller lower case letters. Should the letter height be viable we should consider an average letter size.

General Info

Marine Environment Planning to expose your signage to an environment close to the ocean (within 20 km/12 miles)? We would like to advise applying Stainless steel 316 grade instead of Stainless 304.
Stainless steel isn’t completely rust proof, it comes in grades of better resistance.
Stainless 316 is also known as Marine grade stainless and just needs less cleaning attention throughout the years then 304 grade.

Edge filing All Premium and Flat-cut Signage will be edge filed. This finish will give your sign an even more beautiful look.
When Titanium black coated material is used, this finish will leave a stainless colored line across the edge. When this is not allowed we can use a special fabrication technic to avoid this.

Use the visibility chart to get an indication about the size of your signage. Please keep in mind that these values are an estimation.
Values are based on signage lit during day time. Factors as weather, sunlight, color, font and your own eyes can effect the visibility.

Choosing the return hight Taking a return thicker than necessary adds costs to the letter rapidly as returns are bend by hand and gets progressively more difficult to fabricate and thus add more labor. But maybe even more significant are the extra cost for air freight. On the other hand, taking returns too small will cause the letters to be flimsy and therefore difficult to handle by the installation crew as they are too weak. The returns of a letter are typically chosen at 10 percent of the average letter height. Of course this is just a guide line.

General Info

Viewing Distance [feet]

Viewing Angle When ordering letters it is important to realize at what altitude the letters will be Installed. Letters that are installed under the eye of the viewers need to have their return bud-ups be located precisely on the opposite side from letters which are Installed above eye height.
With most letters the point where the returns come together can be hidden by having that at a corner of the letter, but for instance with the letter O this is impossible as well with letters which have a curvy shape, ie. letters without sharp corners.

PLUG & PLAY

WHAT ABOUT P&P Mounting individual letters on a bar on top of an assembly table is a lot easier then when standing on a ladder of scaffold. Especially when it’s important to have them lined up true and straight. A lot of time and money is saved as well, especially when LEDs are involved as we pre-wire the whole system here in our factory. The Plug & Play systems can be painted in any pantone or RAL color. They’re mounted straight to a wall or the bar/frame with letters can be mounted either hanging on a ceiling or standing on a roof. The letters are always mounted on a flat surface of a square or rectangular profile or raceway. The hanging system is typically made of round tube. The round tube can be slide into each other. There are various ceiling brackets available, but visible and hidden on top of a ceiling panel. The bar/frames come in various tube sizes in Stainless steel or aluminum. With letters over 16 inch or 400 mm in height we recommend to use a double horizontal bar. The size of the tube should be 10% of the letter height rounded to the next larger available tube. Bars are available in the sizes: • Aluminum: • Stainless:

Square 3/4 x 3/4 inch (19x19 mm), 3/4 x 11/2 inch (19x38 mm), 2 x 2 inch (50x50 mm) Square 3/4 x 3/4 inch (19x19 mm), 1 x 1 inch (25x25 mm), 11/4 x 11/4 inch(32x32 mm), 11/2 x 11/2 inch (38x38 mm), 2 x 2 inch (50x50 mm)

For vertical parts, tubes are available in diameters: Rod 5/8inch (16 mm), 3/4 inch (19 mm), 1 inch (25 mm), 11/4 inch (32 mm) Sheet metal raceways are available in stainless steel and aluminum. When letters are supposed to be mounted to them, we recommend to use stainless steel only as aluminum is soft and might bend under the load of letters. Head section can be closed both welded or with end cap. End caps are available in plastic and in the metal of the tube itself.
Plug & Play systems can also be custom made to your individual needs. In that case a drawing has to be provided but we can also provide a drawing to be approved by you.

SHIPPING

Shipping

All signage we make under a weight of 70 kgs or 150 LB is picked up daily with one of the worldwide express couriers. Heavier packages or packages of which the size exceeds what these express couriers accept goes through an airline carrier through one of our shipping agents. They have their own alliances with shipping agents on your end and delivery the package at your doorstep.
When the signage gets too big for an airliner to transport we have the option to ship by sea container. While this is much slower than flying it is especially with large packages very inexpensive.
