ADMISSIONS
For Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep
Choosing the right nursery and first school for your child can be a daunting prospect, so we are here to guide you every step of the way. Quainton Hall offers a broad education to children, from age 3 to 11, with a focus on instilling an excitement for learning, high levels of achievement, and the fostering of creative and inquisitive minds in children who are confident in all they do. Children typically join Quainton Hall in either Nursery or Reception years and continue to the end of Year 6, aged 11. However, some children do join us at other stages and we are always pleased to welcome them. OUR CATCHMENT Quainton Hall is proud to serve the families of Harrow and surrounding areas. Our families typically come to us from a North West London catchment area including the Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing and Hillingdon, as well as parts of Middlesex, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. ENTRY ASSESSMENTS Requirements for entry at each stage of Quainton Hall are very different and entirely relevant to each age group. Our assessments are held in an age-appropriate and stimulating environment. Activities are designed to enable your child to relax and be
themselves. At this age, we are looking for potential, rather than what has already been learnt. NURSERY Aged 3 to 4
We have a well-resourced and welcoming setting, which was renovated in the summer of 2018 to create an open-plan environment for our children. We maintain excellent staffing ratios and have additional volunteers and support staff throughout the School. This enables our children to enjoy a rich curriculum and make accelerated progress. There is no assessment for entry to the Nursery. Parents should complete an application form, found on the School website. The application will ask which sessions are desired: mornings, afternoons, or full days. PRE-PREP Reception, Year 1, Year 2
There are four classes in the Pre-Prep department. Our emphasis is on making our pupils feel excited about their learning and showing the children how they can develop to their best ability in a caring environment. We focus on building
firm foundations in Literacy and Mathematics and ensuring the children are learning through cross-curricular themes and topics. The small classes have one class teacher and one teaching assistant, which means that each individual child is able to receive attention and support. Children joining Quainton Hall at Reception will take part in a fun group activity as part of the admissions process. This would typically be a 45-minute session with five or so other children. This assessment will look at each child’s interaction with the other children, how they respond to questions, and their communication and language displayed through reading, writing and talking. At the end of each of the Pre-Prep years, children will sit short assessments in English and Mathematics. PREP Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6
From the age of 7, pupils in Year 3 begin to attend lessons with subject specialists in English and Mathematics, as well as in other subjects including Science, Computing, Art and French, together with a full Games programme. Each child’s effort and attainment is regularly assessed and homework becomes a feature of school life.
Children moving into Prep from Pre-Prep, or joining the School, will be assessed in English and Mathematics as well as taking an online Cognitive Abilities Test, which looks into areas such as reasoning, perception, memory, verbal and mathematical ability, and problem solving. The results of these assessments enable us to provide a more rounded education for each child. MOVING TO SENIOR SCHOOL With Quainton Hall and John Lyon coming together to create an all-through school from 3 to 18, there is a clear route for Quainton Hall pupils to move up to secondary education. All Quainton Hall pupils are given an unconditional offer to study at John Lyon, not dependent on the result of an entrance examination. All children will be asked to sit an assessment, the results of which will be used to help John Lyon teachers know more about each child. Quainton Hall maintains excellent relationships with other local senior schools in both independent and maintained sectors, and each child will receive the full support of the School as they leave us aged 11, wherever they choose to begin the next stage of their education.
