THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 106– 3rd December 2021

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE Dear Parents, I start by commenting on the new variant of Covid. With heightened concern due to Omicron, I have reviewed the end of term events. The school will run all events at school and at Trinity Church as normal and there will be no cancellation of the various concerts unless explicitly directed to do so by the DfE. Parents attending events will be asked to take a Lateral Flow Test before arriving at school. Masks will be compulsory and seating will be set up to allow for social distancing. PLEASE DO NOT COME TO SCHOOL IF YOU HAVE ANY COVID SYMPTOMS. For families who have a positive case within the household, we ask that children remain at home until a negative PCR result is confirmed. Mrs Shaw will be advising all parents, so do please contact her if you have any concerns or questions. There are numerous events next week that include the EYFS, Pre-prep and Prep School children, so please make sure you are aware of all events within the School Calendar. The Drama Club treated us to a superb performance from the production, ‘High School Musical’ on Wednesday and Thursday morning. The performance was quite simply outstanding, made even more incredible by the fact that the children have had only eight rehearsals since the beginning of term. Well done and thank you to all those children involved, as well as to Miss Shah who runs the Drama Club and Mrs Ford who supported with the rehearsals. Our U9 and U11 teams have had a number of netball and football fixtures verses Aldenham this week. I am so pleased that interschool competition continues at this time, as there is nothing better than seeing the children return from these matches so full of enthusiasm.

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE CONTINUED We ended the week with a wonderful assembly on the Jewish festival of Hannukah. My thanks to Miss Parker and Miss Sherr for presenting such an engaging and informative assembly on this important celebration within the Jewish calendar. Staff News: Miss Bull will be leaving Quainton Hall at the end of this term having been awarded a ‘Social Work Scholarship’. Miss Bull will be taking up a place at Hertfordshire University to carry out her studies, with the aim of completing her degree and masters before working with young offenders and vulnerable teenagers. We wish her all the best for the future.

MATHS DEPARTMENT

Year 3JC have had fun practising grid multiplication in their pairs using the dice to make two- and three-digit numbers!

Page 9

MATHS DEPARTMENT CONTINUED The Year 4s have enjoyed collecting data in pairs and small groups through a fun and engaging Maths Dance activity incorporating movement into their learning. They then worked independently to calculate the mean, mode, range and median of the collected group of data.

Page 10

MATHS DEPARTMENT CONTINUED Y4 created different shapes to demonstrate the concept of symmetry. They practised identifying the line of symmetry on the shapes they constructed using skittles. This activity was designed to help the pupils visualise horizontal and/or vertical lines of symmetry through the centre of a shape.

Page 11

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Y3 have learnt the importance of the human skeletal system, how it protects some of the vital organs of the body and how it supports and helps the body to move. The pupils expanded their learning in a practical way by counting the bones in a skeleton's hands and wrists and, trying to straighten and bend its fingers.

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT CONTINUED This activity links well to the theme of healthy eating. Y6 pupils looked at six different kinds of soft drinks to find out how many grams of sugar each has, per 100ml. Pupils investigated their chosen fizzy drink labels on the internet to collect the data they needed in order to complete this activity and then present the data on a graph.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT We are very much looking forward to seeing you all at our Advent Concert on Friday 10th December at Trinity Church, Trinity Church, Hindes Road, Harrow. The performance will begin at 7pm and will last around 1 hour. There is no special theme to this year’s concert, but the staff and children have put together a varied programme of words, drama and music to celebrate our pupils learning at this special time of year. There are traditional and contemporary songs, carols and poems and drama included in the performance. We look forward to seeing you there. We would also like to wish our Chamber Choir good luck as they join John Lyon’s Christmas Show performance which will be held on Monday 6th December 6.00-7.00pm. The choir will be performing as part of John Lyon’s main Christmas Concert, which takes place at St. George’s Church, Headstone, on Pinner View.

NURSERY AND RECEPTION Nursery and Reception have been enjoying a shoe shop role play in our outdoor area as part of Reception's topic of 'People Who Help Us'. To consolidate the children's learning, a shoe designer came to visit the Nursery and Reception. Together, we listened to the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker, as this was the very book that inspired the shoe designer to design shoes. The children enjoyed colouring shoes and some children had a go at designing their own shoes. The children watched as she drew some of her designs onto paper and in our sand 'mark making' tray.

Page 21

YEAR 2 Year 2 Shopping Fun! The children in Year 2 have been to the shops - Mrs Sweeney's Super Shop and Mrs Murphy's Marvellous Market to practise their mathematical skills when working with money. To continue the fun and embed their learning, they created their own shops at home! Buying and selling items from around the house with their families, giving different items price tags to then count the correct coins for, adding items to create totals and even spending larger amounts of money to buy things and then calculate the change. So many opportunities to develop their mathematical skills and have some fun along the way! Well done everyone!

FRIENDS OF QHS – SECRET GIFT ROOM Planning continues apace for running the Secret Gift Room again this year, on Monday 13th December. As mentioned a couple of weeks ago in the Herald, this great fund-raising activity gives all children from Reception to Year 6 get the chance to ‘go shopping’ in school for gifts for members of their family, WITHOUT needing their parents to be with them. Our band of volunteers wrap the presents before the children even leave the room, so the gifts they have bought truly are a ‘Secret’ when they come home. A good number of our loyal parent helpers have already signed up, but stock needs to bought, the event needs to be set up (on the afternoon and evening before – Sunday 12th December), and the shop needs to be staffed on the day. Anyone else who can volunteer for any or all of these activities is asked to email qhs.friends@gmail.com , and a planning Zoom meeting is planned for Wednesday 8th December at 8:00pm. If you have made contact already, you will be included in the Zoom meeting invitation! As before, if you have any questions, please get in touch, either using the email address above or contact Fr. Mike, mike.still@quaintonhall.org.uk

QUIZ - WHO AM I? This week's Quiz Huge congratulations to all the pupils who successfully guessed Boris Becker as the answer to last week’s quiz. Special congratulations to Zynah (5JS) who was the first to email me with the correct answer and a certificate will be awarded to her.

One of his famous quotes is “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time”.

He was born in Milan, Ohio, United States.

He was a businessman and inventor in the USA.

He did not learn to talk until he was almost four years old.

He built his first lab at the age of 10.

Please send your answer by Monday via email to Mrs Alwaheidi at arwa.alwaheidi@edu.quaintonhall.org.uk
