THE QUAINTON HERALD Issue 109 – 21st January 2022

HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE Dear Parents, We continue to monitor the cases of Covid within the School and take advice from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Year 5 has had a minor outbreak and we have taken precautions to limit the spread. I request that any child showing symptoms does not come into school prior to taking a PCR test with a negative result. The advice from UKHSA is to continue to offer face-to-face education unless the child is required to isolate. Schoolwork will be provided to those children isolating due to Covid, but completion of the work will not be compulsory if the child is feeling unwell. Please accept that the work may take the staff a short time to collate due to their daily teaching commitments. Sport continues and we have had mixed fortune this week with the girls’ football. Radlett proved too strong for us last Friday, but we fared better against St Christopher’s with two out of the three teams winning. I look forward to the Swimming Gala and other events taking place next week. Miss Theodore-Elliott (Evie) will be leaving the Nursery at the end of the month as she starts her new career as an English teacher in South Korea. This is an exciting move for Evie and we wish her all the best for the future. Evie’s infectious smile and bubbly personality will be missed; all the best.

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT News from the English Department: This week we are delighted to share the work some of the Year 5 children have completed as part of their Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ studies. As well as using rhyming couplets, as part of a storyboard, detailing the main events in The Bard’s life, the children have been examining Shakespearean sonnets. Working in small groups, they have written their own modern day sonnets using the same fourteen line and iambic pentameter form used by the playwright. Iambic pentameter is a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (stressed syllable) eg ‘Two households, both alike in dignity’. (Romeo and Juliet)

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT In Year 6, we learnt about the Human Life-Cycle. The lesson covered stages of development in the foetus, fertilisation and the effects of drugs and alcohol on the foetus. Pupils learnt key words, understood timelines for foetal development and watched an engaging video clip on the stages of pregnancy. We finished our lesson with an educational board game where pupils reinforced their learning of embryo development, pregnancy and birth in an engaging way.

Aida’s calming landscape shaded with a graphite pencil. Beautiful work Aida.

Can you guess who this is? Siddharth’s creative Harry Potter with his superfast broomstick. He used an old rubber to carve and draw.

REASONING It can often prove very challenging as pupils often require 3D spatial imagination to tackle NonVerbal questions, which some may find conceptually difficult. Using The Magnetic Cube Net allows pupils, when answering questions, to appreciate how the net folds and makes it easier to visualise the various adjacent patterns.

RECEPTION This week in Reception, we have been learning about plastic pollution in our seas and oceans. We have been exploring what happens to sea creatures if there is plastic in the water and learning about what we can do to help. We decided to reuse plastic and made different models of sea creatures and submarines. Layla made a jellyfish and said, "I used plastic so it doesn’t go in the sea so the sea creatures don’t get sick because they’re eating it." We also made sea creatures out of playdough. Serenity created a picture of a turtle and explained, "The turtle got stuck in a net and I saved it. There was a naughty boy and he threw a net inside the water and I cut it off the turtle or it would die."

Page 15

RECEPTION CONTINUED In our Literacy books, we wrote speech bubbles pretending we were sea creatures. Here are some examples. Reception have decided that it is really important that we cut down on our plastic use and always try to reuse or recycle any plastic so that it doesn't end up in our seas and oceans. We are also going to work hard to make sure that any plastic we see goes into the dustbin so it can be thrown away properly.
