THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 102 – 5th November 2021

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE Dear Parents, Saal Mubarak! I hope that all those families who are celebrating Diwali had an enjoyable day on Thursday and Friday. I wish you all a Happy New Year. We were spoilt on Thursday morning when, as part of our Diwali celebrations, the Bollywood clubs danced for the school. It was most moving and reminded me of all that is good about the School that has been missing over these Covid years. It has been decided that the Parents of those children in the dance groups will be invited into school to watch the performance live. Our Chamber Choir had the honour of being invited to John Lyon on Thursday to attend a concert and choral masterclass and then to perform themselves in the Boyd Campbell Hall in front of an audience including members of the Royal College of Music. I must thank Mr H Jones, Director of Music, for firstly running the choir and secondly giving the children the chance to perform and benefit musically from such a fantastic event. Our competitive sport has kicked off again following the half term break. We had great success against St Christopher’s winning all our matches. The new netball court on the Astro is almost ready and I look forward to watching the girls play on this wonderful new surface. On Tuesday our Year 6 went on a History trip to Reveley Lodge. A hugely rewarding and educational time was had by all. I am sure they learnt a lot about the Victorians and how education has changed over the years! Thank you to Mme Mitchell for organising and running the trip.

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE CONTINUED As the term unfolds I hope to be able to invite parents in for more events. We are heading for a very busy time of year so make sure you read the Herald and have your face masks at the ready! I would like to request that parents do not drop off or park on Hindes road between the school entrance and Headstone Road in the morning. It is very close to the junction and could cause difficulty for other road users. Please do use the single yellow lines in front of Trinity Church. I would like to finish by wishing you all an enjoyable and safe weekend.

MATHS DEPARTMENT

Year 5 worked in pairs identifying the names of a shape, diagram of a 3D shape and the net of the shape. This matching exercise helped pupils with visualisation and their overall knowledge of 3D shapes.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Year 3 pupils identified and described the functions of the various parts of a flowering plant. They explored the female and male parts, which play a vital role in the life cycle of flowering plants, including germination, fertilization and pollination.

Page 4

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CONTINUED Year 6 pupils focused on learning the value of a balanced, healthy diet - foods which are good sources of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The pupils learnt about the role of each food group, how it impacts the body and the children were encouraged to design their own eat well plate. They also looked at the number of calories, fat and sugar in the most popular foods such as a Subway tuna sandwich, a Big Mac, a cinnamon roll, pizza and cupcakes.

NURSERY In Nursery, the children were excited and mesmerised by our brightly coloured Diwali display. We talked about how we celebrate Diwali by cleaning and decorating our homes with brightly coloured decorations such as Rangoli patterns and beautiful diya lamps, to welcome the Goddess Laxmi. We also learnt that part of the tradition is to visit a local temple, and enjoy delicious sweet and savoury snacks with family and friends, not to mention the amazing fireworks. The children enjoyed playing with the bangles on the Diwali Display. They then made their own diya lamps and designed Rangoli patterns.

YEAR 2 Year 2 Delightful Displays The children in Year 2 have been incredibly busy! Over the half term holiday, 3D models of habitats were produced taking us to the arctic, under the sea, out into the forest and even to the desert. The models are on display in the main entrance hall to our school for everyone in the community to walk past and enjoy! We also completed some fantastic artwork all about our Hopes & Dreams which is displayed in the main corridor through the centre of school. To mark our Diwali celebrations, we have also decorated the window of the Pre-Prep building with our colourful and stunning rangoli patterns and divas. We hope all enjoy looking at our work as much as we have enjoyed creating it for you!

HISTORY TRIP On Tuesday morning, Year six took a trip back in time when they travelled to Reveley Lodge in Bushey and were Victorian children for the morning. The pupils played at being housemaids; using a Victorian washing-dolly, laundry tongs and a mangle to wash a heavy Victorian petticoat. They saw inside a real Victorian middle-class villa, hearing the servants' bells and seeing the various rooms exactly as they would have been. The kitchen was interesting, with a toasting fork and a heavy iron. The dining room and the drawing room were beautiful. The bedrooms with the Victorian hot water bottle and the commode were also fascinating! The children then went into a Victorian village schoolroom, where they experienced life as real Victorian schoolchildren, with slates to write on and strict teachers who were keen to use the cane! Before we came back, we were treated to an upmarket Victorian tea with bread and butter and Victoria sponge cake. All in all, it was a very successful trip and we are keen to go back next year!

CHAMBER CHOIR The Quainton Hall Chamber Choir visited John Lyon on Thursday for a superb concert and masterclass run by The Royal Academy of Music. At 1.15pm, baritone Michael Temporal Darell and pianist Jack Redman performed a spectacular lunchtime recital, streamed live on YouTube, which was followed by a one-hour masterclass where they gave detailed feedback to ensembles from both schools as well as a diploma soloist, Sammy Smith, from John Lyon. The Quainton Hall Chamber Choir started the masterclass with two of their songs, Somewhere along the road and On the sunny side of the street, the former with a beautiful solo verse from Amelia Thomson (Year 6). The ensemble received positive and valuable feedback from the RAM visiting musicians and a warm reception from the masterclass audience. To hear these songs and more, do attend the Music shows on 16th or 17th November at Quainton!

HARVEST

Over the Half term holiday, we were able to deliver over 200 kg of donations to the Harrow Foodbank, as a result of our Harvest collection. We have received a letter of thanks from the Foodbank, who were stunned to see a car arrive filled to the brim with donations. Thank you so much for your generosity.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Next week sees Remembrance Day (Thursday 11th November) and we will, as usual, be marking this important national event on the day at 11:00am. Alongside this, we will of course be selling poppies and related merchandise to the children during the early part of the week. As usual there is a range of items on sale in the School Office and the office staff will be pleased to sell these to the children in Years 3 to 6. The younger children will have the opportunity to buy these various items from their teachers from Monday to Wednesday. Some rather exclusive items cost up to £2.00, but there are simpler items: rulers, stickers, wristbands etc. which start at 50p. We recommend a minimum donation of 50p for a standard poppy, but this figure is clearly up to you… We usually raise at least £200 at Quainton Hall for this important charity, I hope that we can do as well, this year! Thank you.

MATHS COMPETITION

GAME ON! England Rocks is a free, online competition, exclusive to schools in England using TT Rock Stars. Your mission, should you wish to accept, is to correctly answer the most times tables questions over the four days of competition! Every correct answer that a pupil gives, in any game type, will contribute to their class' total but, in order to make it as fair as possible for large and small classes alike, it's the class' average that will be used to choose the winners. The winning school will also be based on the average number of correct answers per participating pupil. When is the competition? England Rocks 2021 will start on Monday 8th November 2021 and ends on Thursday 11th November 2021. To support player wellbeing and help limit screen time, there is also a daily time limit of 60 minutes per player. In other words, each player can earn competition points for up to 60 minutes between 7.30 am and 7.30 pm. Once the player goes beyond 60 minutes of play on a given day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition. Passwords and login letters will be sent home via your child.
