A series of academic talks by pupils
Thursday 20th January & Monday 7th March – 4.05-5.00pm – BCH
At each Academic Society event, four John Lyon pupils will be presenting 5 10 minutes academic talks on a topic of their choice.This is an opportunity for pupils to develop their presentation skills, and to learn from their peers about a variety of topics.

SECTION II: COMPETITIONS MUSIC COMPETITION | Y7-U6
Composition Competition
Deadline for submissions Friday 11th March
Challenge: The John Lyon School invites pupils from across the school to create a composition that could be performed in the future concert. The composition should be on a theme of celebration connected with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration.
Submission format:
• You can submit this as a score using staff notation, though it is not necessarily expected that this composition be written down. Indeed, an audio recording would be suitable as a submission.
• It should be accompanied by a brief document outlining the background of the composition.
• If any parts are missing from the submission they should be referenced here to be added later.
Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded on how well the composition matches the brief, the creativity of the work and how well motifs and musical phrases are developed.
Winners: One prize of £25 in Amazon vouchers will be awarded. If practical, the composition will be performed and recorded.

English Creative Writing Competition
Deadline for submissions – Friday 11th February
Flash Fiction submissions should be no longer than 200 words. Pupils should write a short story based on the photographs shown to pupils during the Masterclass sessions.
Masterclass on writing Flash Fiction led by Mrs Trafford will take place on Thursday 13th, Thursday 20th and Thursday 27th January 1.15-1.45pm in M5

POLITICS COMPETITION | ALL YEARS Policy Competition
If I were Mayor of London I would…
Deadline for submissions Friday 18th March
Challenge: Write a policy document outlining a range of different policies and ideas that you would like to see take place, if you were Mayor of London. Ideas need to be realistic and based upon current issues. There is no limit to the number of policies, but they must all be explained. Discuss how you plan on achieving them, what funding you would need and where this will come from.
Submission format:
Typed onto one or two sides of A4 with a maximum font size of 12. Each policy you write about needs to have a separate underlined heading on
• What is the Policy
• Background to the policy
• Solutions and Funding
Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded for originality, research and presentation.
Winners: One prize for each of the following categories: Years 7 10 and 11 Sixth Form

SCIENCE COMPETITION | Y7-Y9
Design a Poster
Deadline for submissions Friday 18th March
Challenge: The theme for British Science Week 2022 poster competition is ‘Growth’ . Perhaps a poster could explore a tadpole’s journey into a fully grown adult frog or look at the ways population growth is affecting the planet.
Judging criteria:
• Creativity in approach Innovative angle on the content or creative interpretation of the theme
• Content Clear, accurate and informative about a STEM topic
• Effective communication presented and communicated in an engaging way
Winning entry 2021
• Members of the British Science Association will shortlist entries, and a panel of judges will select a winner.

Winners: The top 2 entries will get a £10 Amazon Voucher. The top 5 entries will be submitted for the national competition
THE BIG BANG COMPETITION| Y7-U6
Deadline for submissions – Friday 11th March
Challenge: Develop an idea that will transform people’s lives and present it to the UK’s top annual science and engineering competition. Submission format: Written entry and short video, complying with the competition rules that can be found here: rules and eligibility
Competitors can enter either on their own or as part of a team.
