JOHN LYON ACADEMIC SOCIETY | Y7-U6 A series of academic talks by pupils Monday 16th May & Monday 20th June – 4.05-5.00pm – NMDH At each Academic Society event, four John Lyon pupils will be presenting 5-10 minutes academic talks on a topic of their choice. This is an opportunity for pupils to develop their presentation skills, and to learn from their peers about a variety of topics. If you wish to give a talk please email Excellence@johnlyon.org expressing your interest and the title of the talk you would like to give.
SECTION II: COMPETITIONS SUSTAINABILITY COMPETITION | Y7-U6 CREATE A BEHAVIOUR CHANGING ADVERT Deadline for submissions – Tuesday 17th May Bin It! Create an advert that changes Young adults’ behaviour, and attitudes towards littering Challenge: Create an advert that will inspire teens to change their attitudes and behaviour towards littering. Submissions: Working as a team, or as an individual, you will need to submit the advert, tell us where the advert would be seen and why you think it works. It can be a printed advert for a newspaper or bus stop, a TV advert, a social media advert or even a TikTok. You will have to choose one of the following forms of litter that you think is most important for this age group to create an advert about: Confectionery wrappers, Face masks and Chewing gum Guidance: Get creating! Create your advert in all its glory. Think about the message of the advert. What are you trying to say to your audience? How can you say it in a way that will engage them? Start by thinking about where you see adverts the most and the ones that capture your attention. If you decide to do a video-based entry or an animation and cannot create the film you can submit a storyboard instead. Email your entries to AMG@johnlyon.org or hand in to AMG. Prizes: All entries will be entered in the National Competition. In the National Competition, the winning team or student will receive a £500 Amazon voucher for the school and a £500 voucher for themselves. The two runners-up will receive a £250 Amazon voucher for the school and the same for themselves.
RSP COMPETITION | Y7-U6 Stories from Scripture – Study and Understanding Deadline for submissions – Thursday 26th May Challenge: Choose one of the following incidents in the life of Jesus and write an account as if you had actually been present. • Christ teaches his disciples the Lord's prayer (Luke 11:1-4) • Christ heals the centurion's servant (Luke 7:1-10) • Christ calms the storm at sea (Mark 4:35-41) • The Resurrection (Mark 16:2-18). Guidance: Your eyewitness account should show empathy and reflect a sense of the time in which you are writing. Entries: Maximum 4 sides of A4 which can be hand-written or digital. Submissions: To be handed to any member of the RSP team or to RSP office. Please ensure that you have clearly stated your name and form.
ROBO-DOCTOR DESIGN CHALLENGE | Y7-10 Design the Ultimate Robo-Doctor Deadline for submissions – Monday 6th June
This year‘s STEAM Summer challenge is for you to design the Ultimate Robo-Doctor Entries: You will need to: - Draw an image (manually or digitally) of the Ultimate Robo-Doctor - Annotate the various features of this Robo-Doctor - Create an accompanying document to your submission describing why your ultimate doctor is better than present doctors Submissions: Entries to be emailed to Dr Weinberg by Monday 6th June Judging criteria: We are looking for creative but realistic ideas Winner: The Gold, Silver and Bronze John Lyon Summer 2022 STEAM prizes will be awarded at the End of Term assembly For further information, please contact Dr Weinberg at FRW@johnlyon.org
GEOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR | All Years Where, How and Why Deadline for submissions – Friday 17th June Throughout the pandemic, our ability to travel near or afar has been severely limited. This year, to encourage young people to widen their geographical horizons, whether locally or much further afield, the Royal Geographical Society is asking pupils ‘Where, How and Why?’. Challenge: • Where might you want to travel to? • How would you get there? • Why? What makes this place geographically interesting, important or meaningful to you? Entries: KS3 and KS4 students will produce an A3 size entry. This can be handmade (then sent in electronically via a scanned copy or photograph) or using PowerPoint, Word, Publisher or PDF, etc. KS5 students will produce an Esri StoryMap containing no more than 1,500 words. All entries should address this year’s theme and must meet the criteria listed here: https://www.rgs.org/schools/competitions/young-geographer-of-the-year/2022-competition/ Judging criteria: We are looking for eye-catching, innovative, informative and accurate submissions which show off the geography around where you would like to go, how you'd go there and why this particular place. Winners: The best entry for each category will be named ‘John Lyon Geographer of the Year’ and will be awarded an Amazon voucher. SECTION III: EVENING EVENT INAUGURAL PATANI SCIENCE LECTURE Open to Pupils and their families Thursday 12th May 7pm - BCH We are delighted to be hosting Professor Hugh Montgomery OBE to speak about the topic of Climate Change Messaging Hugh is a consultant Intensivist; UCL Professor of Intensive Care Medicine. He directs the Centre for Human Health and Performance, has published over 550 scientific articles and has won more than eight national and international awards. Hugh co-chaired two Lancet Commissions on Human Health and Climate Change, and now co-chairs the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change. He has written and lectured extensively; briefed policymakers, advises corporates, co-leads the UCL MSc module; was appointed ‘London Leader’ by Greater London Authority’s Sustainable Development Commission, attended international ‘COP’ negotiations; led the children’s climate education ‘Project Genie’; and co-led the 2020 ITV documentary ‘Floods and Climate Change’ (2020). Hugh was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to intensive care medicine and climate change.
The Patani Lecture Series is being enabled as part of a very generous donation from the Patani family, in loving memory of former pharmacist Dinesh Patani, and is designed to enthuse and stretch aspiring John Lyon scientists. As part of the donation, the school has also received state-of-the-art science equipment, which is being used and will be used for many years to come.
